Common Problems with the Mitsubishi Galant 2003

  • Braking System Problems:
Another common complaint among Mitsubishi Galant 2003 owners is related to the braking system. Proper brake function is crucial for safety, and issues with brakes can pose significant risks. When purchasing a used Galant, it is essential to thoroughly inspect the brakes to ensure they work correctly and that the car can brake in a straight line. Additionally, checking for any signs of uneven tire wear can help identify potential brake system issues early on.
  • Engine Stalling and Performance Issues:
Some owners have experienced engine stalling, low idle, and jerking while driving the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. These symptoms can be indicative of various underlying problems, including issues with the throttle body, sensors like the crankshaft position sensor, or even the oxygen (O2) sensor. Proper diagnosis and repair of these components are necessary to address engine performance issues and prevent further damage to the vehicle.
  • Oil Leaks:
Oil leaks are another common problem reported by owners of the Mitsubishi Galant 2003. Detecting oil leaks, especially from the driveshaft seal at the back of the engine, is crucial to prevent potential engine damage and maintain proper lubrication. Replacing the driveshaft seal can resolve this issue and prevent further oil leakage, ensuring the engine's longevity and performance.
  • Gears Slipping:
Gears slipping, particularly in reverse, has been identified as a common issue with the Mitsubishi Galant 2003. This problem often requires replacing the rear housing and reverse clutch assembly to rectify the slipping gears. Addressing this problem promptly is essential to maintain the vehicle's drivability and prevent potential transmission damage.

By addressing these common problems reported by owners of the Mitsubishi Galant 2003, car owners can better understand the potential issues they may encounter with this vehicle and take proactive measures to maintain its performance and reliability.

  • Summary: AFTER REPLACING FRONT/REAR BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS, AND ROTORS PLUS APPLYING THE PROPER LUBRICANT BRAKES NOT ONLY STILL SQUEAL BUT I AM HAVING OCCASIONAL GRINDING MAINLY COMING FROM THE FRONT DISC. HAVE HAD THEM INSPECTED BY MULTIPLE MECHANICS. THEY SAID EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE. DIAGNOSIS HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED NOT ONLY BY MECHANICS BUT APPARENTLY BY MITSUBISHI. THIS IS MY ONLY TRANSPORTATION AFTER JUST HAVING TO LEASE THIS VEHICLE TO FIND OUT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE THAT HAS NOT HAD ATTENTION FROM MITSUBISHI. I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED AMERICAN MADE VEHICLES BECAUSE OF TOO MANY FEARS FROM FOREIGN MANUFACTURES. I CHOSE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE MITSUBISHI HAS GREAT DESIGNS. AS FOR PRODUCING A RECALL FOR THIS VERY KNOWN PROBLEM. IT SEEMS LIKE PRODUCING THIS RECALL WOULD ONLY PUT MITSUBISHI FURTHER IN DEBT. IF HONOR IS WHAT YOUR CULTURE LIVE BY, THEN HONOR THIS MISTAKE BEFORE MANY LIVES ARE LOST. *TR

A FEW MINUTES LATER, I SAW FIRE COMING OUT OF THE LOUDSPEAKER ON THE FRONT RIGHT DOOR. A GUY FROM THE TIRE SHOP HELPED ME TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. AFTER I MADE SURE THAT IT WAS SAFE ENOUGH FOR ME TO DRIVE, I DROVE MY CAR TO MY REGULAR AUTO SHOP TO GET IT CHECKED. THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR WAS MELTED (HALFWAY MELTED, BECAUSE THE FIRE WAS HANDLED EARLY) AND BLEW THE FUSE. *TR

IT STARTED CHALKING AND CHIPPING AND I'VE NOTICED PRETTY MUCH EVERY MITSUBISHI I SEE ON THE ROAD HAS THE SAME ISSUE. WE ALL PAY GOOD MONEY FOR THESE AND MITSUBISHI ONLY RECALLED THE "BLACK PAINT" THEY NEED TO RECALL THEM ALL BECAUSE ALL OF THEM ARE IN HORRIBLE SHAPE. MITSUBISHI NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.!!!!!!! • Summary: TURNED HEAT ON AND HEARD A RATTELING NOISE UNDER DASH, WHEN HEAT CAME ON NOISE STOPPED. TURNED HEAT ON A WEEK LATER, NOTHING, ONLY COLD AIR. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SAYS HEATER CORE, AFTER REPLACING THERMOSTAT AND COOLANT SENSOR. DEALERSHIP SAYS HEATER CONTROL VALVE, EITHER WAY, WITH SEEING HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME THING, THERE IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM AT THE MANUFACTURING LEVEL. MAYBE MITSUBISHI SHOULD LOOK AT DOING SOMETHING LIKE ACCEPTING FULL RESPONSIBILITY AND REPAIRING THESE CARS. WITH THE ECONOMY WHAT IT IS THERE ARE FEW PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO AFFORD THIS EXPENSE, MYSELF INCLUDED. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP US! WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER ALWAYS GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK? *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-02-04
  • VIN: 4A3AA46G43E
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: IN THE LATE WINTER OF 2011 MY CAR HEATER BEGAN TO MAKE STRANGE NOISES THEN WOULD WORK FINE. SOON AFTER THAT HAPPENED, THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING. ONLY COLD AIR WOULD PUSH THROUGH THE SYSTEM. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE AC IS NOT CONSIDERED A NECESSITY, BUT I BEG TO DIFFER ON HEAT, CONSIDERING OUR TECHNOLOGICAL STATE. A HEATER KEEPS WINDOWS DEFROSTED AND CLEAR OF HUMIDITY THAT WOULD OTHERWISE CLOUD VISION OR WORSE, COMPLETELY HINDER TOTAL VISIBILITY. THE IDEA OF HAVING HEAT IN A CAR SEEMS LIKE A LUXURY BUT, IN REALITY IT IS REALLY A BASIC DRIVING NEED. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE AS TO WHY A CONSUMER SHOULD PAY $20,000, BRAND NEW, FOR A CAR THAT'S HEATER IS ALL TOO OFTEN BROKE BEFORE 60,000 MILES. THE COST OF REPAIR CAN EASILY COST $1000, DUE TO THE LABOR. THERE HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTS OF THEM BREAKING AGAIN, ONE YEAR LATER. THE HEATER SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE RESEARCHED AND ADDRESSED IN THE 03' GALANTS. IT KEEPS THE WINDOWS CLEAR SO CONSUMERS CAN SAFELY DRIVE THEIR CAR. *TR

  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: HEATER CORE IN 2003 GALANT HAS GONE OUT, WHICH MEANS NO HEAT IN VEHICLE. QUOTES FOR REPAIR ARE BETWEEN 900-1300, LABOR BEING 5-6 HOURS. I WAS TOLD THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON DEFECT IN THE GALANT. THERE WAS AN IDENTICAL VEHICLE AT THE REPAIR SHOP WITH EXACT SAME PROBLEM. FURTHER SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM & SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A DEFECT THAT MITSUBISHI MOTORS SHOULD CONSIDER INVESTIGATING. *LN

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-11-20
  • VIN: 4A3AA46G03E
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I WAS WITH MY SON LEAVING A STORE, WHILE IT WAS 38 DEGREES OUTSIDE. AFTER WE GOT IN THE CAR AND I TURNED ON THE HEATER, IT BEGAN MAKING A FLUTTERING SOUND UNDER THE DASH AS IF THE VENTS WERE OPENING UP. WITH THE KNOB ALL THE WAY TO THE RED POSITION AND THE OTHER KNOB IN THE WINDOW DEFROST POSITION, I WAITED FOR THE WINDOWS TO DEFROST AND THE HEAT TO MAKE THE CAR WARM. THE WINDOWS NEVER DEFROSTED AND THE HEAT NEVER CAME ON. I HAD TO DRIVE HOME WITH THE WINDOW DOWN IN THE COLD, AND MY SON FREEZING IN THE BACK SEAT. I HAD IT CHECKED OUT AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THIS IS A VERY POPULAR PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-10-13
  • VIN: 4A3AA46H63E
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THE HEATER CONTROL VALVE BEGAN MAKING CLICKING NOISES ABOUT A MONTH AGO IN MY 2003 MITSUBISHI GALANT V6 LS. THE CAR HAS ONLY 59,000 MILES ON IT. THEN THIS MORNING WITH OUTSIDE TEMPERATE OF 41 DEGREES HERE IN MINNEAPOLIS THE HEAT WOULD NOT TURN ON. THE HEATER CONTROL VALVE IS NOW STUCK IN THE COLD MODE. I HAD TO DRIVE MY 2 YEAR OLD TO DAY CARE IN A COLD CAR. THE REPLACEMENT COST BY THE DEALER IS $1000. THE INTERNET FINDING SHOWS MOST GALANT OWNERS HAVE HAD FAILED HEATER CONTROL VALVE. THIS CAN PUT DRIVERS IN UNSAFE SITUATIONS BECAUSE WE CAN NOT DEFROST THE WINDSHIELD WHEN ITS COLD OUTSIDE.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-09-18
  • VIN: 4A3AA46H83E

NO SOONER DID I REPLACE THAT AND THEN HEAT SELECTOR QUIT WORKING. CAN NOT CHANGE FROM VENTS TO DEFROST. MECHANIC SAID HEATER BOX WARPED AND COST ABOUT 2500.00 TO FIX THIS. NOW PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY, THE RADIATOR BURST OPEN ON THE FRONT SIDE. ABOUT A 4 INCH OPENING JUST TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF CAP IF YOU ARE FACING THE CAR. MECHANIC HAS SAID ALL OF THIS IS VERY COMMON IN THESE CARS AND MITSUBISHI SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO TAKE CARE OF THESE PROBLEMS AS EVERY GALANT MADE HAS HAD SAME ISSUES.. *TR

HAVE DODGED SOME MAJOR CRASHES DUE TO MY SEAT SLIDING. EVER SINCE I GOT MY CAR WHEN IT CAME OUT IN 03' THE DRIVER SEAT SLIPS WHEN IT SHOULD BE LOCKED HAPPENS RANDOMLY (EXTREMELY UNSAFE) MITSUBISHI SHOULD FIX OR REPLACE THE SEAT MECHANISM BEFORE MORE PEOPLE GET INJURED. FEELS LIKE IT DECIDES WHEN TO LOCK AND WHEN TO "LET GO" SENDING ME INTO A SLIDE TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. IT'S PRETTY MUCH A DEATH TRAP. *TR

Negative 2003 Mitsubishi Galant car reviews

  1. Gianni Watsica 2024-08-13

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Mitsubishi Galant ES. I purchased it used in August 2003 with approximately 30,000 miles on it. While it seemed like a good deal at the time, I never truly fell in love with the car. Unfortunately, there have been a few little things that have gone wrong over the past year and a half. The most annoying problem has been squeaky brakes. Despite taking the car to the dealer at least 5 times, the brakes are still quite loud. Additionally, I find the design of the car to be a bit boring, both inside and out. While it may not be the best car for highway acceleration, it's perfectly fine once you're up to speed. However, I'm currently in the market for a new car and I'm excited to explore other options. Thank you for listening to my story!

  2. Daryl Powlowski 2024-08-11

Hi there! We noticed that the parts may be a bit more prone to dents than expected. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we're always here to help if you need any assistance!

  3. Narciso Nolan 2024-06-07

I'm so glad you got a car this year! It cost you $9,000, which is a great deal. Although it had 60,000 miles on it, it's still in great condition. The gas mileage isn't the best, but it's not too different from your previous SUV. You can get about 200 miles to the tank, which is comparable to the Jeep you had. The exterior of the car is nice, but the interior is just OK. It's not the most luxurious or stylish car out there, but it can still be a good car.

  4. Jarrell Deckow 2024-04-15

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I purchased from a rental company. Overall, it's been a great car, but I have had some trouble with the heater/air conditioner. Interestingly, a co-worker who owns a 2002 model is experiencing the same issue. The only other downside has been the gas mileage, which was a bit disappointing. But all in all, the car has treated me well!

  5. Burley Steuber 2024-03-25

The Galant LS is a stylish car with a great interior design. While the advertised fuel economy is 20 city mpg and 26 highway mpg, I have consistently observed a lower fuel economy of 16-18 mpg despite switching to mid-grade fuel. Additionally, the fuel gauge seems to be inaccurate, with only 100 miles of range from a full tank down to 3/4, 80 miles from 3/4 to 1/2, and 40 miles from 1/2 to 1/4. Although the temperature control can be a bit finicky at times, overall, the Galant LS is a reliable and impressive vehicle.

  1. Emmet Leannon 2024-11-10

I recently traded in my car that I had since 2003. Overall, it was a very reliable car and I never had any major problems with it. Although, I did get rear-ended twice and lost control of the vehicle once while trying to avoid a driver on their cell phone, resulting in a hit on the passenger side. However, I was fortunate enough to walk away without a scratch and relatively minor property damage. If you have the means, I would recommend going for a new car or one made in the last couple of years. While this car is reliable for its age, the safety features that come standard in cars today are much better than they were in 2003, such as curtain airbags and stability control.

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you're having a blast with the V6 engine. The car is so responsive, it must be a joy to drive. It's great to hear that the car is quiet and the stereo sounds good. The seats sound comfortable and spacious too. It's also wonderful to hear that you had a great experience at Carmax. With the $2500 cash incentive, you got a great deal on the car. It's definitely the best value for your money. Enjoy your new ride!

I bought this car for my mom at the end of 03. It has been a reliable car, requiring only routine maintenance for 4.5 years. However, I did encounter two issues at around 55,000 miles that I think you should be aware of. Firstly, the heater began failing intermittently, with vents blowing but no hot air. This turned out to be a common issue with Galants, and fixing it can be expensive unless you do it yourself. Secondly, the driver's power window began to fail intermittently around 57,000 miles.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you how much I enjoy driving my brand new 03' Mitsubish Galant ES. It's such a fun and comfortable car to drive, and I love how sporty and fuel efficient it is!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Galant ES V6. Even though I'm only seventeen, I've owned it for six months and I have to say, it's been an excellent car for someone my age. It's reliable, safe, and fun to drive without being too overwhelming. The acceleration is strong and the handling is secure, but not so much that you could end up hurting yourself. Overall, I have no complaints about the car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great four-door sedan.
