The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2020 Hyundai Tucson problems

The Hyundai Tucson is a popular compact crossover SUV known for its modern design and comfortable interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Hyundai Tucson, particularly the 2020 model, based on owner complaints:

  • Transmission shifting/gearbox issues: One of the most common problems reported by Tucson owners is related to transmission shifting. This includes rough or delayed shifting, which can lead to an unpleasant driving experience. These issues may result in jerky or jarring gear changes, making driving difficult. In some cases, addressing the rough or delayed shifting involves recalibrating the transmission software, which usually requires visiting a Hyundai dealership.
  • Engine failure, knocking, and other noises: A serious issue known to Hyundai is the issue of engine knocking or ticking. High mileage Tucsons over 150k miles are susceptible to sudden engine failure, with Hyundai recalling almost 100,000 units because of the problem. The issue was tracked down to a faulty connecting rod bearing, which affects their ability to pass vehicles on the motorway or accelerate from a stop. Possible causes of this issue may be clogged fuel injectors, failing fuel pumps or sensors, airflow restrictions, or transmission problems. The problem affects higher-mileage vehicles more.
  • Headlights: Tucson owners frequently report problems with dim, flickering headlights and premature bulb burnouts across multiple model years. Drivers often say that the low beams aren’t enough for nighttime driving while the high beams are too bright. Possible causes are faulty headlight components, faulty seals that let water in, and issues with the bulbs used in some models.
  • Excessive clutch wear and/or flywheel faults: Several owners have reported excessive clutch wear and/or flywheel faults that have led to costly repairs, even under warranty. Make sure, therefore, that any manual Tucson you’re viewing has a clutch pedal that operates freely and shows no sign of slippage, and keep an eye out for any odd sensations through the clutch pedal or sluggish starting during your ownership.
  • Air conditioning issues: Another common problem with these models is the air conditioning and heating system. While this isn’t dangerous, it can be expensive and make driving the car a painful experience. This issue can be seen in all of the years we listed earlier. Some examples of air conditioning and heating problems include system not working, intermittent operation, and bad odor when the system starts.
  • Forward collision-avoidance system issues: Some of the newer Hyundai models are equipped with the Forward Collision-Avoidance – an advanced safety feature designed to assist in preventing collisions. However, several 2019 Tucson owners reported having issues with this system. According to one report, the Tucson had a delayed reaction to a potential collision, and that’s after setting the system to early warning. Furthermore, some drivers expected that the system would give out two warning signals before the system took over and automatically applied the brakes. However, some drivers had to use the brakes themselves.
  • Acceleration troubles: Difficulty accelerating is one of the hallmark issues with 2016, 2017, and 2018 Tucsons. Several drivers reported they had trouble accelerating after coming to a stop. Stepping on a gas pedal does nothing, and the SUV remains unresponsive. Some reports indicated that it takes more than a few seconds for the vehicle to rev up.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Hyundai Tucson owners. However, it's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues, and many Tucson owners have reported having a positive ownership experience. It's always recommended to thoroughly research any vehicle before purchasing and to consider factors such as maintenance history, mileage, and condition.

CHECK TO SEE IF YOU TUCSON IS IMPACTED

Hyundai USA has recently announced a recall notice on all 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Hyundai Tucsons for a faulty Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit that could corrode internally and cause an electrical short.

Is Hyundai Tucson 2020 fuel efficient?

As it's only a mild-, rather than full-hybrid, the 2.0 CRDi 48-volt-equipped Tucson has a claim of 49.6mpg against its name. Worst offender in the range? That'll be the 1.6 T-GDi petrol with the six-speed manual gearbox – in reality you'll struggle to match the officially quoted 37.7mpg.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
  • VIN: KM8J33AL0LU
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: I went to Thompson Automotive to finance a vehicle and within a month and half my engine blew. There were no engine lights, no lost of oil, no warning, no signs of any error, before this series of malfunctions took affect. I was on my way to the dealership and my car being slowing down to a complete stop as I was getting off the highway ramp. I was traveling at the speed of 25mph, when the car started to make loud noises that I never heard before that day, and completely shut down in front of a huge tractor trailer in traffic. The dealership has had my car since 6/7/24. Now the car has about 85,000 miles on it. I have to pay another $3,000 for my portion to get a new engine. Which is outrageous considering I just agreed to pay $19,990. I am highly disappointed that I lost my job and everything behind this horrific situation that actually feels like a set from the beginning. Now that I’m reading all the comments and unfortunate but very similar situation everyone is suffering from with the particular car. I can’t fathom why it’s still on the market to be purchase for consumers with these major and potentially deadly problems.

Got out, checked engine under hood and components. Dip stick had oil. Car had no signs of anything else. Vehicle would not start, called tow. Waited 5 hours for tow. Did not hear back from Hyundai dealership in a month. Submitted all articles of maintenance. Going on two months and was told to resubmit. Three months prior, engine over heated due to original hose component coupler piece melting.

  • VIN: KM8J2CA42LU
  • Components: ENGINE

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • VIN: KM8J3CA46LU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This is the second Hyundai Tucson that I have owned and the same thing has happened wih both of them. My daughter also bought her Hyundai Tucson the same day as I got mine in June, 2020, and the same thing is happening to her. It starts with the engine warning light coming on, and then finding that the engine oil is low in between oil changes. There is no visible sign of the oil leak (no drops on the driveway, no oil in the engine compartment, etc.) but now the oil is disappearing at an alarming rate. My daughter has had her car looked at, and it appears that she may have to get a new engine, which is what happened with my previous Tucson (2015). Luckily, Hyundai "good-willed" me the replacement of my previous engine, but now I am at, or close to the limit on my extended warranty (for which the dealership did not give me paperwork), and have an engine that is just disappearing engine oil. Hyundai has to know of the issue, but refuses to make corrections to the problem which sticks people with huge bills to correct a problem they know exists. I have seen MANY complaints about this exact thing, so it's not a secret.

SEAT BELTS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
  • VIN: KM8J3CA47LU
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: When driving this car it is hard to go to higher speed. Acceleration is a huge problem. Coming on to the highway I have to wait until there's no one approaching due to the fact that it takes about 40 seconds to a minute for the car to accelerate once it comes to a stop. When switching lanes it takes 40 to 60 seconds to accelerate as well. That's not safe. God forbid someone was speeding directly behind me I would absolutely be hit. It takes to long to accelerate and get out of the way. I was nearly hit by a semi truck due to this problem. Thank goodness the truck moved to the other lane because the Tuscon couldn't! Also the car won't allow you to close off the outside air while if the front or rear air function. So if I want to place air on the windshield I have to breathe in the air from the person in front tailpipe. That's crazy. This is the first car I've had that did this. It's disgusting especially living in ny why should I have to breathe in that toxin. Also I can not find the third seat belt for the passengers in the back. The car is suppose to be a five passenger car however only four can safely be seated.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: KM8J33A45LU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Electrical rear brake system. My rear driver side brake like sometimes fails to operate properly. Brake warning light on dash comes on. This happens on and off. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: KM8J3CA40LU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is a 2020 Hyundai Tucson with AWD. Current mileage of the vehicle is 58,309. In the last 10K miles, there have had 4 separate instances of a sustained flashing check engine light that has put the car into limp mode. Since the first instance, a knock sensor, catalytic converter, and spark plug coil, among other things, have been replaced. However, the issues persist and have yet to be resolved. The engine continues to misfire, resulting in dangerous driving situations. Most recently (XXX) the car went into limp mode on an interstate highway where the vehicle was unable to accelerate and could not exceed 2000 RPMs. The code scanner read P1326 - Glow Relay Short Circuit. This was just a week after the vehicle was towed to McGovern Hyundai in Brockton, due to the car being in limp mode (XXX) and the vehicle was given a clean bill of health. I was told that there was no cause for concern and the code was cleared. I’m extremely concerned about this issue with the vehicle and don’t feel that it is safe to drive, especially when it loses power on the highway. The vehicle is insured, but has not been inspected by an insurer. Nor has the vehicle been inspected by police. The car has been inspected by the dealership, but that have not produced any findings. The car is certainly available for inspection upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: KM8J33AL5LU
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2020 Hyundai Tuscon May I have had numerous incidents where my stereo navigation screen goes black, and then instantly comes back. This happens frequently; whether or not my phone is plugged in. I have stopped plugging my phone into the car. May 1, 2024 As I was backing into my garage this afternoon I started the turn to get into my driveway. I turned the steering wheel tight and it seemed to lock up just like the car had turned itself off. My vehicles main screen went blank along with the stereo navigation. May 16 2024 As I backed into my driveway and straightened my steering wheel position to get into the garage the vehicle screen went black along with the navigation stereo screen I felt the steering wheel tug a little bit along with a knocking noise All lighting quickly came back and then the same exact thing happened again. I then finished backing in and turned the car off. May 18 My husband and I went to the market 1 mile away and as he was backing into the driveway at home the steering wheel locked up then the stereo navigation screen went black and we heard bumping sounds same as before. This happened numerous times in a row going in reverse and forward and we were able to get two videos. After we got the car parked in the garage we tried to open the back hatch to get the groceries out and we were unable to do so manually or with the key fob. At that time, we then noticed that the entire electrical system was down. I then sat in the front seat, tried to turn the car on and it was completely unresponsive. A few seconds later, we were able to open the back hatch along with turning the car on. At this point, we decided to have the car towed in as opposed to driving it in to have it looked at. We have videos of the issue as it happens. But cannot upload to your site

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
  • VIN: KM8J3CAL4LU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving home last week when I came across a large crash on the highway. Traffic was backed up for a mile. I decided to turn around through one of those crossovers and head a different way home. I accelerated to catch up to the oncoming traffic when my car suddenly sounded more loud like it was struggling to accelerate. I got onto the off ramp and my car slowed from 70mph to 40mph and would not go any faster. It began lurching and I decided to try to get off the highway and get as close to home as I could as it was 9pm. My car slowed to a stop and the oil light and engine light and battery light came on. A few moments later the whole dashboard lit up and the car died. I popped the hood and to my horror there was literally no oil in my car. My oil light never came on and my oil change service notice never came on at any point. I took it to a dealership where they told me my engine has blown and needs replacing. This engine experienced the same issues as listed in the lawsuit earlier this year, only my 2.4L was not included as an affected model. This car only has 88,000 miles on it and has had at least 9-12 oil changes. My car was working normally until it shut down, no warning, no lights, and no other issues this entire time I’ve had it. I was broken down on a country road in the middle of the night with no phone service. Hyundai claims my car was not one of the engines affected by the recall or lawsuit, yet my car did exactly what others stated happened to theirs.

  • Summary: In May of 2023, my house burnt down. We were in it at the time when the smoke detector went off. When I opened the door from to kitchen to the garage, I saw flames shooting up at the front of my car. The fire was so intense at that moment, I knew all we could do was flee the house. I grabbed my wife and we ran out the front door. You do not have a recall listed for my vehicle, but Hyundai lists two. The first one listed can potentially cause a fire. Both recall maintenance was performed on my car. I sincerely believe that the car was the cause of the fire. Since it had been sitting in my garage for approximately four hours, the engine wasn't hot. I had it regularly serviced at the local Hyundai dealership. There were multiple fire investigators, including one from Hyundai. Here is the recall information. • VIN: KM8J3CA4XLU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The "check engine" light has come on at least three (3) times. The first time, the car went into slow down mode. We stopped at a mechanic, who reset the computer so that we could drive it. We then had it towed to our mechanic, who told us about the problems these Hyundai engines are having. He told us that engine replacement was inevitable. It happened two (2) more times. This time, we had it towed to a Hyundai dealer. The first time, they kept the car for two weeks, only to tell us that they could not "replicate the problem". We opened a file with Hyundai USA [Hyundai Case Management #: [XXX]. It happened again. Same message: "Could not replicate the problem." The blogs are full of horror stories about the engines failing during high speed travel. [XXX] The Virginia Lemon Law does not apply until at least three (3) attempts have been made to repair it at a Hyundai authorized service provider. Our only options appear to be suing Hyundai, or continuing to drive it, running the risk of an engine failure/shutdown at high speed, or trying to sell it to CarMax with a known safety issue. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
  • VIN: KM8J3CA49LU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I turned on a road that the speed limit is posted 55mph and I accelerated up to about 50 and suddenly my speed dropped back to about 10mph and the car began shaking and the engine light was flashing. There was absolutely no warning at all. I had left my house about 15 minutes prior and everything was fine while I was driving up until then. My engine failed. If I had entered an busy highway I would have most likely caused a Major Accident and been killed and/or killed others. It happened around 5:00 A.M. in the dark which was bad enough as I was alone on my way to work. I had it towed to the Dealership and they replaced the knock sensor and assured me that the car was perfectly safe now. But on Dec. 1,2022 I was driving on a 35 mph road and the car did exactly the same thing and I had to be towed again. This time after much arguing the engine was condemned and replaced.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-27
  • VIN: KM8J2CA47LU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving down the interstate to go back to my college, I noticed a cloud of white smoke coming out of my exhaust. Seconds later, I no longer could accelerate and white smoke was also coming out of the engine. There were no lights on my dash at this point or at any point before this day. I quickly tried to get off of the road when I noticed my car was no longer going. I managed to get to the side of the road where finally my engine and oil light came on. I waited 2.5 hours for a tow truck on the side of the interstate, where I was barely off of the road. It was taken to the dealership where I bought it (since the car only has 32k miles on it) for a "hole in the engine" which is what I was originally told by the service department. Two days later, I received a phone call that there actually was no hole in my motor, and that the drain oil plug disappeared from my engine while driving, causing all of the oil to spill out of my engine that day on the interstate. Despite getting an oil change only 1500 miles ago from this exact dealer, they stated that the plug would have fallen out immediately after their service if it was placed back incorrectly. Hyundai stated this is now an "owner's problem" and that I was to call my insurance company to get an estimate from them because the dealership would not cover it since it was no longer a warranty issue. I called my insurance company who then got pictures from the dealer of the engine and a video. They then called me stating this type of damage is not covered under my policy, and that they would not pay for it. So here I am, stuck with Hyundai refusing to pay for a damaged engine even though the oil drain plug fell out, which inherently caused the damage, and despite having a 10 year/100k mile warranty on the motor. I found out there is an open investigation through the NHTSA about this exact issue and was hoping to receive clarity on what I can do.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: KM8J2CA45LU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: NHTSA should have a non-official recall warning for Hyundai vehicles that have this software based Safety Defect, which is some models don't have a Passive Engine Immobilizer, and the vehicles can be easily stolen by starting the engine with a USB cord. Thankfully Hyundai(recall) offered a free Anti Theft Software Update, and a steering wheel lock. I checked my VIN number with the Hyundai Dealership in Oregon, and they said my car already received the Anti Theft Software Update. The only reason I knew my 2020 Tucson had this issue, is because State Farm cancelled my insurance a month after I started paying for it. State Farm and Progressive currently deny new policies for vehicles without a Passive Engine Immobilizer. Also State Farm still denied my insurance after I got the software update. Affected Hyundai models from 2011 to 2021 that have standard “turn-key-to-start” ignition systems/without a Passive Engine Immobilizer, are the Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, Genesis Coupe, Palisade, Kona, Venue.

On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.

Negative 2020 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Tucson cars. I've had two so far and unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the engine losing power periodically on acceleration. I reported the issue to my dealership and Hyundai USA, but it was difficult to diagnose because it couldn't be reproduced while at the service department. I'm now experiencing the same issue with my 2020 model, even though I was assured that the issue had been corrected. It's even more frequent now. Interestingly, a family member of mine is also experiencing the same issue with their 2021 Sonata. Have you experienced anything similar? Thanks for your time!

Both passenger side windows stopped working at exactly 60,525 miles. The quote for repair was $1000 minimum. However, I am confident that I can find a more reasonable solution to fix the issue. I will not let this setback discourage me from finding a better option.

The car itself is okay. However, the Bluelink remote start feature leaves much to be desired. Personally, I would not base my decision to purchase this vehicle solely on the Bluelink performance. A remote start key fob would be a better alternative.

About a month after I bought it, I realized that the front collision warning system was not working. I took it back to the dealer, but unfortunately, they were unable to fix it. They called in a different technician, who also couldn't resolve the issue. They even contacted a special factory representative, but due to the pandemic, they were unable to send anyone out. It has now been a year, and I am still unable to get it fixed.

Although this car is equipped with many efficient electronic features, we have unfortunately experienced some safety issues while driving it. Despite taking it to the dealership five times since purchasing it last December, the problem has not been resolved. The first instance was particularly concerning as the engine died just as we entered the highway, but thankfully my husband was able to safely move the car out of the way of a passing Semi. The second time, we were following a dump truck on Hwy 285 and when we tried to pass, the engine slowed down unexpectedly. We were fortunate to have enough space to fall back behind the truck. We took the car to the dealership twice in one day for similar incidents, but they were unable to find anything wrong. It has now been a week since they have had the car and they still say nothing is wrong. It is certainly frustrating. We have been loyal Honda drivers for many years, but decided to try a Hyundai. While the car is comfortable and we love the electronic features, we are concerned about its safety.

Positive 2020 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

I recently purchased the 2020 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate after searching for the perfect crossover SUV from Thanksgiving to just before Christmas. I have been driving it for a few weeks now and I am completely satisfied with my purchase. It is an excellent value and competes very well in its class. Although I initially wanted the Limited trim line, I couldn't find any available in Cream White Pearl, which is a stunning, sparkling white paint. Even the Ultimate trim wasn't available in white for the first few weeks of my search. However, just as I was about to buy a Sportage from a Kia dealership, a local Hyundai dealer found the Tucson in white with the Ultimate trim. I definitely prefer the Tucson over the Sportage, so I happily bought the Hyundai Tucson instead. There are so many things to love about this vehicle that I have no buyer's remorse at all! The leather only comes in tan for the white exterior colors, and although I initially wanted black leather, I quickly grew to love the tan leather. The Ultimate trim has ventilated seats which I think will be great in the summer months. The panoramic roof is amazing! Today, I drove around under blue skies and 72-degree weather and the experience was just wonderful. The adaptive cruise control is a nice feature, and it has several settings to adjust how sensitive it is. All the other safety features are fantastic to have; I've wanted blind spot detection ever since my son bought his car with that feature included. There are many other safety features too, like the birds-eye camera view that gives the driver a 360-degree view around the vehicle. I prefer this view over the normal backup camera view (which is also available). The vehicle ride is very smooth, the cabin is quiet, and the infotainment system is very easy to figure out. Although it has Apple Play, it's even easier to use the built-in navigation system. (Note that these features are mostly only on the Ultimate trim). Acceleration is acceptable with the 2.4-liter engine; when I test drove other Tucson trims with the 2, I found it to be a great choice. The 2.0 liter engine may not be the best choice as it can be sluggish. However, if you can afford the larger engine, it is definitely worth it. The cargo space of the Tucson is slightly less than its competitors, but it is still sufficient for most needs. I found it easy to load my bike into the back of the Tucson with the back seats folded down after going biking today. The Ultimate trim offers many more features and is like driving a prestige vehicle with all sorts of bells and whistles, but for thousands of dollars less. If you are looking for a reliable brand with a ton of safety and convenience features, then the Hyundai Tucson Ultimate is a great choice. Hyundai is a solid, quality, value-oriented brand. While it may not be the most prestigious brand, it is still a great choice for those who prioritize reliability and features over brand affinity. If this new Tucson holds up as well as my 2016 Hyundai Elantra (which I’m selling to my daughter), then I will be very pleased!

I bought the AWD Sport on December 2nd and have been enjoying it for almost 2 months now. Overall, I'm really happy with it, although the gas mileage has been a bit disappointing - I've only been able to get 23mpg out of the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine. But that's just a minor issue. I absolutely love the auto hold feature, as well as the LED headlights and tail lights. The 8-speaker Infinity sound system is also amazing - it really packs a punch! And let's not forget about the gorgeous aqua blue color and beautiful 19-inch wheels. All in all, I would highly recommend the 2020 Tucson to anyone in the market for a compact crossover.

I'm so glad to hear that you were impressed with the safety features and the Apple integration! Additionally, you can easily use Google directions through the on-board screen with voice directions. The lane assist feature is also great for keeping you in the middle of your lane. Overall, it sounds like you had a good ride and found the car to be fairly quiet and solid. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  4. Ervin Crona 2025-01-12

The car has been running smoothly for 3 years without any issues. It is great for off-roading and has not caused any problems. The car is comfortable, quiet, and easy to drive. It has all the features one could ask for, making it a stunning SUV. Although it lacks memory seats and a passenger lumbar adjustment, it is still a great car. We compared it to other cars like the Rav4 and CRV, but the Tucson was by far the best. The Rav4 was too loud and had issues with acceleration, while the CRV had battery and gas build-up problems. The Tucson is easy to use and has a simple interface. We have driven it for about 4000 miles and have had no issues. It is a great vehicle for off-roading and we love it even more after 6 months of use.
