Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

We found out the same car/year has a recall but this was not issued to my specific vehicle. https://www.kbb.com/mitsubishi/eclipse/2004/recall/ I requested Mitsubishi Motors to check the car and give me compensation and they denied. We have a case number with them. The car showed the check engine light but we changed spark plug cables and alternator. It seemed fine otherwise.

  • Model: Mitsubishi Eclipse 2009
  • Report Received Date: 2015-06-02
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Eclipse vehicles manufactured April 20, 2005, to February 13, 2009, and 2007-2009 Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured December 23, 2005, to February 13, 2009. Due to corrosion inside the antil-lock brake system (ABS) unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. • Consequence: A sudden reduction of braking performance may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, flush and clean the ABS hydraulic unit using high grade brake fluid, free of charge. If the inspection shows that the valves may seize, the ABS unit will be replaced. The recall began on July 21, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-15-004.

Latest negative Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Cletus Hill 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 1993

Despite its sleek appearance, this car has been plagued with problems since I purchased it. The automatic transmission has failed multiple times, requiring six rebuilds and eight other transmission failures since its initial purchase. According to a head transmission specialist at a local Mitsubishi dealership, the transmission design of early nineties Eclipses, Talons, and Lasers was insufficient to handle the torque produced by the motor. A transmission specialist at AAMCO Transmissions even went so far as to say that these transmissions are a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. However, it is important to note that these issues do not detract from the car's overall aesthetic appeal and performance when the transmission is functioning properly.

This was the car I bought when I was 16. It's been a pretty good first car, and I'll be sad to part ways with it when I get a new one. I got it with 119,000 miles on the clock, and it now has 152,000.

I purchased this car in 1999 at 105k miles. It ran great and was very fast until around 110k. Around that time the engine began to leak a little bit. I started to experience rough idle around 115k and by time I hit 120k the engine was leaking excessively. The brakes on these cars tend to squeek a lot even if you replace them over and over again. The temperature sensor gauge went auto on the vehicle as well and made is difficult to start at sub 50 degree temperatures. The turbo, also, now around 130k miles does not function properly. I will be dumping this vehicle soon.

Hi there! Over the course of 3 years, I've put 95k miles on this fun car with some seriously hot design qualities. However, I have noticed some rattling noises and have some concerns about the car's overall build quality. I did have to replace a motor mount, but all other components seem to be working just fine. I'm still waiting to see how it holds up over the long haul as the miles continue to rack up.

Despite some electrical issues, this car has proven to be reliable for periods of time. However, when it did break down, the repairs were always expensive. I had all of the work done at a reputable garage in my community, but unfortunately, the car continued to break down. Due to persistent issues with the computer and blown fuses causing the car to stall and lose power while driving, I have decided to part ways with it. Although I will miss it, I am confident that it is the right decision for my safety and well-being.

I've had this GS 2008 for about 3 years now and it's been a great, dependable car. I have no complaints at all and I'm really happy with my little baby, haha.

I haven't seen a better combination of performance, looks, and price than the 09 Eclipse GT. It has more horsepower than the other cars in its class, looks better (in my opinion), and in many cases is less expensive than other cars that offer less.

This car is a fantastic value for its performance and style. I looked at many other options before deciding on the Eclipse GT Spyder, and I can confidently say that it is the most fun car to drive for the money. I'm surprised that this car doesn't get more recognition from professional reviewers. If you're considering buying a car, I highly recommend the Eclipse GT Spyder. You won't regret it!

I bought the car used for 14k. Although I wouldn't pay the price for it new as it's a loaded gt v6, it's a solid choice for the price. It's very quick and puts a grin on my face every time I mash the accelerator! I had a 98 gsx that was totaled by a deer in December and never thought another car could top that one. But I must say, the 06 gt is way nicer.

This car is really fast! I did some mods to it, including a big 16G turbo and a Dragon Z body kit, as well as 660CC injectors. It's even faster now! But even before the mods, it still hauled a lot of yeaaaa. It's always been my dream car, and now I finally own one!
