Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

Common Plymouth Voyager 1994 problems

The 1994 Plymouth Voyager has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

Power Window Motor and Switches May Fail

One of the most common issues reported is related to the power window motor and switches. This problem can result in the windows not working or only working intermittently. The cause of this problem is often due to the window motor or switch failing, which can be caused by wear and tear or corrosion. Replacing the faulty part usually resolves the issue.

Speedometer Not Working Due to Failed Vehicle Speed Sensor

Another common problem reported by owners of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager is a malfunctioning speedometer. This issue is often caused by a failed vehicle speed sensor, which is responsible for providing speed information to the speedometer. Replacing the faulty sensor usually resolves the issue.

Sliding Door May Fall Off

The sliding door of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported that the door may fall off or become difficult to open and close. This problem is often caused by wear and tear on the door's hinges or tracks. Regular maintenance and lubrication can help prevent this issue, but in some cases, the door may need to be repaired or replaced.

Engine Stalling

Some owners of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager have reported issues with engine stalling, particularly when coming to a stop. This problem can be caused by various factors, including a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS) or air intake sensor (AIS), a clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning transmission control module (TCM). Cleaning or replacing the faulty part usually resolves the issue.

Transmission Gear Dropping

Another common problem reported by owners of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager is abnormal transmission gear dropping. This issue can result in the transmission slipping or shifting to a lower gear unexpectedly, causing the engine to over-rev. This problem is often caused by wear and tear on the transmission or a faulty transmission control module (TCM). Replacing the faulty part or rebuilding the transmission usually resolves the issue.

Valve Guide or Seat Deterioration

The 1994 Plymouth Voyager's 3.0l V6 engine has been reported to have issues with valve guide or seat deterioration. This problem can result in the engine burning more oil than usual, causing it to smoke. This issue is often caused by wear and tear on the engine's valve guides or seats, which can be expensive to repair.

Leaky Transmission

The transmission of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager has also been reported to have issues with leaking. This problem is often caused by wear and tear on the transmission's seals or gaskets. Regular maintenance and replacing the faulty parts usually resolves the issue.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1994 Plymouth Voyager. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help prevent more significant problems and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

  • Summary: I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS PEELING PAINT PROBLEM FOR TWO YEARS. I DISCUSSED THIS WITH THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES - THEY OFFERED TO GIVE ME A FREE ESTIMATE FOR A NEW PAINT JOB! I HAVE A CHRYSLER CASE #9230347. THE ZONE REP HAS LOOKED AT THE VAN AND OFFERED TO ASSIST WITH REPAINTING. I WAS TOLD TO GET AN ESTIMATE FROM MAACO WHICH WAS $1400 TO REPAINT THE ROOF AND HOOD. HE OFFERED TO PAY $400. I DECIDED TO TAKE THEM TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT AND HAD ANOTHER ESTIMATE TO REPAINT THE ENTIRE VAN FOR $3040.79. WE WENT FOR OUR PRETRIAL CONFERENCE ON JUNE 10, 2003. I WAS TOLD I NEED TO PROVE THAT THIS DEALERSHIP KNEW IN 1994 THAT THE PAINT WOULD FAIL... I CAN'T FIND A SERVICE BULLETIN. BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU ONLY KEEPS RECORDS FOR 3 YRS. WE WENT TO MEDIATION - ME, THE LAWYER FROM THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE ZONE REP FOR CHRYSLER (BILL SEDICK). THE LAWYER WAS A STEREOTYPICAL SLEAZE... HE SAID THE STATUE OF LIMITATIONS WAS 6 YRS AND THIS CASE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO COURT. HE TRIED TO GET THE JUDGE TO THROW IT OUT BEFORE WE EVEN WENT TO MEDIATION. THEN HE THREATENED TO MAKE ME PAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN LEGAL FEES... I DISMISSED THE CASE AGAINST THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I LEARNED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE GONE THAT ROUTE ANYWAY. BUT I HOPE THAT SLEAZY LAWYER DOESN'T THINK IT WAS BECAUSE OF HIM... I TOLD HIM HE WASN'T TELLING THE TRUTH - THAT THERE WAS NO STATUE OF LIMITATIONS UNDER THE MAGNUSON MOSS FED. LAW... HE WAS SUCH A CREEP - HE EVEN MADE THE COURT CLERK MAD BECAUSE HE SAID THEIR DISMISSAL FORM WAS BOGUS. THEN THE CHRYSLER GUY OFFERED $1,500.00 FOR A PAINT JOB. HE EVEN APOLOGIZED FOR THE LAWYER GUY. I'M SUPPOSED TO GO TO A PAINT SHOP FOR AN ESTIMATE AND MR. SEDICK SAID HE'D WORK WITH THEM AND ME TO GET THE VAN REPAINTED. HE WAS PRETTY NICE ACTUALLY. HE SAID HE DIDN'T WANT A DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER AND HE HOPED I WOULD DO BUSINESS WITH THEM AGAIN - I SAID PROBABLY NOT...ANYWAY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-15

  • VIN: 2P4GH45R6RR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: PLEASE BE INFORMED OF A POTENTIAL AUTO FIRE DEFECT ON A 1994 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER VAN WITH A 3.3 ENGINE.. CAUSE: \TUSE OF A METAL CABLE RESTRAINT CLEAT THAT HOLDS THE HIGH AMPERAGE BATTERY CABLE HARNES, NEXT TO THE ALTERNATOR. CLEAT IS LOCATED BEFORE THE MAIN BATTERY FUSE LINK, CONDITION AGRIVATED WITH THERMAL WARMING, LOCATED ABOVE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. CLEAT CUTS INTO THE HIGH AMPERAGE CABLE AND IGNITES A FIRE IN THE CABLE HARNES. BURNING HARNES IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BELOW A FLEXABLE FUEL LINE. IT MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE TO EXTINGUISH THE RESULTING FIRE WITHOUT REMOVAL OF THE BATTERY CLAMP, AS THE FUSE LINK AFFORDS NO PROTECTION AND THE FIRE WILL RE-IGNITE. FAULT DISCOVERY: OWNER OBSERVED FIRE SOON AFTER IGNITION AND USED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO PUT OUT THE FLAMES, BUT THE CABLE CONTINUED TO INCANDESS UNTIL THE BATTERY CLAMP WAS REMOVED. FOLLOWUP EXAMINATION OF THE RECOVERED METAL CLEAT SHOWED INDICATIONS OF ARC-BURNING. FAILURE MODE: THE FAILURE MODE MAY EXPLAIN THE CAUSE OF OTHER INCIDENTS WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS EITHER PARKED UNATTENDED OR BEING DRIVEN AT HIGHER SPEED, AND EVIDENCE OF CAUSE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED DUE TO MORE EXTENSIVE FIRE LOSS.

Negative Plymouth Voyager 1994 car reviews

  1. Grant Adams 2024-09-21

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Voyager. We've actually owned two of them, including a 1985 model that we bought new. Our current one has over 316,000 km on it and it's still going strong! We've had to replace a few things over the years, like the water pumps and timing belts, but overall it's been a reliable vehicle. We did have an issue with the transmission at 70,000 km, but it turned out to be a problem with the installation of an auxiliary cooler. We learned our lesson and now change the fluid ourselves every 50,000 km. We also make sure to do regular maintenance like oil and filter changes every 5,000 km and anti-freeze flushes/changes every 50,000 km. I hope this helps!

  2. Carlos Wisozk 2024-08-25

This van may not be the most reliable option. The engine tends to start making sounds around 25,000 miles and the transmission may go out at 100,000 miles.

  3. Stefan Cremin 2024-08-12

This car is great for practical purposes like taking things to the dump, moving goods from one apartment to another, and even bringing home the Christmas tree (inside). It's also spacious enough to comfortably fit more than 4 people, making it perfect for family outings. While it may not be the most sporty option out there, it certainly gets the job done. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing some transmission issues and will need to have it replaced or rebuilt.

  4. Zackery Schimmel 2024-06-29

I bought this car used with 60k miles. It drives well and has plenty of power, although it's not a sports car. I haven't had any problems with it other than the remote mirror controls.

  5. Cleo Leffler 2024-05-02

This van was not in good condition.

We bought a brand new minivan and in over 10 years and 100k miles, we have had no major problems with it. It has been a solid performer and we would definitely consider Dodge/Chrysler models again for a minivan.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. It was really amazing when we first got it! It was our family car, then my brother's, and then mine. It definitely had its fair share of wear and tear, especially with two teenage drivers, but it was a trooper! It could haul heavy loads with ease, was pretty good on gas, and had plenty of room. Even with a bad transmission, poor alignment, damaged suspension, broken water pump, and a massive coolant leak (which we ran on straight water for the last year and a half), it still managed to run for 3-4 years! And the best part? It only needed routine maintenance and was easy to repair. Unfortunately, it died a few months ago and became unsafe, but we'll always remember it fondly.

I bought this 'stick' back in '96 with 30k miles on it. The average maintenance cost has been around $200. I use it primarily for long distance comfort climax vacations of 1k miles or more. On average, I drive about 7k miles yearly, mostly on highways. Although it's beginning to rust, it's still safe with the original transmission and motor, and it doesn't burn oil. It has the best outward visibility and is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned, which is why I keep it. I've tried many other vehicles for distance driving, but none of them can match the '93. I'll miss it someday.

This is the best car I've ever owned! It has gone almost 200,000 miles with only a few minor problems. The transmission went out at 150K, and the fuel pump and alternator needed replacing at around 178K and 190K respectively. But that's really about it! Although the engine now has some blow-by issues (Mitsubishi 3.0L) through the valve train, I'm having trouble finding a used car that drives as well as this one does. I may just fix it and keep on trucking! Even with this issue, I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a long trip, as long as I had some oil in the back. There's no reason to buy imports when domestics are just this good!

Hey there! I noticed that my van has a bit of a reverse delay. When I try to shift into reverse and give it gas at the same time, it sometimes hits the reverse gear badly and goes back into neutral. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?
