The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2017 Hyundai Tucson problems

The 2017 Hyundai Tucson has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to engine issues, transmission faults, electrical problems, and recalls.

Engine issues include rough idling, stalling, decreased fuel efficiency, loss of power during driving, knocking sounds, and gray smoke from the engine compartment

Transmission concerns have been another area of concern for some Tucson owners, with reports of erratic shifting, transmission slipping, and hesitation during acceleration

. These issues may affect the overall driving experience and could lead to more significant complications if not addressed.

Electrical system malfunctions have been reported, including electrical shorts, dashboard display malfunctions, infotainment system issues, and the car restarting without turning off

. In some instances, the car's display is reported to blackout when putting the gear into reverse, indicating a malfunction with the reverse camera.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the 2017 Hyundai Tucson has been the subject of three recalls

  1. The engine's connecting rod bearings may wear down too soon, causing damage to the engine.
  2. Internal corrosion of the anti-lock brake hydraulic electronic control unit may result in an electrical short, which could ignite an engine compartment fire.
  3. The impacted cars might have an add-on trailer hitch wiring harness, which could cause the trailer brake lights to stay on all the time if the tow hitch module malfunctions.

These problems, while numerous, have been addressed by Hyundai, which has attempted to resolve them by recalling the vehicles to address the majority of the problems

. Despite these issues, the Hyundai Tucson is a great SUV in terms of comfort, features, and build quality, but it is not as good as its more expensive competitors, such as the Volkswagen Tiguan or the Honda CRV, which have significantly better performance and drive quality

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-13
  • VIN: KM8J33A20HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I reported a problem with my engine to the Clay Cooley Hyundai dealership (Mesquite) in April 2022. I told them that my oil was burning a lot faster than normal. My car was currently under warranty at the time, which would have covered a new engine replacement. The dealership instructed me to do “oil consumption” tests and had me come in every 1000 miles to see if there were any oil leaks. Once I completed the tests, they told me to do another round of testing, which I thought was odd. I ended up doing tests from April-October 2022, and by the time I was finished my warranty expired. They said that my engine was fine and good to drive. I took my car to the same dealership in August 2024 with the same issue and that my engine wasn’t accelerating. They are now telling that there is a problem with my engine and charging me a new one for $10k. It would've been covered under my warranty in 2022, but they had me drive over the warranty limit so that a new engine wouldn’t be covered anymore. After doing research, there was a Class Action lawsuit about the engine for my vehicle. The problem is damage to the engine’s connecting rod bearings. You could hear a knocking sound from my engine. This issue has been happening from 2022-2024. I had to do oil changes more frequently. After consulting with a local auto care shop, they said it was a manufacturing problem. Hyundai put me back on the road with an unsafe car. The engine should have been fixed back in 2022. Hyundai Corporate is only offering to pay 50% of the engine (I would have to pay $5k-8k). I feel like they knew about the bad engine because of the lawsuit, and the reason I had to do a second round of tests was to drive over the warranty mileage.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-02
  • VIN: KM8J33A22HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine is consuming extreme amounts of oil. 1-2 quarts a week. The oil light does not alert that oil is low and could cause a very dangerous situation. My car was running and just stopped while driving because oil had coated the spark plugs. Hyundai refused to honor my warranty. They want the car for 6 months to put new motor and only after I pay $1000 for a cleaning when they even admitted it was a known problem and I should "try to sell the car as fast as possible and not mention the oil consumption" I've continued trying to get them to correct this since November 2023

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: KM8J33A29HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On [XXX] my daughter was driving in Meridian Ms and when she was at a red light the 2017 Hyundai Tuscon that she was driving started shaking and all the lights on the dashboard came on and she couldn't drive because it wouldn't move. She called a tow truck to have it taken to Firestone. When they looked at it, they said the reading was spark plugs and fuel injectors that needed to be replaced. After they did that, the car still would not work. We paid 1300.00 dollars for them to do this. We then had it towed to Hyundai in Flowood Ms. We learned that the whole engine needs to be replaced. We Take very good care of our cars and this shouldnt be happening. I see that there is an extended warranty for 2017 tucsons with engine failures, but our particular engine is not included in this. We have a turbo 1.6. I asked Hyundai why these particular motors are not included and they didnt know. I found alot of people are having the same engine issues as I am and i think Hyundai needs to help me out. The replacement cost of this is going to be about $10000.00 dollars. My car only has 84000.00 miles on it. Hyundai knows that there are problems with these vehicles but refuse to be any help what so ever. I just dont understand why my engine isn't included in their 150000.00 mile warranty. I dont know where else to turn for help. Thank you. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: KM8J3CA24HU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Took my 2017 Hyundai Tucson 1.6t engine into the service center on 8/21 for a check engine light and Bluelink notification of "A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected" that came on Sunday 8/18. Service center diagnosed P0326 ($159.00) From the service center: We have pulled code P0326 for an issue with the knock sensor readings. The vehicle can sue an oil change as is due and there is a gasket leak which sounds like it is from turbo or manifold gasket which is causing that rattling noise you're hearing. Below is the three itemized recommendations for this vehicle. 1) Knock sensor replacement -$635 +taxes installed 2) Oil change recommended $ 85 +taxes 3) Turbo gasket replacement $205 + taxes installed. I bought my car in 2020 and only have 53,000miles on it and was told it's out of warranty so this isn't covered - even though the 2017 Tucson's are recalled/warranty for life for engine issues for the same exact reasons mine was brought in for. This is my second hyundai, which I have always loved; however, I am disappointed in the quality of car not being up to standard due to manufacturing, and I am paying the price for it. The10yr/100k mile and 5yr/60k mile warranty advertising is misleading and deceiving. If I could go back, I wouldn't have bought a hyundai

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: KM8J33A26HU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The problem began in mid to late April 2024 with the Tucson shuddering in the driveway while moving forward slowly. This vehicle has a 1.6L turbo with a dual clutch transmission. The mileage was around 96,000 miles. Once on the road, it ran fine. Approximately a month later the check engine light came on and it began hesitating upon acceleration. It would change to the next gear, accelerate and slam me against the seat! Whenever I try to accelerate too fast, it hesitates and loses power until it "catches" and starts speeding up. This is very dangerous especially when accelerating from a complete stop or after a turn. It also has trouble going up a hill and has actually died out 3 times while attempting to go uphill at a low speed. I am the second owner and it is out of warranty. I have contacted the local Hyundai dealer but their shop does not have a very good reputation and is always backed up for 3+ weeks. They also charge $230 or more to hook up their code reader!! I've already taken it to 2 other shops where that was done at no charge. The code was P073F - Unable to engage gear 1. Of course the only option I've been given is to replace the transmission for $3000 or have it rebuilt for $4100. This problem makes it very dangerous to continue driving it. I get the oil changed every 5000 miles. Of course it's almost paid for but I'm afraid if I try to trade it in I'll be lucky to even get enough to pay it off. I have been endlessly researching this online for recalls, updates or remedies. I want to know if replacing the entire transmission is the only option or is it a component of the transmission or a computer module that is the cause. How do I know the new transmission won't do the same thing?

  • Summary: The vehicle has 83,000 miles. It burns through 10 quarts of oil per 5,000 miles. No oil or check engine light comes on. Twice It has been dry when having the oil changed. Additionally, the vehicle suddenly started to jerk and misfire, the check engine light came on. I was within a block of my home and was able to return home. This would have been extremely dangerous in traffic. I have changed the coils and plugs, but it continues to hesitate and run unevenly, just like so many other reports.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • VIN: KM8J33A28HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am not a mechanic, but I know that my engine consumes 5-8 quarts of oil every 3000 miles. In addition to the engine oil consumption problem, I have noticed a severe burning smell in my car cabin, especially on takeoff, but it lingers. Unfortunately, I have to breathe this in every time I drive my car, and it is making my headaches much worse. I have taken my car to a private mechanic's shop, and the mechanic noticed the problem during two previous oil changes. I have not yet taken my car to the police or insurance company. There have been no warning messages or lights illuminated on the dashboard.

Negative 2017 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

  1. Angelo Weimann 2024-11-26

The crossover I owned in 2017 was not up to my expectations. Despite being a Tuscan plus AWD with a 2.0L engine and 7-speed transmission, I experienced issues with acceleration and had to trade it in within the same year. It was not a satisfactory purchase for me.

  2. Cletus Abernathy 2024-11-04

If you are considering a Tucson, I would recommend doing some research beforehand. I personally found that moving down from a V6 (I was in a '14 Rogue before) to a 4 cyl was not the best decision as I felt like I lost a lot of pep. While the Sport drive feature on the Tucson works, it's not great. Unfortunately, I have been thoroughly disappointed in the Tucson and have been counting down the months until I can get rid of it. One thing to note is that the front passenger seat is not height adjustable, so if you sit in it, you may feel a bit low and have trouble seeing over the dash or side door panel. As for the drivers seat, I have found that when I raise it high and need to look to the right, my rear view mirror can get in the way, so I have to dip my head to make sure my view is clear. The heater is not the best either, as it takes a while to heat up and never seems to get hot. I have found that I need to have the defrosters on high in rainy, snowy or cold conditions, otherwise, the car fogs up. This can be a bit of a nuisance because I like to have the air on my feet when it's cold and I can only keep the floor feature on temporarily before the windows fog up. Additionally, the A/C isn't great and doesn't get very cold in the hot summer. Lastly, I bought a black car for the first time and I regret it because it shows every little scratch. However, I am grateful that the car has been reliable and hasn't presented any functional issues that have left me stranded.Overall, I'm not a big fan of the Tucson and I don't use the word 'hate' very often. However, I have 2 years left on my lease and I'm considering returning to Nissan, who I believe makes a higher quality car.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Hyundai Tucson with a turbo engine. I've noticed that it can hesitate a bit in traffic when turning left or right, which can be a bit scary and has led to some close calls. Unfortunately, despite taking it back to the shop multiple times, they haven't been able to find a solution for me. It's a shame, but I'm still hopeful that they'll be able to figure something out. Thanks for listening!

I really like the vehicle, it has a lot going for it as an entry-level small/mid size SUV. It looks great and runs fairly well, with reasonable maintenance costs. However, I did have one major issue with the vehicle when I was almost T-boned with my son in the car, which could have caused catastrophic injury. The vehicle comes with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT in Hyundai speak), which can be difficult to get used to. For the first two miles, it can feel a bit jumpy, but it eventually runs smoothly. I've had the vehicle in service twice with only 5100 miles on the vehicle, and while the service tech said it's not for everyone, they found no error codes and said the vehicle is fine. While this is my third Hyundai purchase since 2014, I understand that the DCT transmission may not be for everyone. Before buying, it's important to do your research and consider all factors. I typically do not leave reviews like this online, but I felt it was important to share my experience. It just might help someone out there. Buyer beware.

The 2017 Tucson Sport-Turbo was a nice vehicle, but unfortunately, it had some transmission shifting problems. When the transmission was cold, it would hesitate, stumble, and jerk from a stop. Even after warming up, it would still jerk from a start-up, making it feel like driving a standard transmission with a faulty clutch. The issue was so bad that my wife was terrified to drive the vehicle. Despite the dealer being no help with the problem, we contacted the NTSB and filed a complaint, along with many other Hyundai owners. Eventually, we were able to reach an engineer in Redondo Beach, CA, national headquarters, and informed him of the problem. He told us that they were aware of the problem and that they no longer used this transmission. He also mentioned that the dealer was now responsible for the transmission problems.

I took it for a test drive along with its sister, the Kia Sportage. In my opinion, Hyundai may have made a mistake when they switched to the 7-speed transmission. I hope Kia won't make the same mistake with their next year's model.

Hyundai has truly outdone themselves over the last decade, transforming from a budget car company to a reliable and stylish automobile manufacturer. The 2017/2018 Tucson is a prime example of this. The exterior styling is arguably the best in the small crossover segment, and the interior and safety standard features are unmatched by Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. In fact, we've purchased two Tucson's in the last 16 months, both Limited with Ultimate package, for our parents. Our Tucson's have heated and COOLED (ventilated) front leather seats, heated back seats, a navigation system with Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, a backup camera, lane departure system, blind-spot monitors, auto-braking with pedestrian detection, and HID headlights that turn with the steering wheel for better nighttime illumination. We cross-shopped Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, and Nissan Rogue, and none of them could come close to the features/price ratio that the Tucson offers. On top of all that, the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty is standard. We are especially happy with the amount of illumination those HID headlights provide during nighttime driving, as our parents are getting old and they've told us that they feel much more confident driving after sunset. Other neat little features such as keyless entry, push-button start, a power liftgate, beautiful looking wheels, panoramic moonroof, better-than-most AWD system, and Hyundai's proven reliability are icing on the cake. For just under $30k, the Hyundai Tucson Limited is going to be your best bet for the money. Update 7/9/2020: Three years in and still a pretty good little SUV. The transmission continues to be a quirky thing on both Tucson Limited. Hyundai pushed out another software update to the dealers via recall, but our VINs have not been selected for an update. The A/C on the first of the two Tucson went out at 33,000 miles, so we are now waiting for parts to come in to repair. Both vehicles get great gas mileage and looking back, it was very forward-thinking of Hyundai to put Apple Carplay in a 2017 vehicle. Our 2018 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport doesn't even have Apple CarPlay and it's a pain in the butt. Overall, I have no complaints!

I really appreciate my Hyundai Tucson, so much that I have bought 2 in the past year. After my first purchase got totaled in an accident, I bought the same exact Tucson for my replacement. I love the style, color, handling, safety, ....I love everything about this car! It's definitely the best vehicle purchase I've ever made!

I test drove several more expensive vehicles, including the Jeep Cherokee Latitude, but the Tuscon was hands down a more superior ride. The acceleration alone on the highway was my deciding factor. The 'sport' button, which increases the RPM's or lowers a gear, is a great assist in gaining speed. In fact, I leave it in 'Sport' mode around town just for the fun factor. The 60,000 mile warranty, compared to the competition's 36,000 mile warranty, was another deciding factor. The sport rims and the panoramic sunroof are nice features. This is my first Hyundai, and I think I'm now a big fan and will buy more Hyundai's in the future.

I really enjoy driving my Tuson, but I have noticed that the acceleration can be a bit laggy due to the combination of the turbo and dual clutch transmission. I have been working on finding the best way to accelerate to minimize the deadband between the transmission shifting and turbo boost. It has been a bit of a challenge, but I am confident that I can master it. I do wish that Hyundai offered an optional manual shift mode on the Dual Clutch transmission, as I think it would be fun to experiment with the gear changes myself. On the bright side, the higher gears have plenty of turbo boost which really gives you a thrilling ride (especially in sport mode). The Tuson also has a sporty and precise handling feel that I absolutely love.
