2009 Ford Edge problems

ford logo

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2009 Ford Edge problems

The 2009 Ford Edge has several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is a defective fuel tank, which may be a fire risk if not addressed. The fuel tank may corrode due to salt water exposure, causing leaks at the fuel tank seam weld beneath the mounting reinforcement brackets.

Another common problem with the 2009 Ford Edge is transmission issues. Some owners have reported that the transmission would suddenly shut down while driving, accompanied by illuminated error lights and clunking sounds.

Additionally, some 2009 Ford Edge owners have reported electrical problems, including faulty airbags that may not fully inflate or may detach from the assembly.

Other common problems with the 2009 Ford Edge include clicking noises from the wheel area, defective brake booster, and door ajar persistent light. These issues can lead to abnormal sounds, reduced braking capabilities, and battery drain, respectively.

It's essential to note that these common problems do not affect all 2009 Ford Edge vehicles, and many owners may not experience any of these issues. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider getting a vehicle history report and having the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing.

  • VIN: 2FMDK48C09B
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When engaging brake pedal becomes very hard to push and having to push pedal all the way to the floor where it slows finally and then stops. It does not stop when push the brake pedal like normal. Pedal at the floor still not stopping then finally stops but by that time I could have ran into another car or through at stop light. I almost hit someone because of this.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
  • VIN: 2FMDK48C89B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Without warning while driving my vehicle loses the ability to excelerate. I am lucky I haven't been hit by another car. I patiently wait and after a few seconds it will move forward into the turn. I do not get a reading or warning lights of any kind. This has just started happening and it has occurred 4 x this week. I have an appointment to have it serviced. After reading countless on-line reports it sounds like it is a throttle body Assembly or switch issue. Sometimes it drives perfectly...I am concerned about this safety issue. My Edge is older, but only has 56,000. miles on it. I suspect that I am still covered on the extended warranty since my vehicle has lower mileage.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
  • VIN: 2FMDK30C29B
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Called dealer on 10-10-2022, 2:30pm to arrange repair and was told that the dealer would call me when parts were available. I have not been contacted by the dealer or any other party. If this is an urgent safety problem and my life may be at risk, shouldn’t this be a higher priority for the dealer and manufacturer; should I consider my potential loss of life or disability to be collateral damage? Urgent matters allowed to languish for a full year or more do not qualify as making a good faith effort to resolve a safety recall.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • VIN: 2FMDK36C09B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I just submitted a complaint about the transmission system. It doesn't want to drive or speed up in slow traffic or when I'm trying to drive again after stopping. Upon a search, I came across a lot of complaints concerning the Ford Edge transmission and I screenshot a complaint from another Ford Edge owner that describes my ongoing issue EXACTLY as it happens to me. The Edge has a whole lot of transmission issues and on this particular site the complaints cover Edge 2007 through 2012. The transmission definitely needs to be recalled.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • VIN: 2FMDK36C09B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When the car is at a complete stop or at low speed and then you start to drive again or pick up speed (ex: at a stop light or in a traffic jam) the car will jerk even when coasting and it will not pick up speed. It almost sounds like a belt is unwinding but it isn't. If I pull the car over, turn it completely off and wait a minute or two, it starts up again and drives with no problem. This happens several times a week. It also has a burning smell but no smoke is visible and nothing on the dashboard shows any indication of overheating engine. I've read online that this exact issue was found in newer models of the Ford Edge. No check engine light. Definitely a transmission issue as found in other newer models. This is a very dangerous issue and needs to be recalled.

  • VIN: 2FMDK38CX9B

  • Summary: SUDDEN AND TOTAL LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE IN TRAFFIC. THERE WAS WARNING, NO ENGINE LIGHT AND THERE ARE NO CODES TO DIAGNOSE. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING HAZARD AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AND NOT DISMISSED BY FORD. SOME SAY IT COULD BE SEVERAL SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM BUT THE MAIN SOLUTION HAS BEEN THE THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH AND THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CONSIDER A RECALL FIX WITH NO COST TO THE OWNER.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-14
  • VIN: 2FMDK39CX9B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: We have maintained this vehicle from its start. It has been developing a burn out on both rear turn signals in the last two years. The bulbs seem to require replacement more than once every six months. The bulbs seem to be overheating and actually melting the plastic between the bulb glass and the insert itself. Viewing this online it seems to be a problem that goes back for years and yet Ford maintains it is not their problem. I feel it's dangerous and could cause a fire if this continues and seems to affect a majority of customers.

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I see I have two recalls on my vehicle, one states "remedy not yet available" and was issued over a year ago. Manufacturer Recall 21S12, NHTSA Recall Number 21V1158. When is a remedy going to be available? I have been aggressively pursued for the other recall but unable to get any representative from a Ford dealership to return my calls when leaving messages for mobile repair. First was Bob Tomes Ford, McKinney, TX. I received flier that said they will do repairs at home or work. A scheduling rep finally got in touch with someone and they do not perform remote repairs!!! I'm attempting a third dealership today. Another message left, doubt I will get a call back.

I can't even get a return phone call but receive multiple mail notifications, man showing up at my home multiple times, same man following me down my alley, and just this weekend, someone scanning my license and leaving a notice. If I can't schedule the repair, how am I supposed to get this problem resolved that is a possible danger to my life?!?! No one will return my calls!

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured September 11, 2008, to July 1, 2010, and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 23, 2008, to July 1, 2010, originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use, the affected vehicles may leak fuel from the fuel tank seam weld under the tank mounting reinforcement brackets.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and either clean and treat the fuel tank with a corrosion preventative or replace the tank, free of charge. The recall began on May 10, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S31.

Negative 2009 Ford Edge car reviews

I purchased a 2009 Ford Edge in February 2017. Unfortunately, after about three months, I noticed rusting starting to appear in various places such as under the hood, inside doors, along the bottom of the tailgate, and even the roof above the windshield. Additionally, the engine light came on and the code indicated a misfire in cylinder 5. I replaced the COP and spark plugs, but the misfiring persisted. If you have a large budget for repairs, then a Ford Edge may be a good option for you. However, if you are looking to avoid costly repairs, it may be best to steer clear of this model. I encourage you to do your own research and check for yourself by searching for Ford Edge problems on Google.

I made the mistake of choosing the Edge over the Pilot, solely based on the price. However, I regret my decision now. The Pilot is much quieter, smoother, and has better quality materials, especially in the interior. I also didn't realize that the only way to stop the cruise is by braking. Although the Edge looks nicer, it doesn't compare to the quality of the Pilot.

If you own a FORD with a 3.5L Duratec engine (2007-2014), please be aware of a potential issue with the internal water pump. Unfortunately, this design flaw can cause coolant to leak into the oil system without any visible signs of a leak outside. While this is a frustrating problem, it is important to note that regular synthetic oil changes and coolant replacements every 30K miles can help prevent this issue. It is unfortunate that this design flaw was not caught earlier, but we hope that FORD will take responsibility and address this issue for their customers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have experienced multiple issues with my Edge, including problems with the wheels, speakers, electrical system, vents, ignition, and now the rear differential. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address these issues and find a solution. While I am disappointed with the performance of my vehicle, I am determined to work with Ford Motor Company and my dealer to resolve these issues and ensure that my car is running smoothly. Although I have spent a significant amount of time in the service shop, I am committed to finding a resolution and improving my overall experience with this vehicle.

Although we enjoy the car, I am unhappy with the MPG in city driving as I struggle to get 14 MPG. However, the car performs great in highway driving at 70 MPH, achieving over 25 MPG. Additionally, my wife has expressed concerns about the passenger side seat not sliding back far enough to allow good leg room and the insert for the buckle being too low, making it hard for her to buckle the seat belt. Despite these issues, we still find the car to be a good choice.

I've had my 2009 Ford Edge for a year now and I absolutely loved everything about it, until my one year anniversary month. Unfortunately, the air conditioner started acting up at unexpected times, only blowing air as if it were on the defroster setting. When I took the car in to be repaired, the air would come back on and work properly, but later the coolness of the air would vary from time to time. It's frustrating not knowing when it will work or not, especially when I'm busy with work and can't keep running back and forth to the service department. I'm also tired of roasting in the heat when the air conditioner is out. It's disappointing to be paying a huge monthly payment for a car with little to no air conditioning 50% of the time.

I'm so happy with my purchase! Cash for Clunkers combined with rebates and dealer discount made it even better. The ride is quiet, smooth, and handles well. It practically glides over bumps, potholes, and train tracks. The front seats are very comfortable, and the lumbar support adds extra comfort on long trips. Synch makes it a car for the 21st century. Although the mileage could be better, at least it doesn't require premium unleaded gas. The interior is spacious for passengers and cargo, and the rear and front passenger seats fold down, providing lots of room for trips to the hardware store. It even comes with a key fob, so no more locking my keys in the car!

After owning four GM SUVs in a row, I decided to try the Edge as I felt the GM line had fallen behind. I have been very impressed with the vehicle itself, but I must admit I was disappointed in some of the amenities. The instrument panel is very difficult to see in low light conditions, which both drivers find dangerous. Additionally, the radio (LED) is archaic and difficult to read. Lastly, the privacy cover behind the back seat is a bit of a joke.

I have been driving my Ford Edge Limited since March 09, and I must say that I absolutely love it! The technology package was the main reason why I chose it over other vehicles, and I am so glad I did. It offers so much more value for the money compared to other cars. The exterior design is powerful and I love the way it drives!
