The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 2020 Jeep Cherokee problems

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the drivetrain, engine, transmission, brakes, steering and suspension, climate system, and infotainment system.

  1. Drivetrain issues: Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, and electronic stability control are all areas where issues have been reported. For example, some owners have experienced driveline vibration, which can be caused by worn or damaged drivetrain components. Additionally, electrical failure in drivetrain components can lead to problems with traction control and electronic stability control systems.
  2. Transmission problems: Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement, and gear selector and linkage issues have been reported. Some owners have experienced transmission hesitation, rough shifting, or slipping, which can be caused by a variety of factors including low transmission fluid levels, faulty solenoids, or worn clutch components.
  3. Engine issues: Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt, gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks, and engine knock or ping have all been reported as issues. For example, some owners have experienced engine knock or ping, which can be caused by improper fuel octane, ignition timing issues, or worn engine components.
  4. Brake problems: Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, and regenerative braking have all been reported as issues. For example, some owners have experienced premature brake pad wear, which can be caused by a variety of factors including aggressive driving habits, improper brake pad material, or worn brake rotors.
  5. Steering and suspension issues: Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, and electronic or air suspension have all been reported as issues. For example, some owners have experienced steering wheel vibration, which can be caused by worn or damaged steering or suspension components.
  6. Climate system issues: AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, and refrigerant leakage have all been reported as issues. For example, some owners have experienced issues with the climate control system not blowing cold air, which can be caused by a variety of factors including low refrigerant levels, a faulty compressor, or a damaged evaporator.
  7. Infotainment system issues: Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display, windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect, sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank have all been reported as issues. For example, some owners have experienced issues with the infotainment system freezing or crashing, which can be caused by software bugs or hardware issues.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners, and not all 2020 Jeep Cherokee owners will experience these problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider having a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition before purchasing.

  • VIN: 1C4PJMDX6LD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2020 Jeep Cherokee limited started making a loud clunking sound when on the break coming to a stop. It also makes a grinding noise for a mine while accelerating speed and then will shift back to normal. I have had it looked at and the dealership is saying that it is either the transmission or the PTU, neither of which I can afford to repair and with 70,000 miles on the car has no warranty. I was in an accident 2/24 and thought it was related to that however it is not. I did not have my car most of the summer while trying to figure this out and now there’s too many miles. I am a travel nurse and I drive 2 hours to work and o do not feel safe. There isn’t a recall however there are many recalls for the same issue but different years. I am frustrated because this is something that they should fix for obvious related reasons with other years having the same issue.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 1C4PJMDXXLD
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: 1. This is not a safety issue. This is a cosmetic issue. 2. Not applicable to warning lights. 3. General Issue: Bottom portion of drivers seat, reported to be leather, is peeling. This peeling is discoloring the seat and shows signs that it will continue over the entire seat. Never before have I seen this issue with leather seats (in many previous vehicles), including other Jeep vehicles. The issue was confirmed by an authorized Jeep dealer and they provided me an estimate including labor to be more than $1000. This peeling is of course, a cosmetic issue, but it looks awful and should not happen on a Jeep that is only 4 years old and has been gently taken care of. I realize this is a "wear and tear" issue, however there is no over-use - only usual getting in and out of the car. Leather should wear much longer and should not peel over time.

Negative 2020 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Quinn Donnelly 2024-10-12

This vehicle has several areas that could benefit from improvement. The headrests are too tall and jut forward, causing discomfort and a constant need to lean forward. Additionally, the B pillar can obstruct visibility for taller individuals. The infotainment system could be more user-friendly, with more accessible controls and knobs. The climate control system could also benefit from easier accessibility. While the vehicle may not be the most powerful, it still offers reliable performance. Overall, there is room for improvement, but with some adjustments, this vehicle could be a great choice for many drivers.

  2. Archibald Hoeger 2024-08-20

I recently traded in my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk for a 2020 model, but unfortunately, I have been left feeling disappointed. While the drive is still solid and quiet, I have noticed that the engine lacks a little low-end punch when going uphill on pavement. What's more, the 2020 model lacks some of the neat little features that made the Trailhawk such a cool vehicle to own, such as a locking fuel door, the ability to change the background design on the radio, and leather bolsters on the seats. One of the biggest disappointments for me was the lack of a hidden cargo compartment under the passenger seat, as well as the inability to have the passenger seat fold flat forward. Lastly, the 2020 model no longer has lighted cup holders. I understand that these features may seem superficial to some, but they were important to me. I must admit that I did not test drive the new model before purchasing it, and now I am not too sure I would have bought it if I had known that some of my favorite features were no longer available. However, I do realize that the dealer gave me an incredible amount of money on a trade and a price on the new one that I couldn't pass up.

  3. Ricardo Ziemann 2024-08-05

Leasing that amazing thing for 42 months! It's a 2019 2L turbo Fiat engine Trail Hawk, fully loaded with a sunroof - beautiful! When you lease, make sure to get the tow coverage, just in case. If you bought it, be aware that it may become a money pit after 3 years and the resale value may be low. However, I know people with the same car who take frequent trips to the dealer due to electronics issues. Italian cars can be expensive and sometimes faulty, but they're worth it for the style and performance!

  4. Jabari Langworth 2024-04-12

I strongly advise against purchasing a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Upland. The transmission failed twice, once at 23,000 miles and again at 63,000 miles, causing the car to completely lock up. It is not a reliable vehicle and I recommend investing in a more dependable option.

  5. Lawson Kreiger 2024-02-25

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee has been experiencing issues with hesitation, bucking, and making clicking sounds when coasting and then applying gas again. Additionally, some drivers have reported gurgling or rattling sounds when accelerating. Despite multiple attempts by the dealer, the root cause of these issues remains unclear. As a result, some customers have expressed dissatisfaction with their purchase of this new car.

This is my third jeep and I have loved every one. I'm in my 70's and it fits me perfectly.

  3. Trenton Willms 2024-10-03

I had never driven a Jeep but they kept catching my eye while riding up and down the roads. After considering several different SUVs and reviewing websites, we went to the Jeep dealership to take one for a test drive. Loved it! You can't beat the looks and the value. I love my Cherokee!

  4. Americo Dicki 2024-09-09

Our Cherokee has been a fantastic vehicle for us, with 20k miles driven and zero problems. The car looks great (although that's subjective), and provides a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride. The seats are comfortable, and there is ample front and rear legroom. The infotainment system is also very good. We have been averaging 28 mpg, with more highway than city miles. While the 2.4 motor is suitable for most users, if you require snappy acceleration, we recommend the 3.2 or 2.0T. If you do opt for the 2.4, it is important to check the oil regularly. The transmission works flawlessly, with no hard shifts. We believe that Jeep has done an excellent job with this vehicle, and while there were some issues in the first couple of years, they have now been resolved. Despite this, many buyers are still looking elsewhere. However, we continue to enjoy our Cherokee immensely.

I purchased my 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 6 cyl 4x4 brand new with all possible options. I absolutely love the solid and comfortable ride, as well as the power and safety features. In black, it's a stunning vehicle too. It handles great in snow, rough terrain and on the highway. I have now driven over 100,000 km and have only spent about $2,000 on maintenance. I hope my good fortune continues. I am so grateful for the solid reputation of the 3.2 ltr Penstar engine. The only downside is the small fuel tank. Between city and highway driving, it can be challenging to get over 500km per tank. When the low fuel light comes on, I only get a mere 50km warning. This requires some careful planning when driving on the Prairies where gas stations are few and far between. Overall, this is one of the best vehicles I've had in the last 25 years, after the muscle cars I drove in the 1960s to 1990s.
