The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Delayed Gear Changes:
Some owners have reported issues with delayed gear changes in the 2021 Ford Edge. This can be caused by various factors, such as faulty wiring, sensors, or the transmission control module (TCM). Delayed gear changes can lead to a less smooth driving experience and may even cause the vehicle to jerk or shudder. If you experience this issue, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem.

Stereo System Issues:
Another common problem reported by 2021 Ford Edge owners is related to the stereo system. Some users have experienced issues such as poor sound quality, static, or even complete stereo system failure. If you notice any damage to your vehicle's front bumper, it is recommended to have it repaired or replaced as soon as possible to maintain the vehicle's appearance and safety.

While the 2021 Ford Edge has some reported issues, it is essential to note that these problems are not universal and may only affect a small percentage of vehicles. If you are considering purchasing a 2021 Ford Edge, it is advisable to research and test drive the vehicle to ensure it meets your expectations and requirements.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K94MB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was stopping at a yellow light and the brakes were slow to respond nearly resulting in a collision with the car stopped in front. I initially attributed this to wet brakes since it was raining heavily and I had only gone a short distance. I returned home without further incidence. The next morning my wife took the car and nearly drove into traffic after the car was slow to stop leaving the subdivision. I had the car towed to the dealer, they said the brake booster had failed and that brake booster part is on back order and wouldn't available until the end of October or early November. The car is 3 years old with 25,000 miles. I think the parts back order status may be the result of unexpected demand because of a high failure rate. The dealer said the part in question is a common component used on many different Ford models. I'm not aware of any work stoppage or surge in vehicle demand that would account for the part shortage.

Both the brakes and ABS failed to engage and I hit a guard rail across the intersection. This caused significant damage to my vehicle and was very lucky that no one was hurt. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
  • VIN: 2FMPK4J91MB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2021 Ford Edge SEL with 22,000 miles on it, bought new less than 2 years ago, would intermittently show a warning notification on the dash saying “AWD temporarily disabled”. The car drove different when the warning came on. It was slow to accelerate and more difficult to turn. It happened twice in a span of 2 months. I brought it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a “faulty rear differential”. They told me this is a known Ford issue and directed me to a service bulletin put out by Ford regarding this issue stating Ford is aware. My car did not have normal warning signs- no noises, no vibration, no smell, and I would have never known something was wrong if the warning didn’t pop up those two random times. I was told if the equipment failed while driving, the car could’ve seized up and wouldn’t move. They acknowledged that this is a real safety concern as there were no issues with the car except when the AWD disabled itself temporarily. The car drove normal when it started working again not long after. My car will have been at the dealer 6 days by the time I get it back, estimating about $1500 in repairs (thank you warranty). The car is serviced and maintained regularly and well cared for. This should NOT have happened and put mine and my family’s safety at risk.

Negative 2021 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Junius Franecki 2025-01-05

I regret purchasing a brand new 2020 Ford Edge due to transmission issues that have not been acknowledged or addressed. The car jerks and hesitates between gears, particularly at speeds of 0-35mph and around slow, wide turns, which is both concerning and disappointing given the high cost of the vehicle. While the interior is nice, it is overshadowed by the poor driving experience. Unfortunately, the manufacturer's solution of 'driving it hard' is not a satisfactory resolution. As a result, I have lost faith in Ford and will not be purchasing from them again. I plan to trade in the car as soon as possible.

  2. Humberto Ondricka 2024-11-18

In April 2021, I purchased a 2020 Ford Edge Platinum from a Ford dealership in Valdosta, Georgia. Although I did not test drive this particular vehicle, I had previously test driven another Ford Edge at a different dealership. Unfortunately, after driving off the lot, I noticed some issues with the engine, such as a funny buzzing sound and difficulty accelerating. Despite hoping the issues would resolve themselves, they only got worse over time. I took the vehicle to my local Ford dealership, but the service manager told me there was nothing wrong with it. I was frustrated, but a representative from Ford Motor Company helped me schedule a service appointment with the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. After waiting for over two months, I finally had my appointment. The service manager informed me that there was a TSB #21-2081 on the Ford Edge and that they had updated the software as stated on the TSB. He also explained that I needed to drive the vehicle for a week for it to adapt to the new software. Although I was disappointed that the dealership had not done the software update earlier, I appreciated the service manager's help and professionalism. I plan to give the vehicle another chance and hope that the issues are resolved. Thank you for your assistance, Ford Motor Company.

  3. Ernie Weissnat 2024-10-06

The Ford Edge has a windshield that is severely angled, resulting in a deep dashboard. As a result, the driver and front passenger sit far back from the windshield, creating a tunnel-like effect. Unfortunately, this design makes it difficult to see out of the vehicle, especially when looking out the back. On the bright side, the 4-cylinder Ecoburst engine provides good power, and the steering and brakes are excellent. The seats are reasonably comfortable, but if you opt for a sunroof, headroom is compromised by about 3 inches. While the ride is relatively quiet and comfortable on the highway, you can feel the rolls, bumps, and cracks in the road on city streets and back roads. Interestingly, Fords do not have a gas cap, but instead, they have a hole to the gas tank with a couple of inside flaps. Overall, the Edge is not a bad SUV, but there are many better choices out there.

  4. Kaleb Wunsch 2024-07-25

I purchased a 2020 Edge brand new and used it for a year, putting 86,000 miles on it, all of which were highway miles. Recently, I took it to the dealer to diagnose a coolant leak and was informed that the engine is leaking coolant on the head and needs to be replaced. The dealer quoted me a cost of $8,000 to $9,000 for the replacement. Despite the dealer informing me that Ford is aware of the issue and would replace the motor if I had under 60,000 miles, I have lost faith in Ford SUVs and will not be purchasing one again.

We recently traded our CX-5 for the Edge and unfortunately, it hasn't been the best fit for us. While we loved the previous model Edge with a V6 engine, the 2020 version has not lived up to our expectations. Despite its spacious interior and large trunk, we have experienced some issues with the car. However, we do appreciate the infotainment system, even though it can be slow at times. Overall, we have found the Edge to be lacking in attention to detail and not up to par with its competitors. While it may not have been the right choice for us, we understand that everyone's needs are different. We will be exploring other options in the future, but we appreciate the experience and will continue to be loyal to Mazda.

Positive 2021 Ford Edge car reviews

We currently own a 2013 Edge Sport which I love, but my wife finds the steering and overall 'feel' of the '13 a bit heavy. Recently, we test drove the 2020 Edge and were blown away by the changes and advances Ford has made over the last eight years. Where the 2013 drives like a plush riding truck, the 2020 Edge ST drives like a sports car. The new 2.7 V6 is incredible - this car is FAST with dazzling acceleration, and the suspension is fantastic. We have a cabin in Big Bear California, and the drive up the mountain roads is always fun but challenging. Our '13 has a bit softer suspension, so when taking the hairpin turns, I usually have to slow down to 35-40 mph max to keep the car level. Pushing it past that speed creates a bit of body lean. However, in our new 2020, pushing the car into these turns at 60 mph, and again, WOW - no body lean whatsoever. This change in handling is so dramatic, it inspires confidence that this new Edge can do anything you ask it to do. As far as longevity - only time will tell, but so far, we LOVE this car! If you're in the market for a newer SUV, I highly recommend test driving the new Edge! Kudos to Ford for transforming the Edge from a plush, comfortable SUV to a plush, comfortable CROSSOVER that takes advantage of all the new technologies that have become available to the consumer over the last eight years. By the way, one major change: no more INTERNAL WATER PUMP like the 2007-2014 model - a potentially horrible design flaw which all Edge owners are aware of and one of the worst design blunders in automotive history. The new 2.7 V6 has a nice old fashioned bolt-on water pump!

The Edge is a very comfortable and sporty SUV with great cargo space for your things and excellent gas mileage. It's a great choice!

It's great to hear about your positive experiences with Ford vehicles! From the Bronco to the Edge, it sounds like you've had quite the journey with Ford. I'm glad to hear that you've had great quality and customer service with your Fords, and that you've found the Edge to be a perfect fit for your needs. The Edge's features, such as the blind spot monitoring/lane assist and auto brights, sound like they make for a comfortable and safe driving experience. It's also great to hear that your granddaughter loves the space in the Edge. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us!03/22 Update - Still loving the Edge! Although I'm disappointed that the auto lift gate doesn't seem to work, I've heard that complaint about other brands as well. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Of course, with gas prices going up, it's a bit of a punch in the gut every time I fill up, but you can't have everything. I'm averaging about 25 MPG, which isn't bad at all considering my heavy foot. I highly recommend the Edge!
