1996 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 1996 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee, particularly the 1996 model, has been known for several common problems that have affected its reliability and performance. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:
- Engine Oil Leaks: One of the most common problems with the Jeep Cherokee is engine oil leaks, which can come from the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, or timing cover gaskets. These leaks can lead to a decrease in engine performance and may cause the vehicle to overheat.
- Transmission Problems: The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly prone to transmission problems, such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, and rough coasting. These issues are often linked to the model’s ZF 9-speed automatic transmission, which has been the source of thousands of complaints from drivers.
- Throttle Position Sensor: The throttle position sensor is located on the throttle body and can cause rough running engine, hesitation while accelerating, and hard starting. Replacing the sensor or the entire throttle body can resolve this issue.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are a common problem with the Jeep Cherokee, particularly from the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. These leaks can lead to a decrease in engine performance and may cause the vehicle to overheat.
- Transmission Range Selector Switch: The transmission range selector switch can cause issues with shifting gears, particularly in the 1996 Jeep Cherokee. Replacing the switch can resolve this issue.
- Exhaust Manifold: The exhaust manifold can crack and leak, causing a loss of power and decreased fuel efficiency. Replacing the manifold can resolve this issue.
- Ignition Wires: The ignition wires can become worn and damaged, leading to a decrease in engine performance and potential engine failure. Replacing the ignition wires can resolve this issue.
- Frame Rot: The frame of the Jeep Cherokee can show signs of rot, particularly in areas with harsh winters. This can lead to a decrease in structural integrity and potential safety issues.
- Handling Problems: Some Jeep Cherokee owners have reported handling problems, particularly after hitting a pothole. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require the expertise of a mechanic.
- Backup Sensor Alarm: Some Jeep Cherokee models have been known to have issues with the backup sensor alarm, which can beep unexpectedly and won’t stop until the engine has been turned off for a while.
These are just some of the most common problems reported by Jeep Cherokee owners. It is important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues, and regular maintenance and repairs can help prevent many of these problems from occurring.

- VIN: 1JF4FJB8S7T
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WE BOUGHT AN IMPORTED RIGHT-HAND DRIVE JEEP FROM POSTAL PETE, GALENA IL, FOR A MAIL ROUTE. THIS IS NOT SAFETY MAYBE: 1. THE OIL PRESSURE GUAGE, INSTEAD OF BEING REPAIRED IN THE DASH, THEY ADDED AN AUXILLARY OIL GAUGE BELOW THE DASH, WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SAFELY LOOK AT THE GAUGE. 2. THE ODOMETER/SPEEDOMETER UNIT DOESN'T MEASURE CORRECTLY I THINK. 3. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH & CONSOLE DON'T WORK. BECAUSE OF THE TAKATA RECALLS, I LOOKED AT YOUR SITE. WHEN WE COMPLAINED WITH THE DEALER THEIR ATTITUDE WAS TOUGH YOU PAID FOR IT. ALSO THE REAR END WAS BAD. MY HUSBAND WENT BACK BEFORE HE LEFT IL FOR FL. THEY EXCUSED IT SAYING IT WAS TIRES. MY HUSBAND KNEW THEY WERE LYING (HE DOES WORK ON VEHICLES FOR US). WE ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE REAR END. THIS COMPLAINT IS MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTER POSTAL PETE THAN IT IS ABOUT THE VEHICLE. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO THIS TO CUSTOMERS. ALSO THEY REQUIRED A CHECK IN ADVANCE, THEREBY MAKING IT SO WE COULD NOT REFUSE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY HAD OUR MONEY. NOT NICE PEOPLE. DIS-HONESTY. I RETIRED DEC. 2011. I DON'T REMEMBER PURCHASE DATE. YOU REQUIRE SOMETHING. PICKED UP 11/02/10 REG. 12/07/2010 THANK YOU. ALICIA

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE LEAVING HOME FROM WORK, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHUTTER AND FAIL. I MANAGED TO GET HOME AT A SPEED OF 40MPH SINCE I NOTICED THAT AT A HIGHER SPEED, THE VEHICLE WOULD TRY TO STALL. THE NEXT DAY I TRIED TO TURN ON THE VEHICLE BUT IT WOULD NOT TURN ON. I CALLED A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS THRU CELL PHONE TO SHAKE A BIT THE CABLES TO COMPUTER COMPONENTS AND CABLES TO DISTRIBUTOR COMPONENTS. THE VEHICLE TURNED ON BUT WITH PROBLEMS. I MANAGED TO DRIVE TO MECHANIC SHOP WHERE THE CHEROKEE WAS LEFT FOR TESTING AND REPAIRS. THE DIAGNOSTICS SHOWED A FAULTY COMPUTER. THE COMPUTER WAS REPLACED. ABOUT THREE MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN AT A CROSS ROAD AND TURNED OFF. A TRUCK NEARLY STRUCK ME BECAUSE I COULDN'T GET OUT ON TIME. THE MECHANIC HAD TO SHOW UP AT THE SITE AND HAD SOME PROBLEMS STARTING THE CHEROKEE. THE DIAGNOSTICS, ANOTHER BLOWN COMPUTER. THE MECHANIC ORDERED ANOTHER COMPUTER WITH UPGRADE (HAD TO WAIT ABOUT A MONTH) ORIGINAL CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WAS ADDED. ALL SEEMED TO WORK WELL UNTIL YESTERDAY OCT/2/2013 WHEN I WENT OUT FOR A RIDE WITH MY SON AND THE CHEROKEE STALLED AND TURNED OFF. THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS BEFORE. I HAVE SPENT ABOUT $1,000.00 TRYING TO GET MY JEEP CHEROKEE TO RUN PROPERLY AND NOW I'M AFRAID TO TAKE IT OUT TO THE STREET. I HAVE A FAMILY OF 4 AND I WORRY THAT THE CHEROKEE WOULD FAIL ME BY STALLING AGAIN AT A CROSSROAD CAUSING A FATAL ACCIDENT TO ME OR MY FAMILY BECAUSE OF THIS ELECTRICAL FAILURE. ALL CABLES WERE CHECKED FOR SHORTS BUT NOTHING SOLVES THE PROBLEM. I DID SOME RECALL SEARCH BUT NOTHING OFFICIAL ALTHOUGH SOME JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE USERS REPORT THE SAME PROBLEMS FOR THEIR 4.0L ENGINE (MY JEEP CHEROKEE IS ALSO 4.0L) COINCIDENCE? I LOVE MY CHEROKEE BUT FEEL THAT I CAN'T RELY ANYMORE ON IT AS FOR SAFETY. HAD IT FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS WITHOUT PROBLEMS THE FIRST 5 YEARS. *TR

I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Jeep! It's impressive that you've been able to put so many miles on it with relatively few issues. The I6 engine sounds like a real standout feature, and it's great to hear that the paint and body still look new. While there have been a few necessary repairs along the way, it's clear that this vehicle has been a reliable constant in your life through many changes. Of course, as with any car, there are some areas for improvement, such as the highway noise and the interior materials. However, it's clear that the Jeep's strong 4WD and off-road capability are what really set it apart from other SUVs. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I bought my Jeep used with 80,000 miles on it. I was worried it might have problems, but it has been incredibly reliable and has only needed regular maintenance. While the gas mileage is fair, I think most vehicles (except hybrids) are in the same boat with gas prices. It has been a wonderful Jeep and we've even talked about upgrading to a newer one, but I'm not quite ready to give it up yet. With 159,000 miles on it, I wouldn't hesitate to take it on our next cross country trip!

The Cherokee is an incredibly reliable vehicle, having run smoothly for 219,000 miles. Despite being hit from behind and now being used mainly for hauling, it still runs great. I have complete confidence in its ability to serve my family, and I would not hesitate to purchase another Cherokee. Its exceptional value for the money is unmatched.

I'm so happy with my 1996 Jeep Cherokee! I bought it at 126,500 miles and it's been a blast to drive. It's a sleek, black Sport 4Dr 4WD with gray cloth interior, OEM aluminum wheels, and Goodyear Tracker tires. The car is in fantastic condition, both inside and out. It looks so cool and commanding, like Jeep's new Commander design team went retro and modeled their design off of the original '84 Cherokee. I'd even say that the new Commander is to the original '84 Cherokee what the new Mustang is to the original '65 Mustang. And with the shift-on-the-fly 4WD, I can handle any weather in Chicago. It's been a lot of fun driving this car!

I have owned my Jeep for 10 years and it still brings me joy to drive. Its fantastic acceleration up to 70MPH is impressive and I have even had some fun racing against Mustangs. The engine is the best one ever put into a Jeep. My wife also enjoys driving it. Over the past 10 years, I have only had to spend around $600 on repairs, with the biggest expense being to replace the radiator with a new aluminum one with a lower pressure cap, which happened last month at 163,000 miles. The interior carrying room is also great, and I can even remove the lower back seat and put the back down to get more room than that offered by the new SUV imitators. I really wish they still made this model.

I recently got this jeep and I absolutely love it! I got it in the winter and it snowed the next day, but I didn't have to worry about slipping once while in 4WD. It's actually my first 4WD vehicle and I don't think I'll ever go back to a non-4WD car again. This thing is amazing!

You'll be amazed at how little upkeep this vehicle requires, even after 6 years of use. It's been well taken care of and has no rust. The original exhaust is still in great condition, and we've only had to replace the shocks at 35k and the wheel bearings at 42k. You won't have to worry about any smoke or oil issues either. It's a shame that Jeep discontinued this model in 2002, as it's a truly solid vehicle.

Overall, it's a great little mule! Although there are a few minor issues such as rattles in the door, a dome light that stopped working, a broken rear window washer, and some less-than-ideal cup holders, I still appreciate it a lot. The engine and transmission have been trouble-free even after 91K miles, and its off-road capability is unbeatable.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. While I've had it for 7 years and it's been a reliable car, I did encounter an issue with the frame rail and steering gearbox bolts cracking. Unfortunately, my car wasn't on the recall list and Chrysler wouldn't cover the repairs. I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone considering a regular Cherokee to be aware of this issue. It's important to note that thousands of cars are affected by this problem and it could potentially cause a crash. In my personal experience, my frame rail cracked and I lost my steering three times in the last 1.5 years. Just wanted to share my story and hope it helps someone out there!

I really like this Jeep! It has all the advantages of smaller SUVs, such as ground clearance, storage, passenger room, roof racks, and being higher up than small cars (plus it looks like a 4WD). Additionally, it has the benefits of a compact car, with a good ride and excellent fuel economy. There's no extra drivetrain to weigh it down or maintain, and transmission/clutch repairs are a breeze compared to its 4WD cousin (no transfer case to deal with). Overall, it's a great little SUV for the budget-minded person. Also, the 2.5 4-cylinder engine is surprisingly spunky. It's not a slouch as you might think; it's no 4.0 liter, but more power means less fuel economy. In this day and age, I'd rather have the torquey 4-banger! It does the job quite well.
