Common 1996 Mitsubishi Galant problems
The Mitsubishi Galant, produced in 1996, has been known to have several common issues based on complaints from owners. These problems span across various components of the car, including the engine, transmission, electrical system, and suspension.
One of the most common problems reported is with the engine. Oil leaks are a prevalent issue, often caused by degraded engine gaskets or seals.
Transmission problems are another area of concern for the 1996 Mitsubishi Galant. Slipping, shifting issues, and outright failure are common complaints. These issues can be caused by worn clutch plates, damaged synchronizers, or low transmission fluid levels.
The electrical system has also been a source of problems for the 1996 Galant. Power windows may stop working, and battery drainage can occur due to faulty wiring or components.
Suspension issues are another common problem for the 1996 Galant. Strut mount failure, tie rod end issues, and wheel bearing problems have been reported by many owners. These issues can affect the car's handling and ride quality, and can lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.
In summary, the 1996 Mitsubishi Galant has had its share of issues, primarily related to the engine, transmission, electrical system, and suspension. However, many owners have found the car to be reliable when properly maintained. Regular maintenance tasks such as oil and filter changes, timing belt replacement, and brake maintenance can help prevent more serious issues from occurring. Despite the potential for significant repair costs, many owners still appreciate the Galant's stylish design, comfortable ride, and reliable performance when properly maintained.

1996 Mitsubishi Galant recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1996 Mitsubishi Galant.
- Manufacturer: AIRTEX PRODUCTS
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: CERTAIN AIRTEX FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLIES, P/N E7081H, SOLD FOR USE AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE WALL OF THE FLARED FITTING OF THE FUEL PUMP IS NOT THICK ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE MATING THREADED FITTINGS FROM BOTTOMING OUT BEFORE AN ADEQUATE SEAL IS ACHIEVED. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN LEAKAGE OF FUEL AT THE CONNECTION OF THE VEHICLE FUEL LINE AND THE FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FUEL LEAK COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: AIRTEX WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT AIRTEX AUTOMOTIVE AT 800-880-3056.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI AMERICA

- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT TO SEPARATE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH. THIS CAMPAIGN SUPERCEDES MMC'S PREVIOUS SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN, SEE 99V-066.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT FOR WEAR. BALL JOINTS THAT EXHIBIT WEAR BEYOND THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEWLY DESIGNED LATERAL ARM BALL JOINTS. BALL JOINTS THAT ARE WITHIN THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE CLEANED AND A SPECIAL SEALANT WILL BE APPLIED TO PREVENT INTRUSION OF MOISTURE.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI AMERICA
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. CRACKS CAN OCCUR IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK DUE TO AN IMPROPER SPOT WELD ON THE BAFFLE PLATE TO THE TOP PORTION OF THE FUEL TANK.
- Consequence: A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK COULD ALLOW FUEL OR FUMES TO ESCAPE. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE UPPER SURFACE OF THE FUEL TANK FOR ANY SIGNS OF CRACKING. IF NO CRACKING OR LEAKING IS FOUND, DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SEALING PROTECTOR PLATE. IF ANY CRACKING OR LEAKAGE IS FOUND, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI AMERICA

I love this car! It's been in my family for about 8 years (survived 2 undergrad colleges) and we've had very few problems with it. Right now it's at a good 155K mi and it seems like it can't wait to start up in the morning. I figure it's good for another 50K with regular oil changes. It's definitely a great buy- I would highly recommend this car to anyone!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my first car, a 95' Galant. After looking into many other cars, I finally test drove the Galant and fell in love with it! Despite having only 141 horses and a 4 cylinder, the car is incredibly powerful, especially when mated to the 5-speed manual. I've had a few minor issues, such as my alternator freezing due to leaving the car sitting in the cold winter snow for 3 months without running it. However, overall the car has been extremely reliable and I'm even considering selling it to a potential buyer. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my first car, which I bought back in November 2002. I have to say, it's been amazing to me! Despite what some people might say about Mitsus being unreliable, I haven't had any major issues with it. In fact, the engine sounds smoother than most newer cars! The only minor problem I had was when the alternator froze over, but that was my fault for leaving the car sitting in the cold for over 2 and a half months. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

All I have to say about this car is that it's the perfect combination of every use for your money. It's fast enough, comfortable enough, not too expensive to take care of, fun enough, and still not too out of fashion.

The brakes could use some improvement.

This is the second Mitsubishi I have owned. After the first year, there were some minor problems with the interior, such as plastic parts not fitting properly. The internal air filter disintegrated after 5 years of ownership. I have replaced the front brakes twice, the battery twice, and all the tires once. With high mileage, it still works well, although a timing belt may be needed for its next repair. Unfortunately, the tape deck and horn died last year, as well as the interior vanity light and trunk light. However, I love the Homelink system and it has good maneuverability in tight places. It can still get over 80 mph quickly, but it is a bit squishy with one infant seat in the center and another next to it. The car has good visibility with few blind spots and is still a reliable car.

The engine, radiator, crank pulley, exhaust, and tires have all been replaced around 115,000 miles. However, the overdrive is still not functioning properly. Overall, I am confident in the quality of the repairs made, despite the negative experience with the overdrive.

The best thing about this car is its reliability. Overall, I have been happy with it since I've had it for almost seven years. I feel as though it's been good to me. This is a pretty simple car that gets the job done and doesn't give you any problems, which is all I was looking for.
