The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2016 Ford Edge problems

The 2016 Ford Edge has been reported to have several common problems, including engine oil leaks, steering system issues, and shattered rear windows. These problems are more severe than on many other midsize SUVs, leading to higher repair costs.

Engine oil leaks are a widespread complaint from owners at around 45,000 miles. The oil pan and oil pan gaskets all fail, causing the leaks. This issue is more prevalent in the 2.0L, 4-cylinder, turbo-charged engine.

Steering system issues have also been reported, with some owners experiencing difficulty steering their vehicles. This problem can be dangerous, especially at high speeds or in tight turns.

Shattered rear windows are another common problem with the 2016 Ford Edge. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing defects and accidents.

In addition to these problems, the 2016 Ford Edge has been reported to have faulty airbags and transmission issues. The 2016-2017 Edge models had malfunctioning airbags that prompted a recall, and some owners have reported transmission problems, including the need for total replacement.

The 2016 Ford Edge's electrical system has also been criticized by some owners. Some have reported major electrical problems, including batteries that die frequently. One owner reported that their battery has died five times in the last three months, even after purchasing a brand new battery.

The 2016 Ford Edge's engine has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Some have reported needing a new engine at around 80,000 miles, while others have experienced engine rebuilds or replacements, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt issues.

Overall, while the 2016 Ford Edge has some positive features, such as its smooth ride and good value, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

  • VIN: 2FMPK4J97GB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost has sadly caused us countless issues and extensive $ to repair. The latest issue is the 2020 investigation that revealed a design defect of the engine block and cylinder head, and coolant has been leaking and burning in the engine cylinder, which has lead to me needing a new engine. Unfortunately, the suit displays documented proof Ford knew about it and didn’t disclose it to buyers. This has lead to vast overheating, risking the vehicle catching on fire while in use, burning empty coolant, and a potential for having a blown engine on the highway. We took the car to a trusted shop when the overheating issue occurred and this was our circumstance.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: 2FMPK4J9XGB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We are Canadians live in Calgary, AB Canada. We have a 2016 ford egde. There was an engine warning sign popped up when we had a road trip in US days ago. We also noticed that the car chokes when cold start with white sweet smoke come out. We had the car checked up by a ford dealer at coos bay, Oregon. Here is the diagnostics - dtcp0303 stored related to cylinder 3 misfire - found engine coolant level low - topped off coolant and pressure tested system - found pressure to bleed off abnormally - no external leaks observed - removed aprk plug and bore scope cylinder - verified coolant intrusion in cylinder 3 also found signs of burning coolant on spark plug - recommended repair is long block replacement. We cancelled our unfinished trip and struggled to drive 2000km back home(low speed, keep checking/adding coolant and engine oil). The local ford dealer quoted me 10k CAD to replace the long block. Our car is not even 8 years old at 130K kms. I called Ford Canada and was told they are sorry but the car is out of warranty and no recalls. Although there is a TSB#22-2229 which proves this is a known issue to Ford. I spent some time search on line found many ford owners had same experience and referred by them to post a complain here.

  • Summary: Coolant is leaking into the engine. My car unexpectedly and very suddenly started overheating while driving, without any warning that coolant levels were low. The car was inspected by the dealer's service center, and they confirmed this issue, stating the only solution is to completely replace the engine. The check engine light on the car did come on, but the code was related to an engine misfire. I had spark plugs and an engine coil replaced, but after a few days, the check engine light came back on with the same code of an engine misfire. One day while driving, the temperature gauge warning came on, saying that the temperature of the car was too high and to stop driving immediately. At this point, I checked under the hood and saw that the coolant overflow tank was completely empty.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My Edge has 41,000 miles on it and the engine light came on. I took it to my local dealership and they found that it has coolent intrusion and therefore I need a new engine. The dealership told me there is a TSB# 22-2133 (2.0L EcoBooser - Coolant in Cylinders) for this issue but Ford never issued a recall. I did my own research to find out that there is a class action lawsuit in the Eastern District Court for this exact issue. I contacted Ford Corporate and they said they know nothing about this issue but would help expedite the repairs of my vehicle. The TSB I looked up is directly from Ford so I am a little preterbed they aren't taking responsibility for this. Engines and rental cars are not cheap.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 2FMPK4G94GB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Faulty engine design leads to head gasket failure, engine misfire and stall. Engine stall can cause loss of vehicle motive and braking by loss of vacuum assisted braking. Dealer just completed service on this vehicle and reported the failure after completing repair on another defective part, the flexplate assembly. After completing repairs advised it likely has coolant intrusion issue. Did not inform customer about the TSB showing FORD determined the block is defective and should be replaced at customer cost. Ford has known about this issue since about 2011. These engines need to be recalled. Repair data available to mechanics and on popular video sites show that Fords updated block removes two water paths that interfere with head gasket seating on 2015 - 2019 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost engines. This is a known manufacturer defect that puts owners and occupants in uneeded danger due to Ford's refusal to recall and rectify these engines. There are multiple reports of these engines failing for this issue with as few as 30,000 miles. This engine is also installed in multiple other Ford and Lincoln vehicles including focus, fusion, taurus, Escape, edge, mkz, mkc, and nautilus.

Negative 2016 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Garret Shields 2024-09-29

Although I have had positive experiences with Ford vehicles in the past, the 2016 Ford Edge Titanium presented a unique challenge. The car had a vibration that caused discomfort and headaches during extended rides. After some investigation, I discovered that the moon roof was the source of the issue. Despite the setback, I was able to find a suitable replacement and am now satisfied with my new car.

I bought the car not even a year ago for its great gas mileage, but unfortunately it only gets 13 miles to the gallon. Despite the dealership's claims that this is normal, I have to disagree. In comparison, my Mustang and the brand new Fusion that I have been driving for the last week both get the correct gas mileage right off the lot. I am disappointed with my purchase and would not recommend this car to anyone. It's best to spend your money elsewhere.

I used to love my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium until the APIM gave out. Unfortunately, shortly after the warranty was done, the system barely works anymore. It will cost us $1000 to fix. I just wanted to share my experience with you. Thank you for listening.

I wanted to share my experience with the 2016 Edge's turbo engine. Unfortunately, my engine failed at 55K miles, which seems to be a known issue with this model and recent versions. Thankfully, we have an extended warranty, but it looks like we may end up with a rebuilt engine instead of a new one. Unfortunately, this may not solve the underlying problem. I've been exploring options to trade in the car, but it seems like others are also hesitant to take on this issue. I completely understand their concerns, as we've also experienced some minor problems with the wipers, navigation, Bluetooth, and rear foot-controlled hatch. To make matters worse, we still owe money on the car. I had hoped that Ford would offer us a new car since they were aware of this issue when we purchased it in Nov of 2016. Due to these issues, we've had to cancel our vacation and out of town trips to my husband's doctors (he's a cancer patient). I hope that others can learn from our experience and make informed decisions. Thank you for listening and please don't enter me in the contest.

A few years ago, I purchased a 2008 Ford Edge, but unfortunately, it had a lot of problems. I had to replace the fan for $800, but the same day, it overheated once I got it home. I decided to take it to Carmax, and they offered me 2k for it because the transmission was slipping. Despite the issues, I loved the look and space of the car, so I thought maybe a newer model would be better. However, I got a 2016 Ford Edge titanium, and on the day I drove it home from the dealership, it leaked all coolant, and the engine light came on. We added more coolant, and the problem went away for about a week, but then the engine light came on again. It turned out that the car needed an entirely new engine, which costed 7,300$. Fortunately, I had a great warranty that covered this cost. I later found out that this is a common issue with this car, where the coolant leaks into the engine and destroys it over time. I am now looking to trade this car in to avoid future issues. I don't think I will ever purchase a Ford again.

I don't often use words like 'great' and 'awesome' when describing cars, but my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium deserves these accolades. My wife and I, both in our 60s, were looking for a smaller SUV that was easy to drive around town and park in shopping centers, but still had plenty of room and technology. We didn't need a third row seat, so we looked at the Nissan Murano, Chevy Equinox, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. After test driving the Edge, my wife and I knew it was the SUV for us. We opted for the 302A package, which provides an abundance of safety features and upgrades. The Sync 3 system is much easier to use, with a touch screen that is easy to navigate and voice commands that respond quickly. The Edge is comfortable to drive, with an upscale interior and a sleek exterior design. We've been getting around 20 MPG primarily around town with the 2.0 liter Ecoboost fwd engine and 20 inch wheels. The acceleration and power are smooth and adequate for our daily needs. If you're in the market for a mid-size crossover, I highly recommend test driving the new Edge.

I have driven almost every available mid-size SUV in the market, and I must say that the Edge Sport is a great contender against luxury mid-size SUVs without the hefty price tag. The acceleration is above average, and the engine noise is better than most in its category. The handling is also better than average in its category. While the interior may not compete with luxury mid-size SUVs like Lexus and Acura, it is still above average compared to others in its price range. However, the panoramic roof is not a great option as if a motor goes out, you'll have to replace the entire roof. Overall, the car feels great in your hands, and the tech options are easy to use. The seats are also comfortable. The only issue I've encountered so far is that the rear shocks only lasted 30k miles before failing. Nonetheless, the all-wheel drive works as designed, and it's there when you need it. If you are in the market, make sure to give it a test drive, and you might be pleasantly surprised.

It sounds like the Edge is a great fit for your growing family! The car has plenty of storage and safety features, and it looks really cool too! It handles great and has a little pep when you need it. It's great to hear that your friends have had positive experiences with the Edge as well. While the gas mileage could be better, it's definitely worth it for the extra towing capacity. The tow package with additional cooling and safety features is a great addition. It's understandable that the sunroof lowers the ceiling a little too much on the sides where the rails are, but it's great to hear that there's more headroom without it. The visibility around the A and C/D pillars could be better, but it hasn't been an issue so far. It's great that you're still pleased with your decision to purchase after 4500 miles. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Front seat heaters and coolers. Back seats also recline with seat heaters!

I'm so glad to hear that you love this vehicle! It sounds like it's a perfect match for you with its style, comfort, and overall cost. While I understand your initial disappointment with the gas mileage, it's great to hear that you're now averaging about 28/gal on the highway. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
