Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

Common 1997 Plymouth Voyager problems

The 1997 Plymouth Voyager is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues include faulty electronic components, a faulty ignition switch, a faulty power steering system, rust, and wear and tear, as well as concerns with the gas tank placement and ground clearance. The vehicle's engines, particularly the 3.0 and 3.3 liter six-cylinder engines, may experience issues with hydraulic valve clearance compensators and belt type timing. The average fuel consumption for these engines is in the range of 12 to 16 liters per 100 kilometers. The 2.4 liter aspirated engine, while not requiring high maintenance costs, consumes more than 16 liters in the city. The average life of the gasoline power units is 350,000 to 400,000 kilometers, after which an expensive overhaul is required.

In wet weather, due to the ingress of moisture into the connectors of the ignition coils or spark plugs, there are problems with the ignition system. The exhaust system is also prone to corrosion. The automatic transmission increases fuel consumption and possible maintenance costs, but the cost of repairs is not too frightening. However, at high speeds, the oil in the Box overheats, losing its properties, and an additional automatic transmission oil cooler may be necessary for fast driving.

The manual transmission also causes some concern, as the clutch control cable wears out and breaks. The minivan suspension has a simple design, but the front uses McPherson struts, and every 60,000 kilometers, the bushings and ball joints of the front levers need to be changed. The rear all-wheel drive versions have a rigid beam on parabolic springs, and adjustable ride height rear shock absorbers are very expensive.

The interior of the Voyager is spacious and well-equipped, with most copies equipped with air conditioning, airbags, an on-board computer, cruise control, electric windows, and mirrors. In the five-seat configuration, travelers have at their disposal a 450-liter trunk. However, the sofa weighing 53 kilograms is quite bulky and significantly reduces the capacity of the trunk. Before buying, it is essential to assess the condition of the body accurately, as corrosion occurs in the area of the sills, cross members that stiffen the body, and at the bottom of the doors. The operation of sliding doors should also be checked, as repairs can be difficult and expensive if the guides or locks are faulty.

The 1997 Plymouth Voyager is available in a standard version without a rear left door, and in older copies, the seat folding mechanism and ventilation flaps break. A common defect is not working heated seats and expensive trim levels. The failure of the air conditioning system is associated with leaks at the junctions of the tubes or with the failure of the compressor. Some of the cheapest on the market are diesel voyagers, but they are the most controversial, especially for the European market. Chrysler ordered a diesel engine from the Italian company VM, which was considered one of the most powerful and most economical in its class, but after a while, it turned out that it creates a huge number of problems. Oil leaks occur, gaskets break through, and the timing chain wears out prematurely. Durable gears were used at first, but few craftsmen take up repairs willingly, and the cost of work is estimated very high. Therefore, the only true alternative are Petro versions which can be successfully converted to gas.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-17
  • VIN: 1P4GP44RXVB
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: ON JULY 17, 2006 MY BELT TENSIONER BROKE ON MY 97 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER SE. I HAD IT TOWED TO AN AUTO SHOP THE NEXT DAY WHERE THEY REPLACED THE TENSIONER AND PUT ON A NEW BELT. ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2006, (THE FIRST DAY DRIVING CAR IN THE RAIN SINCE REPLACING BELT & TENSIONER), WHILE DRIVING CAR IN THE RAIN 5 MINUTES, THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST AND THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON - THE BELT HAD COME OFF. RETURNED CAR TO REPAIR CENTER. THEY PUT BELT BACK ON AND COULD NOT FIND ANY REASON WHY THIS HAPPENED, OTHER THAN TO SAY THAT BELTS CAN FALL OFF MORE EASILY IN WET WEATHER. ON SEPT. 17, IT WAS NOT RAINING WHEN I WAS DRIVING CAR AT THE TIME, HOWEVER, THERE WAS AN AVERAGE SIZE PUDDLE THAT I DID DRIVE INTO AND AS SOON AS I DID I LOST MY POWER STEERING AND THE BATTER LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED OVER AND HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED. THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO A DEALER. THEY PUT THE BELT BACK ON AND COULD NOT FIND ANY REASON WHY IT WOULD HAVE COME OFF, OTHER THAN IT GETTING WET. I TOLD THEM THAT I HAD HEARD THROUGH A FRIEND THAT CHRYSLER VANS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM OF THE BELT COMING OFF IN WET WEATHER BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF IT. THE ONLY 2 TIMES I HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR IN WET WEATHER AFTER REPLACING THE BELT TENSIONER, THE BELT HAS COME OFF. AFTER LOOKING UP SOME INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET (WWW.CARSURVEY.ORG), I FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH PLYMOUTH AND DODGE CARAVANS. ALL IT TAKES IS GETTING IT WET AND THE BELT COMES OFF VERY EASILY. THERE ARE OVER 100 EMAILS ON THE WEBSITE WITH COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS ON THIS VERY ISSUE. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE CAR DESIGN. I WOULD APPRECIATE SOMEONE LOOKING INTO THIS AND CONSIDERING A RECALL. OUR FAMILY HAS 2 PLYMOUTH VOYAGERS AND HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THEM UNTIL NOW. WE WERE CONSIDERING REPLACING THEM IN THE NEAR FUTURE BUT WILL DEFINITELY NOT BUY ANOTHER CHRYSLER AFTER FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND REALIZING CHRYSLER HAS NOT TAKEN ANY STEPS TO SOLVE THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *NM

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that we've been proud owners of our Voyager since 1999. It had just under 50000 miles when we purchased it, and now it has 105000. We've been lucky to have only needed normal maintenance, with the exception of replacing a starter coil about 3 months ago. Thanks for listening!

We bought our Voyager brand new and have had to replace virtually everything in it. It's been a bit frustrating, but we still love our American-made vehicles. While we have had some transmission and engine issues with our American-made cars, our Toyota Camry has over 200,000 miles on it and has yet to have any problems. We believe that foreign automakers may have an edge in some areas, but we still have faith in American automakers.

The transmission issue with the 1997 Plymouth Voyager is a result of engineering. Despite maintaining oil and fluid levels vigilantly, I had to have my transmission rebuilt at around 100,000 miles, and now at 143,000 miles, the symptoms are returning. It is clear that the root cause of the problem lies in the design of the vehicle.

This van has had a few repairs done, including a transmission replacement at 25000, two valve cover gasket replacements, and a complete brake job at 45000. The 3 speed auto requires more frequent fluid changes, every 15000 instead of every 30000. There is one nagging problem with the rear window washer, which wouldn't stop squirting. The dealer suggested replacing the HVAC control panel for $700, but I decided to disconnect the washer instead. Overall, I feel lucky to have this van! Let me know if you have any questions.

This is a lemon..plain and simple. It has been in the shop (3 times by tow truck) no less than 3 times a year for different mechanical and electrical problems. Everything from a broken timing belt @ 29000 miles to a busted head gasket at 55000. Turn on the radio and the windshield wipers are sure to work. That relay has been replaced at least 3 times.

You have owned this vehicle since 1998. Despite towing a small travel trailer with it for some time, the original engine and transmission have lasted until now, with 190,000 miles on it. Last year, you had to replace the water pump, and the year before that, the valve cover gaskets. However, the van still starts every time, drives smoothly, and accommodates your 3 kids and their friends (yours is the 7-passenger version). Although you bought an Expedition for towing, you still drive the van a lot because it is such a great vehicle. This is, without a doubt, the smartest vehicle purchase you have ever made.

  2. Nikko Champlin 2025-01-03

We bought our van new in '96. We drive it alot. Putting 20 to 25k a year on it. The air conditioner started fadind a couple years ago so we add a couple cans of coolent each summer. The only major expense was the transmission at 105,000 miles. Now at 140,xxx miles we are having some tranny problems again. The engine hasn't run smoothly since 98,000 when I had a tune up done. The gas mileage still remaines between 20 and 23 mpg.

Your 1997 Plymouth Voyageur has been an incredibly reliable vehicle. You purchased it used in the year 2000 and have owned it for 20 years. You have always driven it with care and respect, and as a result, have never had any problems with the transmission, unlike many others. It is important to avoid spinning the wheels, especially in turns or turning. The only issues you have had so far are the following: The Rad Fan Relay stopped working, so you had it replaced. The water pump started leaking about 5 years ago, so you had that replaced. The muffler finally developed a hole, so you had it changed. The headlight plastics faded, so you got those polished up. You have only gone through 1 set of brake rotors. It has been a great vehicle and you still have it. You have made sure to oil spray it every year.

  4. Carey Graham 2024-10-27

I'm so glad to hear that your 97 voyager has been one of the most reliable vehicles you've ever owned! It sounds like you've taken great care of it by doing all the suggested maintenance at the recommended intervals, including oil/lube every 3000 miles. It's impressive that the only other work ever done to the van was a new water pump when the timing belt was changed @100K+ miles, and that was just preventive. You made a wise decision in taking care of your vehicle so well!

  5. Christian Tromp 2024-08-26

This van has been excellent! It's been with us for 10 years and has required minimal repairs and standard maintenance. I change the oil myself and keep an eye on fluid levels. Unfortunately, we did experience a leaking gasket around the oil pan at around 100,000 miles, but other than that, it's been a very dependable vehicle. However, I must say that the dealership in Durham has been terrible.
