Common 1989 Mitsubishi Galant problems
The Mitsubishi Galant 1989 is known for several common problems, including gear slipping, ball joint failure, driveshaft seal leaks, engine management warning light, and throttle body blockage.
Gear slipping is a common issue in the Galant, particularly in reverse. This problem is caused by a worn-out rear housing and reverse clutch assembly, which can be replaced to resolve the issue.
Another common problem in the Galant is a failed ball joint, which can cause a knocking noise from the suspension when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. Fitting a replacement ball joint will resolve the issue.
Leaks from the driveshaft seal are also common in the Galant. If you notice oil leaking onto the floor, the driveshaft seal is the first place to check. The leak will be coming from the back of the engine. Replacing the driveshaft seal should rectify the situation.
The engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard is usually caused by a faulty engine sensor, specifically the crankshaft position sensor. Fitting a replacement crankshaft position sensor will resolve the issue.
The throttle body can get clogged up in the Galant, leading to a lack of power at higher speeds, unresponsive acceleration, and engine misfiring. These are common symptoms of the throttle body being blocked. Cleaning out the throttle body with carb cleaner will resolve the issue.
Exhaust manifolds are known to crack in the Galant, particularly at around the 150,000 km mark. Check the manifold carefully for any sign of cracking that might need to be addressed.
Finally, the Galant's technology may reduce the effects of the car's mass, making it feel less different from its 2 wheel drive, two wheel-steer sister. This can lead to a lack of tension and excitement in the driving experience.
These common problems in the Mitsubishi Galant 1989 can be resolved with the appropriate repairs and maintenance. However, it is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

1989 Mitsubishi Galant recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 1989 Mitsubishi Galant.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI AMERICA
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.
- Consequence: THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.
