The Hyundai Tucson (/ˈtuːsɒn/; Korean: 현대 투싼) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is named after the city of Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as the Hyundai JM when it was introduced in Japan in 2004.

The second-generation model was marketed as the Hyundai ix35 in several markets, including Europe, Australia and China, before reverting to Tucson for the third generation. Since its first generation, the Tucson has been developed alongside the Kia Sportage, sharing platforms and engines.

The Tucson is the best-selling Hyundai SUV model, with more than 7 million units sold globally since it launched in 2004. Of these, 1.4 million units have been sold in Europe.

The fourth-generation model marked the switch to a mid-size car platform using the N3 platform which is shared with another three corporate siblings, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Hyundai Mufasa and the fourth-generation Kia Sorento. As of 2022, the Tucson is positioned between the Kona or Creta and the three-row Santa Fe in Hyundai's crossover SUV lineup.

Common 2010 Hyundai Tucson problems

The Hyundai Tucson, a compact crossover SUV produced since 2004, has been known for its modern and stylish design, comfortable interior, and various features, including leather upholstery, infotainment systems, and smartphone integration. It offers a range of engine options, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. While generally considered reliable, some common problems have been reported by drivers and owners of the 2010 Hyundai Tucson, which include:

Transmission shifting / gearbox issues

One of the most frequent problems reported by Tucson owners is related to transmission shifting. Common transmission issues reported with the Hyundai Tucson include rough or delayed shifting, which can lead to an unpleasant driving experience. These issues may result in jerky or jarring gear changes, making driving difficult. Transmission software recalibration is often required to address these problems, which involves updating the software at a Hyundai dealership. In some cases, complete transmission failure has also been reported, resulting in the vehicle not moving or shifting gears correctly. Hyundai has issued recalls related to transmission issues in some Tucson model years, acknowledging the problem and working to address it.

Engine failure, knocking and other noises

A serious issue known to Hyundai is the issue of engine knocking or ticking, particularly in higher mileage Tucsons over 150k miles. High mileage Tucsons are susceptible to sudden engine failure, with Hyundai recalling almost 100,000 units because of the problem. The issue was tracked down to a faulty connecting rod bearing, which affects the engine's ability to pass vehicles on the motorway or accelerate from a stop. Possible causes of this issue may be clogged fuel injectors, failing fuel pumps or sensors, airflow restrictions, or transmission problems. The problem affects higher-mileage vehicles more.

Headlights

Tucson owners frequently report problems with dim, flickering headlights and premature bulb burnouts across multiple model years. Drivers often say that the low beams aren’t enough for nighttime driving while the high beams are too bright. Possible causes are faulty headlight components, faulty seals that let water in, and issues with the bulbs used in some models.

Engine failure

Engine failure is a common problem in the Hyundai Tucson, particularly in the 2012, 2013, and 2014 model years. The issue is often caused by faulty connecting rod bearings, which can lead to catastrophic engine damage if the vehicle overheats. The problem can be difficult to diagnose, as it may require a thorough examination of the engine's mechanical components, including injectors, filters, fuel pumps, and sensors.

Transmission locks up

Transmission lock-up is another common problem reported by Tucson owners. This issue can occur in various model years, including the 2011 Tucson. The transmission may lock up while driving, causing the vehicle to suddenly stop moving. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including transmission software issues, mechanical problems, or sensor failures.

Interior problems

Interior problems are also common in the Hyundai Tucson. Drivers have reported issues with the vehicle's infotainment system, including problems with the touchscreen, navigation, and audio systems. These issues can be frustrating for drivers and may require professional repair or replacement of the affected components.

Fuel system problems

Fuel system problems are another common issue reported by Tucson owners. These problems can include issues with the fuel pump, fuel injectors, or fuel pressure regulator. Fuel system problems can affect the vehicle's performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions.

Brakes

Brakes are an essential component of any vehicle, and brake problems can be a serious safety concern. Tucson owners have reported issues with the vehicle's brakes, including problems with the brake pads, rotors, and brake lines. These issues can affect the vehicle's stopping distance and overall braking performance.

In conclusion, while the Hyundai Tucson is generally considered a reliable vehicle, some common problems have been reported by drivers and owners of the 2010 model year. These issues include transmission shifting problems, engine failure, headlight problems, engine failure, transmission locks up, interior problems, fuel system problems, and brakes. If you are considering purchasing a used Hyundai Tucson, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase. Regular maintenance and servicing can also help to prevent these issues from occurring or becoming more severe.

  • VIN: KM8JT3ACXAU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Yesterday, my wife car, suddenly started to sharply to the right, when her hold on steering wheel relaxed. I tested it. It is not an alignment problem. It is a sudden and obvious taking over of the steering by the car. I took it to my mechanic. He told me that he and none of his certified mechanics have ever seen this problem, and did not know what was wrong and I should contact Hyundai as perhaps there was a recall or service bulletin on this condition. I did that, but was told that I would have to bring it there to be diagnosed. My concern is not so much for my car. I don't know if I want to spend dealership type money to fix the car. My concern is the safety of others. My wife was traveling about 20 mph when this happened, and was able to avid hitting another car. If it happened when she was traveling 60 mph on a four lane highway, it would have been a major disaster. I felt that I needed to bring the problem to your attention, to possibly protect others. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER ADVISED THE PART NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WAS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION; THEREFORE, THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DECLINED ANY ASSISTANCE.

  • Summary: SINCE I GOT THIS VEHICLE THE GEAR SHIFT GETS STUCK. I HAVE GONE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH. IT IS A BIG HASSLE TRYING TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH LAST TWO TO THREE YEARS. I GOT THE RECALL LETTER ABOUT THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH IN 2012, BUT WHY MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT LISTED? THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN CHARGING ME EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE BEEN THERE FOR THIS CONSTANT PROBLEM. I ALMOST GOT KILL BY THE TRAIN BECAUSE OF THIS BACKLIGHT SWITCH PROBLEM. I GOT STUCK A FEET AWAY FROM THE RAIL TRACKS TWO WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS A CAR AT FRONT OF ME AND I COULDN'T MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT TO REVERSE. THE CAR DECIDED TO MOVE AT THE LAST MINUTE AND I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. THE CONTENTION BAR WAS OVER MY WINDSHIELD SO I COULDN'T MOVE FORWARD AND I COULDN'T MOVE BACKWARDS BECAUSE THE GEAR SHIFT WASN'T MOVING. I HAVE BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR FIVE TIMES AND THE LAST TWO TIMES, THEY HAVE KEPT MY CAR THERE, BUT THEY HAVEN'T EVEN TOUCHED IT. THEY HAVEN'T TOLD ME THE REASON WHY, BUT I JUST FOUND IT OUT. IT IS BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT LISTED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. DRIVING A CAR WITH THIS PROBLEM ONCE YOU APPLY THE BRAKES THE GEAR SHIFT WON'T WORK. NEITHER IN CASE YOU HAVE TO PARK OR MAKE A TURN. PICKING UP MY DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL IS A BIG PROBLEM BECAUSE ONCE I PARK, THE GEAR SHIFT DOESN'T MOVE DOWN, SO I HAVE TO TURN IT OFF UP TO THREE TIMES AND WAIT EACH TIME TWO TO THREE MINUTES UNTIL THE ENGINE RESETS ITSELF. DRIVERS BEHIND ME GET SO FRUSTRATED. WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME TO LIST MY VIN NUMBER? I AM VERY CONCERNED DRIVING THIS CAR WITH MY FAMILY.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  • Consequence: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

  • Consequence: THIS COULD LEAD TO REDUCED VISIBILITY OF THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR REFLECTOR ASSEMBLIES, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

Negative 2010 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

We purchased our new car in June of 2010. Unfortunately, at only 4300 miles, just two weeks after our first oil change, it broke down. Although the first service couldn't find the problem, it was eventually diagnosed as a fuel pump failure. After picking up the car, we experienced warning lights and the car sputtered and almost stalled, accompanied by a horrible grinding noise and white smoke from the engine. It was then diagnosed with an A/C compressor failure. We are concerned about what may come next, as a brand new car shouldn't have this many problems. We have been in a rental car for four days and counting.

I purchased a loaded limited AWD a couple of months ago, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the ride quality around town. Although, on the highway, it is not as bad. I have noticed that the 2nd to 3rd gear upshift is quite rough, but only those two gears seem to be affected. I have taken it to two dealerships, and they have acknowledged the issue, but they have also mentioned that other cars on the lot have the same shifting pattern. However, I have been driving for 21 years and have owned many cars, and I have never experienced such a rough shift unless there was an issue with the transmission or computer. Additionally, the Bluetooth connectivity is not up to the mark, and the other person on the call cannot hear me very well. I am considering exploring other options soon.

I've noticed that my temperature gauge takes about 15 minutes to reflect the actual temperature when I start driving my car. According to Hyundai tech support, this is normal and is due to the sensor they chose to install in the car. While I understand their reasoning, I can't help but feel disappointed with the quality of the sensor. The Bluetooth also seems to be affected by this issue. Additionally, my mileage averages around 18 in the city, which is lower than I expected. I was hoping it would improve after 5,000 miles, but unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. I find myself having to fill up more frequently than I would like. Overall, I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed with these aspects of the car. If I had the chance to do it over, I might consider the Honda CR-V or stick with my previous Toyota Highlander.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Tucson 2010. Living in P.R., I found that cars are generally more expensive here than in the rest of the USA. Unfortunately, the dealerships tend to only stock the basic models and then add alloy wheels, charging a premium price without including features like Bluetooth or steering wheel audio control. In fact, the basic model Tucson costs a whopping $23,195 here, and that's just for the automatic transmission and 17

I really enjoyed my car from the very beginning, even though it didn't quite get the gas mileage that was advertised. It was purchased in May 2010 and I was able to run the A/C all summer without any issues. However, after 10 months, I noticed that the entire car would shake and rattle whenever the A/C was on. It was a very strange sensation that I had never experienced before. I had to take it to the shop three times before they finally agreed to speak to the factory representative. After five days, they finally discovered that the A/C condenser was warped. Unfortunately, it is still in the shop today.

Positive 2010 Hyundai Tucson car reviews

Congratulations on your new 2010 Hyundai Tuscon! It sounds like you made a great choice. The new body design and interior are very attractive, and it's great that you were able to get all the options you wanted for a great price. It's also wonderful to hear that the dealership gave you the very highest blackbook value for your trade. The Tuscon sounds like a great car that drives like a car but allows you better visibility and a higher vantage point. It's always a pleasure to hear about positive experiences with salespeople, and it's great that the team at Hot Springs Hyundai were honest, forthright, and a pleasure to do business with. Enjoy your new car!

This is my second Tucson. I owned a 2006 Tucson for four years and it was one of the most dependable and go-in-the-snow cars I had ever owned. I'm really excited about what Hyundai has done for the Tucson style. Hopefully, it will be just as mechanically reliable as its former model.

I am so happy with my choice of the Tuscon! It looks and feels amazing. I considered a used Lexus hybrid, the Honda CRV, and a used Mercedes M class, but the Tuscon stole my heart. The gas mileage, style, and warranty were the deciding factors for me. I went with the Limited version, which has leather seats but not the premium features like a sunroof or built-in GPS. I prefer using a portable GPS anyway, so those features weren't important to me.

  4. Hugh Bins 2024-07-20

We did a lot of comparison shopping and ended up getting the limited version with multiple sun roofs and a navigation system. Once we added these extras, we found that this car offered the best value with the best mileage. We have driven 1600 miles so far, including one long trip, and we have found this car to be excellent with great mileage and a lot of nice extras. Although the rear-view through the window is somewhat limited, our model has a back-up camera which helps. Overall, we are very happy with this car.

I bought this car a little over 3 months ago to replace my Honda CR-V. I have to say, I absolutely love it! The car feels much larger than the CR-V and is incredibly comfortable for long rides. It's stylish and often gets mistaken for a high-end car. People are always asking me what kind of car it is. The ride is smooth and the handling is excellent. I appreciate the standard options that come with the car, many of which are not available in other cars. Overall, the car is small and compact on the outside, but spacious and very comfortable on the inside. It also gets decent gas mileage and has plenty of power. I highly recommend it!
