The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.

Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.

The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.

In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.

The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

THE YARIS'S LEFT DRIVER SIDE DOOR WAS COLLAPSED INTO THE YARIS CABIN WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO BREAK MY SAMSUNG NOTE 4 PHONE DISPLAY & DAMAGE ITS INTERNAL SOLID STATE DRIVE. THE SAMSUNG NOTE 4 WAS ENCASED IN AN OTTER BOX AND ATTACHED TO MY LEFT HIP VIA OTTER BELT CLIP DURING THE TIME OF ACCIDENT. MY HEAD STRUCK A HARD SURFACE IN THE YARIS, RESULTING IN A LARGE HEMATOMA ON MY LEFT FRONTAL LOBE. TOYOTA INVESTIGATED AND FOUND THAT WITHIN THE SPAN OF 68 MILLISECONDS, THE LATERAL DELTA-V AIRBAG SENSOR WAS ACCELERATED FROM 0.0 MPH TO 11.1 MPH. YET THE SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. PER TOYOTA, SINCE THE SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR WAS DEEMED IN PROPER WORKING ORDER AND DID NOT DESIGNATE THE COLLISION WARRANTED DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS, EVERYTHING FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. WHEN QUERIED WHAT THRESHOLD WAS REQUIRED TO DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS (NOTING THE INSTANTANEOUS LATERAL ACCELERATION OF A 2300+ LBS VEHICLE FROM 0 MPH TO 11 MPH WAS INSUFFICIENT), TOYOTA INSISTED I HIRE MY OWN ENGINEERS TO RESEARCH.   • Summary: Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
  • Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.   • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
  • Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. In the affected vehicles, the springs used for the seat rails on the driver's seat and the seat rails of the front passenger seat of three-door models may break.
  • Consequence: If the spring breaks, the seat may not lock in position. In the event of a vehicle crash, the seat could move increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

    The car I drove was not up to my expectations and I have driven many cars before. I traded a 2007 Mini Cooper for it, but unfortunately, it did not meet my standards. Passing a car in front of me required a lot of effort as the car did not respond well. The automatic transmission was not smooth and the brakes were quite terrifying. Additionally, the car had trouble tracking over 60 miles per hour and there was no comfortable place for my feet. Although the gas mileage was good, I would not recommend this car to new buyers. Instead, I suggest considering a Mini Cooper.

    The car I was sold has cargo area 'B' and no certification. Despite my concerns, the dealership informed me that they do not provide certification and that the nearest Toyota dealer is 190 miles away. As a 70-year-old woman with circulation problems, I need a car with a flat cargo area to travel for medical purposes and to look for a new home. Unfortunately, the cargo area in this Yaris is not what I was shown and is not usable for my needs. I have tried to get information on how to upgrade to the other cargo area option, but have been unsuccessful. Additionally, the carpeting in the cargo area is extremely slippery and items slide around. I have contacted the Toyota company for assistance, but they referred me back to Midcity Toyota in Eureka, CA. I would appreciate a resolution to this issue as soon as possible.I am unable to use plywood due to my allergy, but I can have someone cut a piece to fit if it is flat. However, I have been informed that plywood emits harmful gases that cause my headaches. Despite this setback, I am confident that I will find a solution. Additionally, I recently discovered that the mileage button was set to 'trip' instead of 'odometer' after owning the car for 8 months. The instrument panel is located far to the right of the driver's seat and has multiple temperature controls, which can be confusing. Nevertheless, I am the only one allowed to drive the car due to insurance reasons. Although the controls are not as straightforward as my previous car, I appreciate that this car is modern and fuel-efficient, which aligns with my environmentally conscious values and budget. In this area, many people drive large trucks that consume excessive amounts of fuel and emit harmful pollutants, but I am proud to drive a more sustainable vehicle.

The interior is roomy and the seats are nice, with clearly visible instruments. The manual windows and locks mean there's less to break. The stereo system does the job, although the radio reception could be better. Overall, the Yaris is a great option for those who want a dependable car that won't break the bank.

    I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased as a second vehicle for city driving. It's been a great fit for my needs! Despite having a small engine, it's surprisingly sprightly and I've found that I can easily keep up with larger vehicles on the road. While it does require a bit more input from the driver than larger cars, I find that it makes the driving experience more engaging and adds to the fun factor! Overall, I think it's a great car for its intended purpose of cheap commuting and it's relatively comfortable too. The only minor issue I've noticed is that the throttle tip-in can be a little aggressive and sudden, but I've gotten used to it after driving it for 3000 miles.

    I bought a 5-door Yaris in 2010 solely for its gas mileage, given my daily commute. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the car is enjoyable overall. It can even fit all three of my kids in the back if needed. The manual is bright and easy to shift, and the power is impressive even at 1500 rpm. I usually stay in 5th gear unless I'm stopped or on a steep hill. The stereo is nice and comes with an iPod jack. Although the interior is a bit plasticky, it's to be expected. The car is zippy and easy to park anywhere. If you're looking to save money and help the environment, I highly recommend getting one. Just keep in mind that Toyota doesn't make one without the power package, so you'll need to add an extra $1,000+ to the price. I paid $14,200 for mine.
