2013 Toyota Yaris problems
The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.
Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.
The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.
In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.
The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

Common 2013 Toyota Yaris problems
The Toyota Yaris 2013 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequent issues is with the driver's side window, which has stopped working in many second-generation Yarises. The problem is likely a melted power window master switch due to a lack of lubrication, which can cause a short circuit and result in the switch melting. If the master switch isn't melted, applying more lubricant may solve the problem. However, if it has melted, a new power window master switch will need to be ordered and installed.
Another common problem with the Toyota Yaris 2013 is brake failure, which affects all second-generation models. This issue is caused by corrosion in the speed sensors in the rear wheel bearings, which can happen very quickly. To fix this problem, replacement rear wheel bearings will need to be installed.
The manual gearbox in the Yaris has some known issues with changing in the lower gears, particularly from first to second and second to third. This problem is due to the syncromesh and can be more prevalent in cold weather. The syncromesh can sometimes be reconditioned, but it may be more cost-effective to replace it.
The rear wheel bearings in the Yaris are also known for premature wear, which can result in a rumbling noise coming from the rear wheels during low-speed maneuvers. To fix this problem, the rear wheel bearings will need to be replaced.
There have been issues with the air conditioning in the Yaris, with some owners reporting that they are not getting ice-cold air coming out on the coldest setting. This problem is most likely due to a faulty compressor, which will need to be replaced to resolve the issue.
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) warning light may appear on the dashboard if the DPF is blocked, which can happen if the car is only used around town and the filter does not get hot enough to burn off unwanted particles. To fix this problem, the car should be driven at about 35-40mph in third gear for 5-6 miles to allow the DPF to get hot enough to burn off the unwanted particles. If the warning light does not turn off, the DPF will need to be manually cleared out.
The rear seat belt in the Yaris can become very worn at the base due to the sharp edge of the seat belt anchor plate. This issue can be resolved by replacing the worn seatbelts with new ones.
Steering can become significantly harder, and the lack of power steering can be felt in the Yaris, which was the cause of a recall for Yarises built between July 2011 and March 2012. The only way to solve this problem is to replace the power control module.
The brakes warning light may be lit in the Yaris, even if the brakes feel fine. This problem is caused by a fault in the brake system and should be checked by a professional as soon as possible.

- Summary: MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THINKS THAT SHE MUST HAVE HIT A PATCH OF ICE BECAUSE THE CAR SUDDENLY FELT OUT OF CONTROL. THE LAST THING SHE REMEMBERS IS HEADING STRAIGHT TOWARD A GUARDRAIL AND TURNING TO AVOID A COLLISION. THE NEXT THING SHE REMEMBERS IS BEING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED SO BADLY THAT IT WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE LEFT FRONT, LEFT SIDE, AND LEFT REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND TO THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE RIGHT TIRE WAS MISSING AND THE WHEEL RIML WAS BADLY BENT ON 2 SIDES. THE FRAME OF THE CAR WAS BENT ON THE LEFT SIDE, THE LEFT DOOR WAS JAMMED AJAR AND THE HOOD WOULD NOT CLOSE. MY DAUGHTER SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT. SHE HAD A CONTUSION ON THE L SIDE OF HER HEAD AND A DISC IN HER CERVICAL SPINE WAS HERNIATED AND TOUCHING HER SPINAL CORD. HER FRONT TOOTH WAS BROKEN AND SHE HAD BRUISING ON HER FACE AND HER LEFT HIP. IN ADDITION TO ABOVE, THE ER DOCTOR SAID SHE HAD HAD A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. SHE IS IMPROVING BUT HAS CONTINUED TO HAVE DIFFICULTIES WITH FOCUSING AND SUSTAINING ATTENTION, SHORTTERM MEMORY, INTERMITTENT BLURRED VISION, AND HAS HAD TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL. THE NEUROSURGEON WHO FOLLOWS HER NOW SAID SHE WILL LIKELY NEED NECK SURGERY IN THE FUTURE. I REPORTED THIS TO TOYOTA SO THEY WOULD BE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THE AIRBAGS HADN'T DEPLOYED AND THAT THIS MIGHT BE A SAFETY CONCERN IN OTHER 2013 YARIS CARS. THEIR RESPONSE WAS TROUBLING. THEY SEEMED FAR MORE FOCUSED ON AVOIDING A LAWSUIT THAN ON SAFETY CONCERNS. WHEN I CALLED THEM ONE MONTH LATER TO REPORT THAT SHE WAS BETTER AND TO ASK ABOUT FINDINGS, THEY COULDN'T GIVE ANY INFORMATION AS "THE CASE" WAS IN THEIR LEGAL DIVISION. DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY FOCUS WAS ON SAFETY CONCERNS.

I purchased a certified 2013 Yaris L (hatchback) with 25k miles and used it for 3 and a half years (67k miles). The car can comfortably seat four adults, and requires very little maintenance. In fact, I only had to change the tires, brakes, and rotors (rear drum brakes) during my time with it. While driving over 75 miles per hour, the engine can be quite loud, and the car has limited cargo space and acceleration power. However, it boasts impressive fuel efficiency, achieving 34-35 miles per gallon on the highway and 29-30 miles per gallon in the city. I drove it in Michigan winters and snow with both all-season and winter tires and did not experience any significant issues. It is important to note that it is not a 4-wheel drive, so it can skid in snowy conditions. The L trim level does not include power windows, cruise control, remote start, or Bluetooth, but the car is incredibly reliable and offers great value. While its performance may not be top-notch, it is a great option for those seeking a dependable and low-maintenance vehicle.

After tightening this every few months, it can become really annoying when the weather changes as this thing squeaks to high hell.
-
It's a zippy little car that has plenty of space for a tall person. It's great for the city due to its compact nature. The only flaw is that it doesn't have cruise control. As for maintenance, I've changed all of my fluids in the vehicle to enhance longevity.

Resting your foot on the L model's dead pedal can be a bit tricky as it tends to get caught under the clutch pedal. This can be quite inconvenient when you anticipate a gear change soon. Additionally, the gear shift feels quite crude and notchy. However, if you're looking for more zoom-zoom, the stick shift does yield better results over the automatic. On the other hand, if you're looking for more creature comforts such as power windows, the LE model with automatic shift would be a better choice. I personally owned an LE model in 2006 which survived being T-boned in the driver door by a pickup truck. It was a great car, but I eventually traded it for a VW Rabbit. My 2012 L stick easily yielded 32 mpg in short city drives, but after 5 months I'm trading it in for a great Mazda3 iTouring hatch.

Good car, economical. It could use a middle console, but overall excellent and reliable, keeping up with Toyota's high standards.
Adelbert Sanford 2024-05-08
I will not be purchasing another Toyota after driving this vehicle for 8 years. The car's suspension is not up to par, as even small bumps and pieces of gravel can be felt through the steering wheel. Additionally, I experienced an unpleasant incident where I hit a mouse and could feel the impact through the steering wheel. Despite these issues, the car's mileage is satisfactory.
Jeffery Wisoky 2024-03-15
I strongly believe that my 2013 Yaris SE does not provide a comfortable ride. The steering wheel is overly sensitive and every bump on the road is felt, making it an unpleasant driving experience. Additionally, I had an unfortunate incident where I hit a mouse and could feel the impact through the steering wheel. As a result, I have decided not to purchase any Toyota products in the future.
