Ford Edge problems

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.
Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.
All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.
The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common Ford Edge problems
Based on complaints from owners of Ford Edge cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Issues:
- Ford Edge owners have reported various transmission problems, including transmission failure, slipping, shuddering, and jerking. The 2008 model year, in particular, had severe transmission issues, with around 20 owners experiencing transmission failure at an average of 80,000 miles. Repairing these transmission problems can be costly, with an average repair cost of almost $3,000.
- Brake Problems:
- Some Ford Edge models, especially those from 2007 to 2015, have been plagued by faulty brake boosters. This issue involves the diaphragm of the brake booster developing tears, leading to brake problems. Additionally, the 2009-2010 models faced a fuel tank defect that could pose a fire risk if left unaddressed. Ford issued a recall for these models to inspect and address the fuel tank issue.
- Power Steering Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the power steering on Ford Edge cars, often caused by a troublesome sensor. This issue can result in the steering feeling light or heavy while driving, indicating a potential problem with the power steering system. It is essential to pay attention to any unusual steering behavior during a test drive.
These common problems reported by Ford Edge owners highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a used Ford Edge to avoid potential issues and ensure a reliable driving experience.
Does the Ford Edge have any problems?
Faulty airbags, bad windshield seals, and fuel tank defect are some of the major issues reported by Ford Edge owners through the years.
Is the Ford Edge a reliable vehicle?
The Ford Edge Reliability Rating is 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 11th out of 26 for midsize SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $611 which means it has average ownership costs. The frequency and severity of repairs are both fairly average when compared with all other vehicles.
What years are worst for a Ford Edge?
Q: What are the Ford Edge years to avoid when looking for a used vehicle? A: The Edge years to specifically avoid due to reported reliability issues include 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. These model years are known for their transmission, engine, and brake problems, among other concerns.
Why did Ford discontinue the Edge?
Ford has officially declared the retirement of the Edge after the 2023 model. This decision is due to Ford's commitment to electric vehicles. As part of its long-term vision, the company aims to focus more of its resources on EV production, and the Edge needs to fit that mold.

Ford Edge 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
- VIN: 2FMPK3J91LB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Power Train has failed multiple times on this vehicle. It loses power on the highway, reverses when in drive, and does not shift down to make the vehicle slow to a safe speed. This puts me and others in danger because you can not predict that or when there will be a failure that hits a person or other car. This has been taken to a mechanic and confirmed as power train failure in a 4 year old, 100K mile car. Ford claims no recalls even though the same recall exists for other makes and models of the same kind with different VINS. Has thrown multiple codes.
Ford Edge 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 2FMPK3J99KB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission shifts very harshly from stop and go. It shakes, slips, and shutters while driving. From around 55-60 mph the car shakes and the rpm jumps around like it’s trying shift gears, occasionally the car will jump as if you’re driving on the white bumpy line. When you let off the accelerator the car shakes. When slowing down to stop, the car downshifts very harshly and makes it feel as if you’re slamming on the brakes. I’m not sure what kind of risk this could cause for me or others. Multiple dealers have said that it must be the transmission needing to be replaced. It has not been inspected by a dealer, that’s just what they’ve told me. The only warning light that has appeared a few times is a “drive not available” warning light when shifting into drive, it immediately shifts the car into park when the warning appears. The car started being jumpy and jerky shortly after being purchased in 2022 with 50,000 miles. Reverse also seems to engage harshly causing the car to make a loud pop noise and a slight jolt occurs. The vehicle now has around 78,000 miles.

The vehicle continued to emit a white smoke. The vehicle was brought to a mechanic who indicated the head gasket and/or engine needed replacement. Had been told be the mechanic they have had several over issues exactly like this one. They also indicated there was a recall and/or possible lawsuit. Ford Edge 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: 2FMPK4J97GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost has sadly caused us countless issues and extensive $ to repair. The latest issue is the 2020 investigation that revealed a design defect of the engine block and cylinder head, and coolant has been leaking and burning in the engine cylinder, which has lead to me needing a new engine. Unfortunately, the suit displays documented proof Ford knew about it and didn’t disclose it to buyers. This has lead to vast overheating, risking the vehicle catching on fire while in use, burning empty coolant, and a potential for having a blown engine on the highway. We took the car to a trusted shop when the overheating issue occurred and this was our circumstance.

I had a 2017 Titanium model that I absolutely loved. The mileage was getting a little high, so I traded it in for the 2020 version. I think the old one may have been a little more comfortable, but the tech upgrades and better fuel efficiency balances that out easily. I love the new headlight system on the new one and can see much better at night. I'm so glad I made the trade for the 2020!

The Edge is an exceptional vehicle with a great SYNC system that provides an added layer of safety. I had an accident once, and the 911 call was made in less than 5 seconds. The Edge's highway MPG is impressive for a vehicle of its size, averaging 24-25 mpg at 70-75 mph. In town, it averages 18-19 mpg. The interior quality is outstanding, with plush leather seats that are heated to perfection and strong air conditioning. The Edge has plenty of power, smooth shifting, comfortable seating, and a great view. The only downside is that it can be challenging to judge its width when entering a garage, and I've had a few near misses with the mirrors.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Edge! One thing we noticed is that the liftgate can be quite heavy, so we definitely agree that opting for the power liftgate is a good idea. Additionally, the Edge is a larger car than it appears, so it's important to keep that in mind when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces. We appreciate your comparison of the Edge to other models and your research on the seats. It's great to hear that you've had no issues with rattles or squeaks, and that the audio is satisfactory for your needs. We understand that setting a budget is important, and it sounds like you made a wise decision. The car handles well and is quick enough for freeway driving, and we're glad to hear that the towing package has been useful for you. The backup camera is a nice touch, and we're happy to hear that it's been helpful. Thank you for your review and for choosing the Edge!If you haven't owned a Ford product lately, you'll notice a large expanse of glass in front of you. However, once you get used to it, it makes the car feel more open. I think the SEL version should have had a memory seat for the driver, not just power, and also a power seat for the passenger. The rear air vent into the passenger compartment works well, and the rear seats have some recline to them. Just FYI, when the rear seats are folded down, they are not completely flat. Our mileage is good - we're not leadfoots, nor are we featherfoots - it did take a little while for the mileage to kick in - but we average about 26 around town and about 32 on the freeway at about 70 MPH. There are no rattles or squeaks, and overall I think Ford really did a nice job - especially with the design. I would definitely purchase this car again.

The Horn model could benefit from some improvements. The engine appears unfinished without a cover to mask its roughness. Additionally, the navigation system requires updating. Furthermore, the back-up camera takes too long to activate, causing me to begin reversing before it engages.

We purchased a 2012 Edge Sport with 20k miles and have been driving it for 1.5 years. During this time, we have taken the car to the dealer for maintenance several times, including an alignment, new tires, battery replacement, throttle fuel line repair, brake booster replacement, panoramic roof lining, and LED bulb replacement in the taillights. The dealer is now requesting $215 to update and clear code U0401. While we appreciate the SUV's interior, features, and appearance, we are concerned about its reliability. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in our ability to address any future issues that may arise.

Although I have had some issues with my Edge, I must say that it is a fun car to drive when it's not in the garage. The AWD is great in the winter, and the engine is powerful. It's also relatively quiet. However, I have experienced some problems with the transmission and brakes, and the car tends to pull to the left for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, the dealer and Ford have not been very supportive, and I have had to have the transmission seal and PTU Assembly replaced multiple times. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Edge.

Good car overall! I bought it new and have owned it for 4 years now. It's really pleasant to drive, but I do think the interior design could be improved. However, I saw a 2012 model and they made a lot of great improvements! The gas mileage is a bit worse than advertised, which is the biggest drawback for me. According to the computer, I get 16-17 mixed from day 1.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your 2013 Limited with 301A package and other features. It must have been frustrating to have the tire alert come on just two days after purchasing the car, but I am glad to hear that there was nothing wrong with the tires. However, it is concerning to hear about the violent lunge you experienced while driving at around 40 mph, and the subsequent difficulty downshifting into first gear with clunking. I understand that the service team found metal in the transmission and attempted to repair the valve body, but the issue still persists. It is unfortunate that your Edge has been with Ford service for 12 days now and they have not been able to fix it yet. I can imagine that this has been a difficult experience for you, especially since you have only owned the Edge for 51 days. Please know that we are here to support you and will do everything we can to help resolve this issue. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I have a 2011 Edge with all the bells and whistles and I absolutely love the technology. However, during a trip to the NC mountains, the car suddenly quit on me while I was driving on a lonely mountain road after a 3-hour interstate drive. I was able to find a safe area to pull off the road, but it was a bit nerve-wracking since there were drop-offs on both sides. As I coasted back down the mountain, the engine idled roughly. I eventually stopped in a church parking lot and turned off the engine. On a whim, I turned the car back on and it fired up normally. This quitting at 70mph happened twice more on my way home to Florida, both times in dangerous spots where I couldn't pull off. When I returned home, I informed a dealer of what I had heard from another dealer - that it might be a faulty throttle sensor - even though there was no record of it in the computer. They finally replaced it and it's been running fine ever since.
