ford logo

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2020 Ford Edge problems

The 2020 Ford Edge has several common problems reported by owners, which include transmission hesitation, rodents eating soy-based wiring, and lunging forward with auto stop-start.

The most widespread complaint from 2020 Ford Edge owners is the transmission hesitating while changing gears.

Another problem reported by Ford Edge owners is rodents eating soy-based wiring.

While these problems are common, they are similar to those found in other midsize SUVs, and the repair costs are average.

In summary, the 2020 Ford Edge has common problems with the transmission hesitating while changing gears, rodents eating soy-based wiring, and lunging forward with auto stop-start. These issues are similar to those found in other midsize SUVs, and the repair costs are average. Ford has released software updates to improve the transmission's performance, and dealerships usually install them for free. Rodents eating soy-based wiring can be prevented by parking inside overnight or installing a strobe light if parking outside. Software updates to the safety system improve the performance of the auto stop-start function, and dealerships usually install these updates for free. The 2020 Ford Edge has three recalls, with the most serious one being for the rear drive unit, which may not have enough fluid, causing it to seize up and fail. Ford will add fluid to affected models for free.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J91LB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Power Train has failed multiple times on this vehicle. It loses power on the highway, reverses when in drive, and does not shift down to make the vehicle slow to a safe speed. This puts me and others in danger because you can not predict that or when there will be a failure that hits a person or other car. This has been taken to a mechanic and confirmed as power train failure in a 4 year old, 100K mile car. Ford claims no recalls even though the same recall exists for other makes and models of the same kind with different VINS. Has thrown multiple codes.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J95LB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle sputtered abnormally. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque converter had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K92LB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Forward Collision Warning system became inoperative because of a failed electronic module. The dealership indicated that the self test ipma code u3009-49 test diagnostic called for the ipma replacement and programing. The failure of this component endangers pedestrians, other vehicles and passengers by failing to stop the vehicle when an imminent collision is about to occur. Given the 63,000 kilometres of this vehicle when the module failed, its expected life of 250,000 kilometres, the cost of replacing this component during its life, at more than 20% of the purchase price of the vehicle, is ridiculously high.

STEERING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
  • VIN: 2FMPK4J91LB
  • Components: STEERING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Forward collision warning stopped working which in turn caused the cruise control to not work. Then the PSCM (power steering control module) just went out all at once. Was driving and it showed warning on the dash. I drove on and parked. When I went to start back, it started fine but couldn’t move steering wheel. I’m seeing this has been a problem with other owners and the same year model. Ford has done a recall on edge for years around 2020 but not that particular year. Gonna cost $2772.59 to fix at dealership. Always owned ford but very disappointed how this happened with very little warning at all. If it had locked up while I was driving it would have been a major accident.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J97LB

Took my 2020 Ford Edge to my local Ford Dealer and they Updated the Software to the Transmission per TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 8F35 Transmission. At first it seemed better, but the Surging/Bucking/Jerking quickly came back. Took my Edge back to the Ford Dealership once again but they didn't do anything literally scratching their heads wondering themselves what's up with these Edges transmission.

The vehicle would not reverse out of driveway the next day. Reverse camera engaged, but no movement. The vehicle the illuminated a message of “SHIFT SYS FAULT. Service Required”. I had the vehicle towed to a repair facility for inspection. The Master ASE certified technician found that the fluid smelled burned, but there was not excessive metal shavings in fluid. He determined that the transmission had an internal failure and recommended replacement of transmission. This transmission has 123,000 miles on it. Transmission fluid was manually drained and filled at 119,500 with the manufacturer’s recommended “MOTORCRAFT MERCON ULV AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID #XT12QULV”. POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-04
  • VIN: 2FMPK3G98LB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: No warning lamps came on but while crossing after stopping at a stop sign the car was jerking and did not want to accelerate almost causing me to get hit by another car. This issue has been present since around 45k miles. I’m currently at 85k on odometer. This was the first time I realized how dangerous this can be. I followed all traffic laws and due to the sluggishness of acceleration due to the jerking I was nearly hit. I went to the dealership and they said it was the torque converter gone bad. The same issue that has been the cause of recall on almost every other model of the same year, the 2020 Ford Edge. This has been ongoing issue for Ford because my mother has a 2016 Ford Escape that was recalled for the torque converter. This is costing me a few thousand dollars to repair since they haven’t recalled my particular vin. This will be the reason I never buy a Ford again!!!!!

  • VIN: 2FMPK4J95LB

Hundreds of similar complaints on forums online for 2019-2022 Ford Edge's with the 2.0L engine. Ford has still not produced a solution, and multiple dealers (per forum discussions) have suggested replacing transmissions and other parts to fix the issue with no success. Seems like Ford is stonewalling its customers despite this known and wide spread issue which seems to occur between 55,000-80,000 miles (when their warranty conveniently ends at 60,000 miles).

Negative 2020 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Shaun Roberts 2025-06-18

Although I love my ST model, I have been experiencing some issues with the rear tailgate. Despite having it serviced at the dealer five times in the past seven months, the problem persists. It is frustrating to have to deal with this issue repeatedly. Additionally, I have noticed some other warning messages, such as the hazard light turning on as I got on the freeway and the car brakes turning on by themselves with a message about a potential collision. These issues occurred even though there was no apparent cause for concern. I am confident that the dealer will be able to address these issues and provide a satisfactory solution.

  2. Conner Beahan 2025-06-16

Unfortunately, many owners with the 2.0 engine are facing a hefty repair bill due to a factory defect in the casting of the engine block. This defect causes the engine to fail at any mileage or time, without any apparent reason. Water seeps into the cylinder and the engine fails, leaving the owner with a big bill. In this case, the repair cost was $7000, and the car has been sitting at the Ford dealership for a month, as the engines are on back order with no release date. We understand how frustrating this situation can be, and we hope that Ford will take responsibility for this issue soon.

  3. Santiago Moore 2025-06-11

I purchased a 2020 Edge brand new and used it for a year, putting 86,000 miles on it, all of which were highway miles. Recently, I took it to the dealer to diagnose a coolant leak and was informed that the engine is leaking coolant on the head and needs to be replaced. The dealer quoted me a cost of $8,000 to $9,000 for the replacement. Despite the dealer informing me that Ford is aware of the issue and would replace the motor if I had under 60,000 miles, I have lost faith in Ford SUVs and will not be purchasing one again.

  4. Malcolm O'Connell 2025-01-20

I regret purchasing a brand new 2020 Ford Edge due to transmission issues that have not been acknowledged or addressed. The car jerks and hesitates between gears, particularly at speeds of 0-35mph and around slow, wide turns, which is both concerning and disappointing given the high cost of the vehicle. While the interior is nice, it is overshadowed by the poor driving experience. Unfortunately, the manufacturer's solution of 'driving it hard' is not a satisfactory resolution. As a result, I have lost faith in Ford and will not be purchasing from them again. I plan to trade in the car as soon as possible.

  5. Franz Parker 2025-01-06

I purchased this 2020 model in March 2021. The car is quite fast and handles corners well. As an added bonus, my wife and I were able to enjoy a one-day driving experience in Asheville, NC, which was both enjoyable and free with our purchase! While I have never had to have the car towed, I have had to take it in for warranty repairs about six times. However, O'Brien Ford in Shelbyville, KY has been very responsive in addressing these repairs. The repairs included a leaking turbo oil line at 600 miles, difficulty maintaining coolant levels (which was eventually resolved by replacing the radiator after almost a year), and a drivetrain light that would randomly come on (which was somehow repaired after the first year). Recently, the temperature dropped to -7 deg F, causing the windshield wiper motors to fail. However, both were replaced under warranty. I have owned about 30 cars, some costing around $100, and have never had the windshield wipers fail before. Overall, it's a pretty decent car if you don't factor in the 18 hours I've had to spend waiting for repairs at the dealership.

Positive 2020 Ford Edge car reviews

Congratulations on your new 2019 Edge ST! With the end of year deals, you were able to get a well-optioned ST for the price of a 4 Cyl model. The power is outstanding and the Co-Pilot 360+ feature is impressive, allowing the car to drive itself like a Tesla. The sport seats are also very comfortable, similar to those found in a Volvo. As someone who used to be a track driving instructor and is used to 1.0+ G cornering, I was pleasantly surprised by the handling of this car despite its size, weight, and height. Additionally, the car was built in the last 60 days and it seems that the transmission software has been updated as it is very responsive in both manual and automatic modes.

This ST replaces our 2018 3.5 Edge Titanium and offers a huge improvement in highway performance over previous versions. The 335 HP 2.7 V6 sets the ST apart from the rest of the middle size & price range crossovers that continue to grow in size but not in power (unless you go electric). The previous incarnation with the 3.5 strained on long grades at speeds much above 65, often downshifting and screaming at over 4,000 RPM to maintain speed while in cruise control. This one breezes along with ease and while it produces an additional 55 HP over the 3.5, it actually gets a couple of more MPG in the process - a nice plus given the ridiculously small 18 gallon gas tank. Comfort in the ST seats is also an improvement over the Titanium it replaced. Better side support and seats that seem to produce more heat when activated. One of the main reasons we stuck with another Edge was the simplicity of using the Sync system and the fact the infotainment system hasn't been relocated to extend above the dash in the center stack. Large center screens that look like ipads glued to the top of the dash continue to be a non-starter in our household, automatically eliminating a lot of otherwise decent vehicles. Other improvements include the adaptive headlamps - they seem to illuminate the road much better than any previous Edge we've owned (this is our 4th one), easy to use and non-obtrusive round gear selector that takes up less of the center console, and the new Ford Pass app that connects your car's functions with your phone. Minuses include a more difficult to access foot operated tailgate, the loss of the covered storage area on top of the dash, and a ridiculous tray inside the center console that requires complete removal in order to access the large compartment below - the very first thing we did was pitch that!! Overall, it's a pleasant and quick ride, but the $50K price tag is a bit hard to swallow. Our experience with our Ford dealer has been great and we found that the Ford Edge meets our needs better than other cars we considered. We decided to purchase instead of lease since there were no real savings in leasing this model. We've owned six Fords in the past and have found them to be very reliable, with only a couple of overnight service stays required, but loaners were supplied in both cases. If you're looking for a more powerful car, we recommend the ST with the V6, as every other Edge model is now only available with the 2.0 4 cyl. engine which can be sluggish at highway speeds.

I had a 2017 Titanium model that I absolutely loved. The mileage was getting a little high, so I traded it in for the 2020 version. I think the old one may have been a little more comfortable, but the tech upgrades and better fuel efficiency balances that out easily. I love the new headlight system on the new one and can see much better at night. I'm so glad I made the trade for the 2020!

Congratulations on your new 2020 Edge ST! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new ride and that it's living up to your expectations. As a loyal Ford customer, it's wonderful to see that you've found a vehicle that meets your needs and desires. While you've mentioned a few minor issues, it's great to know that they can be easily addressed by the dealership and warranty. Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendation of the 401A package. It's always helpful to hear from satisfied customers like you. Enjoy your new ride! It's a bit pricey, but definitely worth it, especially with the rebates and incentives Ford offers. The panoramic sunroof, which is available either a-la-carte or in the 401A, is an amazing addition to a vehicle of this size and class. You almost break your neck trying to turn around and see how far back it stretches, and the open air and sunlight are welcome passengers in the dark interior. The 401A is also the only way to get cooled seats, which are a must-have for anyone living in a hot climate. Additionally, the 401A offers outstanding safety features and tech that once you experience, you won't want to drive without, such as adaptive headlamps, active park-assist, and front-view camera. The 2020 Ford Edge ST is an amazing entry in a segment being redefined by Ford. Since most people interested in buying and driving this vehicle are not professionals, let's leave the nitpicking to the experts.
