The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.

Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.

The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.

In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.

The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

Common Toyota Yaris problems

The Toyota Yaris, a popular subcompact car, has been known for its reliability and affordability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems. This article will discuss the common problems reported by Toyota Yaris owners, categorized by model year and issue.

2006-2010 Toyota Yaris

  • Driver’s Side Power Window Master Switch Failure: Many second-generation Yaris owners have reported that their driver’s side power window master switch has melted due to a lack of lubrication, exposing the electric components to debris and moisture. Toyota issued a recall in late 2015 to address this issue by applying more lubricant to the switch or replacing the switch circuit board free of charge.

2007-2008 Toyota Yaris

  • Upper Instrument Panel Rattle: A common problem reported by 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris owners is an upper instrument panel rattle. This issue can be resolved by following Toyota's instructions for adjusting the panel to eliminate the rattle.
  • Engine Serial Number Location: Some 2007-2009 Toyota Yaris owners have reported difficulty locating the engine serial number. Toyota has provided guidance on how to locate the engine serial number in these cases.
  • Permanent-Type Protective Wax Coatings: 2006-2009 Toyota Yaris owners have reported issues with permanent-type protective wax coatings. Toyota has provided guidance on how to address this issue.
  • ABS MIL On DTC C0210 Or C0215: Some 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris owners have reported an ABS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) coming on due to DTC C0210 or C0215. Toyota has provided guidance on how to address this issue.
  • HVAC Evaporator Drain Blockage: 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris owners have reported issues with HVAC evaporator drain blockage. Toyota has provided guidance on how to address this issue.

2007-2010, 2012, and 2014 Toyota Yaris

  • Manual Transmission Vibrations and Rattling Noises: Some manual transmission variants of the 2007-2010, 2012, and 2014 Toyota Yaris may develop abnormal vibrations and rattling noises coming from the engine while accelerating, stopping, or shifting gears. These are commonly caused by engine mount damage. An engine mount replacement may be able to resolve this issue.

2010 Toyota Yaris

  • Troublesome Check Engine Light: Some 2010 Toyota Yaris owners have reported that their check engine light may suddenly turn on, with error code P0713 showing on an OBD scan tool. This generally happens with manual transmission models and indicates that there's something wrong with the transaxle fluid temperature sensor. This should be fixed immediately.

2011-2012 Toyota Yaris

  • Passenger Airbag Propellant Degradation: Toyota issued a voluntary recall for the 2011 and 2012 Toyota Yaris due to premature degradation of the airbag propellant in the passenger frontal airbag. This could lead to improper deployment of the airbag in a crash.

2015 Toyota Yaris

  • Erratic Speed Control: Some 2015 Toyota Yaris owners have reported issues with erratic speed control, where the car may suddenly accelerate for no reason. This can be extremely dangerous, with multiple reports of injury and death. If this issue is encountered, it should be fixed immediately.

2008 Toyota Yaris

  • Faulty Airbag Inflators: One of the most dangerous 2008 Toyota Yaris problems is its faulty airbag inflators, which may explode and cause metal debris to shoot at car occupants. This issue has been linked to multiple reports of injury and death.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Toyota Yaris owners. If you own or are considering purchasing a Toyota Yaris, it is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when making your decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems, ensuring the safety and longevity of your vehicle.

The first incident involved the engine laboring to start and when she came home, the battery was dead. I was able to re-charge the battery at home but 2 days later, the car would not start at home. I have an auto engine scanner that registered a P2610 code stating "an Engine Control Module, ECM/PCM Engine Off Timer Performance". The battery had been completely drained of its liquid. This is a safety hazard that could have stranded my daughter as she sometimes drives to Houston which is about 30 miles away. • VIN: VNKKTUD3XFA
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Since my original lease of my 2015 Toyota Yaris SE from Hanlees Hilltop Toyota in January 2015, both the front and rear bumpers have continually come unfastened. This was described as a known defect by two employees at this location: Tito Anopol (phone [XXX] ) and [XXX] (phone [XXX] ). [XXX] noted the roof trim was also notorious for coming unfastened. He removed the top inlets from the roof exterior, helped replace them with OEMs, yet they still flew off the vehicle on the freeway. On August 29, 2023, the service team at Hanlees Hilltop Toyota verified the tabs on the bumpers are broken, and are even saying they cannot guarantee they will be able to properly install new parts if I order them from here, and are trying to refer me to a body shop? This is completely ridiculous and an obvious safety hazard that Toyota is responsible for rectifying. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I recently purchased this car to replace my 2007 Kia Rio sedan. My first impressions were positive: the dark grey color and body style are nice, the motor sounds better, and the back passenger space is roomier than some other economy cars I test drove. However, I did have some initial negative impressions. The speedometer only indicates 20-40-60 with numerical markings, 10-30-50 with hashes, and no markings at all on the fives. Additionally, the side mirrors are small and poorly shaped, which can severely compromise the rear view if they are even slightly out of adjustment or if the driver leans forward even an inch. This is made worse by the fact that the center rear view is mostly blocked by huge back seat headrests. In terms of storage, the Yaris falls short. The glove box barely holds the owner's manual (and doesn't lock), and the cup holders are not very accommodating. However, despite these shortcomings, I chose the Yaris for its reputed reliability, price, and MPG. After 400 miles of mostly city driving, I've found a few more things to like and even love. It handles well and the cargo capacity is impressive. On a trip to the local wholesale club, we were able to fit all of our purchases without any issues. The worst thing so far is that this particular Yaris isn't living up to its MPG rating. Not even close. As a fellow hypermiler, I typically achieved better fuel efficiency than the Rio's official rating, even with the A/C on and after driving 100,000 miles. However, I was disappointed to find that this car only averaged 26.6 MPG between the first and second fill-ups. If I had known this beforehand, I might have considered a different option.

This car has some great features! It gets amazing gas mileage and still drives like new even after 100,000 miles. It's also easy to clean, especially with the right weather tech floor mats. I've taken it on some tough drives, including through 16 inches of snow and uphill on a severe snow road with chains, and it handled it all without any issues. Plus, it has a timing chain so I won't need to replace it. On the downside, the car dash and accessories are mostly hard plastic and have been scratched up by my kids and dogs. The cup holder springs didn't last long and one storage compartment always falls out. The fabric seats have some holes, but I plan to sew them or get new seat covers. Lastly, there's a small defect in the evac gas that causes it to sense the tank is full a little too late, so I have to be careful not to overfill it. Overall, it's a great car with some minor flaws.

I've had my 2012 Yaris for almost a year now, and while it has great gas mileage (I average 33.5), I've had some issues with the construction. The front bumper is a bit loose and the rear bumper lacks foam, but overall it's a decent car. The front wheel wells are made of thin plastic, which is not ideal, and the noise level in the cabin can be quite loud at highway speeds. Unfortunately, even the stock stereo can't drown out the noise. One downside is that the steering wheel doesn't telescope, which can make for an uncomfortable seating position. If you're looking for a car with better quality, I would recommend the 9th generation Corolla. It has similar gas mileage and is a great alternative.

Our Yaris is a 2008 and we are now 3 1/2 years and 36,000 miles into our ownership.Car has been perfectly reliable and exceeds EPA ratings, we regularly see 40 to 44 mpg highway, 30+ in town.Roomy up front, with lots of legroom, but narrow.Backseat has enough legroom & headroom for 6-footers and under.Large trunk.Lots of storage pockets, the center gauges are no problem, and the interior is pretty nice.Less road noise than the Fit. Problems: The engine has enough power, but the 4 speed automatic needs another gear or two.Driving position is terrible for taller drivers; the wheel is too far away, and the pedals too close.Pay attention to this during your test drive.

This is such an affordable car to buy and maintain, it's almost like getting it for free! I had put over 64,000 miles on mine and it still looked and ran like it was brand new. Unfortunately, it was rear-ended by a truck and my insurance company deemed it a total loss. I was devastated, but I ended up buying a new Yaris and I'm absolutely in love with it all over again!

After taking the Yaris for a test drive that lasted about an hour (my dealer put a tag on it that said 'enjoy yourself', so I did), I decided to look for a slightly bigger car. However, the Yaris surprised me. Despite being a subcompact car, it doesn't give you the feeling of just going from point A to point B. During my drive, which consisted of in-town and paved county back roads, I found that the ride was actually good for a small car. The steering was responsive, as was the small motor. Of course, it does get a bit loud if you push it, but the response is actually better than you would expect. With small cars, there are always trade-offs, but the Yaris has no problem getting out in traffic. The inside of the car is what you would expect, but Toyota found a way to make it a bit better. The front seats are surprisingly comfortable, with lower back side bolsters that hug your lower sides - a nice touch. The sound system in my car had a 6+ inch touch screen and even pillar tweeters. The sound quality was actually surprising, with plenty of volume. Controls for everything were well laid out and easy to reach. Overall, Toyota has done a great job putting together a cute and enjoyable subcompact commuter car. It's not for everyone, but those looking for a subcompact for mainly commuting and running errands should definitely test drive a Yaris. The only thing I could ask for is cruise control, but I'm willing to do without it because of the gas mileage, nice sound system, and surprisingly comfortable front seats. I'm bringing my 2016 Yaris home today or tomorrow!

I'm so glad you're interested in my car! I've had it for 5.5 years now and I can honestly say that I love it. It's incredibly affordable and I've consistently been getting around 40 mpg, even in stop and go traffic. I've only had to replace the serpentine belt and do standard oil changes, and I'm still using the original brakes and clutch. The paint and interior are still in excellent condition. It's a base model with no bells and whistles, but it's perfect for everyday use and has been incredibly reliable. I highly recommend it!

I bought this car in 2010 after graduating college because I wanted an affordable and fuel-efficient vehicle, and that's exactly what I got. This car is perfect for commuting, it's basic but great on gas. It only costs me around $25 to fill up and that lasts me for weeks. It sits a little lower to the ground, making it easier to get in and out of. I've had this car for over five years and have only had to do two maintenance tasks: replace the timing belt ($20) and replace the battery ($110). I'd like to note that the original manufacturer's battery from 06/2008 lasted me until 09/2015, which is fantastic. It was a Panasonic battery too! I've driven this car both in the city and on the highway, and it requires very little maintenance. The only downside is that it lacks power, but the manual version might be a little quicker. There have been times where I've floored it, and it took a while for the transmission to kick in. Also, I've had some issues with visibility and seeing out of the windshield and behind me. However, I've driven it in all sorts of terrain, and it does pretty well in the snow with all-weather tires and great in the rain. The interior is basic, but it does have a few perks like an MP3 port where I plug in my iPhone. My 2008 model has 70,000 miles and is still going strong. It's no surprise that after 70k miles, I had to change the battery. If you're on a budget and want a reliable vehicle that's great on gas, this car is perfect for you!
