The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 2021 Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee 2021 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.

Another common problem with the 2021 Jeep Cherokee is related to the transmission. The vehicle's ZF 9-speed automatic transmission has been criticized for its poor performance, including stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure. These issues have been reported as early as 70,000 miles, and while the manufacturer claims they are caused by a software glitch, multiple software updates have not fully resolved the problems for most Cherokee owners.

In addition to transmission issues, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee has also faced complaints about its backup sensor alarm, which has been reported to beep unexpectedly and continue until the engine is turned off for a while. This issue is not exclusive to the Cherokee, as other Jeep models have experienced similar problems with their backup sensor alarm.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's engine has also been reported to have issues, with owners experiencing faulty start/stop systems that can shut off completely at stoplights, potentially causing rear-end collisions. Some drivers have also reported transmission slipping and difficulty starting the vehicle when the ignition is in the start position.

These common problems with the 2021 Jeep Cherokee have led to frustration and dissatisfaction among some owners, with some reporting multiple visits to dealerships for repairs and even considering lemon law options. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-07
  • VIN: 1C4PJMMX0MD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I've been experiencing repeated instances of my 2021 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Lux 4X4 shutting off while I'm driving, without any warning lights. The message "Shift to P to start" appears on the screen. On several occasions, the car shut off unexpectedly, almost causing accidents. Despite multiple visits to the IG Burton service department, no fault codes were found. Chrysler told them to replace the crank sensor. They were very confident that was the problem, but the issue recurred again 13days after I got the vehicle back. They replaced my fuel pump this time but still have no evidence to prove that is the issue. They continue to guess at parts and I have to be the guinea pig to see if they got it right. This has been its 4th time in the shop and well over 10 time has this vehicle shut off on the highway. I believe jeep should step in at this point and find the cause of this problem or label the vehicle defective if they cannot. This ongoing issue has caused me frustration, anxiety, and safety concerns. I feel unsafe driving the vehicle. Especially after being told the last time they "felt confident" only for me to be stuck waiting for a tow truck in the road a few days later. The uncertainty surrounding the problem and the recurring nature of the incidents have greatly undermined my confidence in the vehicle's reliability and safety. I also have a detailed report of every time the vehicle has shut off/ been to the service department but I can't get it to attach on this site.

Negative 2021 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Stanley Johns 2024-11-29

I have owned my Jeep for only two years, and yet I have already had to replace the battery on 8/15/2023. Unfortunately, the battery is already draining again as of 9/25/2023. Despite being a brand new car at the time of purchase, this issue is clearly a cause for concern.

  2. Kody Dach 2024-02-08

I recently had to rent a vehicle and unfortunately was given this particular one to drive. As someone who has owned and driven many different types of cars and trucks, including three Jeeps, I found this one to be quite a pain. One of the features I disliked was the start-stop push button, which seems to be a common feature in most new cars nowadays. Additionally, the engine cuts to low gear when stopped at a light, which affects the AC and can be quite annoying. Another issue I had was with the front window, which is practically useless when driving in the dark. The condensation is terrible and cannot be remedied unless you constantly use the windshield wipers. It doesn't matter if the AC is on, the heat is blowing, or if the front windshield defrost is on or off. Be prepared to run your wipers and constantly hit the wiper fluid to keep the windshield clear enough to drive. It's obviously a design flaw because the right side is even worse than the left! Seeing out the windshield is kind of important, don't you think?

Positive 2021 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Wilfrid Boehm 2024-11-23

You'll enjoy a comfortable ride with this vehicle. While there is some road noise, the climate controls are easy to use and trouble-free. The gas mileage is quite good, and the sound system is quite pleasant and easy to adjust. Although there is no CD player, I use a portable CD player and it works great.

  2. Cordelia Hand 2024-11-01

I'm really glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase!

  3. Rudolph Veum 2024-09-16

You'll love the spaciousness of this vehicle, and it gets great gas mileage too!

  4. Jaylon Lind 2024-09-09

I'm so glad to hear that you love the features and color! It sounds like it will be a great addition for your family.

  5. Floy Schinner 2024-09-08

I purchased this vehicle brand new in January 2021 and have driven it for 45000 kilometers up to May 2023. I am happy to report that I have not encountered any issues with the car, except for two cabin filter replacements during servicing. As a dog owner, I appreciate the need for regular oil changes using synthetic oil, which I have done at the dealership every 8000 kilometers. Living in Northern Ontario, I can attest to the Jeep's excellent handling in deep snow and on ice, especially with winter Blizzaks on it. The car has always started without any problems, even in -35c weather, and the heated seats and steering wheel, along with the great heater, make for a comfortable ride. Overall, I highly recommend the Jeep with its 6-cylinder engine and good gas mileage. Cheers!
