Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-31
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I OWN A 1998 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER. AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST INCIDENT THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 80,000 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING I NOTICED THAT A NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS SUDDENLY APPEARED AND THAT ALL OF THE GAUGES WERE NOT OPERATING ON THE DASH. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO SCAP JEEP/PLYMOUTH/DODGE DEALERSHIP IN FAIRFIELD CT. THE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT HE HAD NO CLUE WHAT IT WAS AND THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO TRACE EACH WIRE AND IT WOULD INCLUDE NUMEROUS MAN HOURS. HE ALSO SUGGESTED REPLACING THE MAIN COMPUTER. IF I WANTED TO HAVE THEM FIX IT I WOULD HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT. I FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE OPERATED JUST FINE, JUST COULD NOT TELL MPH, MILEAGE, AUTO DOOR LOCKS FAILED AND AIRBAG, ANTI LOCK BRAKES, IN ADDITION TO ALL OTHER GAUGES. THREE DAYS LATER ALL RETURNED TO NORMAL FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN A REPEAT. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED WITH NO PATTERN FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS. DEALERSHIP CLAIMED IT WAS COMPUTERS. IN SPEAKING WITH MY LOCAL MECHANIC, HE HAD ANOTHER CUSTOMER WITH SAME TYPE VEHICLE AND SAME PROBLEM. THIS CUSTOMER SPENT IN EXCESS OF $2000 AT THE DEALERSHIP AND PROBLEM STILL PERSISTED. THE LOCAL MECHANIC OPENED THE DASH AND IMMEDIATELY FOUND A WIRE THAT WAS PARTIALLY BROKEN FREE FROM A HARNESS. HE PUSHED THE WIRE COMPLETELY INTO RECEIVER AND PROBLEM SOLVED. DUE TO WIRE BEING FRAYED, HE WENT TO LOCAL JUNK YARD TO GET A USED HARNESS END AND REPLACED SAID PIECE. SAME PROBLEM WAS FOUND WITH OUR VEHICLE. WIRE WAS FIXED AND THE ENTIRE JOB WAS LESS THAN 1 HOUR OF LABOR. HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE. PLYMOUTH HAS ISSUED NO RECALLS OR EVEN ANY ALERTS OF THE PROBLEM TO ITS DEALERSHIPS. IN PHONE CALLS TO CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY CLAIM THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT TWO VEHICLES IN THE SAME TOWN ARE THE ONLY ONES TO EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM AND HOPE THAT YOU LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AND ORDER ANY RECALLS NECESSARY. *TR

  • Summary: WE HAVE PAID NUMEROUS TIMES TO HAVE THESE SAME ISSUES LOOKED AT PARTS REPLACED. NEW BRAIN AS THEY SAID FOR THE CAR, NEW COMPUTER MODULES. THIS OVER THE YEARS HAS COST ME UNTOLD AMOUNTS OF TIME AND MONEY. THE DASH SHUTS OFF COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE HAD EVERYTHING REPLACED. WIPERS DO WHAT THEY CHOOSE, IF WE LEAVE THEM ON THEY STAY OFF.IF WE TURN THEM OFF THEY GO ON. WE HAVE NO DASH WHAT SO EVER, UNABLE TO ASCERTAIN SPEED IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. NUMEROUS TIMES THE VEHICLE HAS JUST SHUT DOWN WHEN COMING TO A STOP. RADIO AND CD PLAYER WORKS AND DOESN'T AT VARIABLE TIMES. WE HAVE HAD ALL OF THIS LOOKED AT NUMEROUS TIMES AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO THEY JUST MAKE EDUCATED GUESSES AND HOPE IT FIXES IT. WE HAVE SPENT FAR TOO MUCH MONEY ON THIS ISSUE. THE DOOR LOCKS WORK SPORADIC. ON OCCASIONS WE WILL LOSE JUST PART OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND HAVE HALF STILL. FOR EXAMPLE WE HAVE LOST SPEED ODOMETER AND GAS AND KEPT HE REST. THIS CAR IS A LEMON AND A PENDING DEATH TRAP. THERE IS NEVER ANY KIND OF WARNING TO OWNERS, I AM TOLD TO REPLACE THE MAIN COMPUTER OVER AND OVER. BEING AS ITS THE MAIN COMPUTER FOR THE VEHICLE IT ALSO OVER SEES MANY OTHER OPERATIONS OF THE VEHICLE AND CAN CAUSE NUMEROUS OTHER THINGS TO HAPPEN WHICH WE MAY NEVER KNOW OF UNTIL SAID CONDITIONS REQUIRE THAT ACTION AND IT IS NOT PRESENT. *TR

Negative 1998 Plymouth Voyager car reviews

  1. Triston Pouros 2024-11-09

This was our first mini van and the experience was great overall. Although we did encounter a few issues such as the check engine light, sway bars, water pump, brake squeals, and some other problems, we still found it to be pretty reliable up to 90K miles. It's worth noting that the keyless entry costs $100+ to replace and the power can be a little weak on very steep grades. However, we have decided to replace the Espresso with a Mazda MPV due to its better reliability and features.

I purchased this vehicle with the knowledge that it required some repairs. Despite having only 95,000 miles on it, I paid $1,500 for the body style. Unfortunately, I encountered several issues such as a broken driver's window regulator, two faulty fuel injectors, an engine covered in oil and dirt, a badly leaking steering rack, and wheels out of alignment. Additionally, it was time for a timing belt replacement. I later discovered that the thermostat was physically broken and the radiator had split open. However, I was able to fix all of these issues myself with the help of a Haynes repair manual and caught up on maintenance. During the repairs, I noticed signs of a previous bad mechanic who had worked on the van. Despite all of these challenges, I have managed to put 10,000 miles on this vehicle that someone had tried to kill! It is unfortunate that car manufacturers change designs not to improve them, but to make parts not interchangeable. The only benefit to consumers is that theft of car parts is not practical.

We purchased the Voyager almost a year ago. Unfortunately, the transmission failed on our way to the hospital to have our youngest baby, with only 70k miles on it. Although it cost us $2600 to repair, it makes for a good story. A few months later, we had to replace various parts of the AC, which cost us $1200 at 75k miles. We also spent $700 on brakes at 62k and 82k miles since purchasing. It would have been more enjoyable to drive it off a cliff or set it on fire for the money spent! We have decided to purchase a Honda as soon as possible. Despite the incentives, it is likely that you will pay either way. We have learned our lesson and will not be buying a Chrysler product again.

  4. Mckenna Mante 2024-09-17

The lemon they sold me had transmission failure at 48000 miles and A/C compressor failure at 50000. It was a complete waste of money. Their negligence left my wife stranded on the road. This is unacceptable and I demand a resolution.

  5. Elvis Koch 2024-04-12

Well, we bought one of these '98 cars with 100k miles on it. Unfortunately, at 140k miles, the transmission went out and we started experiencing electrical problems, such as the fuel gauge and lights flashing all the time. We still have some electric issues, but we've managed to keep it running with a third transmission. It has 15k miles on it so far and is holding up, although there is a bit of a clunk when applying the brakes.

Hey there! I just wanted to share that I bought this 1998 van with 80000 miles on it for work transportation, and now it has 101000 miles. The best part is that I haven't experienced any problems so far!

  2. Madisen Dietrich 2024-11-21

I'm so glad I own and drive this car! It's been perfect for several long trips, and it's so easy to get in and out of. The visibility is great too. The highway mileage has been above 20 mpg, and around town about 16 mpg, which is totally acceptable considering how useful this body style is. I've owned over a dozen other vehicles, but this one is the most useful overall, and still fairly comfortable on the road. I will admit that some small things have quit, but so far the only big issue is the A/C. It's too bad we didn't keep up the warranty.

  3. Murl Klocko 2024-10-22

I purchased my first '98 Voyager from a caring original owner, and everything looked and worked like it was brand new. Unfortunately, at 260,000 miles, another driver ran a red light and totaled my beloved van. However, the van protected me well, and I had no life-threatening injuries. Because of how amazing that van was, I replaced it with another '98 in excellent condition, and it has proven to be just as reliable. I drive a lot, and with 180,000 miles on this van, I have not needed to rebuild the drivetrain. I want to mention that I have several health conditions that cause pain, and these vans are much more comfortable for me than any newer model vehicle that I've tried. I have no intention of trading in this wonderful little van - it's now part of the family! UPDATE: We have surpassed 200,000 miles, and it still runs like a top! I am so very pleased!

  4. Bud Gutmann 2024-10-03

I've owned my Voyager for 10 years and it has been my best car experience yet, and I've had quite a few. It gets the kind of mileage you'd expect from a minivan and is both reliable and comfortable. I've had no major issues even at 140,000K and the engine seems bulletproof to me. Just normal oil, transmission, and tuneup work. It's definitely a keeper and I must have gotten ahold of a good one.

  5. Gilberto Quitzon 2024-10-03

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Voyager. I bought it to replace my beloved Toyota Corolla because my teenage son's feet wouldn't fit in the back anymore. I found my Voyager with 132,000 miles on it, test drove it, and despite my brother's objections, I bought it. And I'm so glad I did! I haven't had any major problems with it, although the A/C doesn't hold a charge and the turn signals only work sometimes. My brother says I've been lucky with the transmission, but it seems solid to me. One thing I really love about it is that it can use flex fuel. Thanks for listening!
