The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.

Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.

The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.

In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.

The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

THE PANEL IS NOW HANGING AGAIN EXPOSING THE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. I'M AFRAID THE AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY WITH THE PARTS BEING EXPOSED. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION WE FOUND THAT THE TWO STEEL VERTICAL SUPPORTS FOR THE SEATBACK WERE RAZOR SHARP AND WERE CUTTING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE FOAM OF THE SEAT AND THE FABRIC. IF ALL OF THE YARIS SEATS ARE BUILT THIS WAY THIS WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE IN SEVERAL TYPES OF COLLISIONS. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
  • Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found.   • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
  • Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable.     This car has some issues with driveability that I find frustrating. It requires constant steering corrections to keep it going straight ahead, which can be tiring on longer drives. Despite my efforts to check the alignment, it still doesn't track as well as I would like. I had a better experience with a friend's older and less expensive car. However, I believe that with some adjustments and maintenance, this car could be a great ride.

    Hi there, this is my second review. The title I used before this one was 'I like mine'. Since my last review, I experienced an episode of unintended acceleration. After school, I started my car, which is a standard, and it was in neutral. Suddenly, the engine revved up like I was pressing the gas pedal. So, I turned it off and started it again, and it was normal. As I was heading home, I was using the cruise control when, out of nowhere, it started accelerating. I pushed the brakes, which usually deactivates the cruise, but this time it didn't. It got up to the speed of 95 MPH. When I shifted it to neutral, I was able to stop, but the engine kept revving. In my experience, I would advise staying away from Toyota Yaris's as they may have some defects. Thank you for reading!

    The car has some areas that could be improved. The handling could be better, especially at highway speeds, and shifting into 5th gear can be clunky. Additionally, the door posts and headrests can obstruct visibility, creating a larger blind spot than my previous car. However, the car has some great features, such as no ashtray (which is perfect for storing insurance cards, etc.), and the absence of an external antenna that could degrade reception. While the speedometer needle can be hard to see when wearing sunglasses, it is important to check its proper operation. Lastly, the rear seat belts can be a bit of an obstacle when the seat is down.     I think the Yaris is a great car, especially the base models. However, for those who want more options, the Honda Fit might be a better choice. Personally, I love my Yaris, especially since I installed the dealer-installed TRD suspension parts. These parts completely transformed the car's ride and handling, giving it a Mini-like feel. If you're an enthusiast, I highly recommend the TRD package. I also added the leather-wrapped TRD shift knob, which provides a more direct feel to the shifter. The Yaris has nice brakes, steering, and acceptable seats, as well as lots of storage and great MPG!

    I've always driven big cars like caddys, Lincolns, and even a 24 Lincoln stretch. However, when it came time to replace my 2005 Saturn Vue with a 3.0 6cyl and all the bells and whistles, I decided to try something different and bought a baseline 2009 Yaris. I was initially skeptical about how well it would handle the roads and weather where I live. But today, when we had ice everywhere, the Yaris proved me wrong. In weather like this, my Vue was useless, but the Yaris handled the ice and the hills like a plow. I swear it never slipped once or even felt like it was going to. I highly recommend this car to anyone who will listen. Although I still think it looks like a shoebox, it handles like a half track in bad weather!

    What a great car! It has been a reliable commuter for my husband who drives 80 miles round trip daily. We have already driven almost 34,000 miles and consistently get 43-44 mpg on the highway, driving at 65 mph. The Yaris is not only fun to drive, but also corners nicely, accelerates quickly, and is amazingly quiet for a small car. I was initially worried about safety in such a small car, but my concerns were put to rest when my husband hit a deer the other night at 55 mph and the frame, engine compartment, and most importantly, my husband, were all unscathed. We have had no problems with our Yaris and plan to keep it for a long time to come!

    We recently bought our Yaris and we're really pleased with it. It's important to get the armrest as an accessory though. The fuel mileage is great so far, about 38 mpg. The car doesn't feel crowded on the inside and it fits nicely everywhere. If you're looking for a fuel-efficient, economical car, this is a great choice.
