Common 1998 Mitsubishi Galant problems
The 1998 Mitsubishi Galant has several common issues reported by owners, which include gears slipping, ball joint failure, oil leaks, engine management warning light, lack of power or misfiring, and throttle body clogging.
Gear slipping is a known problem, especially in reverse, due to a faulty rear housing and reverse clutch assembly. Replacing these components will resolve the issue.
Ball joint failure can cause a knocking noise from the suspension when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. Fitting a replacement ball joint will fix the problem.
Oil leaks are often caused by a failed driveshaft seal, which can be replaced to rectify the situation.
The engine management warning light on the dashboard is usually caused by a faulty engine sensor, such as the crankshaft position sensor. Replacing the faulty sensor will resolve the problem.
Lack of power or misfiring can be caused by a clogged throttle body. Cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner will resolve the issue.
The throttle body can get clogged up, leading to a lack of power at higher speeds and unresponsive acceleration. These are common symptoms of the throttle body being blocked. Cleaning out the throttle body with some carb cleaner will resolve the issue.
In addition to these common issues, the 1998 Mitsubishi Galant also has some weak points in its suspension. The lower front arm may develop backlash after 15,000 kilometers, but this does not necessarily require immediate replacement. The lever usually serves about 50,000 kilometers, and the resource of the remaining suspension arms is about 100,000 kilometers. The lower trailing arms of the rear suspension often survive up to 160,000 kilometers. However, wheel bearings have a resource of about 50,000 kilometers, and front brake discs on many Mitsubishi often wear out faster than expected
The Galant's engines and suspension types also vary depending on the place of production. Cars sold in Europe and Japan have different external body parts and interior trims than those sold in North America, which are assembled in the USA. The range of engines includes seven petrol and one diesel engine, with varying power outputs and reliability
In summary, the 1998 Mitsubishi Galant has several common issues that owners have reported, including gear slipping, ball joint failure, oil leaks, engine management warning light, lack of power or misfiring, and throttle body clogging. Additionally, the car's suspension has some weak points, particularly in the lower front arm and wheel bearings. However, the car's engines and suspension types vary depending on the place of production, with different external body parts and interior trims for cars sold in Europe, Japan, and North America.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-09
- VIN: 4A3AJ56GXWE
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ON JAN. 9, 2013, WHILE I WAS BACKING UP MY MITSUBISHI GALANT 1998 (VIN # [XXX]) IN MY DRIVEWAY, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR STARTED MOVING ON ITS OWN AND I HAD TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. AFTER BACKING UP, WHEN I DROVE FORWARD, MY CAR SEEMED TO BE QUITE JUMPY AND WANTED TO LURCH FORWARDS. AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT ABOUT HALF A MILE FROM HOME, WHILE I WAS STOPPED, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR STARTED MOVING FORWARDS. I IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED HARD ON THE BRAKE. THIS WAS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL AND SCARY. LATER WHILE GOING DOWN A HILL, I COULD SENSE THAT THE CAR WAS AGAIN QUITE JUMPY AND WANTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I STOPPED AT A SHOP FOR SOMETHING AND THEN WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE CAR AND TURNED ON THE ENGINE AGAIN, I NOTICED THAT THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAD JUST COME ON. I FELT THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE AND HAD IT TOWED TO KLAHANIE CHEVRON IN ISSAQUAH, WA, VERY CLOSE TO MY HOUSE. I WAS LATER INFORMED BY THEM THAT THE ??IDLE CONTROL MOTOR?? FOR MY CAR WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND DUE TO THIS I WAS EXPERIENCING ALL THESE CAR ??JUMPINESS?? ISSUES. THE ??IDLE CONTROL MOTOR?? WAS REPLACED AND NOW THE CAR APPEARS TO BE RUNNING FINE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MORE THAN UP TO DATE WITH MY CAR MAINTENANCE. THE BEHAVIOR OF THIS CAR IN WHICH THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN IS DANGEROUS AND MITSUBISHI ENGINEERS SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS FOR POSSIBLE RECALL\REMEDIATION, SINCE THIS CAN GREATLY ENDANGER THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IN THE CAR AND ANYBODY ELSE SHARING THE ROAD AT THAT TIME. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you my experience with my Galant, which I bought brand new back in 1997. It's been such a great car, and I've put around 130K miles on it over the years. One of my favorite things about it is the acceleration - it really zips in and out of traffic and is so fun to drive! I will say that when I first got it, it used to jerk a bit when starting out on the road, but I quickly learned how to manage the gas pedal to avoid that. Over the last year or so, I've had to replace a few things here and there, but considering I've had it for 15 years, I really can't complain. Plus, a mechanic friend of mine has been able to do most of the work for me on the cheap, which has been a huge help. Unfortunately, it's time for me to upgrade to an SUV, so I'm having to sell my Galant. It's definitely bittersweet, but I'm excited for what's to come!

This is a reliable car with a touch of fun, but not too much sportiness.
-
The only issue we've encountered is that the balance shaft needs to be inspected after reaching the 100,000-mile mark. Unfortunately, our shaft broke at 160,000 miles and caused some damage. However, overall, the car has been incredibly sporty and handles like a dream.

I have my 1998 Galant, which I bought new in June 1999. I cannot express how satisfied I am with it. I have it serviced every 10,000 miles, and it has never let me down. It's a joy to drive and incredibly dependable. I highly recommend it without any hesitation.

I purchased my Galant two years ago with 39K miles from a reputable dealership. Despite the dealership replacing the transmission due to evident transmission problems, occasional hard shifts in the low gears still occur. However, the car has been excellent overall, with great gas mileage, enjoyable driving experience, and perfectly functioning systems. It has proven to be a very dependable vehicle.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your first Mitsubishi! It seems like it was a good value buy, especially after your Ford Prope expired unexpectedly. It's great to hear that the car is still in good condition after ten months and 66,000 miles, and that the finish still looks new. The fold down rear seats are a useful feature for expanding the trunk and accommodating larger objects. I understand that you would prefer higher gas mileage, but it's good to hear that you're still satisfied with the car despite this. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I purchased this car with 41k miles and added an extended warranty. Unfortunately, I experienced some trouble just a few weeks later. I took it in for servicing, paid the deductible, and waited for 7 hours. However, they returned the car untouched, stating that the sunroof (which was inoperable) was aftermarket and therefore not covered. Additionally, they claimed that the calipers were not actually malfunctioning, despite wearing through the brakes at an angle. At 60,200 miles, my shift-select cable frayed and stopped working. I took it to the dealer, but they refused to service it since it had exceeded 60k miles. Now, at 93k miles, the transmission has completely failed, and I am ready to move on to a better make. Although this car is great when it's new, I recommend getting rid of it after about 50k miles. I am excited to switch to a Subaru Forester!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Mit. Galant. I bought it used at 49k miles and it ran great for a while. Unfortunately, at 63k miles, the transmission unexpectedly went out. I had to pay $1950 to rebuild it at Aamco. It turns out that transmission problems are quite common with this model. While it's running fine now, I'm having trouble selling it since it's not worth much in the used car market. I've decided to move on to a better make. Thanks for listening!

The transmission in the Galant is known to have issues. Despite following the scheduled maintenance, my transmission started slipping after only 60,000 miles. However, after consulting with a Mitsubishi mechanic who I have become friends with, I have learned that this is a common problem with this car. In addition to the transmission, I have also experienced problems with the electrical system, A/C compressor, and power antenna. Despite these issues, I remain confident in my ability to address them and keep my Galant running smoothly.

In 2003, I was in search of a mid-size car that was not too expensive after my 1996 Geo Prism was totaled. I came across a Galant with only 36,000 miles on it and thought it was a good deal. However, after three days, I noticed some issues with the transmission. I was hoping it would go away, but unfortunately, it started acting up at 63,000 miles. I had to pay $2,300 at Amcoo transmission to fix it, but after six months, the problems resurfaced. Eventually, I had to trade in the car, which was not worth much. While my experience with the Galant was not great, I would advise caution when considering a Mitsubishi.
