Common Mitsubishi Galant problems
The Mitsubishi Galant is a popular car model, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that Mitsubishi Galant owners have reported:
- Power Windows May Stop Working: A common issue with the Mitsubishi Galant is that the power windows may stop working. This problem is often caused by a faulty window regulator or a blown fuse. In some cases, the window may not go up or down, while in others, the window may only move up or down intermittently.
- The Engine May Stall or Not Start Due to a Faulty Crankshaft Sensor: Another common problem with the Mitsubishi Galant is that the engine may stall or not start due to a faulty crankshaft sensor. This sensor is responsible for detecting the position of the crankshaft and sending this information to the engine control module. If the sensor fails, the engine may not start or may stall while driving.
- Rattle Noise From Exhaust: Some Mitsubishi Galant owners have reported a rattling noise coming from the exhaust. This problem is often caused by a loose heat shield or a damaged exhaust manifold. In some cases, the noise may be caused by a hole in the exhaust pipe.
- Expensive Repairs: According to Warranty Direct, the average cost of repair for the Mitsubishi Galant is more than £450, compared to around £250 for the Vectra and the Passat. This means that repairs for the Galant can be quite pricey, especially if the car is out of warranty.
- Expensive Problems with the Automatic Gearbox: The automatic gearbox in the Mitsubishi Galant can be the source of expensive problems. If the gearbox fails, it can be quite expensive to repair or replace. This is why it's important to check the service history of the car and make sure that the gearbox has been well-maintained.
- Problems with the Brakes: Brakes can cause problems in the Mitsubishi Galant. When buying a used Galant, it's important to check the brakes and make sure that they work properly. The car should brake in a straight line, and the brakes should not feel spongy or soft.
- Pricey Suspension Overhaul: The suspension in the Mitsubishi Galant is notoriously pricey to overhaul. When buying a used Galant, it's important to check the suspension and make sure that it's in good order. Check for uneven tyre wear, which can be a sign of suspension problems.
- Faulty Starter Generator: The starter generator in the Mitsubishi Galant can also be a source of problems. This component is responsible for starting the engine and generating electricity while the engine is running. If the starter generator fails, the engine may not start or may stall while driving.
- Oxygen Sensors and a Clogged Catalyst: After 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers, the starter generator, oxygen sensors, and a clogged catalyst may require attention. This is especially true for the V6 engine, which is known to have issues with the starter generator.
- Loosening Screws Securing the Dampers: In some cases, the screws securing the dampers in the intake manifold may loosen, causing the dampers to come loose and enter the cylinders. This can cause engine damage and may require expensive repairs.
In summary, the Mitsubishi Galant is a reliable car, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Some of the most common issues include faulty power windows, a faulty crankshaft sensor, rattling noises from the exhaust, expensive repairs, problems with the automatic gearbox, brakes, suspension, starter generator, oxygen sensors, and a clogged catalyst, and loosening screws securing the dampers. When buying a used Galant, it's important to check these components and make sure that they are in good working order.

Vehicle year: 2005
Having previously owned a Galant for the past 15 years and having had great performance and low maintenance from it, we decided to purchase the new 2005 model. We find it fun to drive, comfortable, and very attractive both inside and outside (with a very sporty looking design). We highly recommend this car and feel it is the best buy today, especially considering Mitsubishi's excellent warranty program.

I had to replace the water pump at 80,000 miles. Additionally, the transaxle torque converter went out at 143,000 miles. However, other than that, those were the only defective items I had to fix. Considering what other buyers have said about their transmissions, I got a good one.

We purchased our Galant almost new from a dealer in TX. It was truly the best car I have ever owned! The car had a sporty feel, handled great, and was incredibly comfortable. It was also very reliable and took us on multiple cross-country trips without any issues. I even had a friend who owned an $85,000 sports car ride in it and she kept asking, 'How much did you pay for this?' It's a fantastic car, very luxurious. Unfortunately, we traded it in for a minivan, and now we regret it.

Your 90 Galant sounds like it was an amazing car! It was so reliable and lasted for 125,000 miles with only minor repairs. Although the A/C did give out after 10 years, it still lasted longer than other newer cars in the family. It's a shame that the new Mitsubishi Galant doesn't seem to be up to the same standard.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it new and it now has 140k miles on it. Living in the DC area, I needed a car with a little 'zing' to get off and on the beltway, and this car has definitely delivered. I've only had to replace the O2 sensor, and everything still works great, which is amazing considering I have three teens sharing the car with me. The stereo is also really good. The only wear and tear I've noticed is on the outside edge of the driver's seat. Overall, it's been a reliable and responsive car that I've really enjoyed driving.

In my opinion, the Galant is a decent car, but it falls short in terms of interior design. The back seat is too cramped, which can be uncomfortable for anyone over 3 feet tall. Additionally, the dome lights in the front of the car are not very effective. The bumpers are also prone to denting, even with minor impacts. It would be great if Mitsubishi could take consumer feedback into account and make some improvements.

I recently purchased this car from a friend who kept it in their garage and performed routine maintenance. It had 100k miles when I bought it and rode great for the first year. However, I did experience some electrical problems such as the power windows' motor breaking, which unfortunately happened in December. The power locks also had a mind of their own and I got locked out several times. More recently, at 133k miles, I had some big problems with the water pump and heater core. Unfortunately, the heater core part was only available in Japan and cost $700. I just wanted to share my experience with certain foreign cars and warn you that they could potentially cost you big bucks to fix.

Vehicle year: 2001
I purchased this car brand new from the lot and for a long time, I didn't have any issues except for regular maintenance. Unfortunately, at around 110K miles, my transmission failed without any prior indications of a problem. Additionally, I had to replace a cracked radiator at around 90K miles. I have never had to replace the windshield or headlights, which is great. However, there are a few things that I have always complained about. Firstly, the LCD display on the CD player is nearly impossible to read. Secondly, the CD player's warning system for overheating is a design flaw that needs to be addressed. Thirdly, the top coat on the door handles and side mirrors has worn off. Lastly, the upholstery all the way up to the window is not ideal as it can be uncomfortable to rest your arm there after 9 years. For my next car, I would prefer vinyl in that area.

Although the vehicle was purchased used and had been in an accident, I have taken the necessary steps to address the issues with the transmission and air conditioning. Additionally, I have proactively responded to the recall notices regarding the bearings. While there have been some expenses associated with these repairs, I am confident in the investment I have made in this car.

I bought my Mitsubishi in January 2002 with only 8 miles on it. It was a black one and I loved it at first. However, after about 3 years, I noticed that the paint started disappearing in great big chunks. I had it looked at and was told that if I looked around at other black Mitsubishi vehicles, I would find that I am not the only one with this problem. Since then, I have looked very closely at any black Mitsubishi and have noticed that all of the older ones have the same issue with the paint disappearing. I was informed that the older models have this problem.
