Common Mitsubishi Galant 1994 problems
The 1994 Mitsubishi Galant was a compelling alternative to the Honda Accord, offering a sporty image, a turbocharged engine lineup, and a groundbreaking four-wheel multi-link suspension. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners.
- Engine and Transmission Issues: The 1994 Mitsubishi Galant's engine and transmission have been reported to have several issues, including excessive oil consumption, coolant leaks, and transmission failure.
- Suspension and Steering Problems: The 1994 Mitsubishi Galant's suspension and steering systems have also been reported to have issues. The four-wheel multi-link suspension, which was a world's first for a front-wheel-drive car, was known to wear out prematurely, leading to a rough ride and poor handling.
- Body and Interior Problems: The 1994 Mitsubishi Galant's body and interior have also been reported to have several issues. The exterior paint was known to fade and peel, particularly on vehicles that were exposed to the elements for extended periods.
In conclusion, while the 1994 Mitsubishi Galant was a compelling alternative to the Honda Accord, it had its share of common problems that have been reported by owners. MY DAUGHTER HAD TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE THE INCIDENT BECAUSE SHE SOMETIMES HEARD A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEEL AREA. THE SHOP WRONGLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS TIE ROD ENDS. THEY SAID THERE WERE NO IMMEDIATE SAFETY CONCERNS. *JB

- Manufacturer: AIRTEX PRODUCTS
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: CERTAIN AIRTEX FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLIES, P/N E7081H, SOLD FOR USE AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE WALL OF THE FLARED FITTING OF THE FUEL PUMP IS NOT THICK ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE MATING THREADED FITTINGS FROM BOTTOMING OUT BEFORE AN ADEQUATE SEAL IS ACHIEVED. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN LEAKAGE OF FUEL AT THE CONNECTION OF THE VEHICLE FUEL LINE AND THE FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FUEL LEAK COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: AIRTEX WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT AIRTEX AUTOMOTIVE AT 800-880-3056.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI AMERICA
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT

- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT TO SEPARATE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH. THIS CAMPAIGN SUPERCEDES MMC'S PREVIOUS SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN, SEE 99V-066.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT FOR WEAR. BALL JOINTS THAT EXHIBIT WEAR BEYOND THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEWLY DESIGNED LATERAL ARM BALL JOINTS. BALL JOINTS THAT ARE WITHIN THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE CLEANED AND A SPECIAL SEALANT WILL BE APPLIED TO PREVENT INTRUSION OF MOISTURE.

- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY AND REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH.

Great car with clearly progressive features. It's fun to drive and I love the attention to detail for comfort.
-
The engine boasts an impressive torque of 155 ft-lb for a 4-cylinder and still manages to maintain good mileage (24cty/28hwy with automatic). The front coil-over shocks and fully independent setup are also great features. However, it's worth noting that pre-94.5 models have a lower arm recall and the rear arm upper bushings tend to fall apart at 100k miles (94.5 models were upgraded to address this issue). Additionally, the rear wheel bearings may need to be replaced at 120k miles and the front inner/outer tie rods should be replaced at 100k miles, although this may impact longevity for handling. It's recommended to change the balance shaft (small) belt when replacing the timing belt, even if not specified. Despite these considerations, the engine runs strong at 130k miles with no smoke or leaks, making it a super reliable option. The only downside is the automatic transmission, which can be a bit shifty and may impact mileage, but overall it's still a great value.

I had a 1991 before this one and loved it. When I got into an accident, I saw this car and fell in love with it. Right now, I have a lot of custom engine work done to it and it's holding up great!
-
On the whole, this car has been great! It's very dependable and I get approximately 25 mpg. It still runs well at 133,000+ miles. I've had to replace the timing belt twice (per manual recommendations) and usual maintenance such as brakes, belts, and tires. The only major repair I had to make was to replace the distributor. I intend to keep driving this car until it starts costing too much to repair. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone.

I recently purchased this car from a friend who kept it in their garage and performed routine maintenance. It had 100k miles when I bought it and rode great for the first year. However, I did experience some electrical problems such as the power windows' motor breaking, which unfortunately happened in December. The power locks also had a mind of their own and I got locked out several times. More recently, at 133k miles, I had some big problems with the water pump and heater core. Unfortunately, the heater core part was only available in Japan and cost $700. I just wanted to share my experience with certain foreign cars and warn you that they could potentially cost you big bucks to fix.

Hi there! When I first got my car, I had to wait for a month to get it because it was getting the transmission replaced. At that time, it had 47,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with it recently. After 3 months and 6 transmissions later, I've decided to give up on it. I'm only getting $750 back for my rebuilt transmission, and my car won't be worth much without a transmission. Since 1994, my car has had a total of 10 transmissions in the 6 years I've had it.

The Galant 8000 broke down and required a new water pump while I was in another state, costing me $1500. When it broke down again in my state, I had to spend $1600 to fix the wheel bearings and other issues. I ended up trading it in within a year of ownership, which added $8000 to my new car loan. Despite the challenges, I learned a lot from this experience.
