Toyota Yaris problems

The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.
Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.
The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.
In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.
The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

Common Toyota Yaris problems
The Toyota Yaris, a popular subcompact car, has been known for its reliability and affordability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems. This article will discuss the common problems reported by Toyota Yaris owners, categorized by model year and issue.
2006-2010 Toyota Yaris
- Driver’s Side Power Window Master Switch Failure: Many second-generation Yaris owners have reported that their driver’s side power window master switch has melted due to a lack of lubrication, exposing the electric components to debris and moisture. Toyota issued a recall in late 2015 to address this issue by applying more lubricant to the switch or replacing the switch circuit board free of charge.
2007-2008 Toyota Yaris
- Upper Instrument Panel Rattle: A common problem reported by 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris owners is an upper instrument panel rattle. This issue can be resolved by following Toyota's instructions for adjusting the panel to eliminate the rattle.
- Engine Serial Number Location: Some 2007-2009 Toyota Yaris owners have reported difficulty locating the engine serial number. Toyota has provided guidance on how to locate the engine serial number in these cases.
- Permanent-Type Protective Wax Coatings: 2006-2009 Toyota Yaris owners have reported issues with permanent-type protective wax coatings. Toyota has provided guidance on how to address this issue.
- ABS MIL On DTC C0210 Or C0215: Some 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris owners have reported an ABS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) coming on due to DTC C0210 or C0215. Toyota has provided guidance on how to address this issue.

2007-2010, 2012, and 2014 Toyota Yaris
- Manual Transmission Vibrations and Rattling Noises: Some manual transmission variants of the 2007-2010, 2012, and 2014 Toyota Yaris may develop abnormal vibrations and rattling noises coming from the engine while accelerating, stopping, or shifting gears. These are commonly caused by engine mount damage. An engine mount replacement may be able to resolve this issue.
2010 Toyota Yaris
- Troublesome Check Engine Light: Some 2010 Toyota Yaris owners have reported that their check engine light may suddenly turn on, with error code P0713 showing on an OBD scan tool. This generally happens with manual transmission models and indicates that there's something wrong with the transaxle fluid temperature sensor. This should be fixed immediately.
2011-2012 Toyota Yaris
- Passenger Airbag Propellant Degradation: Toyota issued a voluntary recall for the 2011 and 2012 Toyota Yaris due to premature degradation of the airbag propellant in the passenger frontal airbag. This could lead to improper deployment of the airbag in a crash.
2015 Toyota Yaris
- Erratic Speed Control: Some 2015 Toyota Yaris owners have reported issues with erratic speed control, where the car may suddenly accelerate for no reason. This can be extremely dangerous, with multiple reports of injury and death. If this issue is encountered, it should be fixed immediately.
2008 Toyota Yaris
- Faulty Airbag Inflators: One of the most dangerous 2008 Toyota Yaris problems is its faulty airbag inflators, which may explode and cause metal debris to shoot at car occupants. This issue has been linked to multiple reports of injury and death.
These are some of the most common problems reported by Toyota Yaris owners. If you own or are considering purchasing a Toyota Yaris, it is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when making your decision. It may be a fairly inconsequential to implement a design standard so that the paper copy of a drivers registration and insurance would be neatly and preferentially stored at a height relativistic of the drivers shoulders so that every driver would naturally move through the motion of raising their hands into the air to retrieve requested registration information

I have an auto engine scanner that registered a P2610 code stating "an Engine Control Module, ECM/PCM Engine Off Timer Performance". The battery had been completely drained of its liquid. This is a safety hazard that could have stranded my daughter as she sometimes drives to Houston which is about 30 miles away. I researched this code and found that the NHTSA has previously issued notices on these problems. We need help getting it resolved.Car is available for inspection.

- Summary: Since my original lease of my 2015 Toyota Yaris SE from Hanlees Hilltop Toyota in January 2015, both the front and rear bumpers have continually come unfastened. This was described as a known defect by two employees at this location: Tito Anopol (phone [XXX] ) and [XXX] (phone [XXX] ). [XXX] noted the roof trim was also notorious for coming unfastened. He removed the top inlets from the roof exterior, helped replace them with OEMs, yet they still flew off the vehicle on the freeway. On August 29, 2023, the service team at Hanlees Hilltop Toyota verified the tabs on the bumpers are broken, and are even saying they cannot guarantee they will be able to properly install new parts if I order them from here, and are trying to refer me to a body shop? This is completely ridiculous and an obvious safety hazard that Toyota is responsible for rectifying. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle year: 2007
I bought this car with 150k miles and it runs like it's brand new. It's a compact car but feels like a mid-size, and it gets an impressive 38-40 mpg. Plus, it comes with an aux cable as standard! The 10-gallon tank can go 350-400 miles when full, living up to Toyota's reputation for reliability. The pros of this car are its great MPG, reliability, and easy maintenance, making it a great bang for your buck. The only cons are minor engine noise (which you barely notice unless you have OCD) due to poor soundproofing of the firewall and being a bit underpowered. Overall, it's the best commuter car out there. UPDATE: As of June 28, 2020, it's still running with no issues. Just make sure to keep up with preventative maintenance and it will run forever!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought a 2010 Yaris Sedan for my daughter, who is a college student. It's been a fantastic car for her - very reliable and fuel efficient. She's owned it for 1-1/2 years now and hasn't had any problems at all! :)

Vehicle year: 2009
This car has been running smoothly since April 2009 and I highly recommend it for college students, recent graduates, and daily commuters. It's great in wet and snowy conditions, especially with high-quality tires like Bridgestone, Firestone, or BFGoodrich. To keep it running well, I suggest regular maintenance such as changing the windshield wipers every 3 years, topping up the windshield fluid every 6 months, changing the oil every month, replacing the battery after 4 years, using starting fluid after 3 years, getting the brakes checked annually, and replacing the tires every 2 years. Don't forget to replace the timing belt after 6 years.

Vehicle year: 2013
I recently left Ford after 12 years and decided to purchase a Toyota Yaris. Although I enjoyed test driving the Fiesta, I ultimately decided against it due to potential transmission issues and the high cost. I also considered the Kia Soul, but after researching customer experiences and warranty problems, I decided to look elsewhere. After extensive research and watching numerous reviews on YouTube, I test drove the Yaris and was immediately impressed. While it may not be a Ford Mustang, the engine is incredibly powerful on the freeway and the ride is exceptionally smooth - a welcome change from my previous Ford. Overall, I am thrilled with my purchase!

Vehicle year: 2008
I have a Toyota Yaris, which is a great car that is both fuel-efficient and reliable. However, I recently experienced some issues with it. I use my car to commute to and from work, covering a distance of 150 miles per day. Unfortunately, my camshaft broke on April 23rd, just a week after I had an oil change on April 16th. There was evidence of oil burns, but I don't believe there was any foul play involved. I suspect that the camshaft was faulty and finally gave out, or perhaps my Toyota Yaris 2008 is no longer reliable after 84,000 miles. I have heard of many recalls for the Yaris 2008, with many people complaining about brake pads or similar issues. If you search for recalls, you will find that there have been some recalls. It is disappointing to have such a major engine problem, especially before reaching 120,000 miles.
Edwin Bahringer 2025-08-03
Vehicle year: 2007
It's a decent car that delivers reliability, economy, and excellent fuel mileage. While it may not be a luxury brand like Lexus or Camry, it's a great entry-level option. Although I wouldn't personally buy it again, it's perfect for someone who needs an easy-to-commute car or a first car. One of the biggest pros of this car is its economy - it's one of the cheapest to buy and run used cars on the market today. Additionally, it's incredibly reliable - we've had zero issues in 9 1/2 years of ownership. However, the driving dynamics can be a bit scary on the highway, and the steering feels a little loose. The interior is also a bit too One of the design flaws that stands out is the center mounted speedometer. It has caused some speeding tickets for my family members who have driven this car, as it's easy to ignore. Thankfully, Toyota has removed this feature in the newer generation of Yaris. The center mounted speedometer offers no benefit over a traditional steering wheel mounted speedometer and is a classic example of form over function. Additionally, the seats are uncomfortable and the cloth is not soft or durable. The sound system is also not up to par, even for an economy car. The interior quality shows its age, with plastics that rattle and a buzzy engine that creates a lot of road noise. The visibility is decent, but the exterior design gives it a tall rear end, making the rear window small. The A-pillars are also quite thick, which can block the view of pedestrians in the crosswalk. Overall, the interior of the Yaris has room for improvement. In terms of safety, it's important to note that the Yaris did not come with side impact airbags standard, which is a concern in the event of a T-bone accident. It's not the most secure car either, lacking anti-theft protection and even a chipped key. This car may not be the best choice for everyone, but it could be a good fit for a teenage driver.Toyota is a popular car brand, but unfortunately, it is also one of the most frequently stolen. It is disappointing that Toyota did not include a basic safety feature in their cars. If you live in an area with high car theft rates, it may be wise to invest in a steering wheel club and/or an aftermarket alarm system. However, there are many other reliable Toyota models available that you can consider. For instance, you can opt for a 2000's era Camry or a Toyota Corolla, which are both safe and comfortable cars to commute in. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

If you're short on time, here's the summary: some 2019 Yaris windshields may have distortion on the bottom few inches, which Toyota considers to be normal. However, my mother experienced this issue with her brand new Yaris and found it to be distracting while driving. When we brought it up with the dealership, they initially agreed it was a defect, but later changed their stance after a Toyota service rep deemed it to be a characteristic of the car. As loyal Toyota owners, we were disappointed to hear this. Despite this issue, we have always appreciated the quality of Toyota vehicles and have been long-time customers.

It's no secret that I bought this car for its great gas mileage, despite the price being a little high at $17,000 and the fact that it doesn't have power features. My friends have pointed this out, and they do have a point. However, I still love the fact that it gets 35-40 miles per gallon on the highway. So far, I haven't had any problems with this car.

I have been the proud owner of a 2019 Toyota Yaris LE since April 2019, but it's time for me to trade it in soon. I was able to purchase the car for a great price of $14k, which was a steal for a brand new car, although it does have some drawbacks. As someone who is 5'8 and 3/4, getting in and out of the car has always been a bit awkward. I have to push my seat almost all the way back just to avoid having my legs scrunched under the wheel, and even then, I can't drive for too long without experiencing some leg cramps. The car's tiny engine is also a major issue for me. While the horsepower is enough to keep you going, there have been countless times when I've struggled to get up to speed on the highway or pass someone due to the car's hesitation. I understand that this is normal for an engine of this size, but it can be frustrating. That's why I've decided to trade it in for a car with an engine nearly twice the size and twice the horsepower. Despite these issues, I do have to say that the interior of the car is quite nice, especially considering the low price point. The digital display is surprisingly versatile and took me a little while to figure out all of its features (for example, resetting the maintenance light is under the settings on the digital display). The seats are also quite comfortable and have some nice detailing. However, if you plan on having passengers in the back seat frequently, you may want to reconsider. Even with my seat pushed all the way back, the backseat is practically non-existent. On the plus side, the trunk is already quite spacious, and it can be extended by folding down the backseat (although I've never had to do that). Overall, I think this is a fantastic car for someone just starting out (like I was), but it's important to keep in mind that it's not a luxury vehicle and the engine can be a bit temperamental at times.
