1993 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 1993 Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee, first introduced in 1993, has been a popular choice among car enthusiasts for its robust design and off-road capabilities. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners over the years.
One of the most common issues with the 1993 Jeep Cherokee is the engine stalling or shutting off while driving. This problem has been reported in various model years, including 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999, with the highest number of complaints for the 1997 and 1998 models. The issue has been linked to the vehicle's fuel system and electrical components, with some owners reporting that the engine stalls while accelerating or idling.
Another significant problem with the Jeep Cherokee is transmission issues. The 2014 and 2015 models have been reported to have the most transmission problems, including stuck gears, poor throttle response, and rough coasting. These issues have been linked to the vehicle's ZF 9-speed automatic transmission, which has been the source of thousands of complaints from drivers of the 2014 Cherokee. The manufacturer of the ZF 9-speed transmission claims that the problems aren't mechanical in nature, but rather caused by a software glitch. However, multiple software updates haven't fully resolved the transmission issues in most Cherokees.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has also been recalled due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising the safety of the driver. Jeep dealers updated the transmission software to resolve the issue. Another recall was issued in late 2018 involving about 86,053 units of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee equipped with 2.4L engines due to improperly calibrated transmissions, causing the engine to stall.
The 2015 Jeep Cherokee also has its fair share of engine issues. Owners of the affected model have reported cases where their vehicles would suddenly shut down while driving with no indication from the dashboard of any fault code. Some drivers also noticed that their vehicles would stall when the oil life indicator falls below 30%, causing the engine to stall. Most drivers were able to resolve the issue by topping up on engine oil while others had to replace the handler or intelligent power distribution unit.
In addition to engine and transmission problems, the Jeep Cherokee has also been reported to have issues with its backup sensor alarm. Several owners have reported that it would beep unexpectedly and wouldn't stop until the engine has been turned off for a while. This issue isn't exclusive to Cherokees, as other Jeep models have had similar problems with their backup sensor alarm.
In summary, the Jeep Cherokee has been reported to have several common problems, including engine stalling or shutting off while driving, transmission issues, and problems with the backup sensor alarm. While these issues have been reported in various model years, the 2014 and 2015 models seem to have the most significant number of complaints. It is essential for owners to stay up-to-date with recalls and maintenance to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1J4FT68S3PL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I OWN A 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE AND THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER ON THE DRIVER SIDE LOCKED UP ON JULY 4, 2017, WHILE DRIVING AROUND TOWN, ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER BEING STARTED, WITHOUT ANY HARD BRAKING. THE NEXT DAY THE CALIPER WAS REPLACED. TODAY, 9/28/2017, WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER CAR BEING STARTED TO DRIVE TO WORK, A SHIMMY DEVELOPED. WHEN I GOT TO WORK A FEW MILES LATER, THE CALIPER WAS LOCKED AGAIN AND WAS SMOKING. IN 1998, WHILE DRIVING MY FATHER'S 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE (NOT THE SAME ONE I NOW OWN), THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER LOCKED ONTO THE TIRE AND CAUSED A LOT OF SMOKE. I ASSUMED IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AT THE TIME. I UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS WILL GO WRONG WITH OLDER VEHICLES IN THE NORMAL COURSE OF BEING USED AND BECOMING WORN, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON POINT OF FAILURE ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND YEAR THAT STARTED HAPPENING WHEN THE VEHICLES WERE STILL RELATIVELY NEW. BRAKE PROBLEMS ARE AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS THING TO OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLES IN QUESTION, AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE, SO I FEEL THIS MERITS BEING REPORTED BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN STRONG AND RELIABLE, AND I STILL SEE SO MANY OF THEM OUT ON THE HIGHWAYS AND CITY STREETS. I CLICKED "NEXT" AND ONE OF THE QUESTIONS IS, "WAS THERE A FIRE?" I AM GOING TO CLICK YES BECAUSE THERE WAS A COPIOUS AMOUNT OF SMOKE BUT WANT TO CLARIFY HERE THAT THERE WERE NO FLAMES THAT I SAW.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 93 2 door 4 cyl. Despite having 223,000 miles on it, I was able to replace the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and fan, and now it's getting over 20 mpg! Even though it's a 2 door, it comfortably fits 4 people. As someone who works in 2 way communications, I've taken this Jeep to places I never thought it could go, and it runs amazingly well even in over 2 feet of snow. The only issue I've had is with the door hinges. Thanks for listening!
-
It's great to hear that you find the car reliable!
-
I really love my jeep! It has been such a reliable vehicle and has never left me stranded. While the fuel economy isn't great (15mpg in town, 20 on the highway), the power is more than enough for a vehicle this size. I'm not sure why the folks at Chrysler decided to discontinue the Cherokee, as it was a favorite among many. The Liberty just doesn't have the same tough look as the Cherokee and has too much plastic. Hopefully, they will realize their mistake soon. I'm already thinking about my next vehicle, and I'm considering a Grand Cherokee.
-
The 6 cyl automatic 4.0 engine is really impressive. It's reliable, dependable, and has good acceleration.
-
I bought my Jeep when it was 13 years old and had tons of miles on it already. I added many more miles which were fairly rough ones. I live where we get a lot of snow and never had any trouble with it (except when the snow hit 4 feet). It would go anywhere I wanted. I hauled hay and a horse trailed up steep hills and my husband hauled his large boat. It did great. We finally upgraded to a Liberty Turbo diesel, but I'm looking to go back to the Cherokee. You just can't beat the room in the back to haul stuff. I've had several Jeeps and the Cherokee is by far the best! Can't wait to buy another one.

I purchased the vehicle brand new, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with the right front wheel/tire since day one. It always seems to need air, and despite attempts to fix the problem with the rim, it still causes the vehicle to shake when driving over 55mph. Additionally, the stereo speakers do not sound great, and the cruise and air conditioning stopped working years ago. There was also a leak in the roof (caused by the roof rack) that went undetected for years, causing damage to the rocker and soaking the rugs. This eventually led to rusting out the entire roof over the front window and shorting out the electrical system. Lastly, the front bumper has rusted badly. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience, and I would not purchase this vehicle again.

Your trusty, rusting TANK has covered 170,000 miles and is still going strong with low maintenance. Although it started burning a little oil at about 140,000 miles, it has been very reliable. The only mystery was a failed crankshaft position sensor that caused much frustration (stalling) until diagnosed. It heats up quickly these days in the warmer weather. You had a 7/70,000 warranty, but rust started about 8/90,000. The CV joints were replaced to fix the squeaky sound. To avoid the 'Death Wobble' (look it up), keep the front suspension in check and tires in good repair. The interior is a little noisy and the backend can be a little light in slippery conditions, making it easy to overpower turns with the 4.0L. Overall, it's a great vehicle that has served you well.

I got mine used with 45K miles and unfortunately had to put a new transmission in at 50K. However, since then it has been great! With 150K miles, it still cranks right up. I have to drive it like a maniac in the Houston traffic, but it has held up well. The inline 6 has great acceleration and its size allows for easy maneuverability. Additionally, I have taken 10 or so trips from east Texas to middle Georgia over the past seven years and have never had a problem.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your Jeep in Southern California traffic. It's fast off the line, shifts smoothly, and handles tight situations with ease. Plus, its compact size makes turning into tight spots and parking a breeze. While you've had a few repairs over the years, it's great to hear that reliability has been average. With its excellent power (that 4.0 six is an outstanding engine!) and ease of driving, it's no wonder you've been a Jeep owner for 14 years. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Noisy, bouncy and fun to drive. The inline six is an excellent engine and mine leaks no oil at 170,000 miles. It appears to have been partially overhauled around 70,000 miles. Although repairs can be costly, the car is worth it. I have replaced tire rods, clutch, brake work, and the cat converter, but the quality of the parts is worth the expense. Labor costs are higher due to the car's unique design. The only downside I have found are the windshield wiper motors, which could be improved.
