The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: 1C4PJMBS5FW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The Power Transfer Unit has been diagnosed by dealer as, "Internal failure within PTU obstructing shift". This unit automatically transfers power to a rear wheel or wheels whenever the front wheel or wheels loses traction/slips due to wet, slick surfaces. This action enables vehicle to regain traction and stabilize control of vehicle. Without it loss of traction cannot be corrected putting the vehicle at risk of a catastrophic accident. The dealer has not repaired this and it has been over two months that I continue to drive this vehicle. The reason dealer has not repaired as told to me is that the part is unavailable due to high demand indicating that this is not an isolated incident.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: 1C4PJMAB0FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I’m not sure what component failed as it is linked to many. My 4 wheel drive is out. The differential pump needs to be replaced. It is available for inspection. My safety was put at risk by my car slipping and I drove into a curb thankfully no one was hurt! I took it into my repair shop and it was confirmed the differential pump needs to be replaced. None of the federal employees had to investigate the car as it wasn’t in an accident. There is a 4 month wait time to get my part so this must be an issue with lots of jeep owners! My service 4 wheel drive light would go on and off when hitting bumps a week before this happened. It still goes on and off as I can’t get it replaced because I cannot obtain the part because it’s on back order for four months! Please help us keep owners get this problem resolved!

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1C4PJMDS3FW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: About six weeks ago the "check 4WD" light started coming on intermittently and would then go off. I had the car checked before a road trip (that we didn't take for safety reasons) and my shop found a 2020 recall (W48/NHTSA 20E-037) for "all Chrysler models." I brought the car to Jeep of Chicago on [XXX] and the diagnostic found metal particles in the PTU fluid. I then opened a case ([XXX]) with Chrysler, which I was told on [XXX] they cancelled without contacting me or Jeep of Chicago because my VIN wasn't associated with any recalls. I found that Chrysler recalled 2016/2017 Jeep Cherokees for this issue and I was told by service people at Jeep of Chicago and Fields Jeep they have had a number of Jeeps come in for this issue. I was quoted $2818.55 to fix this and want Chrysler to pay for this. I am hoping NHTSA can help with this as it is a known safety issue. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-17
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS1FW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: We bought the car brand new at Lithia Motors in Roseburg Oregon. After just a few months of driving, there was a noticeable clunk in the transmission at approximately 30-40 mph that occurred at random and included a shudder. The problem seemed to occur about every 3 or 4 days. We took the car to Lithia and they could not replicate the problem. Lithia did do some software updates. We were advised of a class action suit regarding the transmission. We made a claim and we were denied because they said we did not report the issues enough to Lithia. We appealed that because we told Lithia about the problem every time we took the car to their facility for oil changes. In December of 23 we had an issue with the car missing and took it to Lithia. The replaced injector one and advised there was minimal seepage from the oil filter. It was not explained that it was a transmission oil cooler. In [XXX] there was a code to service transmission. Minutes later the car was losing power and barely made it up the hill to our house. A return trip to Lithia and they said replacing the transmission cooler might resolve the problem but maybe not. A second opinion AAMCO said the same thing. The AAMCO mechanic showed me the transmission cooler and a puddle of oil that had settled below the leak in between the manifold. I told him I though that was the motor oil filter. On the way back home, the car again failed going up hill to our residence. The car is not safe to drive. There is potential for engine fire. I think a transmission oil cooler in the center of the engine near the manifold does not make a lot of sense. This car has 104,000 miles. I think there should be a safety recall on these cars to include full repair of the drive train. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2023-05-11
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING: REAR COMPARTMENT/TRUNK
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.
  • Consequence: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.
2020-06-11
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
  • Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
  • Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.
2018-05-17
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. Negative 2015 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Kurt Altenwerth 2025-10-08

I drove a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited for almost a decade and was extremely pleased with it, except for the gas mileage. My granddaughter still drives it today! That's why I decided to purchase a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and I absolutely love it. The vehicle looks great, handles well, and is comfortable to drive. It also has great gas mileage, which is a plus. However, I have experienced some issues with the 9-speed electronic transmission after driving about 3000 miles. When I slow down to a near stop and then accelerate, the transmission hesitates before engaging into the proper gear, which almost caused me to have two accidents. Additionally, when I release the accelerator pedal after giving the vehicle maximum acceleration, there is a substantial delay before the vehicle stops accelerating. I have also tried to use the manual shift feature to downshift when driving down steep hills, but there is a significant delay before the transmission actually responds. The manual change feature on the Jeep is absolutely useless for my needs. I have checked the transmission gear readout numerous times by moving the shift lever left, but I have never seen the transmission indicate that it was in 9th gear. In fact, it will only shift to 8th gear when I am going downhill.Hello, I have been experiencing some issues with my Jeep Cherokee's transmission. Occasionally, after coming to a stop and then starting up, the transmission locks up in 1st gear and I have to accelerate up to about 25 miles per hour before it shifts and then it shifts quickly through several gears. I have already explained and demonstrated all of this to the service manager at the dealership where I bought the vehicle and they have been very accommodating in trying to alleviate the problems I have had with the transmission. Despite their efforts, the problem still persists. I have subsequently contacted Chrysler Customer Care and they opened a case number in my name (refer to above case number) wherein I was instructed to take the vehicle back to the dealership again. Upon taking the vehicle back, I was told once more that the transmission is performing within design operating parameters and their diagnostic test do not indicate any problems. I am very uncomfortable with driving my jeep even though circumstances force me to do so. I believe that there are other Cherokee owners that are having the same issues with their vehicle and I would be very surprised if there weren't some related accidents. Thank you for your attention to this matter.Hi Bill, I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you've traded in your old Grand Cherokee for a new one with 8-speed. That's great news! Best regards, Georgetown, TX.

Firstly, I have the V6 model Trailhawk. It was a great car for the first 11000 miles. However, one day I received an RO1 recall notice for a software reprogramming. I would advise against getting it done. This reprogramming disables second gear because they know there is a serious design flaw with the transmission. The recall reprogramming limits the down shifting of the transmission, so you end up with a car that is always in the wrong gear and a herky-jerky pig to drive. I once rated this car with 5 stars, but I feel compelled to warn the public now. So far, Chrysler appears to be unwilling and very uncaring to restore this vehicle to what I paid for. Update: This Cherokee was long ago dumped, traded for a 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6r. The Jeep was a ridiculous Lemon, an absolute swindle and worst purchase of my 64 years. The 4WD would always disable, and FCA disabled 2nd gear, making it a pig to drive. So far, my current Outback is a far superior vehicle and much better off-road and on. I already have 23,000 on it.

As someone who works for a national car rental fleet, I have extensive knowledge on the issues that new cars face. In fact, major auto manufacturers rely on us to identify recalls. I would like to advise you to consider other options and avoid the new Chrysler/Fiat models, especially the Cherokee. You may have already read reviews about the transmission problems and the difficulties in dealing with the dealership and service people. Unfortunately, this vehicle has proven to be a complete disaster. We encounter daily issues ranging from transmission to electrical problems. One of the most recent issues is the thermostat failing around 30K. The problem is so severe that we have had to mothball our 2015 models because the replacement thermostat unit, which is a non-removable thermostat housed in a multi-port junction, is unavailable for MONTHS due to a nationwide shortage. These issues are becoming more and more common. If your thermostat fails after the warranty period, be prepared to pay at least 2 hours of labor (which is difficult to access) and $200 for the part. As someone who has worked on hundreds of vehicles, I can confidently say that this is the worst vehicle I have ever dealt with. Therefore, I strongly advise you to consider other options.

The 2015 Jeep V6 Cherokee Limited has returned for transmission work. The vehicle is producing a helicopter-like noise when accelerating and decelerating. It is clear that the 9-speed transmission is not suitable for this vehicle. In contrast, my other car with a 6-speed transmission has had no issues. Despite being only 15 months old, this Jeep has been more problematic than my previous two Jeeps. It is disappointing to have experienced these issues, and I hope that Jeep can address them effectively in the future.

In May of this year, we purchased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L V6 with the 9sp transmission. Unfortunately, at 10,700 miles, it started exhibiting transmission issues. The Check Engine light and the Service Stop/Start System Telltale light came on, and the vehicle went into 'limp mode', only allowing us to drive at 35 miles per hour. It was a scary experience as we were on a major highway, but we managed to pull off the road and get it home. We contacted the dealership, which was 46 miles away, but they suggested we drive the vehicle to them. We were skeptical and decided to use our own AAA service to get it towed to them. Although they did provide us with a rental, it took them 2 1/2 days to perform a software update that was needed per a service notice. We were skeptical, but we drove it for 83 miles, and unfortunately, both lights came back on. We were disappointed as we purchased this vehicle to replace our unreliable Town and Country Mini Van. We will keep you updated on our journey.**** update **** This Jeep went into the shop again. This time we were told it had a defective transmission, and they were going to replace it under warranty. After two weeks, we had to call for an update, and it seems they installed a new transmission (#2) from FCA, but it was the same series of transmission, and they were about to call us, but were alerted to the issue. Another transmission (#3) was sent, and it was installed. Unfortunately, in approximately 110 miles, the same issue happened. They towed it back, and we got the same rental (under the warranty, we HAD to drive a Jeep product while ours was in for work). In less than 16 weeks, they installed transmissions #4 & #5. Unfortunately, the jeep was in the shop for over 40 days for the transmission. We initiated 'lemon law' proceedings and FCA was required to buy the jeep back from us (minus a mileage usage allowance). While we consider ourselves lucky in that respect, we have decided that we can no longer afford to buy Chrysler. The quality we had come to expect over the years (three generations) is just not there anymore. Even if the transmission had been a good component, the jeep was far less than one would expect from this legendary brand. We have no plans on buying another Chrysler product. Since this 'review', we have purchased a Nissan truck to replace the Cherokee. So far, there have been zero issues. We did, however, get a pretty good deal on a new mid-package Ford Explorer ($27,000 out the door!). We have had ZERO issues in any way with this vehicle. Now, this is a car I will recommend. I did see that FCA had to recall a few hundred thousand vehicles, again. So, you buy them at your own peril.

Positive 2015 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Broderick Oberbrunner 2025-10-06

I recently purchased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 3.2-liter V6 engine. Unfortunately, I experienced severe transmission issues with less than 100 miles on the odometer. While driving, I suddenly saw the 'Service Transmission' message, and the transmission remained in the gear it was in, refusing to shift. After pulling over to the side of the road and stopping, I put the car in park, then back in drive, and was able to go a little while longer (a couple of miles) before the same thing happened again. This continued until I got back to the dealer, about 10 miles away. The service technician informed me that it would probably require a new transmission, which was very concerning. However, I am happy to report that after the initial hiccup, my Jeep has performed flawlessly. I have now put 17k miles on it and have been on tough 4WD terrain to test its capabilities, with good performance. I am happy all around with my purchase. The original issue only required a new chip that controls the transmission, and the re-learning process that is required when the vehicle has new or updated software.

I rented this car while on vacation, so I don't have long-term data. However, I do have strong impressions after driving it for a week and several hundred miles. I must say, I really like the exterior styling. It's contemporary and clean. The interior was also quite roomy, with nooks and crannies that were perfect for storage. Although the entertainment system could be a bit maddening at times, I'm sure there are some options that I did not discover. For instance, plugging in an iPhone always seemed to start playing iTunes immediately, which was unexpected. On top of this, the USB connected iPhone would sometimes stop playing a song for no apparent reason. Audio playback of Google maps was sometimes garbled. However, the touch screen controls were easy to use and the Bluetooth pairing was fine. Calls could be easily controlled. There seems to be something seriously wrong with the climate control system in the car I had. When the AC would come on, there was a noticeable jolt in the car. This is quite surprising and I'm not sure how this got by their QA team! Add to that, the temperature controls seemed very finicky, with an increment cooler or hotter making far too great a difference in temperature. Unfortunately, there were no dual controls for front passengers, so be prepared to negotiate cabin comfort with your passenger. Despite the full screen in the front, there was no on-board navigation system, which was an odd omission for an otherwise well-equipped car. Well, except for the other lack of electric seat controls. On the bright side, the cruise control was flawless, the headlights were bright, and the windshield washers worked great. Consumer reviews of Jeeps tend towards the negative, as do reliability reports. This is quite disappointing for a brand that is an American icon. If I were to win this car in a raffle or someone gave it to me, I'd probably keep it. However, as for buying one, it's not likely.

  3. Vicente Conn 2024-11-06

I've been driving my 2015 3.2L V6 Jeep Cherokee Latitude for about two weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it! Everyone who has seen the vehicle can only describe it as 'nice' - it really is a very pleasant car. The interior is roomy and made of high-quality materials, even with cloth seats. The dash, steering wheel, and armrests are all covered in leather. The remote start and convenience package are well worth the money. The power liftgate, which you may not think is necessary, is actually very useful and I find myself using it frequently. The only downside so far is the gas mileage. While I love the power and acceleration (271 horsepower!), my gas mileage hovers around 17 mpg. If that's a concern for you, you may want to consider the 4-cylinder option.

  4. Arjun Bashirian 2024-10-29

Despite the numerous issues I have experienced with my car's transmission, I have been persistent in seeking resolution. I have brought my car to the dealer six times, but unfortunately, they seem to be unaware of the widespread transmission problems that have been reported by many other drivers. The internet is filled with complaints about this car's transmission, which often lags and jumps unpredictably, making it difficult to drive with confidence. The service transmission notification frequently lights up on the dashboard, and I have also experienced issues with the key fob and tire pressure sensors. Despite these challenges, I remain impressed with the car's overall appearance and functionality, and I am determined to find a solution to the transmission issue. Although Chrysler Corporate has been friendly, they have not been able to provide the assistance I need. I have an upcoming appointment with the dealer, and I am hopeful that a resolution can be found. Despite the ongoing transmission issue, I am still satisfied with the car's other features, such as its towing capacity and interior functionality.

When I first purchased my Jeep Cherokee Sport (KL) two years ago, I was a bit skeptical. It was the second year (2015) for this body style and the return of the Cherokee into the Jeep lineup. However, I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised with my experience so far. While some longtime Jeep enthusiasts may have criticized its crossover styling and technology over its off-road capabilities, I have found that it suits my needs perfectly. For those who want a serious off-roading vehicle, the Trailhawk is going to be your best bet from the KL family. However, for the large majority of Cherokee owners, off-roading is not on the agenda, so I'll stick with things that definitely stand out for me. I've owned 12 vehicles in the last 20 years, and that includes everything from Ford and Chevrolet to Honda and Toyota, Mercedes and BMW. I'd rate the Cherokee as a 4 star SUV in its class. The interior might not be the most impressive that I've come across, but you get an SD card reader (for audiophiles), Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, CD player and auxiliary input - 5 options for connecting your music! The aesthetics of the dashboard and front cabin are very welcoming and easy to reach everything. The cargo area is about the size you would expect from a Cherokee; anything bigger needed and you should look at the Grand Cherokee. The engine boasts about 184 hp and 170 ft-lbs of torque for the 4 cylinder (cannot comment on 6 cylinder power) and is very nimble in traffic. In the past two years of owning this vehicle, the servicing has been very minimal and light. This Cherokee does feature a lot of computer enhancements, so you will need software updates of your vehicle once every 9 months or so. If you've owned any other modern car from the 2010s, you will know this is not specific to Jeep or the Cherokee.I think that some of the negative reviews may be due to bad luck or impatience. If the owners had not rated it so low, I probably would not have written this review. In reality, I would give this vehicle a score closer to 4 out of 5. These Cherokees are really fun, and I won't be getting rid of mine anytime soon. Additionally, there is a whole community of Cherokee KL owners who absolutely love their Jeeps (and modifying them!). So, don't let a few negative reviews discourage you.
