Common 2005 Mitsubishi Galant problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant, several common problems have been reported:
- Ball Joint Failure: Another common problem is ball joint failure, which manifests as a knocking noise from the suspension when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. Replacing the ball joint is necessary to address this issue.
- Oil Leak: Owners have reported oil leaks in the Galant, commonly caused by a faulty driveshaft seal. If oil is noticed leaking onto the floor, the driveshaft seal at the back of the engine may need replacement to fix the leak.
- Engine Management Warning Light: The appearance of the engine management warning light on the dashboard is often linked to a faulty engine sensor, particularly the crankshaft position sensor. Replacing the sensor is crucial to resolve this warning light issue.
- Lack of Power/Misfiring: A common problem in the Mitsubishi Galant 2005 is a lack of power at higher speeds and misfiring, which can be attributed to a clogged throttle body. Cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner is typically required to address this issue.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant have faced. Addressing these concerns promptly can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

- Date Of Incident: 2018-03-16
- VIN: 4A3AB36F65E
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: LAST WEEK FRI MAR. 16, 2018, I DROVE MY 2005 MITSUBISHI GALLANT ES CAR INTO WORK. ON MY WAY, I HEARD A POP SOUND FROM THE CAR. THEN A VERY LOUD CAR NOISE AND FELT RATTLING, AND THE CAR DRIVE WAS NOT A SMOOTH ONE. I FIGURED IT WAS A FLAT TIRE. I WAS ENTERING THE I75 HIGHWAY. ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY, I PULLED ACROSS 3 LANES TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. THIS WAS 7 AM AND DARK, AND ALSO DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC SO LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. I DROVE ABOUT A FEW SECONDS ON THE SHOULDER, STOPPED THE CAR, AND PARKED THERE. I COULD SMELL BURNING METAL. I THEN CALLED AAA AND THE SERVICE DRIVER CAME AND CHANGED THE FLAT TIRE. THIS WAS NOT A SIMPLE PUNCTURED CAR TIRE. THE MICHELIN CAR TIRE HAD EXPLODED - THE CAR TIRE HAD COME OFF THE RIM. AFTER THIS EXPLODING CAR TIRE INCIDENT, I AM EMOTIONALLY SHAKEN AND SCARED. TO THINK THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED, AND NOT BE HERE TODAY BECAUSE OF A POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE TIRE. OR I COULD HAVE SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES, OR CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY. NOTE: 1.I PURCHASED THE 4 SETS OF TIRES FROM COSTCO ON DEC. 20, 2016, AND THE ODOMETER READING WAS 125,597 KM; AND RIGHT NOW, THE ODOMETER READING IS ABOUT 151,350 KM, THEREFORE THESE 4 SETS OF TIRES HAD ONLY BEEN DRIVEN 25,753 KM OR 25,753 KM / 1.60934 KM/MILE = 16,002 MILES OVER IN ABOUT 15 MONTHS. 2.THE VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY FROM CANADA, THEREFORE IT READS IN KM INSTEAD OF MILE. 3.I HAVE TAKEN PHOTOS OF THE EXPLODED TIRE WHICH COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE RIM. I CAN SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO YOU ANYTIME. 4.I WILL BE GOING TO COSTCO TO REPLACE THE TIRE THIS WEEK, I THINK COSTCO WILL WANT TO KEEP THE EXPLODED TIRE, SHOULD I GIVE IT TO COSTCO?

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-10-04
- VIN: 4A3AB46S45E
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: NOTHING EXTRAORDINARY LEADING UP TO THIS FAILURE BUT ON THE MORNING OF OCT 4TH I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 MITSUBISHI GALANT LS AT 55 MPH AND EXPERIENCED A TOTAL POWER STEERING FAILURE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN AND PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I THEN OPENED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS A FLUID COVERING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD. I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND A TOW TRUCK WAS DISPATCHED TO PICKUP THE VEHICLE AND DELIVER IT TO A MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE METRO MITSUBISHI IN BLOOMINGTON MINNESOTA. NOT THAT A STATEMENT BY A TOW TRUCK DRIVER IS LAW BUT HE MENTIONED THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME HE HAS SEEN THIS ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS HIS BELIEF THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF THIS ISSUE. METRO MITSUBISHI CALLED ME A FEW HOURS LATER TO NOTIFY ME THAT IT WAS INDEED A STEERING PUMP FAILURE AND THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET REPLACEMENT PARTS UNTIL THE NEXT DAY WHICH MEANT THAT I WAS NOW WITHOUT A VEHICLE BECAUSE THIS VEHICLE THAT I'M LEASING IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. THE PUMP WAS REPLACED BUT A STEERING FAILURE AT ANY TIME AND AT ANY SPEED IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOU RESPONSE TO THIS ISSUE. THANK YOU DOUGLAS NIZNICK. *NM
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-04-11
- VIN: 4A3AB76S05E

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-20
- VIN: 4A3AB36F54E
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: BOUGHT A NEW MITSUBISHI GALANT 2005. AT ABOUT 150 MILES DURING THE BREAK IN PERIOD I STARTED TO NOTICE A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT. AFTER THE BREAK IN PERIOD WHEN I COULD TAKE IT TO A HIGHER SPEED I ALSO NOTICED A DISTINCT SHIMMY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VIBRATION IS VERY PRONOUNCED BETWEEN 70 AND 80 MPH. AT THIS SPEED THE VIBRATION IS NOTICEABLE ON JUST ABOUT ANY ROAD SURFACE. THE VIBRATION IS FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL SHIMMY AND IN THE SEAT OF THE PANTS VIBRATION EMANATING FROM THE FRONT. THE COMPLAINT WAS INITIALLY ADDRESSED BY THE MITSUBISHI DEALER BY NOTING THAT TWO TIRES WERE OUT OF BALANCE AND RE-BALANCING. THIS DID NOT WORK. THEN THE VEHICLE WAS SENT TO A TIRE SPECIALIST WHERE A ROAD BALANCE WAS DONE AND ONE TIRE WHEEL COMBINATION THAT COULD NOT BE BALANCED THE TIRE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY THROUGH YOKOHAMA. THE PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY. MITSUBISHI WAS CONTACTED AND THE REGIONAL MANAGER FOR MITSUBISHI ORDERED TO REPLACE THE YOKOHAMA TIRES WITH MICHELIN. I ALLOWED A BREAK IN PERIOD FOR THE TIRES AND THIS HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THE TIRE SPECIALIST NOTED THAT IT COULD BE A BAD FRONT AXEL OR TRANSMISSION ENGINE MOUNTS. AT THIS POINT I FEEL IT IS A DEFECT SINCE THE WORK DONE WHILE CONSISTENT WITH BAD TIRES OR UNBALANCED TIRES HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN SEVERAL RE-BALANCINGS AND A NEW SET OF TIRES BY MICHELIN. THE PROBLEM OF FRONT VIBRATION AND THE SHIMMY IN THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINUES. *NM
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-04-15

2005 Mitsubishi Galant recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 45,988 MY 2005-2007 ENDEAVOR, GALANT, ECLIPSE COUPE, AND MY 2007 ECLIPSE SPYDER VEHICLES. THE BRACKET THAT IS THE ATTACHMENT POINT FOR THE LEFT REAR FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY FORMED DURING A METAL STAMPING PROCESS. THE PROCESS MAY HAVE CAUSED THE METAL TO HAVE A SPLIT IN THE AREA WHERE THE BOLT THAT HOLDS ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS LOCATED. IN THE EVENT THE FUEL TANK IS FULL AND THE VEHICLE IS SUBJECT TO A SEVERE COLLISION, THE BRACKET MAY BREAK AND ALLOW THE FUEL TANK TO DROP DOWN, POSSIBLY CAUSING A FUEL LEAK.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT TO SEE IF THE LEFT REAR FUEL TANK STRAP MOUNTING BRACKET HAS SPLITTING BEYOND A SPECIFIC LIMIT. VEHICLES WITH MODERATE TO SEVERE SPLITTING WILL BE REPAIRED USING A REINFORCEMENT CAP, A SPECIAL STRUCTURAL ADHESIVE, AND A RIVET TO REINFORCE THE FUEL TANK MOUNTING BRACKET. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 73,000 MY 2004-2006 GALLANT PASSENGER VEHICLES. DURING VEHICLE USE, THE IGNITION KEY INTERLOCK CABLE (WHICH IS A COMPONENT OF THE INTERLOCK SYSTEM) MAY ALLOW THE INTERLOCKING CAM TO FALL FORWARD AND ALLOW THE IGNITION KEY TO BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH WHEN THE GEARSHIFT MECHANISM IS NOT IN THE PARK POSITION.
- Consequence: IF THE DRIVER DOES NOT SHIFT TO PARK BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND CORRECT THESE VEHICLES FOR THE REPORTED CONDITION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 2, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-888-648-7820.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES, THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER, WHICH CONTROLS THE FLUID PRESSURE TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKES, MAY ALLOW BRAKE FLUID TO BYPASS INTERNALLY DURING STOPPING.
- Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN A PARTIAL LOSS OF BRAKING, INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES, AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 3, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

Great car! I purchased it over a 2005 Chrysler 300 Limited, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord. It has a great ride and handling. I purchased the GTS model and I don't feel like another 'cookie cutter' car on the road. It's unique and fun, and comes with a great warranty. The dealership was no pressure and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend the car and the dealership to all my friends!
-
Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice with your 2005 Mitsubishi Galant GTS. You mentioned that the price was within your budget, and that it drives smoothly with great handling and performance. The V6 engine sounds very powerful, and the styling is impressive. It's great to hear that you're happy with your purchase and I hope you enjoy many exciting miles on the road ahead!
-
The peppy 4-cylinder engine and dealer-added leather on the ES model caught our attention. It's a fun car to drive and offers great value for the money. We traded in our 2003 Eclipse 5-speed and this car is even quicker!
-
My spouse and I absolutely adore this car! It's spacious and speedy, even with just four cylinders, and the fuel efficiency is fantastic. I would highly recommend opting for the alloy wheels, as the plastic hubcaps can be a bit delicate.
-
This car is a blast to drive! I recently upgraded from a 2003 Galant and the difference is night and day. The back seat is now spacious enough to comfortably fit a full-sized person. The 3.8 V6 engine is a powerhouse compared to the 2.4L 4 cylinder. Overall, Mitsubishi did an excellent job with the redesign. Although, it does bear a striking resemblance to the new Honda Accord, which I also happen to own. It's almost as if someone engaged in a little industrial espionage! :)

Initially, I enjoyed my Galant, but the recent malfunction of the AC has made driving unbearable. The all-black leather interior exacerbates the heat, making it feel like an inferno. After taking the car to the shop, I was informed that the air conditioner requires a repair that costs $941.00.
