ford logo

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2019 Ford Edge problems

The 2019 Ford Edge is a midsize SUV that has gained popularity since its introduction in 2007. While it is known for its solid reliability, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most widespread issues is stalling while driving, which has been reported around 50,000 miles. The primary cause of this problem is a lack of fuel, which can be attributed to a dirty filter, clogged injectors, or a failed pump. Repairing fuel system issues can cost between $150 and $850, depending on the source and local labor rates.

Another problem that 2019 Edge owners have encountered is a frozen stereo screen within the first 10,000 miles. Software updates are available for the stereo system, which can improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free during vehicle servicing, while others may charge around $50.

Key fob failures have also been reported in the first 5,000 miles. The first step to address this issue is to check the battery in the fob, as it may simply need a replacement, which costs under $5. If there are communication issues between the fob and the SUV, it will need to be checked and reprogrammed by a Ford dealership or locksmith, costing around $150.

There are two recalls on the 2019 Ford Edge, which is similar to many other midsize SUVs from the same year. The first recall is for seat belt webbing, and the second is for missing or loose bolts on the start/stop accumulator. Ford will replace parts on both for free on affected models.

Despite these issues, the 2019 Ford Edge has been rated as a reliable vehicle with a lifespan of around 200,000 miles.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-09
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J99KB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission shifts very harshly from stop and go. It shakes, slips, and shutters while driving. From around 55-60 mph the car shakes and the rpm jumps around like it’s trying shift gears, occasionally the car will jump as if you’re driving on the white bumpy line. When you let off the accelerator the car shakes. When slowing down to stop, the car downshifts very harshly and makes it feel as if you’re slamming on the brakes. I’m not sure what kind of risk this could cause for me or others. Multiple dealers have said that it must be the transmission needing to be replaced. It has not been inspected by a dealer, that’s just what they’ve told me. The only warning light that has appeared a few times is a “drive not available” warning light when shifting into drive, it immediately shifts the car into park when the warning appears. The car started being jumpy and jerky shortly after being purchased in 2022 with 50,000 miles. Reverse also seems to engage harshly causing the car to make a loud pop noise and a slight jolt occurs. The vehicle now has around 78,000 miles.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K94KB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle seemed to be idling strange. Also seemed jerky while waiting at the stop light. Attempted to accelerate and it was lagging. Once I started driving it seemed better until the "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" alert displayed. The vehicle then started disbursing a white smoke. After pulling over the light went off, however the vehicle continued to jerk forward and was idling strange. Continued to have a lagging effect when attempting to accelerate. The vehicle continued to emit a white smoke. The vehicle was brought to a mechanic who indicated the head gasket and/or engine needed replacement. Had been told be the mechanic they have had several over issues exactly like this one. They also indicated there was a recall and/or possible lawsuit. My VIN came up with no recall which makes no sense considering I am having the same issue that's been reported under the recall.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K9XKB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My cars rpm's started randomly jumping which would coincide with a slight jerking feeling when the car shifted gears. First I was told it was my spark plugs and then the coil packs. When both of those were changed and the problem persisted they ran multiple diagnostic tests and came up with nothing. Then my car started to shudder when I put gas in it and then the radio screen and door locks would intermittently stop working and again they found no error codes. Then my pre-collision warning system started going off when there are no cars even remotely near. The same for my blind spot indicators. They just go off for no reason. Now after months of issues and zero error codes, they say it's the transmission failing and it will cost me $6,000 to fix. That's assuming that is actually the problem.

STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J97KB
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine: Severe surging at low power settings, especially during engine warm-up. This surging is not related to air conditioner compressor cycling on/off, or turbo lag. Body: Rear hatch "kick to open" feature often activates suddenly without warning and without a deliberate kick motion by operator. This feature cannot be disabled; only the actuator can be disabled using instrument panel menus. This creates a condition where any inadvertent "open" command using any device will unlatch, but not open, the hatch. This can lead to loss of internal security and/or driving with an unlatched hatch. Thank You

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K97KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The EGR Cooler (K2GZ-9F464-A) on my 2019 Ford Edge Titanum EcoBoost 2L cracked acutely while driving my children to school. No warning lights came on at any point. Once the car was in park, I noticed large amounts of smoke pouring out of the exhaust pipes. I had my children in the car strapped into car seats. Should the car have caught fire my children's lives would have been in jeopardy. Our lives would have also been at risk for injury should my car have completely failed while driving. This part failure has been confirmed by a repair shop. July 09, 2020, there was a TSB by Ford issued for: 2.0L EcoBoost - Illuminated MIL With Various DTCs And/Or Low Coolant Level, White Smoke from Tailpipe And/Or External Coolant Leak. However, this known failure with TSB information was not dispelled to me (the public) through Ford Pass App or by Ford Corporate or the Ford Dealer, where I purchased the car in 2020. A simple PCM software update would have prevented this issue for occurring. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The issue occurred on 10/02/2024.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J91KB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2019 Ford Edge SEL is having transmission issues that ford knows about, as many customers have the same issue starting between 37K to 60K miles. The transmission is jerky between 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th gear. It starts from 15mph to 40 mph. No check engine light comes on. Sometimes it doesn't want to shift into the next gear briefly and I don't drive the vehicle hard at all. Vehicle has been taken to Ford for them to say that it needs a software update and possibly a torque converter to be replaced. i have 54K miles on the vehicle and I purchased it used in August of 2022 with 41K miles on it because of the inventory shortage.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 2FMPK4J92KB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle began shuddering and losing power while driving. Issues are related to automatic transmission gear shifts. Gears seem to be slipping or not shifting correctly. Tachometer is revving without acceleration at times. Check engine and ford app errors indicate powertrain issue. When slowing down, car randomly acted as if the brake had been pushed hard. If I had not been on a road without other vehicles, a crash would have been likely. Car has been taken to local dealer, who had not yet diagnosed, but has already indicated this is a common issue with 2019 edges and will likely be an expensive fix.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 2FMPK4K9XKB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle began shuddering when accelerating from approx. 20 mph to 50 mph several months ago. It was not always consistent at first, but steadily began worsening. Firestone was unable to diagnose. We though maybe dirty fuel system, but fuel injector cleaner made no difference. Took it to Ford dealer and diagnosed as failing torque converter. Upon further research determined that Ford had issued recalls for other models and years but not ours for this part, but I found numerous reports in discussion forums online of this same part failing in our year and model. Part is currently backordered with no ETA and fortunately we have 1 month and approx. 2000 mi remaining of powertrain warranty so it will be covered. However, Ford cannot provide ETA on the part and I have concerns of manufacturing quality for the replacement part we are awaiting as well as concerns for other drivers with the same vehicle. I called Ford customer service and they advised to submit a report to NHTSA and the only way for me to formally submit a complaint directly to Ford is by snail mail to a PO Box. So, I'm submitting this report in hopes an investigation will be opened about this issue and pressure will be applied to Ford to boost inventory of this critical part and begin a recall process.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-05
  • VIN: 2FMPK3J90KB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I purchased a 2019 Ford Edge (ecoboost) with 49,000 miles. At approximately 55,000 miles the transmission began shifting erratically, cause the vehicle to lurch and then arbitrarily stop. I had the transmission fluid drained and replaced and the transmission performance appeared to improve for approximately 6,000 miles. The erratic shifting, lurching and stopping returned. This behavior placed myself and my passengers at extreme risk as the arbitrary changes in speed (and stopping) would occur without notice, while driving in traffic. I brought the car to my mechanic (who is a recently retired Ford service manager). He was able to confirm the problem and directed me to a transmission mechanic with expertise in Ford transmissions. He inspected the transmission and confirmed several defective components in the transmission. He further indicated that after-market upgraded parts have been produced as a result of the prevalence of this issue. The mechanic indicated that the transmission must be rebuilt. No warning lamps were present until the vehicle went into a constant state of erratic shifting, lurching and stopping.

Negative 2019 Ford Edge car reviews

  1. Kale Eichmann 2025-03-25

I purchased the titanium AWD with all the features, so you can imagine my disappointment when the vehicle left me stranded at a gas station. The lights flickered, the engine ran, all the checked lights were on, and then suddenly nothing. I was disappointed to find that the rain-sensing technology wasn't working, the foot lightgate was unresponsive, and the engine was making a buzzing electrical noise (which I didn't hear until we got it home). Unfortunately, the vehicle has been in the shop twice so far. The first time was a nightmare due to the dealership not taking my complaints seriously. They said that the rain-sensing technology couldn't be tested unless it rained, but after four days, they ended up replacing the unit. As for why the engine stalled, they had no clue since the computer report showed that the car was fine. Fordpass has been a no-go to connect, and the ABS traction has kicked in intermittently twice while on the road on a beautiful clear day, causing the vehicle to slow down and be unresponsive. Again, the dealer said that there was nothing on the computer report. The second visit to the Ford shop was much better, and they did listen. They somewhat fixed the issue with the engine noise electrical connection and Fordpass connect, but the computer report showed that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Overall, there are so many glitches happening that I'm willing to bite the bullet and pay extra to trade it in for something else. Unfortunately, it won't be a Ford.

This brand new vehicle has been experiencing several issues, such as the intermittent freezing of the touchscreen which controls everything, the failure of the lift gate which requires manual opening, the occasional stalling of the car due to the auto stop feature, and the gas pump shutting off prior to filling the tank. These issues are certainly a nuisance. However, I have scheduled an appointment with the dealer next week to address these concerns. While they have mentioned that intermittent issues can be difficult to repair, I am confident that they will be able to resolve these problems. After all, this is a brand new car!

I've had my 2019 Ford Edge for 5 months and everything was going well until one day when I was leaving a grocery store. Unfortunately, my car froze up when I tried reversing out of the parking spot. I couldn't move any gears and the wheels wouldn't budge. I immediately called a Ford dealership and spoke to their service department. The representative was very helpful and understanding, but unfortunately, he had never heard of this issue before. He advised me to have the car towed to the service center. I then called AAA and they promptly sent a tow truck. The driver was very professional and tried his best to help me out. He had never seen anything like this before and had a hard time getting the car up on the tow truck. Finally, we managed to get it to the shop. The mechanics there were very thorough and after a week of investigation, they found that multiple transmission controls, motherboards, and control panels needed to be replaced. Although I was nervous about the situation, I was relieved that the issue was resolved. The car now runs smoothly and I'm happy with the service I received. However, I do have some minor complaints about the car, such as the horn and the rotary gear shift control instead of a regular gear shift shaft. Overall, I would recommend being cautious when purchasing this brand, but I'm satisfied with the outcome of my experience.

This is the message I sent to Ford through Facebook. It's easier to copy and paste. I bought a 2019 Ford Edge Titanium in February 2020. Recently, I had an accident with a coke in a styrofoam cup where my straw went through the cup and I lost all my coke in the cup holder, which is in the middle console. The liquid filled up both cup holders. I was driving but only 30 seconds away from my destination, which was a friend's house. I quickly called her and told her to bring out paper towels so I could soak up the liquid. By the time I pulled up, she was already outside with a wad of paper towel for me. I went to soak up the liquid and it was gone! So, I was like, okay, weird but I guess it evaporated. I continued on with my day. However, the next day, I was driving my car and all of a sudden I lost all my dash lights, everything. I also could not use my AC or roll down windows. I took my car home and parked it. I tried to start it again after several minutes to see if it would all light up again, but it would not start. I waited several more minutes and tried it again. It started, had all my lights on but the 'check engine' light remained. I shut it off again, restarted it several minutes later, and it started but no dash lights again. I turned it off, waited several minutes, and restarted it. Again, it would not start. At that point, I left it alone and didn't touch it again until the next day. The next day, I went out and started it and it started. I had all my dash lights, and the check engine light was still on. I drove it to the Ford dealership to have it diagnosed. The whole drive there, I gained my dash lights and lost them periodically. I could not drive my car over 30 mph. I finally reached the dealership, turned off my car under the bay, but realized I needed to drive up a little more. It wouldn't start again. So, this is where my complaint begins.I explained to the service person that my car was acting up with the dash lights, not starting, and the check engine light remaining on. Although I had forgotten about my drink accident, I did not mention it at the time. After waiting for about 45 minutes, the service person informed me that they had never seen anything like this before and that I would need to arrange for a ride home. I contacted my warranty provider to inquire about a rental car, but they required a diagnosis before approving it. Since a diagnosis was not possible at that time, I rented a car from Enterprise. The next day, I remembered my drink accident and decided to inform the dealership. However, they still could not diagnose the issue, which meant I could not get a rental reimbursement without it. I shared the information about my accident with the service lady, who relayed it to the mechanical team. They were grateful for the information as they were unaware of the sensitive parts in the console of a Ford Edge.I was told that the dealership would call me once they checked out the issue. This morning, I received a call from them informing me that the problem was due to a drink that I had spilled in the cup holder. Unfortunately, this is not covered under my warranty. I am quite surprised and disappointed by this news. How could sensitive parts be installed or built inside a cup console that is not secure or protected? I spoke with a Ford representative named Syvonne (1-866-631-3788 ext. 79268) who informed me that there is nothing that can be done about this. Does this mean that I should not have drinks in my car, as there is a risk of accidentally spilling liquid into a sensitive area? I am feeling terrible about this purchase now. I want your company to know how hard I worked to be able to finally own something nice in my life, and I chose a Ford because my late father was a die-hard Ford man and I knew he would be pleased with my choice. Thank you for your understanding.

I owned a 2013 Ford Edge for six years and put over 200k miles on it due to my frequent driving. Recently, I decided it was time for a new car. While I'm not completely satisfied with my new vehicle, I'm hopeful that I'll adjust to it soon. The driving experience feels more like a car than a truck, which is taking some getting used to. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding a comfortable driving position despite adjusting the seat and steering wheel. If the gas and brake pedals were adjustable, it might help. Additionally, the legroom between the front and back seats is smaller than in my previous car. My two-year-old granddaughter can now touch the back of the front seat with her feet, which wasn't possible before. Overall, the car feels less solidly built than my previous one. While I do have some regrets about my purchase, I'm hopeful that I'll grow to like it more over time.

Positive 2019 Ford Edge car reviews

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2019 Ford Edge Titanium in November 2019! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. You made a wise decision to trade in your 2014 Ford Escape Titanium for a vehicle with more interior room and cargo space. The Edge certainly delivers on that front! The interior is spacious, refined, and quiet, making it a comfortable ride for you and your family. It's wonderful to hear that your sons, who are both about 6' tall, can sit comfortably in the back seat with leg room to spare. The Edge also allows you to haul a lot of luggage, which is perfect for long road trips. While the vehicle didn't come with navigation, the Android Auto integration is a great feature that more than makes up for it. It's easy to use and very convenient. You mentioned that some reviews have criticized the Edge for not being very quick, but you've found that using premium fuel and putting it in S mode makes a big difference. That's great advice for anyone considering this vehicle! After looking at several other options, including the Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Highlander, and the Kia Sorento, it's clear that you made the right choice with the Edge. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I recently traded in my 2017 car, which I was very happy with, and wasn't even in the market for a new one. However, the dealer made me a great offer that I couldn't refuse. After driving the new car for three weeks, I can confidently say that the upgrade was well worth it. It feels like Ford asked me, 'How can we improve on your 2017?' and then addressed all of my answers. The new 8-speed is super smooth, and the car feels much peppier, especially off the line (although it's no hot rod). The Start/Stop system is innocuous, and the ride is more refined as well. The dial shifter takes some getting used to (I reach for a stick that isn't there), but overall, the build quality is much better, and the restyled hood gives better visibility than my previous one. I particularly like the new steerable headlights (LED) and the fog lights, as well as the wireless charging. After a year of driving, everything I mentioned above still holds true. I've taken it on a couple of road trips and averaged 27-29 mpg highway, depending on conditions. I never get below 21 mpg in all conditions. After 18 months, I still stand by my previous comments. I also appreciate the OTA updates that Ford provides for Sync 3. The latest updates have included enhancements to the Navigation sub-display next to the speedometer that shows Google Maps directions when using Android Auto. It also shows the speed limits. They also revised the Sync 3 'skin' to reflect the current Ford graphics style. After two years of driving, I've only had one problem so far: a faulty Windshield Washer motor, which the dealer replaced under warranty. The only issue I have is with the sound system when using Android Auto. The sound quality is diminished if you use Bluetooth for audio. If you connect the phone to the car via USB, you have to select 'This phone' on your phone to get improved sound quality (through USB) rather than 'Ford Edge' (which uses Bluetooth).I really wish Ford had included Aptx support so that the higher frequencies could be reproduced more effectively. I wanted to share an update on my experience with the car. Since purchasing it, there was a clicking noise in the front end when turning. After taking it to two different dealers who couldn't find the issue, I took it to a third dealer and showed them a video of the problem. They were able to replace both front half-shafts, which completely eliminated the issue! Other than that, the car has been fantastic!

I have purchased this vehicle for the third time and I am currently in the process of having my fourth windshield installed since April. Unfortunately, all of the windshields I have received from Ford have had bad distortion around the rear view mirror. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved with the right solution.

I absolutely adore my Edge! It's incredibly spacious and comfortable, and the power liftgate is a lifesaver when you have your hands full. The amount of storage space in the back is simply amazing - I'm pretty sure I could fit my entire house in there and still have room to spare! The backup camera has already saved us a couple of times, and the large touchscreen is so convenient - I barely even have to touch it since it's voice activated. Plus, with features like blind spot and lane assist, adaptive cruise, charging ports, and auto-dimming headlights, this SUV truly has it all. Trust me, you won't find anything better out there. The only minor issue I've had is that it's supposed to have 8 cup holders, but I can only seem to find 4. Not a big deal though - I don't really need 8 cup holders anyway, but it's still a bit of a mystery!

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your third Edge! It sounds like you have had a great experience with this vehicle. I completely agree with you that the interior is top-notch and the ease of use is fantastic. It's great to hear that you find the controls intuitive and easy to use, even as someone who works in technology. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
