The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common Hyundai Tucson problems

The Hyundai Tucson has been a popular compact SUV due to its stylish design, upscale cabin, safety features, and efficient hybrid options:

  • Airbag control module defect: The second most frequently reported Hyundai Tucson problem is a defect in the airbag control module, which increases the risk of the passenger-side airbag incorrectly deploying during a collision. The defect has led to recalls for eight Tucson model years: 2005 through 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The airbag control module must be replaced to address the problem, but the cost should be covered by Hyundai at an authorized dealership.
  • No sound from the speakers: The third most common Hyundai Tucson problem is speakers in some SUVs with a multimedia navigation system suddenly stopping to emit sound. The problem occurs whether it's when using the radio, CD player, navigation system, or other sources. Over 50 owners of nine model years from 2009 to 2017 have reported the problem to RepairPal. Fortunately, the no-sound issue is easy to fix and typically doesn't require a service center visit. The cause of the problem is a software glitch, which can be resolved with a hard reset. To do the hard reset, disconnect the negative battery terminal in the SUV. Wait about 15 minutes and then reconnect the terminal. After that, the sound should return.

While these issues don't affect most Tucson models, they are the most frequently reported problems across all model years. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and perform thorough inspections during a test drive to ensure a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

When shopping for a used Hyundai Tucson, the third generation is likely to provide the best quality. These vehicles, from the 2016-2021 model years, were seen as a big leap forward for the Tucson name. A brand new engine, design overhaul, and access to more modern technologies transformed the vehicle.

What are the disadvantages of the Hyundai Tucson?

Tucson Disadvantanges

The 2.0L normal petrol engine of the Tucson lacks the power and torque output one would expect from an SUV from this segment. Furthermore, the fluid coupling torque converter transmission further reduces its fuel efficiency, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic driving.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: KM8JFCA17PU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While traveling out of town, our 2023 Tuscon HEV with 31,000k started chugging/hesitating during acceleration. This chugging continued to worsen, so we took it to a Hyundai dealership to diagnose. We were told that fuel injector #3 was misfiring, and, as they did not have the parts in stock, that it would be safe to make the 5 hour drive back home to service the vehicle. During the first 4 hours of the drive the chugging/hesitating worsened, several times suddenly losing power and speed dropping from 70 or so mpg, to 40 mpg and lower, creating extremely harrowing and dangerous conditions from the higher speed drivers behind and around us on the highway. During the last hour of the drive, the vehicle started making a screeching sound, and emitting a burning smell, and chugging so convulsively that we made an emergency detour to drop it at the closest Hyundai dealership. The second dealership said that they could not use the 1st dealerships diagnosis, and that they would need to do their own assessment. Almost 2 weeks later, we were informed that the vehicle was fixed and that issue was a cracked tensioner belt and that likely is what set off the other code(s), including the fuel injector code. Upon picking up the vehicle we discovered that the same chugging issue was still occurring and returned it to dealership #2. They ran another diagnostic and determined that fuel injector #3 needed to be replaced-the issue that dealership #1 originally diagnosed. We were also told that, the problem is with the outsourced company that makes the fuel injectors, and that this is a recurring issue with the other injectors. Unfortunately, Hyundai has yet to take responsibility and save its customers a lot of inconvenience and safety concerns, by allowing dealerships to go ahead and replace all of the fuel injectors at once when the 1st one goes bad.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5NMJECAE5NH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Here we go again. Last time the #3 fuel injector failed while driving on the freeway. Car started shaking and lost acceleration with "check engine" warning light on. Two months later, #2 fuel injector failed while driving on the street with same symptoms as last time. Fortunately, both incidents did not cause any accident but was terrifying. I requested the Hyundai service dealer replace the remaining fuel injectors and again, was informed that Hyundai will only authorize them to replace a defective injector when it's failed. I do not understand Hyundai's logical thinking. Hyundai is fully aware of this issue and have already sent out TSBs. Are they waiting for someone to be in an accident and have major bodily injury caused by defective fuel injectors before taking this matter seriously? I will also address this matter to Hyundai Corporation for a response.
Hyundai Tucson 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: KM8JU3AG3FU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: --->While I was driving my hyundai tucson engine seized (-engine model (lm) 2.4l theta ii--> 63,664 miles). Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection. ---> As I said before I was driving in a express way when the incident happened. My car just stopped working out of a sudden and I had to take the side road by applying a much force effort from myself not to get hit by several vehicles behind. When I finally managed to step aside, I sensed some sort of smoke smell. And also all warning lights from car dashboard came up with no prior lamp alerts before this incident. ---> I took the vehicle to the nearest repair shop called Sam's certified auto repair. And there it was diagnosed that the vehicle engine was seized. So i inmediately called the dealer and the asked me to tow my SUV. There they diagnosed the vehicle with a seized engine too. From there on I found out that these vehicle i bought have a recall and that the this engine model has a major malfunctioning manufacture issues. Then I tried to get an authorization approval for a new engine but it was denied because they stated that I have a savage title.
Hyundai Tucson 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5NMJECAE3NH
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Trailing arm bushings on both sides appear to generate considerable noise indicating wear (has been since delivery but getting much worse over this year). Dealer's solution was to simply lubricate them. The owner manual says nothing of this, and I think this is a simple "go away" band-aid solution. Attempted to reach Hyundai corporate, who asked me to confirm with the dealer if that is proper. That seems like a question for engineering, not the dealer who applied the band-aid fix. It is apparent that the bushings they affixed to the vehicle are defective and could possibly cause larger issues down the line -- far enough down the road when Hyundai can claim they are a wear item and need to be replaced.

  • Summary: Check engine light and error message popped up on screen "A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected. Contacted BlueLink and they could not help because dealerships were already closed.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: KM8J3CA47GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: There two incidents where I was driving in the highway and my car died mid driving. It put my life on risk twice. Took it to the mechanic and was told that my car was leaking oil and caused my car to have an engine misfire. My car is un drivable. There were no engine or oil lights that appeared prior to the incident and I always got my regular oil changes and had put in more oil myself. Hyundai refused to pay to the engine replacement even through this is a known issue. I’ve only had the car for two years and it’s under 100k miles.
Hyundai Tucson 2024
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 5NMJB3DEXRH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving in light traffic, speed at 45 mph, my Tucson alerted me with a beep, steering wheel vibrated and a red alert on the dash was present for about 3 seconds then the speed automatically slows down to 15 mph all on its own while my foot is still on the accelerator. This has occurred at a minimum 6 times. I purchased this vehicle brand new and driving it off the lot it had 22 miles on it. I've taken it to a Hyundai dealership, and they can't figure out what it wrong with it. I feel very unsafe and unhappy now of this major safety concern. This has high probability of getting rear ended. I see that this has been occurring with various years of Hyundai and am wondering why there has not been a recall on this issue. I owned a Hyundai prior to this 2024 (Tucson 2011) and it was wonderful. This is highly concerning for me, and I am not confidant driving this vehicle and will more than likely trade it in for another vehicle. Can someone please research this issue with the automatic emergency brake system. This can autonomously go off whether you are in traffic, highway, street or completely zero vehicles or pedestrians around.
Hyundai Tucson 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22

  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the floorboard was vibrating, and the vehicle was losing motive power. The contact was depressing the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle was not responding as needed. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring for several years. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The contact stated that the dealer diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the engine control software needed to be updated. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The most recent failure the contact was able to drive to the same dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,211.

Issue came back, this time disconnecting battery did not fix issue. Dealer currently has the vehicle and they are claiming it shows rear end damage even though the car hasn’t been in an accident since I was rear ended and car was repaired. Dealer reported over 80 body codes including blind spot monitoring radar.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KM8JFCAE9NU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle has experienced, unexpected, slight and brief, acceleration 3 times at highway speeds up to 60 mph. The 4th incident was an uncontrolled acceleration when parking behind another parked vehicle. Car accelerated into the backend of parked vehicle. Operator was at a complete stop and needed to pull forward a few feet. They took foot off of brake and lightly pressed the gas peddle. The car unexpectedly surged forward hitting parked car. 1 day later we received an email from Hyundai Blue Link stating that "a possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected" and recommends bringing in for service for a full system check. Both cars were damaged and Tuscon had to be towed to a repair shop.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • VIN: 5NMJE3DE9RH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Two incidents while driving on the highway. 1. Emergency braking activated on its own. No cars around me. It was a rural area. The red emergency braking activated light showed up and my car braked but resumed driving. This is a new car with less than 4k miles on it. 2. The hands free assist and cruise control were activated. My care swerved to the right abruptly. My hands were on the wheel and I was able to correct this but this is very concerning as my daughter drives this car on mountain roads when she is going to college. I have read online reports when others driving the same make, model and year vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • VIN: KM8JT3AF4EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On August 17th 2024 my 2014 Hyundai Tucson wouldn't start. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership so that they can figure out why my vehicle wasn't working. I just leased the vehicle in March 2024. The dealership told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and they didn't handle engine work and it needed to be towed to an Hyundai dealership. I contacted the Hyundai dealership and they told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and that it would be serviced on October 17th 2024 at 11 am and hopefully done by 6 pm that day. I was and still am blown away that I have to be without my vehicle for 2 months. Fast forward to October 17th 2024 I'm excited about finally getting my vehicle back as this recall has caused me so much stress and a Major Inconvenience on my life. I contact Hyundai and am told the appointment is for a vehicle diagnostic and they don't have the engine it has to be ordered and then make an appointment to install. I also was told there were 2 other recalls on the vehicle that would be covered under the warranty or recall but the engine would not be covered under the warranty or recall because my name is listed under the dealership name on the title so my vehicle is currently still sitting at Hyundai with no answers from either party about me getting my vehicle fixed and back on the road

  • Summary: I was traveling in Texas with my child on the highway going 65 when my vehicle went into limp mode and immediately started making a noise like a card in a bicycle tire and would not accelerate. After a few seconds the check engine light came on blinking. I managed to make it to an exit and pull into a gas station. I called a tow company and had to wait more than an hour in the heat with my [XXX] for them to reach me. I called the closest dealer which was aslo an hour away and made sure they were aware the vehicle was coming. A family member drove two hours to get us. A service tech texted me that night and told me the car was awaiting a tech. First thing Monday I received another text that a new engine replacement had been approved. It actually took several phone calls and trying to reach anyone to actually find out that the car had code p1326 and had failed the rod bearing test. And I read more about the gdi theta II settlement and reached out to customer care and opened a ticket to be reimbursed for towing. The vehicle had a previous recall completed for the knock sensor. No rental cars were available to me AT ALL. I received a remanufactured short block all said and done in 10 days. My family was left with no car for that time. There were no warning signs on my car-no excessive oil consumption, no other lights or noises. terrified it will occur with the replacement. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned your 2024 Tucson SEL Conv hybrid only gets around 31mpg, even though the window sticker shows 37mpg. That must be frustrating! Have you tried any tips or tricks to improve your fuel efficiency? I'm sure there are some things you can do to get closer to that 37mpg mark. Best of luck!

Let me start by saying that I got my car from the Hyundai dealership in Tyler, TX in September 2017, even though I live in Canyon Lake, TX (4.5hrs away) and work in Boerne, TX (an hour away from home). Unfortunately, the engine seized and the closest Autonation was in Austin. However, Southpoint Hyundai in Austin did their best to take care of me and even put me in a rental. Although the engine replacement took 49 days and cost approximately $10,650, I'm grateful that the extended warranty covered it. The rental cost was $1595, but at least I didn't have to pay for it. About 2 days later, I noticed that it was leaking oil, so I went back to Austin. While they had my car, the new engine started knocking, and they had to order another one from the factory. This was the third engine that had been in my vehicle! However, the extended warranty department covered all the costs, and I was put into another rental. Although I had to switch to a loaner midway, I got my car back in September 2018, and everything seemed to be fixed. In October 2018, my partner and I drove to Phoenix, AZ for our anniversary, and we thought everything was fine until we were driving back. My husband and I were driving down I-10 with the vehicle on cruise control when suddenly the car made a noise and the rpm's revved up to 5500! My husband quickly tapped the brake pedal to disengage the cruise control, but as soon as he barely put his foot back on the accelerator, it revved back up to 5500 rpm again! We were 300 miles from home and unfortunately in a dead cell service zone, about 60 miles outside of Ft. Stockton, TX. We were stranded, but luckily we found a small town called Iraan, TX where we stayed the night. The next morning, we were towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership in Odessa, TX, which was 90 miles away. Lithia Hyundai of Odessa was amazing and they were able to get us into our second loaner within an hour! We were just trying to get home at this point and they made the process so much easier. They replaced the transmission, which was fried, and informed us that there was no way we could've known what the problem was since there is no dipstick and no check engine light that came on. We picked up the vehicle on January 5, 2019, and it was running smoothly. However, just 5 days later, on January 10, 2019, my vehicle is back in the shop! When we returned from Odessa, we got the oil changed and an inspection. The service techs informed us that the skid plate was missing about 10 bolts/clips, and it was cracked, and just barely hanging on. It had been rubbing against my tire, and ripped almost the whole wheel well off. Odessa said to take it to the closest Hyundai dealership to us, which is 30 mins away, in New Braunfels, TX, and they would pay to fix or repair it. During the oil change, they found sludge in the engine and in the oil filter! It's frustrating to have these issues with a brand new engine, but we're grateful for the help we've received from Lithia Hyundai of Odessa and the other dealerships. How are you doing? Today, January 10, 2019, my husband took our car to the dealership in NB to get the skid plate issue looked at. Unfortunately, there are multiple oil leaks and a coolant leak. It's frustrating, but we're hopeful that the dealership will be able to determine where the leaks are coming from. We've also reached out to the Hyundai National Consumer Affairs person for assistance. The loaner that Odessa provided us, a 2017 Santa Fe Sport Ultimate, was great despite the issues we've had with our Tucson. The service manager at Odessa informed us that our make and model has had some issues, which explains a lot. We're hoping to get a different Hyundai as a replacement, but we just don't want this one back. We don't trust it anymore and we're worried about getting stranded again. Hopefully, we'll be in something else soon!

I purchased this vehicle 10 months ago and am considering trading it in, despite the fact that I know I will take a loss. While it has plenty of cargo space and legroom, I have noticed that the motor works too hard and it doesn't feel like it shifts properly. Additionally, it takes a long time to accelerate and I have consistently gotten 18 miles per gallon or less, never even reaching the stated 19 miles per gallon. The 14-gallon tank is small, which means I feel like I am always at the gas station. On the bright side, the radio and amenities are positioned well for a comfortable ride, and the heat and A/C are great, although the speakers could be stronger and it can be difficult to hear the radio over the sound of the air conditioning.

I have experienced some quality issues with this vehicle, such as paint chipping too easily, performance issues, and electronic glitches. Additionally, I encountered some service issues, including receiving the car back with rear bumper damage during a recent visit. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and that this vehicle will maintain its value even after two or three years of use.

Hi there! Two years ago, we bought our car with 45,000 miles. Last weekend, while driving on the highway, we heard a noise that sounded like a fan blade rotating. The noise seemed to get louder with acceleration, but no indicator lights came on. We decided to get it home and call the mechanic in the morning to have it looked at. Unfortunately, as soon as we exited the highway and came to a stop, the noise changed to a very loud banging noise. Still no indicator lights. We started to turn onto our road, as we were only a few blocks away from home, but we had almost no acceleration. The mechanic said it was a knock in the lower end of the motor and the motor needs to be replaced. The dealership can't even look at it for almost a month to decide if the warranty will cover it. They don't do loaner cars anymore, so if they approve the warranty claim, then another department can try to help us get a rental covered. We had no indications there was a problem until it was catastrophic, and from many claims, it seems like Hyundai is well aware of the problem but does everything they can to deny the warranty coverage they brag so much about. In any case, we wanted to share our experience with you. Take care and have a great day!

I'm really enjoying my Tuscon! I recently bought the 2011 Limited 2WD with 50,000 miles and traded in my 2008 Durango. I'm still getting used to it, but the gas mileage is fantastic compared to what I'm used to. I never used the 3rd row seating in my Durango, so the Tuscon's cargo room is just enough for my two kids. The front and back seats have pretty much the same room I was working with before. Surprisingly, I have more room in the driver's seat than I did in my Durango and I'm more comfortable. The ride is pretty smooth, what you would expect from a crossover. I'm really impressed with the Bluetooth, navigation, and iPod control - no complaints there at all. The dash is pleasing to the eye and everything is designed rather well and reachable from the driver's seat. I'm 5'11

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story with you about our car. We purchased it back in September and my wife has been using it to commute to work, which is about a 50-mile round trip. Unfortunately, last weekend she hit a patch of ice and ended up in a field, hitting a telephone pole. Thankfully, her only injury was to her hand from the airbag. The cop and insurance adjuster were amazed that she wasn't more seriously hurt, and they both said that the car likely saved her. Unfortunately, it looks like the car is going to be totaled, but we're definitely planning on getting another one. Take care!

The Hyundai Tucson Limited offers every feature you could ever want in a car, and they do it at under 40k. In my opinion, it's one of the best SUVs for the money on the market today. It drives smoothly, the seats are very comfortable, and the safety features are amazing. Although it's somewhat sluggish, it's not as bad in sport mode. In normal mode, it takes a second to accelerate, which can make pulling out into traffic and passing cars a bit more difficult than some other SUVs in its class. I started my car search with 8 cars on my list, and I got pricing on and test drove all eight over 3 months. As I said, the Tucson Limited was superior to all of them in every way, with the exception of acceleration. Getting the Tucson was an easy decision, and I'm very happy I made it.

We recently purchased a Hybrid Limited and have driven it for 1000 miles. During our search for a new vehicle, we considered several options such as the CRV, RDX, Q3/Q5, RAV4, Outback, CX5, and Forrester. However, the Hybrid quickly became our top choice due to its impressive performance. If you tend to drive at speeds above 75 mph on freeways, this vehicle may not be the best fit for you as it can affect the MPG. Currently, we are getting 35 MPG with a mix of suburban and freeway driving. Initially, we were hesitant to purchase the vehicle due to the touch controls, but we found that it was not a big issue. The tech features are strong, and the voice control is excellent. Although the Bose Audio system is not the best, the vehicle is very quiet at speeds below 70 mph. The driving assistance (HDA, etc.) is exceptional and surpasses most other systems in the other vehicles we tested. Overall, we are very pleased with this vehicle and hope it is as reliable as our 2008 CRV EXL that has been passed down to our two kids. The chassis is solid, and the acceleration and smoothness exude quality. The thoughtful design shows that the manufacturer is committed to being a strong competitor in this segment. In conclusion, we highly recommend considering this vehicle unless you frequently drive at high speeds on the freeway.
