2016 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 1C4PJMBSXGW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The PTU in our Jeep, was replaced once in 2021. In February of this year I go a notice from Chrysler extending my warranty on my 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 4WD to 15 years/unlimited miles. It also mentioned some of the failure indicators were sudden power decrease and a banging noise, which we were experiencing, and instructed contact your dealer for a get a diagnosis regarding the issue. We took the vehicle to the dealer and they said they couldn't find the problem. [XXX], my wife was driving when she heard a clunk and grinding noise, we immediately to the vehicle to the dealer where it was determined that the PTU failed and resulted in a Transmission failure. We were told the warranty didn't cover the mating flanges between the PTU and the Transmission, where the bolts broke. Chrysler Customer Care agreed with them and would not cover the cost of the repairs. It is my contention that either Chrysler is continuing to out a defective product, or the dealer failed to properly torque the flange bolts when the PTU was replaced in 2021. Not sure if it is possible for NHTSA to inspect my vehicle for possible defects and a cause as to why the flange bolts would break. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
- VIN: 1C4PJMDB4GW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Jeep skips gears on highway and loses power while accelerating to get up to speed. Took jeep to multiple dealers which all has said it's the torque converter. My jeep is a 2016 with only 77k miles on it. It jerks you at stop lights to almost hitting the car in front of you or losing all power in highway when trying to merge on. I have read that there has been recalls on 2016 jeep cherokee transmissions. Is there a recall on mine?
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: 1C4PJLDB7GW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving in a parking lot at under 10 mph my car stalled and there was an audible ding at that point I received an error stating "shift to park". This happened twice within an hour or so and both times I was in a parking lot and advancing slowly uphill. I am very nervous and curious if this is another software update issue. I had a transmission error a couple years ago where my car just ceased to move. It was fixed with the update.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: 1C4PJMCB7GW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Since owning the vehicle the transmission has been an issue. From disengaging gears, to hard shifting, to Rear PTU fluid seeping from the driver's side rear axle due to a design flaw; this truck has been an absolute nightmare. The dealer has stated multiple times that the transmission is not faulty and performing as expected. 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee's with the same rear PTU and transmissions have had recalls and PTU replaced, etc. but yet my VIN does not have any recall yet. I have video evidence of the transmission performing erratically and not as intended from just about 50,000 miles. Yet, Jeep would not do anything to remedy the situation. They have flashed the software, performed a rear differential service (which I had to pay for, wasn't free), and done everything to avoid taking accountability for their design flaw and product failures.
2016 Jeep Cherokee recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
- Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
- Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. Positive 2016 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

I recently had a terrible accident with my 2016 Jeep Cherokee. Despite the damage to the car, I was amazed at how well it protected me. The car did exactly what it was designed to do, which was to keep me safe. In fact, I was told that if I had been driving my old car, a 2010 Volkswagen, the accident would have been much worse. I highly recommend the Jeep Cherokee to anyone in the market for a reliable and safe vehicle. It handles great in all weather conditions, and the ride is the best I've ever experienced. If you're considering a Jeep, I also recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both of these vehicles are top of the line in terms of performance and reliability.

Wow, Jeep has really come a long way! I have the Trailhawk with the 3.2 V6 and I absolutely love it. The only thing I would say is that the 9-speed transmission can be a bit slow to respond at times, especially when downshifting to passing gear. However, the Jeep dealer has updated the software twice and it has definitely improved. The cargo space is a bit small for the class, but it's still more than enough and the vehicle performs amazingly. In fact, there's nothing else in the segment that can come close to the capability and comfort of the Cherokee, especially in this price range. I would highly recommend it, with one caveat: spend the extra money for the V6. I test drove both and the 4-cylinder just doesn't have enough power, especially when you need to pass or merge into traffic on highways.

I arranged test drives for both the Jeep and a Mazda CX-5 on the same day. My fiance and I test drove the Mazda and we both really enjoyed it. We had a Mazda bias going in and only tested the Jeep to compare it to something. However, we finished the test drive and absolutely fell in love with the Jeep. As someone who is 6'6

Great car! Although, I would have preferred the V-6. In my opinion, the U connect feature is not worth the extra 895. Overall, it's a good car, but the 4 cylinder could be better.

I've been driving my 2016 Latitude since December 2015, after enjoying 11 years of trouble-free driving with my 2005 Grand Cherokee. I'm absolutely amazed at all the bells and whistles that this mid-price Cherokee has to offer. In fact, my wife drives a $104,000 2007 Mercedes SL550, and I'm thrilled to say that the Cherokee has many of the same features, and in some cases, even more. We opted for the bigger engine upgrade, the 3.2-V6-25+mpg, which I highly recommend. I can't speak to the performance of the new 2.0 turbo, however. If you're considering purchasing a Cherokee, I suggest you opt for the Comfort/Convenience package and the UConnect 8.4

In September 2016, we purchased a Jeep after looking at several comparable vehicles. We were initially drawn to the Jeep due to its pricing, but unfortunately, it has not lived up to our expectations. From the beginning, it has burned excessive amounts of oil, which is not normal for a brand new vehicle. We took it to the dealership, but their response was not satisfactory. Despite performing an oil consumption test, we were left waiting for the findings. Recently, while driving in rush hour traffic, the engine light started flashing, and the service transmission light came on, causing the car to go into limp mode. This was a scary experience, and we were almost rear-ended. We contacted the dealership, but they did not return our calls. We eventually took the car in, but we have not heard back from them since. We strongly advise against buying a Jeep, as it has been the worst car we have ever owned.

We were initially pleased with our vehicle when it was new. However, our experience changed when we encountered a transmission failure and were stranded for three hours with only 10,500 miles on the vehicle. Despite this setback, we received excellent service from the local Jeep dealer who upgraded five computer modules to fix the issue. Unfortunately, the problem resurfaced the next day while we were on the highway, and the vehicle had to be taken back to the shop. The mechanics discovered that a valve on the transmission had failed, which was concerning for us as the vehicle was so new. We were visiting Florida at the time and the thought of driving 1,400 miles back home to upstate New York with an unreliable vehicle was worrying. As a result, we decided to trade the vehicle immediately, even though we lost half of its purchase value. While we have been loyal Chrysler/Jeep owners for many years, we have decided to sever our ties with Blevins dealership and any Chrysler products. We have noticed that many people have complained about similar issues with Chrysler products online, which suggests that the company may use inferior components.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep. Although I purchased it new and have only put 28K miles on it, I have had to make several trips to the dealership service department. I've had to replace the computer, the rear end (even though I don't off-road), and have had some sunroof and electrical issues. It's been a bit of a disappointment, as I had planned on keeping it for a while, but I just wanted to give you a heads up. Buyer beware!

Although there were some issues during the warranty period, I can confidently say that this car is equipped with a powerful 3.2L engine. The transmission may shift slowly at times, but it still provides a smooth ride. While there were some minor trim and seal issues, they were easily resolved. Unfortunately, after three years of use, the transmission began to experience some roughness and difficulty shifting. Despite this, I was able to sell the car and move on. Overall, this car has a lot of potential and is worth considering for those in the market for a reliable vehicle.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your 2016 Jeep Cherokee. It must be frustrating to have a water leak that causes soaked floorboards, especially when the dealership has been unable to fix it despite multiple attempts. I understand your concerns about the long-term reliability of the vehicle and the potential health risks associated with mold. As a busy person with a high-stress job, kids, and a mother suffering from dementia, you need a reliable car that you can count on. I hope that Jeep/Chrysler will be able to resolve this issue for you soon and provide you with the refund you deserve. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist you.
