Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

Common 1995 Plymouth Voyager problems

The 1995 Plymouth Voyager, like many vehicles of its era, is prone to certain issues that owners have reported over the years. These problems range from minor inconveniences to more serious concerns that can impact the vehicle's overall performance and safety. Here are some of the most common problems with the 1995 Plymouth Voyager:

  • Air Filter Problems: A clogged or dirty air filter can cause a range of issues, including reduced engine performance and increased fuel consumption. In some cases, a clogged air filter can also cause a whining noise and prevent the vehicle from moving. It's essential to check the air filter regularly and replace it as needed to ensure optimal engine performance.
  • Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including difficulty shifting and a lack of power when accelerating. In some cases, the transmission may not engage at all, which can be a sign of a more serious problem. It's essential to have the transmission checked by a professional if you experience any issues.
  • Catalytic Converter Problems: The catalytic converter is a critical component of the vehicle's exhaust system, and it can become clogged or damaged over time. In some cases, a clogged catalytic converter can cause a whining noise and prevent the vehicle from moving. If you suspect that your catalytic converter is clogged, it's essential to have it checked by a professional as soon as possible.
  • General Maintenance: Like any vehicle, the 1995 Plymouth Voyager requires regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This includes regular oil changes, fluid checks, and tire rotations. Neglecting these maintenance tasks can lead to a range of issues, including reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and potentially serious engine damage.

In summary, the 1995 Plymouth Voyager is prone to certain issues that owners have reported over the years. These problems include coolant leaks, air filter issues, transmission problems, catalytic converter issues, and general maintenance needs. By staying on top of these issues and having the vehicle serviced regularly, you can help ensure optimal performance and longevity.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-02-07
  • VIN: 2P4GH45R6SR
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY 1995 VOYAGER WAS SUPPOSEDLY SERVICED FOR NHTSA RECALL 99V113000 AND MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 818/AIRBAG SYSTEM WIRING ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1999. AT THAT TIME THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. WHAT WAS DONE AT THAT TIME I DO NOT KNOW. IN FEBRUARY, 2007, I WAS DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM WITH THE REAR WIPER TURNED ON. I PARKED THE VEHICLE FOR A SHORT TIME. WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, I NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT REMAINED ON. I SUBSEQUENTLY NOTICED THE REAR WIPER NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STRANGE COINCIDENCE. LATER I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT GOING ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON YOUR CARS. THAT WAS WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT RECALL 99V113000. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO REPAIR THE MALFUNCTION ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. I CALLED CHRYSLER WHO ALSO INFORMED ME I MUST PAY TO HAVE THE SYSTEM DIAGNOSED AND PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS IF THEY DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DUE TO THE RECALL CONDITIONS. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED WAS RELATED TO THE RECALL AND CHRYSLER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE REPAIR AT NO COST TO ME.

  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1995 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER THAT WAS FOUND BY MY AUTO MECHANIC TO BE LEAKING FUEL ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE DEFECTIVE PART WAS ON RECALL FOR 1996 VOYAGERS BUT NOT FOR MY 1995 VOYAGER EVENTHOUGH ITS THE SAME PART, THE FUEL RAIL. I TALKED TO CHRIS IN THE RECALL CENTER AT 800-531-1403 AND NOTIFIED HIM OF THE PART BUT HE WOULD DO NOTHING TO EXPAND THE RECALL TO MY CAR. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF 1995 VOYAGERS LIKE MINE THAT HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF CATCHING FIRE BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART BUT DAIMLER-CHRYSLER WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS A CASE OF GROSS NEGLIGENCE ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT THEY SHOULD REFUND MY REPAIR EXPENSES. *NM

THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 1996 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER (REF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 02V293000) FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM, BUT I AM TOLD THAT I MUST PAY A CHRYSLER DEALER APPROXIMATELY $100 DIAGNOSIS FEE IN ORDER FOR CHRYSLER TO CONSIDER OFFERING ASSISTANCE. I DO NOT MIND PAYING $100 DIAGNOSIS FEE IF I AM GUARANTEED TO GET THE MONEY BACK WHEN THEY TELL ME THAT THE CLOCKSPRING IS DEFINITELY THE PROBLEM. ALL I WANT IS TO GET THE PART FOR FREE AND I'LL INSTALL IT MYSELF. (2) NO CONSEQUENCES YET. (3) THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED - AWAITING CHRYSLER HELP. *JB

RETURNED VEHICLE YEARS LATER (LIGHT ON ENTIRE TIME) AND REQUESTED TO SERVICE THE PROBLEM IF RELATED TO RECALL NHTSA RECALL 99V113000 AND MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 818/AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT . DEALER HAS CHARGED ME $82 DOLLARS TO TELL ME THAT WIPER MOTOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT AND ADDITIONALLY A COST OF $247.90 WOULD BE REQUIRED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE AIR BAGS WILL NOT WORK UNTIL WIPER MOTOR IS REPLACED. MY REQUEST TO INVESTIGATE THIS CLAIM UNDER THE RECALL ACTION WAS IGNORED BY STAFF/TECHNICIANS. Negative 1995 Plymouth Voyager car reviews

  1. Doug Wehner 2025-01-06

It's great to hear that your van has been a reliable cruiser, even getting almost 26 mpg while going through Alabama! Although there were some problems with the a.c. in the past, it's great that a body shop was finally able to fix it. Even though it may not be ice cold, it still does the job. It sounds like you're experiencing some issues with the brakes, suspension, and shocks, but hopefully those can be resolved. With its steady engine and 170 hp, it's no wonder you want to keep it around for a little while longer. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Burley Howell 2024-11-27

I bought this car used with 60k miles. It drives well and has plenty of power, although it's not a sports car. I haven't had any problems with it other than the remote mirror controls.

  3. Zechariah Lynch 2024-11-01

This thing was great for its space. We used to haul lots of people and lots of big bulky stuff that newer, narrower minivans can't accommodate. Although we've had some mechanical issues with it lately, we've taken good care of it and it has served us well. However, it's time to replace it now that the transmission is failing and it's consuming oil. It's a bit sad to say goodbye to a trusty companion like this.

  4. Dameon Hettinger 2024-10-12

This van may not be the most reliable option. The engine tends to start making sounds around 25,000 miles and the transmission may go out at 100,000 miles.

  5. Colton Roberts 2024-07-29

This car is great for practical purposes like taking things to the dump, moving goods from one apartment to another, and even bringing home the Christmas tree (inside). It's also spacious enough to comfortably fit more than 4 people, making it perfect for family outings. While it may not be the most sporty option out there, it certainly gets the job done. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing some transmission issues and will need to have it replaced or rebuilt.

Positive 1995 Plymouth Voyager car reviews

  1. Lucio Mohr 2024-08-06

I bought this 'stick' back in '96 with 30k miles on it. The average maintenance cost has been around $200. I use it primarily for long distance comfort climax vacations of 1k miles or more. On average, I drive about 7k miles yearly, mostly on highways. Although it's beginning to rust, it's still safe with the original transmission and motor, and it doesn't burn oil. It has the best outward visibility and is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned, which is why I keep it. I've tried many other vehicles for distance driving, but none of them can match the '93. I'll miss it someday.

  2. Toby Hill 2024-06-06

We purchased our minivan used in 1997 with 60,000 miles on it. We recently had the timing belt replaced at 170,000 miles, and we also put in a new transmission at 100,000 miles. Overall, we feel like we've gotten our money's worth and are happy with our purchase!

Hey there! I noticed that my van has a bit of a reverse delay. When I try to shift into reverse and give it gas at the same time, it sometimes hits the reverse gear badly and goes back into neutral. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with our van. We bought it back in '97 with 60,000 miles and it has been the best vehicle purchase we've ever made! In my opinion, the short vans drive, handle, and accelerate better than the 'grand' vans. The 3.0 litre engine coupled with the 3-speed is very good and provides great performance. We did have to rebuild the transmission at 108,000K, but we shopped around and found a shop to do it for $900. The vehicle now has 175,000K and still runs strong, even though it burns oil. I'm not even considering getting a new mini-van, I think I'll stick with this one and maybe just get a rebuilt engine and tranny. Go Plymouth! :)

Hi there! I'm the original owner of this vehicle and I must say, it has been a fantastic performer over the years. The only issue I've had is with the A/C system (dual controls), which required major repairs/replacements three times. Other than that, I've had no significant problems. I've used it to haul my grandchildren in comfort (thanks to the built-in car seats) and my heavy musical equipment as a constantly gigging musician. I've even loaded it to the max with bulky household items for two long roundtrips when I moved to FL, and it handled beautifully under that strain. I loved it so much that I bought another one! Of course, since Plymouth is no longer around, I invested in its snooty sister, a new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. Thanks for reading!
