The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2009 Hyundai Tucson problems

The Hyundai Tucson 2009 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, airbag control module, and speakers.

  • Airbag Control Module Defect: Another common problem with the Hyundai Tucson 2009 is a defect in the airbag control module, which increases the risk of the passenger-side airbag incorrectly deploying during a collision. This issue has led to recalls for eight Tucson model years: 2005 through 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The airbag control module must be replaced to address this problem, but the cost should be covered by Hyundai at an authorized dealership due to the recall.
  • No Sound from Speakers: Some Hyundai Tucson 2009 owners have reported a strange issue where the speakers suddenly stop emitting sound, regardless of the source. This problem is typically caused by a software glitch and can be resolved with a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for about 15 minutes and then reconnecting it.
  • Transmission Troubles: The Hyundai Tucson has been known for transmission troubles, with many users reporting that their vehicle would not move forward and accelerate after coming to a stop on the road. This issue is especially noticeable in the 2016 model, but other transmission problems such as lack of shifting, transmission hesitation, and a lurch forward after a stop have also been reported.
  • Air Conditioning Issues: Another common problem with the Hyundai Tucson 2009 is issues with the air conditioning and heating system. This issue can result in a system not working, intermittent operation, or bad odor when the system starts. These problems can make driving the car uncomfortable and expensive to repair.
  • Engine Problems: Engine problems have sporadically plagued the Hyundai Tucson, including engine failure and loss of power while driving. The 2016 model has had both engine and transmission issues, making it a model to avoid.

These common problems with the Hyundai Tucson 2009 can be costly and dangerous, so potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-27
  • VIN: KM8JM12B49U
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING IN MOTION OR IN IDLE, CAR ENGAGES IN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE BECAUSE THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE AWARE OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE GOING FORWARD OR BACKWARD (DEPENDING ON THE POSITION OF GEAR.) SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAPPENS EVEN WHEN DRIVER'S FOOT IS PRESSING AGAINST BREAK PEDAL. DANGEROUS SITUATIONS INCLUDE TURNING ON THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING THE DAY TO DRIVE OUT OF THE GARAGE IN REAR MOTION. IN THIS SITUATION IT IS COMMON THAT THE CAR MOVES ABRUPTLY BACKWARDS AND ACCELERATES DOWN THE DRIVEWAY RAMP AND TOWARDS THE SIDEWALK AND STREET. IF THERE ARE PEOPLE WALKING BY THE DRIVEWAY OR SIDEWALK, OR CARS APPROACHING THE SIDEWALK, THEY MAY BE HIT. AS DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE DESCENT OF THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE RAMP. ANOTHER VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION INVOLVING PEOPLE POTENTIALLY BEING HURT OR EVEN KILLED INCLUDES CAR STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT IN IDLE, WHILE PEOPLE ARE CROSSING THE STREET IN FRONT OF THE CAR. IT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED THAT THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND MOVED FORWARD WHILE A PERSON WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAR, CROSSING THE STREET. THAT PERSON WAS ALMOST HIT. WHILE THERE WAS NOT ANY POTENTIAL PHYSICAL HARM, I (THE DRIVER) AND THE PERSON CROSSING THE STREET WERE VERY UPSET DUE TO THE IMMINENT DANGER. I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE CAR TWICE TO THE REPAIR SHOP TO LOOK AT THIS PROBLEM, BUT DESPITE COMPLETING TWO MAJOR SERVICES (COSTING ME ALMOST A THOUSAND DOLLARS), THEY HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THE ACCELERATION AND HOW TO FIX. I PLEAD THIS CASE HERE HOPING THAT THE NHTSA WILL FORCE HYUNDAI TO ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL URGENTLY.

2009 Hyundai Tucson recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2009 Hyundai Tucson.

2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2009 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

  1. Cristopher Aufderhar 2024-10-22

During the week of April 1, I noticed that my car was giving me a bumpy ride, like a roller coaster, tossing me up and down, back and forth, and side to side. The seat wasn't absorbing the shock, nor was it adjusting for my comfort. Then came the shocker: the car's right back wheel seemed to slide to the right, bumped, then righted itself. I was instantly knocked to the right and then back to center. This action takes less than a second and seems to happen on an uneven indentation, ridge, or something in the road. This happens out of the blue, and I don't feel safe. I notified Robert Lawson of my unhappiness with the seat and the rough ride.

  2. Ariel Veum 2024-09-21

I really enjoyed the overall style of this compact crossover, both inside and out. The controls and A/C were simple to use, and the price was very reasonable. The medium gray interior was a nice touch, and it's becoming harder to find nowadays. The ride was decent when I first purchased it, and the gear shifter was the best I've ever seen. I also appreciated the front air vents that could be aimed at your knees, which is a rare feature in most cars these days. The dual cup holders between the shifter and middle armrest were perfectly placed, and the actual cup holders in the doors were a nice touch as well. The windshield was also easy to clean without needing a step stool. However, as the tires lost tread, the ride did get a bit harsher. Additionally, the cargo space was on the smaller side, so it wasn't ideal for long family trips. There was also quite a bit of road noise, and the car would start to lean while cornering on sharp turns. One thing to note is that the steering wheel would get really light when driving above 72 Mph, which was a bit concerning. The dealership also didn't do a great job with the front wheel alignments during a long drive, which was frustrating. Unfortunately, there was no backup monitor offered, which would have been a helpful addition. In the hot summer sun, the cloth door inserts would come loose, but they would tighten up again when the temperature cooled down. The car also had a tendency to kick itself out of cruise control when going up steep hills on the highway, which was a bit annoying. Lastly, if you're over 5 foot 8 inches, you might hit your head when getting into the car. Overall, it was a friendly and approachable car, but it did have a few minor issues that could be improved upon.Bottom line - this car is best suited for city driving with just adequate V6 power. It was intended to be a single person's car, so I wouldn't recommend towing or carrying heavy loads with it.

  3. Zachary Bogan 2024-04-21

I recently decided to switch from a pickup truck to a more practical vehicle and after considering the RAV4 and CRV, I ultimately chose the Hyundai Tucson due to its affordable price and impressive warranty. I have found that American-made cars no longer meet my needs. The Tucson is incredibly spacious, comfortable, and offers great handling and visibility. While the 4c engine may seem a bit noisy and underpowered compared to my wife's 4c Accord, it is more than sufficient for my needs. Although I was hoping for better gas mileage than the current 24 mpg, I am optimistic that it may improve over time. One downside to the vehicle is the light-colored interior, which can be difficult to keep clean. In hindsight, I should have considered this before making my purchase. I have always preferred dark-colored carpets and car interiors as they tend to hide dirt and stains better. However, seat covers and mats have helped to mitigate this issue.

  4. Issac Shields 2024-04-15

This car has had several issues, including needing to replace the clutch, power steering, and alternator before reaching 40,000 miles. Additionally, there was an electrical fire and the car is not comfortable to drive, especially for someone of my height. The airbags are also a concern as they are located in a small space and could cause injury in the event of an accident. Two of the doors do not lock, even manually, and the power mirrors have stopped working. The steering is also difficult. It is important to note that there have been 5 recall letters for this car.

Positive 2009 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

  1. Allen Veum 2024-09-11

I bought my first compact SUV and I'm loving it so far! I had running boards installed to help my older friends get in and I love the feeling of riding high. The pickup is a little slow, but other than that, it's great. My friends have been giving me great comments on the vehicle too!

  2. Ricardo Feeney 2024-06-21

I recently purchased a 2009 Tucson and I'm really happy with what I've seen so far. The interior is clean and efficient, and the exterior is stylish.

  3. Delbert Beier 2024-06-05

I recently purchased this car after my trusty 90 Civic finally gave up the ghost. My wife and I were looking for a car that we could use for our future family and dog camping trips, as well as for our active and cycling lifestyle. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I can even fit a tandem bike in it with all the seats down! Safety was a top priority for us, and this car definitely delivers on that front. We were already fans of Hyundai's safety and quality, as my wife drives an '07 Sonata, so it made sense to consider another Hyundai. The car also provides a smooth ride for my 40-mile daily commute. We were able to get it at a very competitive price, which allowed us to stay under budget, even though the MPG is not as high as we would have liked. However, the added power of the V6 engine more than makes up for it.

  4. Donald Powlowski 2024-05-07

I just got my Tucson a few days ago and I absolutely love it! It's affordable, has a smooth ride, and is incredibly spacious on the inside. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants an SUV but can't afford a Benz, BMW, or Cadillac. So go ahead and get one, and enjoy the ride!

  5. Virgil Renner 2024-04-06

This car has been very reliable. It has had low maintenance costs for the 10 years I have owned it.
