The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2018 Ford Edge problems

The 2018 Ford Edge has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to wiper motor failures, dead batteries, and coolant leak issues.

Wiper motor failures are a common complaint among 2018 Ford Edge owners, with issues arising around 15,000 miles.

Dead batteries are another issue that some 2018 Ford Edge owners have experienced within the first 30,000 miles.

Coolant leak issues are a more serious, albeit rare, problem found on some 2018 Edge models with the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, typically around 70,000 miles. The head gasket in a few models has been known to fail, allowing coolant to leak and get into the cylinder. If not addressed promptly, this issue can lead to engine damage.

In addition to these common problems, the 2018 Ford Edge has been subject to five recalls, covering issues such as the torque converter connection, front brake hoses, and alternator cables. These issues will be fixed by Ford for free on affected models.

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Edge is expected to last around 200,000 miles, with annual maintenance costs similar to other midsize SUVs.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J92JB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car was leaking coolant into the engine not only causing the engine to fail and need replacing, but the engine overheated, causing me to have to pull over on the side of the road. It happened a few time before the issue could be found. The dealer finally found the cause of the overheating was due to coolant intruding into the engine causing cylinders to misfire.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • VIN: 2FMPK4J99JB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Recently, I had to replace the engine on my 2018 Ford Edge with only 73k miles on it. I spoke to an agent on July 10th with Case #: [XXX]. The total engine replacement cost was $7,700. Ford only covered $3,000, leaving me with the remaining balance of $4,700. I first noticed my check engine light was on in July, so I took it to the dealership (Tony Betten Ford, Grand Rapids, MI) to find out the engine block was cracked and needed to be replaced. The powertrain warranty only covers 5 years or 60k miles, and my vehicle is 6 years old with just over 73k miles, so it did not qualify. I should not have to replace an entire engine at this mileage, especially since other automakers' warranties are upwards of 100k miles. I've taken good care of this vehicle and bought it brand new (in 2018) and would expect better of a Ford Vehicle. Coincidentally, my brother also owns a 2018 Ford Edge. He had the EXACT SAME issue with his Edge around the same mileage (70k miles) and had to replace his engine too- This is clearly a known issue on these vehicles. Also, this is a current recall and known issue on 1.5L engine, so it's clearly an issue on 2L engine too. For the safety of all 2L engine owners, this should absolutely be a full recall. I've been a lifelong Ford vehicle owner and driver and I would hope the customer service from Ford would be to treat this as a recall and take care of this. • Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at unknown speeds, the engine warning light illuminated. The driver checked the oil and noticed a milky substance in the oil. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the head gasket was blown. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who diagnosed it using a microscopic camera and determined that there was a notch in the base of the engine that caused the failure. The mechanic recommended that the engine be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, and informed the contact that there was no warranty coverage on the vehicle for the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-13
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J93JB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle started giving red overheating signals to the dash. I put in coolant. A week later it happened again and the car would only go 5 MPH. I called a mechanic and was told that this EcoBoost 2.0L was defective and that is was very common for the head gaskets to fail and poor coolant into the block. I had the vehicle towed to this mechanic and he confirmed the engine needed to be replaced. He quoted repairs at $8,000. I called FORD Motor Co direct and they told me in order to get help with repairs I had to take it to a FORD Dealer and get it evaluated. I had it towed once again to the local Dealership. They evaluated the vehicle and stated that the engine and turbo were both defective and it would be $9,000 to repair. They told me that this vehicle would definitely catch on fire if I had driven it after the failure. FORD is now denying any help with repairs and told me good luck. This is a safety hazard to my life and wellbeing and I feel FORD is negligant.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 2FMPK3K99JB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I started seeing a Check Engine light (CEL) on the dash of my 2018 Ford Edge Titanium (approx. 95k miles) and also noticed that the car was misfiring during acceleration. I took the car to a mechanic who found error code P0303. The mechanic subsequently found a cracked spark plug in the 3rd cylinder and I directed them to replace all 4 spark plugs. CEL came back within a week (verified same code) and so I replaced all 4 firing coils but the CEL still came back (this time flashing). After taking the car into a local Ford Dealer for service, I was informed by dealer that the car fell under TSB 11-2229 (leaking coolant into cylinders) and that the only recourse was to replace the engine block. The leaking coolant could have caused the car to seize up while in operation (I believe this is why the CEL was flashing instead of steady on) and that if I was at highway speeds when the engine seized then this would have been catastrophic.

Negative 2018 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Kaleigh Witting 2024-09-12

After buying the car, I noticed that the backup camera is quite small and difficult to see. I'm worried that if I tried to use it, I might get into an accident!

  2. Jennings Satterfield 2024-08-09

As the sole owner of a 2018 Ford Edge, I diligently serviced my vehicle at the same dealership and on schedule. Unfortunately, at 70,000 miles, the engine failed and required replacement, with no possibility of repair. Despite the fact that my warranty had expired at 60,000 miles, Ford did not provide any assistance or resolution. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle or Ford's service.

  3. Barrett Gibson 2024-08-06

I had the opportunity to drive a 2018 Edge with a base engine and front-wheel drive from Colorado to California, including high altitude and snowy/icy conditions. Unfortunately, the base engine struggled at altitude (6900 feet) and shifting performance was poor, which made the vehicle feel sluggish. Additionally, the car's light weight made it difficult to navigate through a few inches of snow, requiring some extra effort to get it moving. The defroster also had some trouble clearing the front windshield at 5 degrees external temperature. However, the seats were comfortable and heated, and the climate control was adequate. Although the electronics interface had some issues connecting to an Android phone, it worked well with an iPhone. While the base model may not be the best option for cold weather driving, it performed well on dry interstates and had good handling at speed. Overall, it was a decent car for flatland dry conditions.

I've been driving my 2018 Edge Sport for about a year now. While the 2.7 litre V6 engine is certainly fast, I have noticed a few downsides. The interior feels a bit cheap and the front seats aren't very comfortable. Additionally, the fake engine noises that are pumped through the cabin speakers can be a bit overwhelming. When compared to some of its competitors, the Edge Sport falls short in terms of interior quality. It would have been great if Ford had invested in a high-quality exhaust system instead of resorting to these cheap tricks. Overall, I think there's room for improvement, but the Edge Sport is still a decent car for the price.

The flywheel broke twice, once at 48000 miles and a second time at 68000 miles. Despite Auto Nation attributing it to bad luck, it is clear that there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Positive 2018 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Jeffery Strosin 2025-01-02

Our Edge has been everything we hoped for. Although we do wish the mileage was a little better, it's still okay for the size of the car. We're thrilled with our purchase one year in, and two years later, we're still just as happy. To be honest, it only has a little over 14,000 miles on it now, but they have been trouble-free. We follow the service recommendations in the manual.

The new ST is just a few months away from release, and Ford dealers are offering aggressive pricing on the sport model, making it a great time to buy. I was able to receive a substantial discount from the dealer, thanks to additional car show incentives and it being the last day of the month. I purchased a fully loaded Sport with every possible option, and after 6 months, I am fairly pleased with the car. Everything works as advertised, and the vehicle has many thoughtful convenience touches. While the interior refinement is not as good as I would have liked, it is still good for the price. Here are some things I like about the car: (1) The sporty appearance is fantastic, especially in black with black painted 21-inch wheels. (2) It is a very fast vehicle, easily reaching below 6 seconds in the 0 to 60 measurement. The acceleration, especially in sports mode, is effortless and makes it easy to move in and out of traffic at any speed. (3) The panoramic sunroof and power sun shades are gorgeous and really brighten things up. (4) The seats are at a perfect height, and the step-in height is low. My arthritic mother with bad knees and hips has a difficult time climbing into many medium-sized SUVs, but has no problems getting in and out of the Edge. Conversely, sedans also give her problems because she sits too low, so she has a difficult time getting out of the seat. The Edge seems to be perfect for her. (5) The vehicle is very quiet with little engine or wind noise. There is a little road noise over some surfaces. (6) There is a great deal of cargo space and room for rear passengers. It has way more room than compact SUVs but is still small enough for easy entry and for fitting in a small garage. (7) All the gadgets are great, including blind spot, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist, Apple CarPlay, hands-free liftgate, and automatic parallel and perpendicular parking. The dash display features two color graphical displays surrounding the speedometer, and the Sync 3 system is very responsive (touch sensitive). The parking aids are a great help. Although the vehicle is quite wide and the steering radius is large, making it difficult to judge where the front of the vehicle is, the cameras (front and rear) and the 12 parking sensors are a tremendous aid once you get used to them. The sensors do respond slowly so you have to park slowly for them to be effective. A surround view system would still be preferable. The Sony stereo system is actually pretty good and well above average. It is nice that it still has a CD player also. The cooled seats have been a blessing in the summer. The air conditioning is very powerful and works quickly. The gas mileage is good, especially for a vehicle of this size and level of performance. So far I'm getting over 23 mpg, with about 70% freeway miles. It is actually better than EPA rated. Also, I can use regular gas. However, there are a few things that could be improved. The quality of the steering wheel leather is really poor. It is probably very durable but it feels very rough and out of place in a nearly $50000 vehicle. The turning radius is pretty poor and makes parking harder than it needs to be. The dash is really gigantic and somewhat unattractive. There is too much hard plastics in the center console. The vehicle is really wide and the turning radius is only so-so. It's hard to tell where the front bumper is. There is a bit of a learning curve with such a huge amount of tech. The interior is very monochromatic so it's a little on the dull side. The seats could be better. It can be hard to find a comfortable seating position even though it is 10 way adjustable. The seats are a little too narrow, they cannot go as low as I would like, and thigh support is somewhat lacking.I recently had my first maintenance at 5000 miles, even though the recommended service is at 10000 miles. Ford has divided its service into Quick Lane for routine maintenance and everything else. The Quick Lane does not require appointments, but even with 10 lanes, the wait time was quite long, even early in the morning. However, the service was very affordable, and I have not had any maintenance issues except for a cracked side window due to a rock. Although the interior is not as refined and luxurious as other luxury vehicles in the 50000 to 60000 range, I think it's a good deal if you can get a good discount like I did (about $40000), especially when you compare it to a fully loaded compact SUV like the Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4, which can cost up to $35000. Regarding the IIHS safety ratings, they criticized the headlights, but I found the HID headlights in the Sport to be very powerful and shine a long way. I suppose they found the glare to other drivers objectionable.

This car is such a pleasant surprise! It's incredibly comfortable, convenient, and feels like a luxury SUV. I recently switched to this vehicle after driving a BMW X3 M for a long time, and I absolutely love it!! I highly recommend it for the price point. In my opinion, the black and silver color combination looks far more chic than other colors. If you're considering this car, I suggest opting for the nav package and leather seats!

Hi there! I noticed that the back window doesn't roll down and the rear windows only go 3/4 of the way down. Is there anything I can do to help?

  5. Nathan Reichel 2024-10-20

Ford can build and sell a $40,000 car with fully functional rear windows. As a confident consumer, I always check all aspects of a car before making a purchase.
