Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

We found out the same car/year has a recall but this was not issued to my specific vehicle. https://www.kbb.com/mitsubishi/eclipse/2004/recall/ I requested Mitsubishi Motors to check the car and give me compensation and they denied. We have a case number with them. The car showed the check engine light but we changed spark plug cables and alternator. It seemed fine otherwise.

  • Model: Mitsubishi Eclipse 2009
  • Report Received Date: 2015-06-02
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Eclipse vehicles manufactured April 20, 2005, to February 13, 2009, and 2007-2009 Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured December 23, 2005, to February 13, 2009. Due to corrosion inside the antil-lock brake system (ABS) unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. • Consequence: A sudden reduction of braking performance may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, flush and clean the ABS hydraulic unit using high grade brake fluid, free of charge. If the inspection shows that the valves may seize, the ABS unit will be replaced. The recall began on July 21, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-15-004.

Latest negative Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Austyn Herman 2025-09-09

    Vehicle year: 1996

This car is a blast to drive! It's fast, fun, and looks great. The 140hp I4 engine provides just enough power to give it that sports car feeling. It's a reliable car for daily driving, but keep in mind that you may need to replace the rotors every 20k miles. While it may not be as quick as the GS-T and GSX, it can still reach a top speed of 135mph. When it comes to street racing, it may lag a bit, but it still gets the job done with a quarter-mile time of low 16's to high 15's. The gas mileage is decent, with 22 city and 28-30 highway. The front seats are roomy for a sports car, but the back seats are a bit cramped for anyone, including my 7-year-old little brother.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that there were a few issues with your car that we were able to fix. We took care of the tar leaking from the door panels, and we were able to replace the driver side door handle. Additionally, we had to fix an input sensor and an output sensor, but we were able to take care of those in just a day. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do for you!

I absolutely loved driving my 2000 Eclipse GT off the lot! The power of the torque pushing me back in the seat, the looks of the car, and even the sound of the exhaust note - it was all amazing! Even now, after a couple of years, I still love driving it and the engine is just as reliable as when I first got it. Of course, there have been some minor wear and tear issues with the rest of the car, but overall it has been the best new car I have ever owned. I really appreciate the storage space in the back, which unfortunately seems to have shrunk away with the newer models. I can easily fit my whole mountain bike in the back without having to disassemble it, which is so convenient! The only thing I would say is that the car could be a bit lighter and tighter on cornering, but that's just a minor issue. All in all, I am so happy with my Eclipse GT!

My 90 Eclipse Base is a 1.8L non-turbo FWD, and while it may not have the horsepower I was expecting, it is an excellent car for fuel efficiency. With 174,000 miles on the clock, the engine is still running smoothly. Although it may not be the fastest car out there, it is still a reliable and efficient mode of transportation. I do need to replace the hatch arms, but that is a minor issue. Overall, I am confident in my choice of car and its capabilities.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased back in 1999 with 105k miles. At first, it was running great and was very fast, which was really exciting! However, over time, I started to notice some issues. Around 110k miles, the engine began to leak a little bit, and by 115k miles, I started to experience some rough idling. Unfortunately, by the time I hit 120k miles, the engine was leaking excessively. Additionally, I found that the brakes on these cars tend to squeak a lot, even if you replace them over and over again. I also had some trouble with the temperature sensor gauge, which made it difficult to start the car at sub 50 degree temperatures. Finally, the turbo stopped functioning properly around 130k miles. Despite these issues, I really enjoyed my time with this car, but I think it's time for me to move on. Thanks for reading!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Eclipse! It looks amazing, like a Ferrari, but without the high price tag and it's also fuel-efficient. While a bigger engine would have been nice for more torque, it's still a lot of fun to drive with the 4 cyl. It's great to hear that this is the best car you've ever owned and that you're happy with the warranty and service agreement. The Eclipse handles really well and is a blast to drive, especially when coming out of corners. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I recently decided to purchase a new car after my 93 Subaru Legacy stopped working. Although I had initially planned on buying a Subaru WRX, I ended up purchasing a 2007 Eclipse due to time constraints. As a young driver at 20 years old, I couldn't resist adding a few personal touches to the car, such as tinted windows and a cold air intake, which has actually made a noticeable difference. I've been driving this car for 3 months now and have not encountered any issues, even with 29,xxx miles on the clock. I highly recommend this car as it's both fun to drive and surprisingly quick for a single overhead cam. With a 1/4 mile time of 14.8 seconds and 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, it's definitely worth considering. Additionally, this car is an import, so it's much more fuel-efficient than American cars. The variable valve timing (MIVEC) is also a great feature that adds to the car's overall performance.

I really like this car! I also happen to own a 2001 Honda Prelude, and while the Eclipse may not be as fast or sleek looking, it's still pretty darn good. The V6 can almost keep up! The interior is really nice, and the body style is kind of muscly, which I personally love. My only complaints would be that the doors are very large and heavy, and they always seem to fall on me when I'm getting in and out. Also, there is absolutely no head room in the backseat, but then again, it is a hatchback.

I bought the car brand new from the dealer. I didn't have any major problems with the car other than regular maintenance. I hit 150K with the original engine before I spun a bearing. Overall, I really liked the way the car handled. For a non-turbo model, you get what you pay for.
