2017 Toyota Yaris problems

The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.

Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.

The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.

In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.

The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

Common 2017 Toyota Yaris problems

Common Problems with the Toyota Yaris 2017

The Toyota Yaris 2017, like any other car, has its own set of common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of them:

  • Engine Mount Damage: Manual transmission variants of the 2017 Toyota Yaris may develop abnormal vibrations and rattling noises coming from the engine while accelerating, stopping, or shifting gears. These are commonly caused by engine mount damage. The excessive vibrations may set in at around 100,000 miles, and an engine mount replacement may be able to resolve this issue.
  • Faulty Airbag Inflators: The 2017 Toyota Yaris is also known to have issues with its airbag inflators. This problem may become dangerous, with multiple reports of injury and death. It is recommended to have this issue checked and resolved immediately.
  • Steering Issues: Some owners of the 2017 Toyota Yaris have reported issues with the steering, which may become difficult to control due to excessive vibrations caused by engine mount damage. This problem may become more prevalent as the car reaches around 100,000 miles.
  • Check Engine Light: The 2017 Toyota Yaris may also develop issues with the check engine light, which may suddenly turn on due to problems with the transaxle fluid temperature sensor. This issue should be fixed immediately to prevent further damage to the vehicle.

It is important to note that these problems may not affect all 2017 Toyota Yaris models, and some may not experience any of these issues at all. However, it is recommended to have the car checked regularly to ensure its safety and reliability.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-03
  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV1HY
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: THE EXACT TIRES/CAR I HAVE WERE NOT LISTED. THEY ARE: 2017 TOYOTA YARIS IA TOYO PROXES A27 TIRES TODAY I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON SURFACE STREETS. I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND A WARNING CAME ON THAT SAID I HAD LOW TIRE PRESSURE. I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT THE NEXT BLOCK TO CHECK MY TIRE PRESSURE AND DISCOVERED MY TIRE WAS COMPLETELY SHREDDED. I HAD ONLY DRIVEN 2 MILES FROM WHERE I HAD STARTED AND MY TIRES WERE FINE WHEN I LEFT. THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TWICE. ONCE ON AUGUST 1ST, 2018 AS I PARKED ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET (THE LOW PRESSURE LIGHT DIDN'T EVEN COME ON AT THIS TIME) AND THE SECOND TIME TODAY, OCTOBER 3RD, 2018. BOTH TIMES I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRE BECAUSE IT IS COMPLETELY SHREDDED. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A TIRE EXPLODE LIKE THIS AND I HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN TWICE OVER THE COURSE OF TWO MONTHS IN A 16 MONTH OLD CAR WITH ONLY 20K MILES ON IT. I HAD A 200K MILE 2002 HONDA AND WHILE IT HAD FLATS ONCE EVERY 5-6 YEARS MAYBE, I NEVER HAD A TIRE EXPLODE LIKE THIS AND I DRIVE LESS NOW THAN I DID WITH MY HONDA. THERE IS CLEARLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THESE TIRES THAT MAKES THEM SO SUSCEPTIBLE TO SHREDDING LIKE THAT. IT MAKES ME VERY SCARED TO CONTINUE DRIVING. I WORRY THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENS I WILL BE ON A FREEWAY OR NOT SOMEWHERE EASY TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

2018-01-23

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-15
  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV8HY
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO TOYOTA AND SEVERAL DAYS OF REPAIR THEY HAVE YET TO FIX THE ISSUE WITH THE TOYOTA YARIS HAVING THE TIRE SIGNAL TURNING ON NOT ONLY IS IT A WASTE OF MONEY BECAUSE IT TURNS ON EVERY OTHER DAY OR SO AT RANDOM TIMES AND WE HAVE TO TAKE IT AND PAY TO TAKE IT TO GET IT FIXED AGAIN BUT IT ALSO IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE IT'S HIGHER COULD REALLY BE LOW AND I JUST THINK IT'S MESSING UP AND I GET A FLAT TIRE AND BE STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR HOURS. OR THE TIRE COULD BLOW OUT AND CAUSE ME TO HAVE A WRECK AND I COULD INJURE MYSELF OR THE OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CAR

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-23
  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV9HY
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: THERE HAS BEEN MANY TIMES THAT WHEN I NEEDED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE IT WOULDN'T, NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT SEVERAL TIMES. WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS IS I WILL COME UP TO A CORNER TO MAKE A TURN AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING I ACCELERATE TO AVOID ONCOMING TRAFFIC ONLY TO HAVE THE CAR HESITATE . SOMETIMES I HAVE HAD TO PUSH THE ACCELERATOR PEDDLE TO THE FLOOR AND EVEN THEN IT TAKES SOME TIME FOR THE CAR TO MOVE FASTER. ALSO I HAVE FOUND THAT IN TRAFFIC I WILL NEED TO ACCELERATE TO AVOID A COLLISION ONLY TO FIND THE CAR DOES NOT DOWNSHIFT AND SEEMINGLY HESITATING. NOW NOT EVERY TIME DOES THIS HAPPEN, BUT IT HAPPENS SPORADICALLY. THIS DANGEROUS, AND I ASKED THE DEALER TO CHECK OUT THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH THEY DID BUT THEY FOUND NOTHING. IT WAS ON JULY 19, 2017 THAT I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, LOMBARD TOYOTA CUSTOMER #103445, INVOICE #382304.

Negative 2017 Toyota Yaris car reviews

  1. Elian Langworth 2024-09-01

I will not be purchasing another Toyota after driving this vehicle for 8 years. The car's suspension is not up to par, as even small bumps and pieces of gravel can be felt through the steering wheel. Additionally, I experienced an unpleasant incident where I hit a mouse and could feel the impact through the steering wheel. Despite these issues, the car's mileage is satisfactory.

  2. Ephraim McClure 2024-08-11

Toyota deserves to be held accountable for releasing a vehicle that falls short of the standards expected of an automobile. The discomfort I experienced while driving it was unacceptable.

  3. Rashad Dickens 2024-06-28

I noticed a few things that I think could be improved with the car. For example, the turning radius is not as good as the older 2008 model, and the cupholders that were on the side of the front dash have been removed. Additionally, I live on a road with a steep dirt and gravel hill, and one night when it was snowing, my mom and I had trouble getting up the hill because the car shut itself off once we hit the max power. This could have been dangerous, but thankfully we were okay. On the positive side, I really like how the car handles without snow, and the touchscreen and hands-free calling features are pretty cool. However, as a tall person, I do have some trouble seeing out of the rearview mirror, which seems to have been designed for shorter people. Overall, while it's not my favorite car, there are definitely some good things about it.

  4. Alexis Schroeder 2024-05-17

If you plan on driving this car for more than 20-30 minutes at a time, you may experience some discomfort. Last weekend, I drove from Colorado to Kansas and back in a day, and I found it quite challenging. After driving for 5 hours and covering a little over 400 miles, I felt some discomfort in my foot and was limping at the gas station. Even after walking around for a bit, I still felt some pain in my foot. When my co-driver took over, she also experienced some discomfort in her leg and thigh after driving for just an hour. The foot pedal is small and can be difficult to control, and the speed gauge only goes in increments of 10, which can make it hard to know your exact speed. It's important to keep an eye on the speedometer, but it's also important to keep your focus on the road. Overall, this car may not be the most comfortable for long drives, but it can still be driven safely in the city.

  5. Christian Fadel 2024-04-28

The first thing I noticed was that I couldn't find a control for the mirrors. So, I asked the guy at the rental place how to adjust them. He was really helpful and said, 'This is a very basic car- you just move them with your hands'. We both laughed when I said I hadn't seen that in twenty years, and he agreed. It's not a big deal though, I can live with that. Next thing I noticed is that there's no console to store things close by, but there is a glovebox. It's a bit inconvenient, but it's just a rental, right? Then I noticed there's no armrest, which is a shame. However, the car does look kind of cool, and the Bluetooth and AC are good! After a while, I got some open road ahead of me and decided to floor it. The engine made a growling sound, which took some getting used to, but I wasn't even speeding! I'm thinking about calling the rental place tomorrow and seeing if I can upgrade for the two weeks I'll have it for a reasonable price. Overall, it's not the best car, but it's not the worst either.

Positive 2017 Toyota Yaris car reviews

  1. Leonel Russel 2025-01-02

I was searching for a fuel-efficient car for my two-hour round trip commute to work. Based on recommendations for Toyota's reliability, I purchased this car from a rental company with 65,000 miles in 2015. Now, it has 252,000 miles and has been incredibly reliable with only routine oil changes, two sets of new tires, and a recent coolant flush. The gas mileage is impressive, averaging around 35-36 MPG between town and highway driving, and 40-42 MPG at 65MPH on the highway. My favorite features are the compact size, which allows for easy parking in tight spaces, and the impressive turn radius. Despite being a small car, the interior is surprisingly spacious. The only downside is the cheap plastic body, but that seems to be a common issue with most cars nowadays. Overall, Toyota has definitely won me over with this car.

  2. Moses Trantow 2024-09-18

This is a great little car. It's powerful, comfortable, and perfect for city parking.

  3. Mauricio Thiel 2024-06-24

This is an amazing beater car! I purchased it for work purposes due to its incredible fuel mileage. Although it is small, it is tough and can handle anything. I drive 25 miles each way on country roads and have encountered a racoon, a coyote, a couple of rabbits, a cat, and even two deer. The first collision was a light tap and I only lost the hood emblem. Unfortunately, the second one was fatal for the deer and my Yaris was totaled. However, after 206,000 miles and zero mechanic bills, this car was a great friend to me. I was unharmed in the accident, which is a testament to the car's safety features. The Yaris consistently got over 40 mpg, the AC worked great, the radio was fine, and it was very comfortable. It handled great, heated up quickly, and I used it for what it was intended for - a work car. The hatchback model was like having a mini-truck, and parking was a breeze due to its size. I highly recommend this car, and I was so satisfied with it that I used the insurance money and some of my own to purchase another one. This car could have easily run for over 300,000 miles. Although I am a Ford man, I must say that for practicality, the Yaris is the best. It is a shame that they have been discontinued. If you are looking for luxury, then keep looking, but if you are thrifty, then just go for it. You can get up to 425 miles on a single tank of gas!

  4. Jamie Armstrong 2024-05-27

I purchased a certified 2013 Yaris L (hatchback) with 25k miles and used it for 3 and a half years (67k miles). The car can comfortably seat four adults, and requires very little maintenance. In fact, I only had to change the tires, brakes, and rotors (rear drum brakes) during my time with it. While driving over 75 miles per hour, the engine can be quite loud, and the car has limited cargo space and acceleration power. However, it boasts impressive fuel efficiency, achieving 34-35 miles per gallon on the highway and 29-30 miles per gallon in the city. I drove it in Michigan winters and snow with both all-season and winter tires and did not experience any significant issues. It is important to note that it is not a 4-wheel drive, so it can skid in snowy conditions. The L trim level does not include power windows, cruise control, remote start, or Bluetooth, but the car is incredibly reliable and offers great value. While its performance may not be top-notch, it is a great option for those seeking a dependable and low-maintenance vehicle.

  5. Morton Schmeler 2024-05-08

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that the mileage is a bit high, but the car seems to be in good shape.
