2012 Ford Edge problems
The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.
Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus). The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.
All production of the first two generations of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.
The third generation launched in 2023 is called the Edge L, and was first produced and sold exclusively in China.

Common 2012 Ford Edge problems
The 2012 Ford Edge has been known for several common problems, primarily related to sensor failures, engine issues, and brake system problems.
- Stalling Engines: Frequent engine stalling issues are reported in the first 55,000 miles. Some owners have had to replace the engine, costing over $4,000, or install a new throttle body for $1,200.
- Brake System Problems: Brake system issues are prevalent in many 2012 Ford Edge vehicles, with the booster failing in the first 60,000 miles. This makes the brake system very difficult to use, and replacing the booster can cost about $1,200.
- Faulty Airbags: The 2012 Ford Edge models had malfunctioning airbags that prompted a recall. The driver's airbags were either not fully inflated or completely detached from the assembly, posing a significant safety issue.
- Transmission Issues: Several Edge models, including the 2012 model, have struggled with a faulty transmission. Some reports claimed the transmission stopped working while driving, and others heard clunking sounds from the transmission, followed by illuminated error lights.
- Faulty Brake Booster: The brake booster defect is a prevalent issue in Ford Edge models from 2007 to 2015. Changes in driving conditions could lead to the development of a tear in the brake booster’s diaphragm, negatively impacting the vehicle’s braking capabilities.
- Door Ajar Persistent Light: The 2012 Ford Edge often experiences an issue where the door ajar light stays on, even when all doors are closed. This problem, caused by a faulty switch in the door latch mechanism, can lead to battery drain and accidental door unlocking.
- Faulty A/C System: The 2011 Ford Edge had problems with its air conditioning system overheating, especially after around 120,000 miles. This issue, which results in the A/C blowing hot air or not working in hot weather, can potentially be fixed by replacing the cooling fan and timing belt. However, the repair costs can exceed $1,700, depending on parts and labor costs.
- Coolant Leak Into Cylinder: The 2017 Edge has the most overall complaints, with the most-reported problem being a coolant leak into cylinder 2. This issue can cost around $5,800 to fix, with an average mileage of 74,000 miles.
- Engine Light On, Coolant in the Cylinder: The 2016 Edge has the second-most overall complaints, with the second-most reported problem being an engine light on due to coolant in the cylinder. This issue can cost around $6,900 to fix, with an average mileage of 84,000 miles.
These problems have contributed to the 2012 Ford Edge's lower reliability ratings and higher ownership costs compared to other SUVs on the market.

- Summary: The issue is my 2012 Ford Edge passenger seat door ajar sensor. The car alarm has been going off all day and in the middle of the night and now the car battery is dead, I've researched this an their are many other consumers that have been having the same issue with 2011 & 2012 Ford Edge vehicles. Why hasn't there been a recall from Ford regarding this? I have not taken this in to be inspected. I understand that the cost for the replacement sensor unit and labor can be $400 - $600. I will try to disconnect the sensor myself and avoid this cost. Now it will be a safety issue. Please encourage Ford to issue a recall on this. Thank you

- Summary: The door latch system is malfunctioning. The passenger side door will be closed but the light comes on that the door is open or ajar. This is a safety concern. I believe the door to be closed all the way but what if it's not and it opens while driving. I'm not sure if it is just a sensor or the door latch system is not working correctly.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
- VIN: 2FMDK3JC5CB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My 2012 Ford Edge has always had an issue with its brakes. I put new ones on and then the ABS system goes haywire and kicks in making the car feel like the brakes are constantly engaged. The car has also stopped in the middle of the road by it self with no warning. The brake pedal at times is squishy as well. I have it at a Ford dealership now to get it fixed I have to purchase a new ABS unit and modular. These parts are on indefinite back order per the dealership. I cannot be without a car for months on end but I dare not drive it because it is a safety hazard with unpredictable braking. My son drives this car and I do not want him involved in an accident related to this faulty brake system. Ford should recall this issue and correct it before someone dies in an accident. This dealership does not offer a loaner car like other car manufacturers do which is disgraceful when it is their product that is faulty and on back order. Since my son needs this car ASAP I may have to resort to buying the parts off of the internet.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-26
- VIN: 2FMDK4JC8CB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There was no warning stated in the dash, but I went to drive my car one day and the brakes were sunk to the floor. I drove it around carefully for a little bit and realized the brake pedal built pressure if it was constantly being pressed, however, it would lose the pressure instantly. I got the brakes bled and replaced a brake line since I had replaced both of the rear calipers prior (no issues there and no issues with brake pads or the brakes themselves). A few weeks went by and I lost the pressure again instantly. I called the mechanic to take a look and they replaced the brake booster and master cylinder and bled the brakes. The brake lines/hoses were fine with no leaks. I picked the vehicle up and the brake pedal is still soft and mushy with no pressure building. I am scared to drive it in case I accidentally hit someone and it is currently winter (snow & ice). I have new tires but I fear the brakes will give out on me soon. I don’t think these parts are up for inspection or whether the issue is with the abs module or the HCU, but it appears to be a common issue with 2012 ford edges and other years. The time frame for this is all within 10 weeks since I wasn’t driving my vehicle for about 4 weeks.

The problem persisted, taking car to technician for further analysis on three separate occasions, noticing a strange noise while pressing the brake pedal, described as a “wind blowing” noise. After more work, brake malfunction happened again on 1/3/2024.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-20
- VIN: 2FMDK3GC5CB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes extremely stiff while being depressed. While backing out of garage ended up in side lawn. I have to use an excessive amount of force to break normally and avoid a collision with another vehicle. A local service technician diagnosed the issue and determined the cause to be a faulty brake booster. The technician recommended replacing the brake booster. He noted that his internet search was flooded with complaints about this situation and he showed me where q Ford dealership had fixed the problem by replacing the brake booster under Customer Satisfaction Program 13N02. I tried calling Ford to see if they would replace the booster under this program and because and Ford told me the age of my car and mileage was outside scope of this program. Cost precludes me from fixing this. Disappointed in Ford. Will keep using excessive force to brake.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-02
- VIN: 2FMDK4JC8CB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am one of thousands of people who have had the power brake booster fail on their Ford Edge. Initially, my vehicle failed to stop at an intersection when another vehicle was running the red light, and I was nearly t-boned. The brake pedal was almost impossible to press in. I thought the issue was due to the icy conditions at the time and some problem with the ABS. This summer the real problem became apparent as the brakes have started squealing and hissing every time they are pressed, and the pressure required to come to a full stop varies from nearly none and jerking to an immediate stop to the point I am barely able to press the pedal hard enough to get it to stop at all. Sometimes both situations will occur during one stop, and the brake pedal will go from excessively resistant to dropping to the floor, at which point I will lose all stopping power momentarily while I let the pedal slowly hiss back into place and press it again. The first time that happened, I was trying to stop for a bike that started to cross without waiting for the crosswalk signal, and I nearly hit them. Ford’s site states I’m covered under the CSP for this part, but I am unable to find a dealer willing to provide the service as they believe the CSP only covers 10 years after the model year (my mileage is under the 150k limit). Whether or not that’s true, a CSP is insufficient in this scenario as a quick internet search shows power brake booster failure is very common in this model line and it is unequivocally a life and safety risk.

- Summary: Intermittently when you hit a bump, the brake pedal goes to the floor and may stay that way for a couple of days and then it comes back. This is the second brake booster ford replaced, I see that brakes are a constant problem on these vehicles, this repair is costing me a $1000.00 the car only has 90000 miles on it. My wife is afraid to drive it anymore.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-31
- VIN: 2FMDK4KC7CB

- Summary: My engine stopped as I was driving approximately 60 mph on the highway. Weather clear, dry, 90 degrees. I coasted to the side of the road. Engine immediately started. I drove a short distance and the vehicle stalled again. It again started and I drove a short distance to pull into a safe location. As I was waiting for oncoming traffic so I could turn left into a driveway the vehicle stalled in the middle of the road. It again started and I was able to park in a safe location. The vehicle started and operated. I then drove the vehicle to a auto shop to check for codes. No codes. Checked battery and alternator which were fine. New gas in gas tank, clean air filter. See on internet site that these vehicle are prone to this and are dangerous. Drove another 40 miles back home with no problems.

Ford has come a long way over the years. I'm so glad to hear that you love your Ford Edge inside and out!
-
The 2012 Edge is one of the nicest and most comfortable SUVs I have ever driven. When you 'floor it' on the road, it simply responds and takes off. The smoothness of the ride is indescribable. The test drive we took before purchase just did not do it justice. We have taken several trips in it now and you never get tired because the leather seats are so comfortable.
-
With almost 120,000 miles on my '12 Edge, I can confidently say that it has been a fantastic vehicle. I have experienced no major issues and it has proven to be comfortable, the perfect size, fuel-efficient, and exceptional in the snow. Although minor issues have arisen in the past year, such as the back-up camera malfunctioning and the a/c tube getting plugged, they were quickly resolved. These minor issues have not diminished my high opinion of this vehicle. In fact, my research for my next vehicle has set the bar high, thanks to the exceptional performance of my Edge. It was definitely a great buy!

The build quality is very solid, with no rattles, squeaks or other sounds. The V6 engine provides lots of power, which is truly amazing! The Sync with MyFordTouch is a really nice feature, but it's important to spend some time learning it and keep in mind that the touch screen is not instantaneous. It's worth noting that the V6 engine can consume a lot of gas, so it's important to be mindful of how far you press the pedal down to pass or accelerate. However, when you do need that extra power, it's truly impressive!

Living in a mountainous area, I found myself struggling for a few months every year with my FWD vehicle. It was time to upgrade to an AWD and find a car that could accommodate my needs. With two dogs, musical instruments, groceries, and grandkids on occasion, my smaller FWD sedan just wasn't cutting it. I needed a bigger car that could handle the road and hills while carrying all my stuff. After looking at several vehicles, I decided on the Edge. I had rented one before and was very happy with its performance in snow and on hills. Plus, the tech features are fantastic!

I had a bit of a rough start with my Edge. Unfortunately, I had to return it to the dealer within just 4 days of receiving it. The ecoboost's turbo charge can cause the wheels to spin if the road is wet when starting from a stop, which was a bit of a challenge. Additionally, the sync system had some issues. When it was working, it was great, but unfortunately, it wasn't always reliable. The navigation screen would sometimes go blank unexpectedly or display a message saying that the SD card was not detected. Occasionally, the Bluetooth would suddenly disconnect, making it difficult to answer phone calls. I also had trouble with the radio tuning seek button on the wheel, which didn't always work properly. Despite these issues, the dealer suggested that it was my phone causing the problems, but I tried two different phones and still experienced the same issues.

I have been experiencing some issues with my Edge lately. The dash has started to rattle and I have been unable to achieve the stated MPG on the window sticker. Despite driving gently and sticking to posted speed limits, the best I can get is 19-20 MPG. I have also found the Sync system in this and other Fords to be quite frustrating. It doesn't seem to understand plainly spoken English and often connects me to the wrong place. I have been considering trading it in for an Onstar equipped car/truck. Thank you for your understanding.

I purchased a used 2012 Ford Edge SEL edition with 141,447 miles on it. It ran great for the first 4 months, during which I only put 4,000 miles on it. However, major problems started to occur, including catalytic converter failure, O2 sensor failure, fuel sending unit system failure, backup camera failure, and valve cover gasket failure. Unfortunately, these are all expensive repairs. I had a difficult time with the vehicle and would not recommend it to anyone. Although the Ford Edge is a great vehicle when it runs well, it is better to get rid of the whole vehicle rather than try to fix it once issues start to arise. It's no wonder that Ford is stopping production of the Ford Edge in 2023. UPDATE: I purchased a used 2012 Ford Edge SEL edition with the 2.0L engine and only 141,000 miles, which is low mileage for a ten-year-old SUV. Unfortunately, 5,500 miles later, my transmission blew. Prior to that, my transmission had died twice while I was driving in traffic, which was scary. The transmission came back on a few seconds later, but this is not safe. I had the transmission replaced, but 11,000 miles later, the replacement transmission stopped working. Over the 13,000 miles I was able to get out of my Ford Edge, the following components failed: the backup camera, gas sending unit, windshield wiper switch, both front driver and passenger side ball joints, two driver side seat motors, trunk lift gate motor, and replacement trunk liftgate motor. The engine started leaking oil at 146k miles, and there were internet problems with the AC unit, intermittent problems with the Microsoft Ford Sync 2 module, and intermittent problems with the ignition switch. The 2012 Ford Edge can be very expensive to maintain and has left me financially burdened for about a year. My suggestion to everybody is to not buy the 2012 Ford Edge, as you will regret it.

The Edge is undeniably a good looking SUV, with its sleek design and lovely interior details at the SEL level. However, I have had some issues with it that have been quite frustrating. Within 8 months of owning it, I had to deal with 3 recalls, including a scary fuel line recall that took a week to fix. Even now, 4 years later, I have had to deal with a few more issues, such as the drive terrain sensor going out in the middle of traffic, causing my steering column to lock and requiring a tow to the dealer for service. Despite these issues, I have found that unplugging the car battery and rebooting the computer can often solve any tech problems. Additionally, I have found that the SUV does not handle snow or rain very well, with slow stopping times and not enough power to get a good grip on the road when accelerating from a dead stop in snow. Overall, I have been disappointed with the reliability of this $36,000 car. In fact, I have had to replace the engine with no financial assistance from Ford, which was a costly and frustrating experience. As a result, I have decided to switch to a Honda Pilot, which I have not needed to service in 2 years!

The brake issues with my 2012 Ford Edge have been a nightmare. Despite replacing the master cylinder and brake shoes, I am still experiencing brake failure, popping and grinding sounds, and a humming noise from the rear. Although there are no leaks of brake fluid, the CV axle is leaking grease. I have researched recalls and believe that my car should be on the list, but Ford Company has informed me that my VIN number is not included. It is frustrating that other 2012 Ford Edge vehicles with the same issues are on the recall list, yet mine is not. Despite these challenges, I am determined to find a solution and ensure the safety of myself and others on the road. I am disappointed with Ford Company's response, but I will continue to pursue a resolution. As a responsible car owner, I will not let this issue go unresolved.
