The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-04-24
  • VIN: 1J4FJ78L5LL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY 4YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I WERE ON OUR WAY HOME WHEN MY BRAKES ALMOST COMPLETELY WENT OUT AT ABOUT 45MPH. LUCKILY WE WERE ON A STRAIGHT COUNTRY BACKROAD WITH A GRAVEL SHOULDER TO AID IN SLOWING DOWN. TOWED THE JEEP TO THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP 2 WEEKS LATER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC ON 04/24/2017 WHERE THEY CONFIRMED THE ISSUE TO BE THE ACTUATOR PUMP UNDER A #702 RECALL. I WAS GIVEN 2 OPTIONS, SELL MY JEEP TO CHRYSLER FOR ~$600 OR GET IT REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS WITH BOTH PARTS AND LABOR TO BE COVERED BY CHRYSLER. CONSIDERING I HAD PURCHASED THE XJ (SO CLEAN AT THE TIME) FOR $3000 PLUS HAD DROPPED $1,100 ON NEW TIRES TWO MONTHS PRIOR IN FEBRUARY I DID NOT FIND SELLING IT FOR ~$600 A FINANCIALLY WISE DECISION. SO I OPTED WITH GETTING THE PARTS REPLACED. WELL FOR THE PAST 4 MONTHS NOW WHENEVER I CHECK IN ON MY JEEP, THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP INFORMS ME THEY ARE STILL WAITING ON PART NUMBERS FROM CHRYSLER SINCE THE CURRENT EMPLOYEES HAVE NOT COME ACROSS THIS RECALL YET AND WHEN I CONTACT CHRYSLER I AM JUST INFORMED THAT THEY NO LONGER MAKE THE ORIGINAL PARTS AND ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR ONE LEFT OUT THERE. THIS LAST WEEK THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE AN ORIGINAL PART PLUS THE OFFER STILL STANDS FOR ~$600. I HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE THIS PAST WEEK ABOUT THE OTHER OPTION I ORIGINALLY AGREED UPON (REPLACING WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS). I DON'T SEE $600 AS A SOLUTION TO THE RECALL AS BOTH NADA AND KBB PRICE MY JEEP FROM $2,200-$4,900 IN MY AREA (BEND, OR). I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO GET MY BELOVED JEEP BACK UP TO SAFETY STANDARDS FOR MY DAUGHTER AND I. I LOVE JEEP, PROBABLY ALWAYS WILL BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE SHORTED MONEY OR SAFETY BECAUSE OF NEGLECT TO REPAIR. THANKS FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO READ THIS.

  • Summary: S10 DIRECT REPLY- LETTER TO THE SECRETARY FROM CONSTITUENT RE A COPY OF A LETTER TO THE VICE PRESIDENT REGARDING A CAR ACCIDENT IN ARCADIA, FL IN MARCH 2013. *SMD A 1990 JEEP CHEROKEE WAS IN A DRAINAGE DITCH, ACROSS FROM TWO OTHER VEHICLES, THAT WERE PARKED. THE OWNERS DAUGHTER GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE JEEP,STARTED IT AND PLACED IT IN DRIVE, WITH THE INTENTION OF REMOVING IT FROM THE DITCH, AS SHE FLOORED THE GAS PEDAL, THE JEEP FLEW OUT OF THE DITCH GOING AIRBORNE, AND KNOCKED DOWN THE OWNER TO THE GROUND, CAUSING BRUISES, NEXT, THE JEEP FLEW OVER THE ROAD NEVER TOUCHING THE PAVEMENT, THE DRIVER DID NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, PRESUMABLY OUT OF FEAR, UNTIL IT RESTED ON TOP OF TWO PARKED VEHICLE. THE DRIVER, WHO WAS NOT LICENSED, CLAIMED THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES AND THE ACCELERATOR. HOWEVER, THE WRECKER SERVICE, WHO WAS A HIGHLY EXPERIENCED CERTIFIED MECHANIC STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES OR ACCELERATOR PEDALS, AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE IN PARK IN ORDER TO START IT.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-01
  • VIN: 1J4FJ78L8LL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE INFAMOUS BENDIX ABS MOTOR/PUMP ASSEMBLY FAILED FOR THE THIRD TIME RESULTING IN A LOSS OF VIRTUALLY ALL STOPPING ABILITY. ON PREVIOUS OCCASIONS (1997 & 2007), CHRYSLER REPAIRED THE VEHICLE PURSUANT TO THE "LIFETIME WARRANTY" IMPOSED IN CONNECTION WITH RECALL #702. IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN 5 WEEKS SINCE THE LOCAL DEALER DIAGNOSED THIS RECURRING DEFECT BUT BOTH THEY AND CHRYSLER CLAIM AN INABILITY TO FIX IT DUE TO THE UNAVAILABILITY TO OBTAIN THE REFERENCED ABS BOOSTER UNIT. THIS ASSERTION IS FALSE. MORE THAN 5200 JEEPS WERE RECALLED AND A REBUILDABLE CORE WAS OBTAINED FOR EACH INSTALLATION. CHRYSLER IS EITHER MAKING NO EFFORT TO OBTAIN EXISTING UNITS OR FAILING TO HAVE NEW ONES MANUFACTURED. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE ONE IN DEALER INVENTORY IN THE U.S. AND NO DELIVERIES ARE SCHEDULED. CHRYSLER IS HOPING THAT BY TELLING A CUSTOMER THAT THE ITEM IS "BACKORDERED", HE/SHE WILL SIMPLY GO AWAY AS IF SUCH A STATUS WAS AN UNAVOIDABLE ACT OF GOD. CHRYSLER'S REFUSAL TO HONOR THEIR OBLIGATION IS PUTTING MANY DRIVERS AT RISK AS SOME ARE CERTAINLY DRIVING THOSE JEEPS WITH UNASSISTED BRAKING WAITING FOR THE PART THAT WILL NEVER ARRIVE. I FOUND NUMEROUS MESSAGES ON JEEP FORUM WEBSITES WHEREIN 1990 OWNERS WERE COMPLAINING OF THIS PART UNAVAILABILITY SCAM AS EARLY AS 1999. NHTSA NEEDS TO COMPEL COMPLIANCE THROUGH EVERY AVAILABLE MEANS FORTHWITH.

THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY AND WITH TIME, BECAME WORSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 96V260000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK) BUT WAS ADVISED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-01
  • VIN: 1J4FJ87L8LL
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I HAVE OWNED A JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT WHICH WAS PURCHASED NEW IN 1990 FOR YEARS NOW. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION EVENTS MORE THAN TEN TIMES NOW, MOST RECENTLY IN 2008. IT SEEMS EACH TIME I WILL BE DRIVING ALONG, POSSIBLY BRAKING, AND ZOOM! THE ENGINE REVS AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES. IT IS LIKE DRIVING A CAR OUT OF CONTROL. I AM AWARE THAT CHRYSLER HAS BLAMED SUCH OCCURRENCES ON OPERATOR ERROR BUT, MORE THAN ONCE NOW, I HAVE CHECKED TO BE SURE MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL WHEN THIS ACCELERATION WAS HAPPENING. THE WHOLE TIME I'M STOMPING ON THE BRAKE BUT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES AGAINST IT CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO FASTER EVEN THOUGH I'M BRAKING. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ENOUGH TIMES THAT I HAVE EVEN HAD NIGHTMARES ABOUT IT. I KNOW I SHOULD JUST BUY A NEW VEHICLE BUT I MORALLY I COULD NOT SELL IT TO ANYONE, NOR TRADE IT IN, BECAUSE I KNOW THIS PROBLEM IS REAL. I THINK CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE MANY ACCIDENTS THIS HAS UNDOUBTEDLY CAUSED OVER THE YEARS. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO GET THE VEHICLE REPAIRED FIRST, AND THEN THEY WOULD REIMBURSE HER FOR THE COST OF THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 137,000.

Thank you for your business.

I love this car! Although I had to replace the entire cooling system, exhaust system, and shocks, I recently discovered a severe oil leak and the frame is rusted out. But besides that, it's great! Who wants it?

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you that this jeep was actually my first car! I bought it about 3 years ago with 119,000 miles on it, and now it has 130,000. While I do have a few things that I don't particularly like about it, such as the safari look in the interior and the poor gas mileage (I get about 14mpg in the summer and about 11 in the winter), it still holds a special place in my heart.

  4. Dallas Ebert 2024-02-04

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that while the JEEP may only get 10 MPG, it's still a great vehicle for climbing steep hills, especially with the LOW shift gear range. However, I do agree that the plastic insides can crumble with age and rust can show up in unexpected places, especially from road salted winter use. It's a shame that they weren't better sealed from the factory. Even the newer Jeeps can still be a bit of a gas hog, but they're still a lot of fun to drive!

Hi there! I've had my Jeep for almost 7 years now and I absolutely love its style and looks. While the inline 6 cyl. with an automatic transmission provides lots of power, I have noticed that the seats can be uncomfortable on long distances and there is considerable interior noise. However, the 4wd works great and with some preventative maintenance, it's a good and affordable 4wd small SUV overall.

I love my jeep! I've had it since I was 15 and it's been such a reliable car. The only downside is that the insurance can be a bit expensive due to the 4wd, but it's worth it. With 120k miles on it, I've only had to change the oil, add water, and fix a few minor things. This jeep has great acceleration and runs like a dream!

  2. Raleigh Raynor 2024-11-21

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1987 AMC Jeep Cherokee. Even though it's not a recent model, I still get great gas mileage with it! With a manual transmission and 168000 miles on the engine, I'm still getting between 23-26 MPG/HWY, and even up to 27 mpg in the past 6 months with new oversize 235-75-R15 tires. When we ordered it new, the salesman seemed surprised at the non-standard rear end, but he said that it should get good mileage. I did notice some sluggishness at first, like riding a bike uphill in hi-gear, but overall I'm really happy with my Jeep. I hope this helps with your SUV reviews for your daughter!

  3. Leif Mayer 2024-11-02

You're in for a treat with this one! It's incredibly reliable and will take you anywhere you want to go in the Rocky Mountains. It's like having a mountain goat by your side!

  4. William Welch 2024-10-22

I've been a proud owner of my Cherokee for three years now and I plan to remain a loyal Jeep enthusiast for life. Prior to owning my Jeep, I had a 1991 Chevy S10 Blazer, but it simply couldn't compare to the Cherokee. With 106k miles on it, I've only had to replace the starter, blower motor (my fault), and u-joint. If you're looking for a versatile trail rig that can handle any situation, then the Cherokee is the perfect choice.

The Jeep is a solid and reliable machine. We highly recommend giving it a try!
