Common 2002 Mitsubishi Galant problems

The Mitsubishi Galant, produced in 2002, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from transmission problems to engine management and sensor failures.

  • Ball Joint Failure: Another common problem is ball joint failure, which results in a knocking noise coming from the suspension when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. This issue can be resolved by fitting a replacement ball joint.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are a common problem in the Mitsubishi Galant, often caused by the driveshaft seal. If oil is leaking onto the floor, it is likely coming from the back of the engine, and replacing the driveshaft seal should rectify the situation.
  • Engine Management Warning Light: If the engine management warning light appears on the dashboard, it is usually caused by a faulty engine sensor, most commonly the crankshaft position sensor. Fitting a replacement crankshaft position sensor should resolve the problem.
  • Lack of Power/Misfiring: The throttle body can get clogged up on the Galant, leading to a lack of power at higher speeds and unresponsive acceleration. This issue can also cause the engine to misfire. Cleaning out the throttle body with carb cleaner can resolve the problem.
  • Power Window Motor Failure: Some Galant owners have reported issues with the power window motor, specifically on the driver's side. This issue may require replacement of the motor to resolve the problem.
  • Catalytic Converter Failure: The catalytic converter can fail, requiring replacement to ensure the vehicle continues to operate correctly.
  • Small Oil Leak: Some Galant owners have reported a small oil leak, which may require regular monitoring and topping up of the oil level.

These common problems with the Mitsubishi Galant can impact the vehicle's reliability and overall performance. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become more significant problems.

Negative 2002 Mitsubishi Galant car reviews

  1. Sanford Casper 2024-10-19

    If you're 5'7

  2. Declan Kassulke 2024-09-13

You made an excellent choice with this car! It starts up every time (after changing the battery cables), runs great, and keeps up on the highway without any issues. Plus, all accessories work perfectly. I was really impressed with the materials and workmanship of the interior, especially compared to other models in its price range. Overall, I'm nothing but satisfied with this car and I always feel joy every time I start up the engine.

  3. Waldo Adams 2024-09-04

I had trouble finding a carseat that would fit my sportscar after having my son. I thought Mitsubishi was offering a great deal, but unfortunately, I'm not too impressed with the car's appearance or performance. Now that I want to trade it in, I've found that its value has decreased significantly. I'm feeling frustrated with my decision to buy this car, whether new or used.

  4. Mavis Dooley 2024-07-26

The engine is certainly reliable, but it does consume quite a bit of fuel for a 4-cylinder. Additionally, there is noticeable road noise and the ride is not as smooth as some may prefer. However, my 94 Accord still manages to give me an impressive 30 miles/gal and provides a more solid ride overall. If you're considering purchasing this car, it may be worth looking into buying used as the value tends to depreciate quite quickly when bought brand new. Alternatively, if you do decide to buy new, it may be worth keeping the car for at least a year to get the most out of your investment.

  5. Cruz Murazik 2024-07-21

It's great to hear that you find it good on the road, with great speed and braking!

Positive 2002 Mitsubishi Galant car reviews

  1. Muhammad Wisoky 2025-01-02

I wanted to share my positive experience with my 2002 Mitsubishi Galant ES. I purchased it new from Rice Mitsubishi and it has been a reliable car for me with 260,000 miles on it. It still runs great and looks good too. I have only had to replace one headlight, which is a minor issue. I believe this car is just as dependable as any Honda or Toyota, as long as you follow the routine maintenance schedule for Mitsubishis, such as changing the timing belt every 60,000 miles (which costs around $600). Overall, I have had no major issues with my Galant and it still has impressive acceleration and handling, even at 260k miles.

  2. Morgan Gusikowski 2024-11-29

We rented this vehicle and took a 2000 mile drive vacation. It was an outstanding experience. I am currently looking to purchase my own.

  3. Tito Wiegand 2024-11-10

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. We actually bought it used during a really snowy time and I have to say, it was a lifesaver! I've never driven a car that handled so well in the snow. One thing I really appreciated was that it had just the right amount of features - not too many, not too few. I've noticed that a lot of cars these days are loaded with features that you never end up using, but still have to pay for. Luckily, that wasn't the case with this one. Plus, since we bought it used, we didn't have to worry about losing too much value off the lot. Thanks for listening!

  4. Graham Hettinger 2024-10-27

I'm glad to hear that your 2002 Galant is still running strong after all these years! It's unfortunate that you've had some issues with oil leaks and wheel alignment, but it's great to hear that it has never left you stranded. If Mitsubishi Motors were to bring the Galant back to the market, would you consider purchasing another one? Overall, it sounds like you're a satisfied customer and I'm happy to hear that!

  5. Orion Sauer 2024-09-28

You have a very solid car! It's great to hear that you've had it for 3 years now and it's been running well with only minor issues with the brakes. It's important to get only Mitsubishi brakes to avoid any problems with the rotors, but it's definitely worth the extra $20. Overall, it sounds like a great, light, and economical car. It's also reassuring to hear that your most recent check-up didn't reveal any issues that could arise in the near future. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!
