The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2023 Hyundai Tucson problems

The Hyundai Tucson 2023 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily transmission shifting issues, engine problems, and headlight concerns.

  • Engine problems: A serious issue known to Hyundai is the issue of engine knocking or ticking. High mileage Tucsons over 150k miles are susceptible to sudden engine failure, with Hyundai recalling almost 100,000 units because of the problem. The issue was tracked down to a faulty connecting rod bearing, which affects the engine's ability to pass vehicles on the motorway or accelerate from a stop. Possible causes of this issue may be clogged fuel injectors, failing fuel pumps or sensors, airflow restrictions, or transmission problems. The problem affects higher-mileage vehicles more.
  • Headlight concerns: Tucson owners frequently report problems with dim, flickering headlights and premature bulb burnouts across multiple model years. Drivers often say that the low beams aren't enough for nighttime driving while the high beams are too bright. Possible causes are faulty headlight components, faulty seals that let water in, and issues with the bulbs used in some models.

In summary, while the Hyundai Tucson 2023 is known for its modern and stylish design, comfortable interior, and various features, it has been reported to have common problems related to transmission shifting, engine performance, and headlight functionality. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: KM8JFCA17PU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While traveling out of town, our 2023 Tuscon HEV with 31,000k started chugging/hesitating during acceleration. This chugging continued to worsen, so we took it to a Hyundai dealership to diagnose. We were told that fuel injector #3 was misfiring, and, as they did not have the parts in stock, that it would be safe to make the 5 hour drive back home to service the vehicle. During the first 4 hours of the drive the chugging/hesitating worsened, several times suddenly losing power and speed dropping from 70 or so mpg, to 40 mpg and lower, creating extremely harrowing and dangerous conditions from the higher speed drivers behind and around us on the highway. During the last hour of the drive, the vehicle started making a screeching sound, and emitting a burning smell, and chugging so convulsively that we made an emergency detour to drop it at the closest Hyundai dealership. The second dealership said that they could not use the 1st dealerships diagnosis, and that they would need to do their own assessment. Almost 2 weeks later, we were informed that the vehicle was fixed and that issue was a cracked tensioner belt and that likely is what set off the other code(s), including the fuel injector code. Upon picking up the vehicle we discovered that the same chugging issue was still occurring and returned it to dealership #2. They ran another diagnostic and determined that fuel injector #3 needed to be replaced-the issue that dealership #1 originally diagnosed. We were also told that, the problem is with the outsourced company that makes the fuel injectors, and that this is a recurring issue with the other injectors. Unfortunately, Hyundai has yet to take responsibility and save its customers a lot of inconvenience and safety concerns, by allowing dealerships to go ahead and replace all of the fuel injectors at once when the 1st one goes bad.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 5NMJBCAE5PH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving on a highway at 75 mph, on a clear day, with perfect visibility and driving conditions and my automatic emergency braking engaged. I was on cruise control with no one in front of me for approximately half a mile. There were cars behind me, so I had to swerve into another lane to avoid being rear ended. There was a sequence of beeps. If there were warning lights or messages, I was too busy dodging to see them. There may have been a squiggly line that came up, but I am unsure.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: KM8JECA13PU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Automatic transmission started malfunctioning at about 23,600 miles. Seemed unable to shift into higher gears and made strange noise. No warning lamps, signs, or malfunction codes appeared. Dealer confirmed bearing noise from transmission and said new transmission needed. New transmission installed 10/11/24 under warranty.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: KM8JBCAE4PU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This vehicle has been taken in on four separate occasions now to have know faulty fuel injectors replaced. All dealer service people acknowledge this is a know defect, all tow truck drivers have also confirmed the same, as well as thousands of people online. Huandai has not issued a recall. When the injectors go out, the car dies and will not accelerate and then leaves me stranded on the side of the road. This happens with little to no warning so is extremely dangerous. Do people have to die to make this a safety recall?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • VIN: KM8JF3AE3PU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I purchased the car in December of 2022 and within the first few months, it would shut down on the interstate. After a few minutes, it would crank back up and be fine. I immediately took it to the dealership (authorized Hyundai dealer) and they could not find an issue. A couple months later, it did it again. Again, I took it to the dealer, they didn't find anything, and I took it home. After a year, it stopped and would not start back up for a long time. I was stranded at a gas station for over an hour. I finally got it to crank, took it in, and they said they fixed a faulty fuel injector. Now it's October 2024 and it is back at the dealer because last week it left me stranded on the side of the interstate at night for a few hours. Again, they are replacing 2 fuel injectors.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
  • VIN: KM8JECA18PU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Our 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid developed an issue with the forward radar. At speed, the car produces a warning ding and then a warning message is displayed stating, "Critical Forward Safety functions are limited. Radar blocked." If the adaptive cruise control is engaged at the time of the warning, it immediately disengages, forcing the driver to quickly respond. If there is a vehicle in the adjacent lane to the right, the automatic braking may at times activate. It happens rain or shine, in good or inclement weather. We have cleaned the areas of the sensors without effect. One dealership has evaluated the vehicle twice and a second dealership once but we have been informed that there was no defect identified. I believe this issue to be a serious safety defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
  • VIN: 5NMJECAE3PH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The horn stopped working. I’m told by Hyundai service technician this is fairly common issue due to the location of the horns they are susceptible to “shorting out”

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: KM8JFDA2XPU
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Automatic Emergency Braking deployed without any external threat. I was driving 55 mph on the freeway and the automatic emergency braking engaged. The dash lights flashes, there was an audible alarm and the car braked. There was no danger in front of the vehicle and this action put me at risk of being hit from the rear by the car behind me. My safety was put at risk as my acceleration was greatly diminished compared to the traffic around me. There was no warning of the problem prior to the failure. It has not been confirmed by the dealer.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • VIN: 5NMJBCAEXPH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Attempted to make right turn onto busy road. Tried to accelerate to move with the traffic, when the car would not go any faster then 20MPH. Could hear cars braking behind me. Pulled over to the side. Message appeared on speedometer, " Limit 20MPH" with green Speedometer. Shut the car off tried to find problem in the manual. Didnt find anything. Turned car back on, it ran normal. Took it to Hyundai, Fort Myers, Appointment, on 08/28/24. They diagnosed it as : "driver assist speed setting was turned on inside settings. Turned off setting, performed a DTC code scanning with no dtcs in any system. Attached stui photos, performed a 2 mile test drive with no further issues". I can only hope that the problem is solved. I do not recall turning on anything like, and wouldn't know how to, but I guess it is possible. Wanted to notify the NHTSA, in case there are other owners experiencing the same issue. Thank you for concern

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: KM8JFDA23PU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On Tuesday August 6th 2024 car was put in the shop for an automatic DTC notification/check engine light. Our car is less than a year old with less than 10,000 miles on it. Our car was in the shop for a full 5 days and was given to us on the evening of Monday August 12th with assurances that it was safe to drive. While in the shop, our car grounding pump and numerous fuses were replaced. On Friday August 16th, we received a jarring "Check Hyundai system. Stop Safely." message while driving a short distance. We were given roughly 5-10 seconds before the car braked and stopped, causing us to almost be rear ended from the car behind us. This put not only me and my passenger's safety at risk, but the safety of the cars nearby us at that time, at risk. We shudder at the thought of what could have happened if we were traveling on a highway or congested roadway. There were no warning lamps or symptoms that would have suggested this would happen. We received a tow to the shop early morning of August 17th and to date, the car remains in the shop. We are confident that the car will not pass it's upcoming inspection and have requested that the service dealership perform an inspection before they attempt to give it back to us. I feel strongly that we are not safe driving this vehicle. Our local Hyundai service dealership employees have implied that they feel a recall of this car is forthcoming because they have begun to identify this issue in many cars. Given Hyundai's recent track record with recalls, I am extremely concerned for my safety.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
  • VIN: 5NMJE3AE3PH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: 2023 Tuscon Limited Gas - Multiple instances on Vehicle Forward collision warning system activating with alarms noted but no activation of emergency braking while sitting at stop light with cars in front and back that are not moving. Radio system going to show surround view and in some cases only front view even though at stop light. Biggest issue this weekend while taking a curve while merging onto another freeway the emergency braking system activated for no reason. First time occurrence. No one beside me or in front of me for some distance but did have someone behind me. It was a quick activation of the brakes and then release, I would say 1-2 second engagement. If had been longer and brought me to stop would of been an accident. I am taking the car to Westlake Hyundai to investigate this week and will report. Also having dealer investigate premature driver seat excessive wear. Car has 15.5K miles on it. I am concerned as this car is exhibiting same issues that my wife's 2018 Tuscon had that ended-up being successfully lemon lawed. I am also seeing way to many similar complaints and Hyundai needs to figure out what is going on with their emergency front collision sensing system and issue a fix or recall.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: KM8JECA15PU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I was seated in the front passenger seat while the car was parked. I swatted a mosquito on the top of the windshield, just right of the rearview mirror/camera area. I did not use much force. The windshield cracked from the impact. The car is not available for inspection. The crack became considerably larger as we drove the vehicle. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone yet, but will be taken for repair to an auto glass shop recommended by our insurer. There was no warning before the incident, and the windshield seemed to be in perfect condition. I called Hyundai to see if this was covered by the warranty, but they said no. I was shocked that such a small impact cracked the windshield - this seems like a defect to me

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
  • VIN: KM8JECA15PU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The ABS, ! Brake and Auto Hold lights activated. I took in into the Hyundai Joplin, MO dealership on May 2, 2024. They could not find any thrown codes and suggested it was most likely the "IEB Module" which they replaced and after doing so, the warning lights remained activated. As of May 22, 2024, they are ordering a new IEB Module to install (backordered into June). This seems oddly similar to previous ABS and brake problems of earlier models and makes me feel uneasy with the safety of this vehicle should they ever get it remedied.

SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: 5NMJBCAE6PH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving 35mph on a 3-lane street in the far left lane, a driver of a Ford F-150 was in the center lane about two car lengths ahead, decided to make a right turn onto a residential street (as if he were driving a semi). As I got closer, the forward collision warning suddenly alerted and immediately initiated emergency braking system causing all 3 passengers to be thrown forward. I hit the steering wheel before seat belt caught me. I was not even within distance and he was turning in opposite direction of my lane. There also seems to be sensitivity issues with lane keeping feature as in Phoenix, there are never ending freeway construction with make-shift lanes not always marked well. On several occasions the steering wheel was jerked out of my hands because it couldn’t detect the lanes any longer. It has caused me to avoid freeways all together and has made me miss the exit off the freeway twice now. I thought this feature only activated during active cruise control, but apparently it does it regardless. Now I’m beginning to have problems with display going out at the worst times. I will be taking my Tucson to a dealer to have them deactivate both systems & advise of display. I shouldn’t have to pay for this. I’ll take over the driving, thank you very much!

Hello there! We are sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with our car. We would like to help you resolve this issue as soon as possible. Please contact our customer service team and we will do our best to assist you. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  2. Theo Barrows 2024-06-25

The car's gas mileage does not meet the advertised window sticker. However, the salesperson informed me that it would improve after a 2 to 3 thousand mile break-in period, which unfortunately did not occur. This lack of transparency is not an acceptable business practice. It is important to exercise caution when considering this car.

  3. Eliseo Hilpert 2024-05-29

This mid-size SUV has some great features, but some of the 'convenience' features can be a bit overwhelming. Unfortunately, these features cannot be disabled or turned off. Personally, I prefer actual gauges to screens, and I find the fuel indicator to be poorly placed. While some may find the smart cruise control to be helpful, I find it to be overrated and it detracts from the driving experience. Additionally, the average MPG indicator takes up too much space on the dash and is not very useful. However, I do appreciate the driver attention and other convenience messages, even if they can be a bit annoying at times.

Positive 2023 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

  1. Jorge Toy 2025-02-03

I used to own a 2013 Kia Optima, but with two kids, I needed a larger vehicle. After doing some thorough research, I was leaning towards a Kia Sorento with the 3rd row being the kicker for the kids. However, I compared the Sorento to a few different cars (Tucson, RAV4, CR-V) and found that the RAV4 base model was more expensive than the others, and the price for the trim I wanted for the CR-V was high. After comparing the features and costs, I found that I could get everything I wanted in the Tucson for $3-4k less (I would lose the 3rd row, but my wife and I were fine with that and we could trade out in the future if need be). I test drove the Tucson and really enjoyed it, so I went with it. I chose the SEL AWD with the Convenience Package (gas model). The exterior is very stylish and I love the Amazon Grey color (the green tint really makes it eye-catching). The convenience package also gives it the 19-inch wheels which I think makes it look and feel better. The power liftgate is GREAT! I love how you can open and close it with a button. You can still manually open it, but I get a kick out of the power function. The interior looks elegant with the leatherette seating and large touch-screen. The seats are comfortable for long and short trips, and I like how the back seats can recline. Although there isn't a sunglasses holder, there is an aftermarket option available to put one in. The console area is large so you can put a good amount in there. The cargo in the rear is spacious and can fit a good amount (it's a little bigger than my wife's Chevy Equinox), and you can fit way more with putting the seats down, but most folks should be able to get away with just the back. I like the sunroof options as it's just a basic sunroof (I've read mixed things on the panoramic ones). The ride is quiet and comfortable, and riding over potholes isn't too bad either.I've read a lot about the engine, and this was a major consideration since I have a lead foot. However, I found that the Sport drive mode makes a load of difference; it feels looser overall and you can punch the gas better. Additionally, I've noticed that with the normal mode, it acclimates to your own style. It's something you'll need to get used to, but it's really not THAT bad. I appreciate the safety features, and I like how you can adjust them off completely or just receive a simple warning. The lane-keep assist is nice, but it can be too sensitive. However, this is something you can adjust, which is good. The backup camera has a good visual area, and I like the parking camera button feature. I get a real kick out of the speed limit feature, as it really senses the speed limit sign well and notes it on the screen. The infotainment system is sweet. It's fully touch with the volume and tune knobs acting as scroll wheels, and that's an adjustment, but the steering wheel volume/station buttons are good fallbacks. You also have digital gauges with the convenience package, and the themes are limited but pretty cool. The radio screen can take a couple seconds to load and move around, but it's not unbearable. I like how it has all your favorites in the menu (FM/AM/SiriusXM) which makes it easier for station changing. I love that it had HD Radio standard, as the sound quality is better and you get additional stations. The sound quality is very good overall for the trim. Bluetooth isn't an issue and the calls sound good. The microphones are above you so they can hear you fine. The wireless charging option is great for compatible phones. I really enjoy the Bluelink features, such as the ability to remotely start the car and adjust the climate settings. However, I do wish that it came standard rather than being a subscription-based service after the first three years. The remote start option is fantastic, especially since it's a factory-installed feature. Additionally, the range is larger than what is stated in the manual, which is a pleasant surprise. I am a big fan of the dual climate system, which allows for individual settings to be adjusted and synced for the entire car. It cools the car quickly, and even at high fan speeds, it remains comfortable. The 10-year warranty is also a major plus, and the included maintenance is a great added bonus. Overall, I have put about 1100 miles on the car and I am very happy with it. If you're in the market for a small SUV, I highly recommend considering this one.

Love the roominess, smooth ride, power, great fuel economy since you're coming from a mini van that got 18mpg. You'll love all the safety features. It's a comfy ride. You must be so glad they added the power hatch to the 2023 hybrid blue trim this year. It's a much needed feature. All around, you should be very happy with your Tucson hybrid!!

From the dealership to the performance, reliability, and safety of the automobile, I am thrilled to say that this was the best choice for me out of the four or five cars I researched. This is actually my second time with a Tucson and I am happy to report that I am not disappointed.

Well, it was the SE model, so a plain Jane and a good price. But all in all, I can't believe that in this day and age it wasn't set up for Sirius XM.
