Congratulations on your recent purchase of a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee classic with 110,000 miles! You're clearly a big fan of the body style, so it's understandable that you're torn on whether or not to put bigger wheels on it. I've owned a Cherokee for 5 years. I paid $2k for it and invested in a 3in Rough Country suspension lift and 30in Yokohama Geolander AT tires. I haven't encountered a hill in Arizona that I couldn't climb. I've never had to turn around on a trail. Keep in mind that Jeeps are built, not bought. I've heard stories of people's Jeeps breaking down early, but I can tell you first-hand that it's usually because the owner did something wrong. The 4.0 straight 6 engine is bulletproof, both economical and powerful, on the trail and on the road. There will always be a Cherokee in my garage, even if it's not my primary vehicle. I can't say enough good things about it. Jeep Cherokees refuse to die, and remember, they're built, not bought.

I owned a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0L engine, 2WD, auto trans, and base model with no electric power options. It was a great vehicle that served its purpose well. The backseat could flip forward and down, creating a lot of room in the back for me to load a lot of stuff. The side-mounted full-size spare tire didn't take up much space, so it was okay. The Jeep had nice acceleration with the 4.0L engine, and fuel economy was pretty good too. I drove mine with respect and it rarely gave me trouble. I put some moderate all-terrain tires on it, and the Cherokee performed great in winter while I spent time in Northern New York dealing with the lake effect snow that was pretty bad. However, there were a few issues. The check engine light would come on intermittently, which caused some problems during my yearly smog test in California. Luckily, it went off a few times, so I immediately drove to the nearest place doing smog tests and knocked out my annual test. Soon thereafter, it would come back on. When I first took it to the dealer in Huntington Beach, CA, they told me it was a sensor in the transmission that they had seen many times, and nothing was wrong with the transmission, just the sensor. They said the transmission on these Jeeps was the best they ever saw, but the sensor in my model was a tiny little part that did nothing. Otherwise, a repair was going to cost a lot to drop the transmission and replace the sensor located above it. So I just dealt with it. Another thing that happened, probably associated with that sensor, was the electronic gauges would just fail. All the warning lights on the gauge cluster would light up, then go off, and the odometer would stop clocking miles. I have to admit the non-functioning odometer was awesome because the Jeep remained a low mileage vehicle for almost the entirety of my ownership. Sometimes it would work, and most times it did not.I attached an old school GPS with velcro to my steering column to see how fast I was going. After parking my Jeep for many years while I was overseas, I returned to find that the A/C, power steering, and all the attachments to the engine had failed and would throw a belt if I drove too much. I felt guilty about trying to sell it to a private party, so instead, I went into a Chrysler dealership one day after the check engine light went off and looked at a used vehicle (not a Chrysler product but a low mileage Japanese model) on their lot. The salespeople kept trying to bring my Jeep into the deal and wasted my time all day with nonsense offers for warranties, upgrades, etc. However, I held firm and got a great deal on the used truck they were selling. They kept asking over and over if I wanted to trade in my Jeep, but I kept telling them no. It was the best car I ever owned, and I wanted to keep it forever, which was total bull. However, they bought it and made a great offer for a trade-in on it and reduced the selling price on the other truck I was looking at. They never even once went out to look at my Cherokee or asked to drive it. They gave me way more than it was worth. In hindsight, they probably drove it around back and poured sludge in the engine to destroy it under the Obama bailout to give dealers $4500 for clunkers. It's kind of sad to see that Jeep go. If you can find a low mileage, well-cared-for Cherokee XJ from that time period, buy it.

What an amazing story! It's so heartwarming to hear about a car that has been so reliable and well-loved. This car was leased in 1997, driven until the lease was up, and then purchased in 2001. Since then, it has accumulated an impressive 387,000 miles and is still running strong! The only repairs needed were for the AC compressor and muffler/plumbing, and a crankcase sensor that had to be replaced three times, but not for three years now. Even after 270K miles, the cylinders still had the original cross hatching and no ridges! It's truly amazing how reliable the 4.0 engine is. I would love to see this car come back with the 4.0 engine, and I would buy it until I die!

Overall, it's a fun SUV to drive. However, the quality of the ride could be improved. The interior is basic with no perks, but it gets the job done. There is some wind noise once you exceed about 40-50 mph and the engine can be loud. If you're planning on taking long trips, you may find it uncomfortable to drive. The ride can be bumpy, so if you're looking for a smooth ride, this may not be the vehicle for you.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that my 99 white ltd has been a reliable car for almost 4 years now. I did have to replace the front wheel bearings, but other than that, it's been pretty good. I've never had any issues with the engine. :)

The car has held up pretty well! It was bought for the teenage kids and it lasted a good five years. While there were a few minor issues, such as needing to replace the radio, window regulator, and fog light switch, as well as occasional dashboard blanking and an A/C leak, overall it was a reliable car.
