1988 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 1988 Jeep Cherokee problems
The 1988 Jeep Cherokee, while a popular utility vehicle for daily driving and off-roading, is not without its common problems. Here are some of the issues that owners of this vehicle have reported:
- Rear Brake Adjustment: The rear brake shoes in the 1988 Jeep Cherokee can have excessive play, leading to a lack of brake pressure when going downhill. Manually adjusting the play in the rear brake shoes through the slot on the backing plate can help take out pedal free play and improve brake performance.
- Back Trunk Door: The back trunk door in the 1988 Jeep Cherokee can be difficult to open. Pushing in hard while pushing the button, parking with one or the other rear wheel up on something, or checking for cracks around the hinges can help resolve this issue.
- Radio Wiring: The wiring in the door of the 1988 Jeep Cherokee can interfere with the radio. Checking the wiring and ensuring that it is properly connected can help resolve this issue.
These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1988 Jeep Cherokee. While these issues can be frustrating, many of them can be resolved with relatively simple repairs or adjustments.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
- VIN: 1JCMR7829JT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHEN I COME TO A STOP SIGN, AND AM STOPPED,AND I HAVE TO TURN EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT, WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS SLIGHTLY TURNED AND I RELEASE THE FOOT BRAKE AND APPLY THE GAS, THE ENGINE WILL COMPLETLEY STALL, UNLESS I MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL MORE AND THEN IT MAY CATCH AND START RUNNING AGAIN. THIS HAPPENS NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION I ATTEMPT TO TURN AND THE STALLING MAY PUT ME A FEW FEET OUT INTO THE LINE OF TRAFFIC. I HAVE TO QUICKLY PUT THE SHIFT GEAR IN NEUTRAL AND TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH AGAIN AND THE ENGINE WILL EIMMEDIATELY START. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THE ENGINE WILL EVER STALL, BUT IT PUTS ME IN A VERY DANGEROUS POSITION. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THERE IS A CONNECTION WITH THE STALLING AND THE CERTAIN POSITION THAT THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. I THINK I REMEMBER A FEW WEEKS AGO THAT FORD ALSO HAD SOMEWHAT SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THEIR ENGINE STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING AND ACCIDENTS HAPPENING. HAS JEEP EVER HAD ANY COMPLAINTS OR PROBLEMS SUCH AS WHAT I HAVE? AS IS, I CAN NOT DEPEND ON ENTERING A TRAFFIC PATTERN EITHER TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT IF I WILL NEED TO READILY GET INTO THE DESIRED LANE, FOR FEAR THAT THE ENGINE WILL STALL AND I'LL GET HIT BY SOMEONE WHO FAILS TO NOTICE THAT I HAVE STALLED OUT.*AK
