Common 2018 Hyundai Tucson problems
The 2018 Hyundai Tucson has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems.
Engine failures are a significant concern for 2018 Hyundai Tucson owners. These failures typically occur around 70,000 miles and are caused by engine oil delivery issues, which lead to damage to the pistons, rods, and valvetrain.
Transmission issues have also been reported, with some 2018 Tucson models experiencing problems with acceleration at around 15,000 miles. Software updates are available to address some transmission issues, but in some cases, the entire torque converter may need to be replaced, which can cost around $4,000.
Electrical problems, such as the vehicle shutting down while driving, have also been reported. This issue is caused by loose battery grounds, which can be replaced for around $300, but there may be other mechanical issues causing the Tucson to shut off.
The 2018 Hyundai Tucson has one serious recall related to the ABS control unit, which may cause an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked. Hyundai will replace the entire hydraulic electronic control unit for free on affected models.
In addition to these issues, the 2018 Hyundai Tucson may require expensive repairs to the alternator, HVAC air door actuator, and EGR valve as it ages, with repair costs totaling around $16,300 to $20,075.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- VIN: KM8J33A22JU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: A few months back my car started to loose its ability to accelerate on the highway. I stopped to get my oil changed to see if that would help but the acceleration was still very limited. Now a month ago, my car started pouring smoke out of the exhaust. It was brought to a mechanic who said it was a turbo and or engine issue. I took it to a Hyundai near me for a clear diagnoses and they diagnosed it as needing a new turbo. I got a new turbo put into the car. My car worked for 1 day before pouring oil out of the bottom of it. I then had a new turbo put in. My car worked well for 1 week but now is leaking oil from the exhaust and making loud knocking, go kart noises. Most people I have talked to say it's the engine and that these problems are way too common in Hyundais well before 100k miles. My car has also been peeling white paint from the hood of my car for 2 years. I have passed hundreds of white hyundai's with the same paint problem.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
- VIN: KM8J3CA2XJU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We were consuming about a quart of oil every week and a half. I drive over 60 miles a day. We added oil until we could check it out. First dealership said that no visible exterior leaks so they told us to take to Hyundai. Once at Hyundai we were told compression was down and we needed a new engine, Catalytic converter, and turbo. Our extended warranty only approved a short block. Said we have sludge and we have to cover the rest of the parts that have sludge but we proved our oil changes and used synthetic oil. They will not give us proof of anything. Hyundai is known for this and won’t cover anything. Hyuandai Beaverton and Ethos is being horrible.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: KM8J23A49JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: my mechanic and I noticed that motor oil engine is running out too fast that is normal. I take my suv to do oil change every 5,000 miles, I can't even wait the 5,000 miles because the oil level is low, he double check for any dripping of oil. my mechanic told me that it is not safe drive the car in low level of oil because it can cause a fire in the engine. I went to the hyundai dealer to explian them the problem and they told me there is nothing they can do to fix the issue because my manufacture guarantee is over, I don't feel safe to dive my car in that condition so thats why I'm here making this request to hopefully you guys can help me. the most important thing is the safe of my family.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- VIN: KM8J33A4XJU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On 10/5, after exiting the highway, check engine light began blinking. A loud cranking noise was present and the car began “puttering.” I immediately pulled over to find a parking spot. As I parked, the car seemed to stop running and the oil light turned on. I called a tow truck but since this occurred on the weekend, the dealer wasn’t open. Local mechanic stated it was the engine. I had it towed to Hyundai and it’s awaiting diagnosis.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- VIN: KM8J3CA25JU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When accelerating from a stop (particularly when taking a left turn across traffic, and uphill), the car often will hesitate and near-stall. It does not respond to driver “punching” the accelerator even to the floor, the car won’t respond, then suddenly catches and lurches forward. This problem has occurred since the purchase time in 2020 as a certified used vehicle from a Tucson dealer. I have reported the issue multiple times and ask the dealer frequently about it. They tell me no issue, never heard of it, no recall or repair. Online I see many people have reported this as a problem. It is definitely unsafe as drivers evaluate distance of oncoming cars in taking a left turn. When the car hesitates and doesn’t engage, time is lost to make the turn in time to make it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05

Took SUV to mechanic shop in July 2024, and they informed of a r&r knock senor needing to be replace. A couple days after this had to go back as check engine light was back on. they informed of needing to replace a wire harness. After this no longer able to drive car as not sure what will happen next.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KM8J33A42JU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: In May 2024 my Hyundai Tucson died in a middle of an intersection with no warning. Worse than that is Hyundai motor USA informed me that the car was on a recall list for an engine failure issue that was apart of class action suit . Ans further told me that that were obligated to have the highway transportation safety dept notified first consider cause of the issue. They told an inspector from your department was required to inspect vehicle before repairs could be started and or returned fo me. That has not happened and they are using your office as the reason for delay on my vehicle. They have systematically m supplied the same answer to my case with no resolution. I have done everything I can as a consumer to handle my case and believed that they were going through the correct process but the dealer has informed me their own manufacturer and corporate is not following guidelines and handling recalls. This is soo dangerous as this vehicle was Already on a list for recall repair and they did NOT inform me the customer when it was brought in for repairs before this incident.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
- VIN: KM8J33A29JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was traveling on the freeway at Highway speed, heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine that got progressively worse. No warning lights, began to loose power as I exited the freeway. Had vehicle towed to dealership, they were able to replicate knocking noise coming from bottom end of engine. Diagnosed as catastrophic engine failure and needs engine replacement, outside of standard warranty. Engine is a 1.6L GDI and model was not included in recall for KSDS sensor. Safety was compromised due to engine failure at high speed with no warning or previous engine problem. Vehicle is available for inspection as of current date

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-30
- VIN: KM8J33A24JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Car had been burning oil very quickly. I took it for an oil change, before it was due, and they said it was very low. They changed it, and I was leaving to visit my parents in Florida the next day. I checked the oil when getting there, and it was good, and I also checked it prior to heading back home, and it was still good. I was in a really bad/unsafe area at 10pm, on my way home from visiting my parents, and my car began to stall. Engine light came on. It would stall really bad when going slow, and almost died a couple times at lights when stopped, but we made it home. We got it to a mechanic, and they stated it was the engine, and it needed to be taken to the dealership. I have read that Hyundai/Kia are notorious for engine issues. My car was towed to the dealership, and they supposedly requested to see if Hyundai would cover for a replacement engine. My car is unfortunately 10,000 over the warranty mileage (100,000), but 110,000 is still not enough to be already having engine problems. Supposedly, according to the dealership, Hyundai declined, and the quote for a new engine is $7,693, which I cannot afford, especially on top of my car payment, which I still owe a good chunk on.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01

There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent, who stated there was no engine light illuminated, but the mechanic replaced the coils, oil, and spark plugs. The contact called the local dealer and left a message. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- VIN: KM8J3CA24JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My engine failed while driving on a highway. The engine began ticking, and then completely failed. The tow truck driver reported oil leakage. I towed it to a mechanic and he said it was completely blown and irreparable. He reported this as a recurring problem with hyundai and kia cars that "eat up oil" and then damage the engine. The oil light has not been on, I've gotten regular oil changes and was within the distance of my most recent oil change. But apparently it was leaking, failed to inform me and now I have to purchase a new car or pay for a new engine. I looked up recalls, there are none. I looked up class action settlements and my car was mysteriously not on the list based on the VIN, despite being listed within the model and year range.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
- VIN: KM8J3CA41JU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: End of April/beginning of may, driving down highway check engine light flashing loud knocking and loss of power. Got it towed by AAA. Wasnt able to make appt until May 9th. Got it towed to the Hyundai dealership. Got phone call that is filed the bearing test and need a total engine replacement. Was told by the dealership that it could take 3 months or more to get an engine in and get it replaced. They have no loaners, and hyundai expeacts me to pay out of pocket for a rental for work to keep my job as well as my independent contracting job accounting/taxes. I have to have a vehicle. A rental is easily 1200+ a month. Hyundai refuses to give me a trade in value for my vehicle until the new engine is in. Hyundai also refunded to reimbursement me for a rental until all work is completed and a work order is in hand ( which can be many many months) I dont have money to pay 1200+ a month for a rental and also pay by car payment every month for a vehicle that is stuck at the dealership undrivable because Hyundai installed faulty bad engines. I am stuck and all Hyundai can tell me is that it takes months for the engines. Purchased the vehicle in Feb 2022 and have perfect maintance records, service records and everything else for upkeep. Still owe 15545 on the vehicle and its undrivable. So im paying a car payment on a vehicle that Hyundai made undrivable
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-04
- VIN: KM8J2CA48JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: KSDS engine software update was performed by Hyundai dealer on January 22, 2024. On or about February 11, 2024, the vehicle began stalling, intermittently, and would not restart for several minutes. On March 4, 2024, the vehicle stalled and, upon restarting, after nearly a 30 minute wait, it would not exceed 35 mph. The vehicle registered, nor recorded, any diagnostic codes at any time, during these events. The vehicle was taken to Edwards Hyundai service center for diagnosis and repair. No diagnostic codes were recorded in the vehicle history. Upon inspection, Edwards changed a loose timing chain and exhaust camshaft. The vehicle was picked up on 3/13/2024 and presented with the same issue on 3/14/2024, with the engine stalling and failing to restart for several minutes. When the vehicle did restart, it would not exceed 35 mph. It was then returned to Edwards Hyundai on 3/15/2024, where it duplicated the issue for Service Writers, failed to restart, and had to be pushed out of the service garage. The vehicle has since, without further diagnosis or repair, started and ran for technicians, who have since supposedly driven, approximately, 200 miles, in an effort to determine the issue. Edwards Hyundai then demanded the return of a loaner vehicle, in an effort to force us to retake possession of the vehicle, having failed to properly diagnose or repair the issue. A complaint has been filed with Hyundai corporate, which resulted only in them also trying to convince us to accept return of the vehicle in said state of disrepair. It has since become very clear, as evidenced by numerous reports of Hyundai vehicles experiencing the same effects and mechanical issues, after receiving the KSDS software update, that Hyundai, both at the corporate and service level, have been dishonest, as to being unaware of the cause of the issue and what must be done to resolve it. Given that the potential end result of the customer retaking possession of the vehicle in its

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
- VIN: KM8J2CA43JU
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle had been in the shop for 30 day due to engine shutdown in the middle of the road, I barely was able to get vehicle off the road and avoid oncoming traffic. I got my vehicle back and driven it a total of 40 minutes within a 3 day time period. During my drive to work my vehicle shut off in the middle of the highway and would not turn on again. My concerns are not being taken seriously with Hyundai and it is a disaster waiting to happen. I have a one year old daughter and I can not risk her safety as well as the other on-coming people on the road when it quits and oncoming traffic has to swerve to not T-bone me. Hyundai will not take any action to correct this other than giving it a temporary fix of a 45 minute drive before they allow me to get back on the road and put myself and others at risk of injury.

I'm so happy to hear that you're enjoying your 2018 Tucson AWD limited (ultimate) with the 1.6 Turbo! It's a shame that Hyundai discontinued the turbo for 2019, but it's great to hear that you're finding the SUV to be quick and fuel-efficient. It's also wonderful to hear that you're proud to own a Turbo version, which will likely hold its value well. Overall, it sounds like you would definitely purchase the vehicle again without hesitation. I'm glad to hear that you haven't experienced any issues with hesitation or shifting, and I agree that more USB ports would be a nice addition. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Good multi purpose vehicle. Summer or winter, it's a great compact sport utility car.
-
This is my first time buying a Hyundai, and I must say I am pleasantly surprised by the quality, smooth ride, options, and technology. Even their warranty terms are absolutely amazing. So far, the car has had no issues.
-
After test driving many SUVs, I believe that the Tucson is a serious contender. It looks great both inside and out, and the engine was quiet with fine acceleration. I tested a Sonata the same day and honestly felt like the Tucson moved better than the Sonata, despite being slower on paper. The safety features were nice, and it's a feature-rich SUV. Although the rear seat space was more cramped than the other SUVs I've tested, the rear cargo area was nice and spacious. If you're in the market for a compact SUV, the Tucson should definitely be on your radar. Take it for a spin and see what you think. Thank you for considering the Tucson!

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying your car! It sounds like the folding passenger seats are very convenient for you, especially when it comes to loading larger items. The interior setup also seems to provide a lot of comfort. It sounds like this SUV would be a great choice for families!

Although there are some areas for improvement, the car may not be the best fit for families with children. The windshield may require extra care to avoid scratches and chips, and the interior seats and plastic may also be prone to staining and scratching. Additionally, the tires may not meet everyone's expectations. The car's design may not be the most spacious, especially for families with children and car seats. However, it is important to note that the car may still be a good option for those who prioritize other features. Thank you for considering this information.

This SUV boasts impressive power and a comfortable driving experience. However, the stereo system is of low quality and takes a while to warm up in cold weather. Additionally, there is a cracking sound that can be heard from the rear on occasion. While this is my fifth Hyundai vehicle, I am disappointed with the warranty and will not be purchasing another one.

I purchased my 2018 Hyundai Tucson in 2020 with around 40k miles on it. At the time, I found many positive reviews due to the low mileage of these model years. However, a few weeks ago while driving on the highway, the check engine light came on and the vehicle wouldn't go over 40mph. Unfortunately, the car eventually died on the side of the road. Despite regularly changing my oil every 3k miles, I discovered that the engine had no oil left and had blown. It's worth noting that my Hyundai only had 95k miles on it. After doing some research, I found out about the class action lawsuit that has forced Hyundai to fix millions of these engines due to excessive oil consumption and connective rod bearing failure. Thankfully, my engine is being fixed under recall, but I feel for those who didn't receive the specific knock sensor recall before their engine blew. While I would advise caution when considering a Hyundai or Kia, I hope that the company will continue to improve their engines and provide better support for their customers.

This car has been experiencing some issues with power loss and starting up, which can be a safety concern. Despite having replaced the car fob batteries and having taken it to the dealer, the issue persists. It is important to address these issues promptly to ensure safe driving conditions. We recommend seeking further assistance from a qualified mechanic to resolve these issues.

The Hyundai Tucson 2018 model that I purchased in May of the same year has not met my expectations in terms of driving experience. Although it has a decent ride and a nice panoramic sunroof, the reverse camera is of extremely low quality, making it practically unusable at night and blurry at best during the day. Additionally, the Android Auto keeps disconnecting from my phone, and the climate control is not very consistent. Furthermore, the 1.6 Turbo model is much harder on gas than I expected. As a result, the chances of me purchasing another Hyundai are next to nil.
