Ford Edge problems

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.
Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.
All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.
The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common Ford Edge problems
Based on complaints from owners of Ford Edge cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Issues:
- Ford Edge owners have reported various transmission problems, including transmission failure, slipping, shuddering, and jerking. The 2008 model year, in particular, had severe transmission issues, with around 20 owners experiencing transmission failure at an average of 80,000 miles. Repairing these transmission problems can be costly, with an average repair cost of almost $3,000.
- Brake Problems:
- Some Ford Edge models, especially those from 2007 to 2015, have been plagued by faulty brake boosters. This issue involves the diaphragm of the brake booster developing tears, leading to brake problems. Additionally, the 2009-2010 models faced a fuel tank defect that could pose a fire risk if left unaddressed. Ford issued a recall for these models to inspect and address the fuel tank issue.
- Power Steering Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the power steering on Ford Edge cars, often caused by a troublesome sensor. This issue can result in the steering feeling light or heavy while driving, indicating a potential problem with the power steering system. It is essential to pay attention to any unusual steering behavior during a test drive.
These common problems reported by Ford Edge owners highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a used Ford Edge to avoid potential issues and ensure a reliable driving experience.

Why did Ford discontinue the Edge?
Ford has officially declared the retirement of the Edge after the 2023 model. This decision is due to Ford's commitment to electric vehicles. As part of its long-term vision, the company aims to focus more of its resources on EV production, and the Edge needs to fit that mold.

Ford Edge 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
- VIN: 2FMPK3J91LB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Power Train has failed multiple times on this vehicle. It loses power on the highway, reverses when in drive, and does not shift down to make the vehicle slow to a safe speed. This puts me and others in danger because you can not predict that or when there will be a failure that hits a person or other car. This has been taken to a mechanic and confirmed as power train failure in a 4 year old, 100K mile car. Ford claims no recalls even though the same recall exists for other makes and models of the same kind with different VINS. Has thrown multiple codes.
Ford Edge 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 2FMPK3J99KB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission shifts very harshly from stop and go. It shakes, slips, and shutters while driving. From around 55-60 mph the car shakes and the rpm jumps around like it’s trying shift gears, occasionally the car will jump as if you’re driving on the white bumpy line. When you let off the accelerator the car shakes. When slowing down to stop, the car downshifts very harshly and makes it feel as if you’re slamming on the brakes. I’m not sure what kind of risk this could cause for me or others. Multiple dealers have said that it must be the transmission needing to be replaced. It has not been inspected by a dealer, that’s just what they’ve told me. The only warning light that has appeared a few times is a “drive not available” warning light when shifting into drive, it immediately shifts the car into park when the warning appears. The car started being jumpy and jerky shortly after being purchased in 2022 with 50,000 miles. Reverse also seems to engage harshly causing the car to make a loud pop noise and a slight jolt occurs. The vehicle now has around 78,000 miles.

The vehicle continued to emit a white smoke. The vehicle was brought to a mechanic who indicated the head gasket and/or engine needed replacement. Had been told be the mechanic they have had several over issues exactly like this one. They also indicated there was a recall and/or possible lawsuit. Ford Edge 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: 2FMPK4J97GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost has sadly caused us countless issues and extensive $ to repair. The latest issue is the 2020 investigation that revealed a design defect of the engine block and cylinder head, and coolant has been leaking and burning in the engine cylinder, which has lead to me needing a new engine. Unfortunately, the suit displays documented proof Ford knew about it and didn’t disclose it to buyers. This has lead to vast overheating, risking the vehicle catching on fire while in use, burning empty coolant, and a potential for having a blown engine on the highway. We took the car to a trusted shop when the overheating issue occurred and this was our circumstance.

Vehicle year: 2015
*New Issue - Hi there! A couple of months ago (around 6,500 miles), we had an unexpected experience with our brand new Ford Edge. It suddenly decelerated from 50 mph to 5 mph, leaving us stranded alongside the road. We were towed to the dealership where the throttle body was replaced. In the weeks leading up to this incident, we noticed changes in the car's acceleration, mainly between 40-60mph. We thought it was the transmission and took it to the dealership, but they said they could find nothing wrong. Currently, the car behaves like an older car with a fuel pump issue when it comes to accelerating - it's sluggish, feels like it has In our pursuit of a resolution, we had a conversation with the Ford Regional Customer Service Manager (866-631-3788) who informed us that Ford will not repurchase this structurally defective vehicle. They insist that our VIN# is not included in the leak issue, despite the fact that the saturated interior of our vehicle suggests otherwise. If we decide to sell this vehicle in the future, we will have to disclose to potential buyers the same defect that Ford concealed from us, and suffer a financial loss. This situation puts us in a bind in many ways. We have only made one car payment to our bank to date. Will this vehicle even last for 59 more payments? Apart from the financial repercussions, there are health and safety concerns. Our son has severe asthma and allergies, including a documented allergy to mold. How long was this leaky vehicle exposed to the elements in a dealership lot before we purchased it? And what is lurking inside the moist carpeting and overhead material, the cracks and crevices? We expressed these valid concerns to Ford, as well as to the dealership, but to no avail. They refuse to buy back their defective new vehicle, insisting their only obligation is to repair it and Last we heard, our vehicle was taken to a glass shop where the windshield was resealed, but unfortunately, it failed to stop the leaking. After that, it was taken to a body shop where a new windshield was recommended and ordered. However, we were disappointed to find our new vehicle, leaks and all, sitting uncovered in the dealership lot, exposed to the pouring rain and sleet. It had been there for days awaiting the arrival of the new windshield. At the very least, they could have covered it with a tarp. We will keep you updated on the situation. UPDATE (4/7/16): A 'pin-hole size leak in the body caulk of the upper right passenger window' was discovered and filled. A glass company came again, squirted window cleaner and blew air from inside the vehicle. The leak revealed itself on the outside where the glass cleaner started bubbling. The dealership said water was in the carpet and flooring, and on some wiring, but the vehicle subsequently passed the leak test and water should no longer enter the interior. Ford is also replacing the right and middle tail lights. We hope that no further water damage surfaces in the future from this leak. Our vehicle should be ready by Friday, April 8th!

Vehicle year: 2014
I've had my 2013 Ford Edge since June 2013 and I've traveled from Ohio to South Carolina 4 times to see my granddaughter, daughter, and son-in-law. I couldn't be happier with the comfortable ride. Although it took me a little bit of time to get used to the My Touch, I haven't had any problems with it. I would recommend going to the Ford website and watching the tutorials, as well as checking out some of the helpful YouTube videos. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle!

Vehicle year: 2008
Your vehicle has been amazing! With 180,000 miles on it, it has had no major mechanical problems. I did have to do the rear wheel bearings at 150k, but besides that and your typical brakes, tires, and tune ups, the car has been flawless. It has good power and an excellent AWD system, which makes it perfect for northern Wisconsin winters. Although gas mileage isn't great, averaging just over 21 mpg with aggressive driving, it's worth it for the quality of the vehicle. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a well-built AWD crossover.

This midsized SUV is an absolute joy to drive and own! It's hard to believe that it's a 335 HP/ 380lb/ft AWD vehicle. I've had mine for 6 months now and the fit and finish are superb. It's quick, handles well for its size, and the brakes are magnificent. The upgraded suspension is more for comfort, but it has very little body lean in a corner. Living in an area with speed humps, I'm amazed at how well the suspension absorbs them. The Edge has so much room, and the panoramic roof option feels like having a convertible without having to deal with hot/humid Florida air getting in. If you want that, the sunroof opening is huge. This isn't a vehicle for those who want a

I purchased this vehicle in June with high hopes, but unfortunately, I have been disappointed with its comfort. If you are over 5'10, you may find the seat bottom cushions too short to offer support for longer legs. Additionally, the footwell for the driver is short on space, making driving uncomfortable. The gas mileage has also been disappointing, with only 18 mpg for a 6 cylinder engine. However, I have found relief when using cruise control on the highway. Despite these issues, I am grateful for the time I have spent with this vehicle, but I am now looking for a new one.

I purchased the Edge because I was drawn to its stylish design and the Ford brand. Unfortunately, within the first year, I experienced some issues with the dual roof, which broke twice, and the car stalled twice, requiring a new part. I have also noticed that it can be sluggish when driving uphill. While I have had some problems with my specific vehicle, I do not believe that my experience is representative of all Edge models. However, I must admit that my opinion of the car has decreased from a 10 to a 5 due to these issues. I have shared my experience with my friends, but I understand that everyone's needs and experiences are different. Currently, my dual roof is stuck again, which is disappointing.

I really like this vehicle, but there are a couple of things that bother me. Firstly, the headlights are quite small, and I find myself having to use my brights to see properly at night. Secondly, living in Wisconsin, I've noticed that snow builds up around the back wheel, which is a common issue with all vehicles. However, the doors are designed to wrap under the rocker panels and freeze shut, which can be frustrating. The back doors are especially bad because the frozen ice/snow mix in your wheel well is completely frozen, making it impossible to open the doors. Despite this, I still enjoy the car and have decided to keep it instead of trading it in. However, I do hope that Ford addresses this issue in the next model. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Vehicle year: 2018
I purchased a 2018 Ford Edge SEL with the 2.0 Eco Boost Turbo and unfortunately, it started having issues at 62,000 miles. After taking it to my trusted local mechanic, I learned that I needed a complete engine replacement. Although it was a bitter pill to swallow, I decided to sell the car and move on. While it's disappointing that there isn't a recall for this issue, I understand that it has to be a safety situation for a car manufacturer to issue one. I enrolled in a class action lawsuit to try and do something about it, but I'm not expecting much. In any case, I wanted to share my experience with others so they can make an informed decision when purchasing a car. Thanks for listening!

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your vehicle. It sounds like you have invested a lot of money into it and it is disappointing that the technology has not been working as expected. I hope that Ford will be able to provide a solution for you soon with their upcoming update. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
