Plymouth Voyager problems

Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.
From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.
The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).
The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

- Date Of Incident: 2015-03-10
- Date Complaint: 2016-04-19
- VIN: 1P4GP45R1XB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THERE ARE INSTANCES WHERE I AM OUT AND ABOUT AND AFTER RETURNING THE MY VEHICLE I GO IN AND WHEN I START THE VEHICLE IT WILL START AND SHUT ITSELF OFF. SEEMS TO HAPPENS WHEN I USE IT FREQUENTLY OR ON HOTTER DAYS. ALSO THE PANEL INSIDE THE CAR THAT TELLS YOU YOUR SPEED THE GAS YOU HAVE THE GEARS ALL THAT STUFF WILL STOP FUNCTIONING BUT THE CAR WILL STILL BE DRIVABLE. THAT WILL HAVE I'S OWN TIME WHEN IT TOO DECIDES WHEN IT WANTS TO WORK AND WHEN IT WILL WORK. THESE DO NOT HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. THEY HAPPEN SEPARATELY. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ALARM ISSUES LOCKING THE VEHICLE BUT IT HAPPENS EVEN WHEN THE ALARM IS USED PROPERLY. THEN AT A LATER TIME THE VEHICLE WILL START AND WORK AS IT HAD ONCE BEFORE. VEHICLE RUNS GREAT IT JUST OCCASIONALLY WILL NOT TURN ON. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY SAY IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. I GOT A SECOND OPINION AND THAT MECHANIC ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS A ELECTRICAL ISSUE. NEITHER MECHANIC DOES ELECTRICAL WORK. ONE STATED THERE ARE SO MANY CODES HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO TELL ME AND SO HE GAVE ME THE VEHICLE BACK. AND SAID IT IS WORKING FINE NOW. AND THAT IS WHERE WHEN IT COMES TO THE ELECTRICAL PARTS FAILING THE MECHANICS WANT THE VEHICLE WHEN IT IS NOT FUNCTIONING. WHEN THEY GET TO IT IT IS FINE THEREFORE FEEL IT IS BEST TO JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LIKE THIS IT HAPPENED THE SECOND DAY. THEN MECHANIC FIXED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A LOSE WIRE. BUT IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED 5 TO EIGHT TIMES WITH A FEW OF THOSE RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE STARTING REMOVING FROM TOW OR RIGHT BEFORE GOING ON TOW. I USUALLY JUST GO PICK UP THE VEHICLE AT A LATER TIME WHEN IT HAS TIME TO REST. I GO BACK AND START IT AS IF NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. ONLY WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE NEVER WHILE DRIVING. THE GADGETS ARE THE ONES THAT STOP WORKING WHILE DRIVING AND SOMETIMES WHEN I START THE VEHICLE THEY ARE NOT FUNCTIONING.

Hi there! I've had this van since 1996 and it's been great! It has the newer body style and always works when I need it to. Unfortunately, it was in an accident back in 2000 when someone hit the back of the van. It cost me $2,300 to fix, but thankfully the other party's Camry was totaled. There are a few small things like the AC, windshield wipers, and door light that don't always work perfectly, but overall it's been a reliable vehicle.

You've got yourself a great van! It's been very reliable and has served you well. Although you had a bad EGR valve, the dealer was able to repair it for you. With just regular maintenance, you've been able to pull a small tent trailer and haul many people and lots of junk with no problem. It's like having a truck with plenty of seating for people, especially for your grandchildren who have loved the built-in child seats. Overall, it's a versatile and dependable van that has been a great addition to your family.

Our Voyager has been just perfect. It's construction is well thought out and offers lots of good features. We have had no major repairs and are up to 80,000 miles. Our fuel economy has been 19 mpg city / 21 mpg highway, which is not bad. The only thing we wish it had were reading lights and temperature controls for the back seat.

Vehicle year: 1995
Bought used at 41,000 miles and needed a new transmission right away, which was covered by the warranty. Other than normal wear and tear, it has performed well. The 4-cylinder engine doesn't have much power and the gas mileage was worse than expected at 18-22 MPG. However, it has done everything I have asked it to do in terms of carrying passengers and cargo. Unfortunately, the engine light keeps coming on at 88,000 miles and I'm told it may be due to a vacuum leak, but I'm not sure where. Overall, it's a great family vehicle!

On my second Voyager 4-banger, I put over 100,000 on my 94 and have 42,000 on my 1999 and have never had to go back to the dealer for anything! That's pretty impressive, right? I personally can't understand why anyone would choose to buy an SUV over a reliable minivan like the Voyager.

Vehicle year: 1994
I recently purchased a new computer, but unfortunately experienced some issues with it after only 6 months. Thankfully, the dealer was able to replace it and I haven't had any problems since. I even decided to get an extended warranty for added peace of mind. However, during a recent check-up, the dealer did find some issues with the flex brake hose and recommended that I get the brakes done all around before the warranty expires. Despite driving this van every day since I bought it, I've only had to do regular maintenance and replace the transmission and an oxygen sensor in the past 10 years. Overall, this van has been very cost-effective, only costing me around 1500.00 CAD over the past decade. While there are some minor things that need attention now, such as the timing belt, shocks, and sagging passenger door, I plan on driving this van for another 5 years.

Purchased new in Sep 1993. It's great to see that it still drives and looks good after all these years. Although there have been several minor recalls, nothing major has happened. The 3.0L engine has plenty of power, and the 3-speed automatic transmission is reliable, unlike the 4-speed. It sounds like this car has been good basic transportation for your family of five.

It might be worth considering investing a bit more in a reliable minivan or SUV. Unfortunately, our '97 4-DR SE has not been very dependable, as it has been towed four times in the past year. We take it to Chrysler for yearly maintenance, as well as to our regular mechanic, but it still seems to have issues. We purchased it brand new, but we have learned our lesson. It is disappointing that Chrysler has not taken more responsibility for the transmission issues, especially since we take extra care with our minivan due to having young children. On some days, it runs smoothly, but on others, we find ourselves stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. In contrast, Toyota and Honda have a reputation for standing behind their products.

The engine ran smoothly and provided great gas mileage. The design was good, but unfortunately, the AC was a problem area. Additionally, the transmissions were not reliable, as I went through 3 transmissions in 150k miles, despite maintaining my vehicles well and driving them gently. Similarly, 4 of my friends and relatives who owned different years of Voyagers and Caravans also experienced inordinate amounts of transmission problems. Due to these issues, I decided not to purchase another Dodge mini van and instead switched to a different brand. Despite the AC and transmission problems, the Caravan would be an economical choice.

This van has been great for me and my family, and it keeps going strong year after year. It's perfect for hauling stuff (especially with the seats removed) and does a fantastic job of towing my ski boat. Although I did have a couple of issues with the head gasket - one at 101,000 miles and another at 130,000 - overall it has been a very dependable vehicle.
