The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2014 Hyundai Tucson problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Tucson 2014, the common problems reported are as follows:

  1. Transmission Shifting Issues:
Owners have reported transmission shifting incorrectly, leading to issues like the check engine light illuminating and the automatic transmission not shifting correctly. This problem typically arises due to speed sensor failures in the transmission, affecting over 100 owners across nine model years from 2005 to 2013. The average mileage when this issue occurs is around 112,113 miles. While the repair for this problem is relatively simple and inexpensive, diagnosing it at a service center may cost around $100.
  2. Airbag Control Module Defect:
Another common problem is a defect in the airbag control module, increasing the risk of the passenger-side airbag deploying incorrectly during a collision. This issue led to recalls for eight Tucson model years: 2005 through 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2016. Typically, the automaker covers the cost of replacing the airbag control module at authorized dealerships under recalls.
  3. Speaker Sound Issues:
Some owners have reported no sound coming from the speakers in SUVs equipped with a multimedia navigation system. This problem affects various sources of sound, including the radio, CD player, and navigation system. The cause of this issue is often a software glitch, which can be resolved with a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for about 15 minutes and then reconnecting it. Fortunately, this problem is easy to fix and usually does not require a visit to a service center.

These problems highlight some of the common issues faced by owners of the Hyundai Tucson 2014 model, impacting the driving experience and safety of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: KM8JT3AF4EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On August 17th 2024 my 2014 Hyundai Tucson wouldn't start. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership so that they can figure out why my vehicle wasn't working. I just leased the vehicle in March 2024. The dealership told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and they didn't handle engine work and it needed to be towed to an Hyundai dealership. I contacted the Hyundai dealership and they told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and that it would be serviced on October 17th 2024 at 11 am and hopefully done by 6 pm that day. I was and still am blown away that I have to be without my vehicle for 2 months. Fast forward to October 17th 2024 I'm excited about finally getting my vehicle back as this recall has caused me so much stress and a Major Inconvenience on my life. I contact Hyundai and am told the appointment is for a vehicle diagnostic and they don't have the engine it has to be ordered and then make an appointment to install. I also was told there were 2 other recalls on the vehicle that would be covered under the warranty or recall but the engine would not be covered under the warranty or recall because my name is listed under the dealership name on the title so my vehicle is currently still sitting at Hyundai with no answers from either party about me getting my vehicle fixed and back on the road

  • Summary: I was traveling in Texas with my child on the highway going 65 when my vehicle went into limp mode and immediately started making a noise like a card in a bicycle tire and would not accelerate. After a few seconds the check engine light came on blinking. I managed to make it to an exit and pull into a gas station. I called a tow company and had to wait more than an hour in the heat with my [XXX] for them to reach me. I called the closest dealer which was aslo an hour away and made sure they were aware the vehicle was coming. A family member drove two hours to get us. A service tech texted me that night and told me the car was awaiting a tech. First thing Monday I received another text that a new engine replacement had been approved. It actually took several phone calls and trying to reach anyone to actually find out that the car had code p1326 and had failed the rod bearing test. And I read more about the gdi theta II settlement and reached out to customer care and opened a ticket to be reimbursed for towing. The vehicle had a previous recall completed for the knock sensor. No rental cars were available to me AT ALL. I received a remanufactured short block all said and done in 10 days. My family was left with no car for that time. There were no warning signs on my car-no excessive oil consumption, no other lights or noises. terrified it will occur with the replacement. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: KM8JUCAG6EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Friday [XXX] I was driving my 4 year old to preschool. We were on the highway traveling about 55 mph. Without warning my car engine turned off. After coasting for awhile, because I couldn't pull over due to guardrails, I was able to get to shoulder of road. Vehicle was towed to local chevy dealership with inspection result of seized engine. car is available for inspection at chevy dealer, manufacturer has not inspected yet because I will need to have it towed the 35 miles to their dealership but they are aware of the situation. I didn't notice any symptoms prior to engine failure. This was a very scary situation for me and my child. I was so worried I was going to get hit by a car traveling behind me since my car was slowly coasting in the lane of the traffic and I couldn't get off of the highway right away because of guardrails. Once I could get off the highway, my car could only coast enough to get about 1 foot off of road which caused a hazard to other vehicles, myself, and child. • Summary: My car started to slightly jerk when beginning to drive, the next day, while crossing a very busy road, it made a loud clunking noise and harsh jerking. This happened 3 times and then subsided. I took my car to be looked at and was told I needed a brand new transmission. I have 129,000 miles on my car and never had any issues. This makes no sense! It's going to cost me $2300. The sunroof has also stopped working. This is my 3rd Hyundai, I've never had to have my transmission replaced with low miles. I work remote and live in Fl, I drive my car responsibly and never beat on it. I love Hyundai so much and my next car will be a Hyundai, but this is not right and could have caused me great harm when crossing the road. It is currently in the shop at Hyundai New Port Richey, Fl

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-07
  • VIN: KM8JUCAG7EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On Monday, August 7, 2023, I was accelerating, using the gear shifter and then went back into automatic-mode and the lights came on and car just stopped. It wouldn't restart - there was no noise, but the battery seemed to be working as the radio, lights, clock, etc. were all working fine. I was travelling at about 40 mph. There was a small shoulder and I was able to pull off, but I wasn't all the way over. A huge storm was about to start and the sky was turning dark. Heavy rain and up to 80 mph gusts of winds. I had my flashers on but it was hard for people to see me. I was afraid someone was going to hit me. My car was towed to the mechanic where they told me the battery had died. I picked it up the next day and began to drive home. Less than two miles away, I was stopped at a red light and when I went to drive again the lights were on and car had stopped. I was able to start it one more time to get it over to the side of the road where it wouldn't start again. This time I was on a 6-lane road during rush hour traffic. The car had to be towed again and I had to call 911 to have a police officer come and set up his car behind me so I wouldn't get hit by the cars speeding by. The next day the mechanic told me that the engine had seized up and my only option was to have the engine replaced which would cost $8,000! The car only has a little over 100,000 miles and has been well taken care of.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine Failure with no warning at all. All recalls were resolved prior to the engine failure. I was on a 4 lane bridge that was 7 miles long over Tampa Bay in heavy traffic. The engine light started flashing, the oil light came on and there was a loud knocking noice. Traffic was going anywhere from 65-75+ MPH. I lost acceleration, had to turn on hazards to try to get over. It’s amazing that we were not rear ended and injured when this happened. The Tucson was running fine prior to the engine failure. The dealer notes display: 99947 - engine failed bearing replaced long block engine and road tested. The engine blew on 5/28/2023. The replacement was completed on Saturday July 1, 2023 when the dealer called to say it was ready. I had 99,947 miles on it and always kept up on maintenance and recalls.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-14
  • VIN: KM8JUCAG7EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While passing a vehicle in a passing zone, all of my dash lights came on simultaneously and the engine killed. My fiancee and I were traveling at approximately 57 mph. She was driving and had to try maneuvering safely to the side of the road. We couldn't get it completely past the white line on the shoulder however and put our flashers on to warn other vehicles. Her great uncle Jim picked us up and towed us home on Mother's Day. My vehicle is available for inspection. My fiancee's uncle Dani came to look at it the following weekend and replaced the starter in case that was the issue. That didn't fix the problem. At that time he suspected the engine possibly "froze up". It sat in our yard until we had it towed the following month to a licensed auto repair facility (Dennys Auto in Dresser, Wisconsin). They inspected the vehicle and stated the engine was bad and replacement would cost $6,500+. I have owned this vehicle for 4 months prior to this incident and have put on less than 4,000 miles. I didn't file a police report or file an insurance claim as it was not damaged by an animal or other vehicle. We could have been hit by the car we were passing or any vehicle that drove by us when we were disabled on the side of the road. At this time I don't have any invoices available to upload as my vehicle is still at the auto shop until early next week. I can get statements from all parties involved upon request.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-03
  • VIN: KM8JT3AF4EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On November 17, 2022, I purchased a 2014 Hyundai Tucson from Premier Motorcars Inc. located at 3110 W. Tennessee St., Tallahassee, Florida 32304. The vehicle was advertised on their website as available for purchase. When I arrived and inquired about it, I was taken to the back where it appeared to be getting detailed. There was no Buyer’s Guide on any window of the vehicle, anywhere on the vehicle, nor one anywhere in the vehicle. When I asked about it, I was told it was because it had just been used for a trade in, passed inspection, and being considered for purchase by another party. I took it for a test drive and everything appeared to be in good working order so I proceeded with the purchasing process since the salesperson lowered the asking price. Less than four months later, on March 3, 2023, while I was taking my children to school, my check engine and check oil lights came on simultaneously and my vehicle shuttered to a complete stop and would not start. I finally managed to get it to crank and barely made it to a nearby gas station. I had it towed to my mechanic and was told it needed a new engine. My payments for this vehicle commenced in February 2023. I’m financed for a current balance of $12,015.95 that I am still paying $232.00 per month (and $114 per month for auto insurance) for a vehicle that I cannot drive and cannot afford to repair. A repair that I now know is due to a recall issued on February 2, 2022: Manufacturer Recall Number 218/ RECALL CAMPAIGN 218/ NHTSA Recall Number 22V056000 that I was never informed pertained to my vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-14
  • VIN: KM8JTCAF0EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Dec. 14, 2018 while driving 50 M.P.H. my 2014 Hyundai Tucson engine: 2.0-L I4-di with 113,000 miles, made an awful sound then moments later, the car engine lost all power, lights and steering. I nearly crashed my car. I was fortunate not to hit the car in front of me who immediately after my engine failed, suddenly stopped to make a left turn barely missing this car, I then had to correct my skid then make an abrupt 90 right hand turn off the highway and up a steep driveway, praying it was enough of an incline to slow my car bringing my car to a safe stop. Unable to restart the engine, the key having failed to illuminate the engine lights again, I was forced to call and pay for the car towed back to the Laconia, N.H. Hyundai dealer where I purchased the car and within 2,900 miles before the catastrophic engine failure. After five days I called the dealership only to find out then that the Hyundai Tucson's engine was blown and needed to be replaced. I was told there were no new Hyundai engines available, due to thousands of reported engine failures of the Hyundai 2.0 engine and, I would need to purchase a junkyard engine with and pay for another warranty. I can only hope the seriousness of the 2014 Hyundai Tucson catastrophic engine failure hazard convinces the N.H.T.S.A. to force Hyundai USA, 2.0 L I 4 direct injection engine to recall all Tucson models with these motors, joining other 2.0 engines installed in the recalled Santa Fe's and Santa Fe models with the exact same motor in my car.

Negative 2014 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

  1. Stephon Marquardt 2024-10-14

The car lost power and stopped on the freeway, despite all fluids being fine. While some may view Hyundai's as disposable vehicles, I am confident that this issue can be resolved with the right expertise.

  2. Berta Bernhard 2024-09-26

Although my experience with my Hyundai was not great, I took care of it and had it serviced regularly. Unfortunately, after only a few months of ownership, I had to replace the passenger side window switch and had it serviced again just a few months later. During a trip with my husband, the engine started making a knocking noise and had to be towed back to the dealership. It turned out that the bearings were wearing out and causing metal shavings in the cam shaft, resulting in a repair bill of about $13,000. However, I was fortunate enough to have purchased the top of the line extra warranty for my used vehicle, which covered most of the cost. Although there was an issue with the coolant hose clamp after the repair, which was not the fault of the vehicle, it was still a frustrating experience. While I may not choose to own another Hyundai, I will certainly be more careful in selecting a reputable dealership in the future.

We are in our late 60's and were looking for a small SUV. However, we have noticed that the mileage is not as advertised, averaging around 21MPG. Additionally, we have found that the car is underpowered, which can be concerning at times. In windy conditions, it can be a bit challenging to keep the car steady. We hope that Hyundai will take note of these issues and make improvements. Overall, we have not had the best experience with this car, but we remain hopeful that things will improve.

This form looks good, but the engine seems to be a mess as it consumes a lot of oil.

The engine failed after 125000 miles, and I paid to have it replaced since it was outside of the Hyundai warranty. Unfortunately, less than a year later, the replacement engine also failed. My mechanic has noticed an increasing number of newer model Tucsons with this issue. It is worth noting that there have been recalls issued for the newer version of this vehicle due to catastrophic engine failure.

I'm so excited about my new small SUV! I've only had it for three weeks, but so far everything is going great. The car looks fantastic, and the size is perfect for me. I'm really happy with the GLS model, especially since it has so many additional features that weren't available on the Nissan Rogue (which was my other option). There are only two minor issues I've noticed so far: the acceleration is a little sluggish, but it's not a big deal, and the Bluetooth doesn't allow for as much control with Android phones as it does with iPhones. Overall, I'm really enjoying my new car!

The seats are a bit hard, especially the back ones, but overall it's a great little grocery getter. I wouldn't recommend riding in the back seat for a long road trip though!

  3. Otho Jacobson 2024-11-16

Overall, this vehicle is quite reliable. I understand your concern about frequent brake work, even though you are not a 'brake rider'.

  4. Don Armstrong 2024-11-10

Tucson is such a great car to drive! It's incredibly comfortable and secure, with excellent gas control and a powerful motor.

  5. Jayce Bernhard 2024-09-17

That's a great choice! This Certified Pre-Owned car is definitely worth the money.
