Common 2000 Mitsubishi Galant problems

The Mitsubishi Galant 2000 is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. This article will discuss these issues in detail, based on the search results.

  • Ball Joint Failure: If you hear a knocking noise coming from the suspension while driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces, it could be a sign of ball joint failure. Fitting a replacement ball joint will resolve the issue.
  • Oil Leak: The usual cause of an oil leak on the Galant is the driveshaft seal. If you notice oil leaking onto the floor, it's likely coming from the back of the engine. Replacing the driveshaft seal should rectify the situation.
  • Engine Management Warning Light: If the engine management warning light appears on the dashboard, it's usually caused by an engine sensor, most commonly the crankshaft position sensor. Fitting a replacement crankshaft position sensor will resolve the problem.
  • Lack of Power/Misfiring: The throttle body can get clogged up on the Mitsubishi Galant 2000, leading to a lack of power at higher speeds and unresponsive acceleration. Misfiring can also be a symptom of this issue. Cleaning out the throttle body with some carb cleaner should resolve the issue.
  • Suspension Problems: The lower front arm of the suspension may develop backlash after 15,000 kilometers, but this does not necessarily require immediate replacement. The resource of the remaining suspension arms is about 100,000 kilometers, and the lower trailing arms of the rear suspension often survive up to 160,000 kilometers. However, wheel bearings and front brake discs can be weak points, with a resource of about 50,000 kilometers and 60,000 kilometers, respectively .
  • All-Wheel Drive Transmission: The all-wheel drive transmission distributes the moment along the axis in a ratio of 50:50. Its work does not cause any complaints, but the powerful all-wheel drive modification VR4 is equipped with the 4ws active rear wheel steering system, which has proven itself in everyday urban use .
  • Engine Problems: The 1.8-liter 140 horsepower engine equipped with GDI direct injection does not tolerate the fuel cocktail offered at gas stations and may not provide sufficient torque and power for active driving. The 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine with 136 horsepower is a better option for those who prioritize reliability and unpretentiousness, though it may not meet high-performance expectations .

In conclusion, the Mitsubishi Galant 2000 has several common problems that owners have reported, including gears slipping, ball joint failure, oil leaks, engine management warning lights, lack of power/misfiring, suspension problems, all-wheel drive transmission issues, and engine problems. While some of these issues can be resolved with simple repairs, others may require more significant maintenance or replacement of parts. It's essential to stay informed about these common problems to ensure the longevity and reliability of your vehicle.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: RECENTLY PURCHASED USED 200 MITSUBISHI GALANT. HAVING ISSUES WITH THE OIL LIGHT CONSTANTLY COMING ON AND THE CAR SHUTTING OFF. IT ALSO SEEMS AS THOUGH THE VEHICLE LOOSES POWER AND NONE OF THE SIGNAL LIGHTS OR HAZARD LIGHTS WILL WORK. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN OCTOBER 2008. THE DEALER WHERE PURCHASED IS NOT BEING VERY COOPERATIVE. ONCE OFF ITS TAKES SEVERAL TRIES FOR THE CAR TO START AGAIN. YOUR WEBSITE INDICATED THAT SEVERAL OF THESE MODELS WERE RECALLED. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-19
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAD PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2000 MITS. GALANT (BLACK) WHICH WAS A SPECIAL EDITION FROM THE LOCAL DEALER FOR MITSBUSHI AND WAS IN THE SHOWROOM. WITHIN 1 1/2 OF HAVING THIS VEHICLE, THE PAINT ON THE ROOF AROUND THE SUNROOF HAD FADED. GRADUALLY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS THE ROOF, FRONT HOOD AND REAR TRUCK IS COMPLETELY FADED AND THERE IS NO MORE COLOR ON THE CAR. IT IS COMPLETELY FADED DOWN TO THE ALUMINUM. I COMPLAINED TO THE CORPORATE OFFICE AS WELL AS MY LOCAL DEALER AND HAD PICS TAKEN OF MY CAR AND SENT IN TO THE CORPORATE OFFICE. THEY DENIED MY CLAIM TO OFFER A GOODWILL PAINT JOB. THEY HAD ALSO MENTIONED IT WAS A FACTORY DEFECT IN THE CLEAR COAT ON THE MODELS FROM 1999 TO 2004. IF THIS WAS A DEFECT WHY DIDN'T THE CORPORATE COMPANY SEND OUT RECALLS AND ISSUE FREE PAINT WORK TO THESE DAMAGED VEHICLES. THEY SAID MY VEHICLE WAS AT 108,000 MILES AND IT WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND TOO OLD TO QUALIFY FOR THIS PAINT JOB. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. MY CAR RUNS AWESOME OTHER THAN THE HORRIBLE PAINT JOB ON IT DUE TO MITSUBISHI'S BLACK CLEAR COAT PAINT IN WHICH THEY WERE USING ON A TRIAL BASIS CAUSE IT WAS A NEW COAT NEVER USED BEFORE AND DAMAGED HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES!! THIS IS A DISGRACE AND MITSUBISHI SHOULD SHUT DOWN ITS OFFICES. I URGE EVERYONE WHO READS THIS TO NEVER PURCHASE A MITS CAR EVER! *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-30
  • Fire: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2000 MITSUBISHI GALANT BRAND NEW IN JUNE, 2000. ABOUT 18 MONTHS LATER, MY CAR WOULD IMMEDIATELY STOP RUNNING. ALL SYSTEMS WOULD DIE. MY MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP ATTEMPTED DIFFERENT FIXES ON MANY OCCASIONS, ONLY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM OCCUR AGAIN. FINALLY, MY CAR WAS SENT TO A MASTER MECHANIC AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS SOMETHING TO DO WITH AN ELECTRICAL REGULATOR OR SWITCH. TO MY RECOLLECTION, THE SWITCH COULD ONLY CARRY A 10 AMP LOAD, AND WAS GETTING SHORTED OUT BECAUSE IT NEEDED MORE CAPACITY. THE PREVIOUS WORK AT THE OTHER DEALERSHIP DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH THE RESETTING OF THE SYSTEM MADE THE CAR ABLE TO FUNCTION AGAIN UNTIL ANOTHER OCCURRENCE. THE MASTER MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP INSTALLED A 50 AMP SWITCH AND MENTIONED THAT IT WAS WAY MORE THAN I WOULD EVER NEED IN THIS CAR. MY CAR HAS OPERATED FOR OVER 4 YEARS WITHOUT INCIDENT. YESTERDAY, A SMALL FIRE STARTED ON THE PIECE THAT I BELIEVE MAY HAVE BEEN PART OF THE FIX. WHILE I'M UNSURE HOW RELATED THESE INCIDENTS ARE, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT OTHER GALANTS ON THE ROAD. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-01
  • VIN: 4A3AA46G4YE
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2000 MITSUBISHI GALANT MANUFACTURED IN OCTOBER 1999. THE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH LEVER BROKE AND IS STUCK IN THE "SQUIRT WIPER FLUID" POSITION. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH LEVER BREAK LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AND PAID TO HAVE IT REPLACED. BOTH OF THESE ARE LISTED AS DEFECTS UNDER NHTSA RECALL 99V305001, BUT THERE ARE NO RECALLS LISTED. BOTH LEVERS HAVING BROKEN SEEMS TO INDICATE MY LEVERS WERE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN UNDER THE RECALL. I HAVE CONTACTED BOTH THE DEALERS SERVICE CENTER AND MITSUBISHI'S CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT THEY BOTH TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME. IF OTHER CARS IN THE SAME PRODUCTION RUN AS MINE ARE AFFECTED, THEY COULD BE UNKNOWINGLY SUBJECT TO THE SAFETY RISKS LISTED IN THE RECALL. *TR

  • VIN: 4A3AA46L4YE

  • Summary: THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE PAINT ON MY 2000 MITSUBISHI GALANT. AS FIRST I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING I WAS DOING WRONG, UNTIL I FOUND THE NUMEROUS CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M NOT SURE HOW MITSUBISHI HAS AVOIDED A RECALL BUT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND SHOULD BE COMPLETELY CORRECTED BY THE COMPANY. THE PAINT ON THE HOOD OF MY CAR STARTED TO BECOME ROUGH, THEN OVER THE PERIOD OF A FEW MONTHS BEGAN TO COME OFF. FIRST THE CLEAR COAT, THEN THE PAINT, SO NOW ITS DOWN TO THE METAL IN SOME AREAS. NEXT IT WILL RUST, AND I AM NOT TO BLAME. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAINT THE WHOLE CAR OUT OF POCKET IN ORDER TO PROTECT MY INVESTMENT. *TR

  • Consequence: THIS CIRCUIT FAILURE COULD CAUSE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TO OCCUR: (1) THE ENGINE WILL NOT START BECAUSE THE MAIN FUSE WILL BLOW IF THE POWER LEAD IS GROUNDED; (2) THE LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING LAMP WILL ILLUMINATE IF THE SIGNAL WIRE IS GROUNDED; (3) THE AIRCONDITIONING SYSTEM WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE IF THE LEAD TO THE MAGNETIC CLUTCH IS GROUNDED; AND (4) THE TURN SIGNAL/HAZARD LAMPS WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE IF THE VOLTAGE MONITOR LEAD IS GROUNDED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE AND DISCARD A METAL MANIFOLD BRACKET (FROM GALANT MODELS ONLY - ECLIPSE HAS NO SUCH BRACKET). DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE HARNESS. IF THE HARNESS WIRES SHOW NO DAMAGE, THE DEALER WILL INSTALL A HEAT INSULATOR ALONG WITH HEAT RESISTANT HARNESS CLIPS. IF THE HARNESS WIRES DO SHOW DAMAGE, THE DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW HARNESS WITH PREINSTALLED INTEGRAL HEAT PROTECTION.

Negative 2000 Mitsubishi Galant car reviews

  1. Dusty Bailey 2024-10-21

Overall, the car is good. However, I have noticed that the value tends to drop quite significantly after driving it off the showroom floor, which is not the case with Nissan or Toyota. Additionally, I have had to get two brake jobs done already, despite only having driven 36K miles. It seems like the dealers have a license to steal!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Mitsubishi Galant. I actually purchased it back in 2004 for $2400 (it was a repossession) and it had exactly 100,000 miles on it at the time. Fast forward six years later and I still have the car, with just over 243,000 miles on it! I have to say, the 2.4 Liter motor is absolutely bulletproof and the transmission is just as reliable. I've only had to do the necessary preventive maintenance and haven't had any major mechanical issues with the car. All in all, I think it was a really good investment. Thanks for listening!

I owned a '92 Galant LS and loved it until it was totaled by a poor driver. When I purchased the 2000 Galant ES, I was hoping for a similar experience. However, I encountered a few issues such as recalls and a noisy ride, which were disappointing. As I am now trying to sell it, I may take a loss, but I am confident that the car still has value for the right buyer.

  4. Green Braun 2024-01-15

I have noticed that the front tires shake excessively during breaking, which seems to be a common issue among Galant owners, including GTZ owners. Additionally, when going over a bump, it feels as if the front axle just can't take it, possibly due to the V6 engine producing too much torque. It appears that the torque distribution was not properly considered during the car's construction and design. As a result, the car can bolt forward if not handled carefully. Overall, I have had a negative experience with this car and regret purchasing it. Therefore, I would advise against buying it.

Positive 2000 Mitsubishi Galant car reviews

  1. Kris Crona 2024-09-24

This vehicle has been an excellent purchase, with only minor issues despite having been driven for a significant distance. The radiator was replaced after developing a small crack at 125K miles, and new rear struts were required a couple of years ago. However, these were the only significant repairs needed, and routine maintenance has kept the car running smoothly. The car is fun to drive, with a very smooth transmission and a peppy 4-cylinder engine. It still looks great, although the back seat is not particularly comfortable for adults, and the cup holders are awkwardly located. While it is on the smaller end of the mid-sized car spectrum, it is still a great vehicle with decent gas mileage of 22-28. Overall, this car has proven to be a reliable and enjoyable mode of transportation.

This vehicle handles nicely and controls uneven roads very well. I'm glad to hear that people have been surprised by its comfort and roomy feeling for a car this size.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I was lucky enough to find a great deal on a car with 40k miles for only 7500 usd. I'm really happy with my purchase because it's been super reliable and I haven't had to do any major repairs other than regular maintenance like brakes and fluids. I would definitely recommend the Galant to anyone looking for a reliable car. Even with 120k miles, my Galant still works perfectly and it's the perfect car for commuting. I don't think anything can beat it!

  4. Gonzalo Gaylord 2024-06-09

I own lots of cars. My wife picked this one on an impulse because of the styling and the gorgeous interior, and she is not an impulse buyer! Currently, I drive a BMW and have a bias toward them, but this car is exceptional in most every category - smooth, quiet, responsive and very sexy.

I just bought my car and have only had it for a week, but I'm already very impressed. This is my first new car and I'm really excited!
