1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse, produced between 1990 and 2011, is known for its performance capabilities and iconic status in car culture. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

  • Oil and Leaks: Another common problem in the Mitsubishi Eclipse is oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover . If the car has an oil leak, the valve cover may have cracked on the inside, requiring replacement or rebuilding of the transmission . Additionally, a blown head gasket can cause a milky, foamy substance to appear on the oil cap, indicating a coolant leak into the oil .
  • Difficulty Shifting: Some owners of the Mitsubishi Eclipse have reported difficulty shifting gears, particularly in 1990 to 2009 models.
  • Clutch Problems: The clutch assembly in the Mitsubishi Eclipse, particularly in the 1995 to 2008 models, may also cause issues.
  • Sunroof Issues: Some 2002 to 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse models may experience sunroof problems, with the sunroof becoming stuck closed or having difficulty moving.

While the Mitsubishi Eclipse has its share of common problems, it is still a reliable car with excellent performance and fuel economy.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1997-04-01
  • VIN: 4A3AK34Y9TE
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: BOUGHT CAR IN NOV 1996. ABOUT 5 MONTHS OR SO AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR, THE DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR CAN DETACHED FROM THE CEILING. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT A COVERED WARRANTY SERVICE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE THREADS NEEDED TO BE REDONE AND THAT THEY WERE STRIPPED. MY CAR ONLY HAD 16,000 MILES ON IT AT THIS TIME. SO THE DEALER APPARENTLY FIXED IT. BUT THEY DIDN'T. WHEN I PUT MY SUN VISOR DOWN THE VISOR SLIPS OUT OF THE PLASTIC HOLDER AND FLIES FORWARD. SOMETIMES THIS HAS ALMOST COST ME MANY ACCIDENTS. SO I LEAVE THE VISOR FORWARD UNTIL I CAN GRAB IT AND TRY TO PUT IT BACK IN PLACE AND HOPE IT STAYS. THE UNIT IS NOT FULLY SECURE. YOU CAN TELL BY LOOKING AT IT, THAT THE VISOR HOLDER WAS REINSTALLED, POORLY. THE VISOR DOES NOT STAY LOCKED IN PLACE WHEN IN USE OR NOT IN USE.*AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1998-09-10
  • VIN: 4A3AK34Y9TE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: CAR WAS IDLING AT A VERY LOW RPM. I HAD THE CAR SERVICED AND WAS STILL IDLING VERY LOW. WHEN COMING TO A STOP, THE CAR WANTED TO STALL. MEANING THE RPMS DROPPED TO ZERO AND THEN THE IDLE JUMPED EXTREMELY HIGH FOR A FEW SECONDS. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CAR STARTED TO STALL WHEN STOPPING OR GOING AROUND TURNS AT A VERY SLOW SPEED. I TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM HOOK THE CAR UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE. NOTHING REGISTERED ON THE MACHINE. CAR DID NOT STALL FOR THE DEALER, BUT DID STALL FOR ME EVERY TIME AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP OR MECHANICS GARAGE. I THEN PAID MORE ATTENTION TO WHEN THE CAR WOULD STALL. IT WOULD ONLY STALL OR SHUT OFF DURING THE VERY COLD WINTERS AND EVERY TIME IT RAINED.... AFTER TWO DAYS OR SO AFTER A RAIN, THE CAR SEEMED TO DRY OUT AND RUN FINE. I LATER WAS TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BOTTLE NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OUT. I HAD THIS DONE AND THE CAR IMPROVED. I HAVE TO CLEAN THE CARB OUT OF THE CAR AFTER WE HAVE RAINY DAYS. I WAS PAYING ABOUT $60 FOR A MECHANIC TO DO THIS FOR ME. I WOULD ONLY RESORT TO A MECHANIC AFTER I CANT DEAL WITH PRESSING THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME WHEN STOPPING OR TURNING AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED. SO TODAY 7-25-04, I WENT TO THE LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND BOUGH CARB CLEANER AND SPRAYED ABOUT 1/4 OF THE CAN AND CLEANED OUT WHAT I COULD REACH OF THE GUM AND BUILD-UP IN THE CARB. AT FIRST THE CAR DOES NOT WANT TO START BUT THEN AFTER PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL A FEW TIMES, TONS OF WHITE SMOKE POOR OUT OF THE EXHAUST. THEN THE CAR IDEALS MUCH BETTER THAN BEFORE, MEANING I DON'T HAVE TO PRESS BOTH THE BRAKE AND GAS AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS TOLD ABOUT A YEAR AGO, THAT THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY SOMETHING THAT DEALS WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. I DO NOT HAVE $300 + TO FIX THIS, BUT I DO HAVE 1/2 HOUR A COUPLE TIMES A MONTH TO CLEAN THE CARB OUT OF MY CAR. THIS IS THE BIGGEST COMPLAIT BESIDES, MY ROTORS, THAT I HAVE WITH MY CAR. THE CAR IS NOT ENJOYABLE ANYMORE.*AK

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1998-03-20
  • VIN: 4A3AK34Y9TE
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CONSTANT PULSATING OF BRAKES WHEN APPLYING THEM. TOOK CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THE 1ST TIME AND HAD THE ROTORS REPLACED. MITSUBISHI PAID FOR 1/2 OF THE COST AND I PAID THE REST. THIS WAS IN 1998. THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE THE ROTORS REPLACED, THE VIBRATING OF THE BRAKE PEDAL CAME BACK WITHIN 2 WEEKS. SINCE THEN, I HAVE REPLACED AND/OR TURNED DOWN MY ROTORS ON MY FRONT WHEELS OVER 7 TIMES. I DO NOT RIDE MY BRAKES EITHER. I'VE HAD MY ROTORS REPLACED BY NUMEROUS GARAGES. THE ROTORS IMPROVED TWICE DUE TO THE RECALL OF BALL JOINTS. WHEN I HAD MY CAR IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS RECALL AND I DROVE THE CAR HOME, THE BRAKE PEDAL DID NOT PULSATE FOR ABOUT 3 TO 4 WEEKS AFTER THE RECALL WAS MADE GOOD. I HAVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON HAVING THE ROTORS REPLACED. IT'S GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I CANNOT KEEP SPENDING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON ROTORS. I JUST DEAL WITH THE VIBRATING BRAKES AT THIS TIMES. *AK

  • VIN: 4A3AK34Y9TE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MAINTAINED REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND WAS NOTIFIED THAT I HAD AN OIL LEAK IN MY ENGINE. I SAVED ENOUGH MONEY TO HAVE THE HEAD GASKET REPLACED TO FIX THE OIL LEAK. THE HEAD GASKET WAS REPLACED (NEW) IN MARCH OF 2000. 4 MONTHS LATER MY CAR STARTED TO SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST WHEN STANDING STILL IN TRAFFIC. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS DUE TO THE WORK THAT THEY DID. I WAS THEN INFORMED THAT I NEED MY VALUE GUIDES REPLACED. I WAS GOING TO HAVE THIS WORK DONE UNTIL I WAS INFORMED THAT IN ORDER TO REPLACE THE VALUE GUIDES IN THE ENGINE, I MUST PURCHASE ANOTHER NEW HEAD GASKET. I ASKED WHY THIS WAS NOT INSPECTED AT THE TIME THAT THE HEAD GASKET WAS REPLACED. MY ANSWER WAS THAT I DID NOT ASK THEM TO CHECK THE VALUE GUIDES. IF THIS WOULD OF BEEN CORRECTED AT THIS TIME, I WOULD NOT BE SPENDING TONS OF MONEY ON OIL FOR MY VEHICLE. SINCE 2000, I CHECK THE OIL IN MY CAR EVERY OTHER DAY AND ADD OIL TO THE ENGINE. THIS HAS BEEN A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME. I DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER $1000 PLUS TO FIX THIS. I'VE SPOKE WITH OTHER FRIENDS AND PEOPLE WHO OWN THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE AND THEY AS WELL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR LEAKING HEAD GASKET AND VALUE GUIDES, MAKING THE CAR SMOKE.*AK

Although my car has had some issues, I have taken care of them promptly and effectively. Over the last three years, I have replaced the alternator, starter, main computer, ball joints (uppers), tie rod ends, struts (front), crankshaft pulley, head gasket, and main and rod bearings. Despite these repairs, the car has only 79,000 miles on it and is in good condition. I am confident that the car will continue to perform well and I plan to sell it soon.

Although I initially purchased this car in perfect condition, I have unfortunately experienced several issues with it over the past few years. These issues include a malfunctioning sunroof and multiple repairs to the clutch and alternator. Additionally, the air conditioning is currently out and requires a costly repair. Despite these challenges, I have invested over 5500 in the car over the past three years. However, I remain confident in my ability to address these issues and maintain the car's overall performance.

This car was initially fun to drive, but unfortunately, I've had some issues with it since I bought it. I'm not sure how many miles it has done, as the odometer seems to be inaccurate, but I've had to replace the computer, the shocks, and many interior parts have fallen apart. On the other hand, I also own a highly modified 96 Eclipse RS, which has a Japanese JDM 4G63T engine swap with many upgraded options, including a bigger turbo. It's incredibly fast for a 4-cylinder and handles well. However, even with the Japanese engine, it's not as reliable as I would like it to be.

Great driving car! While it may not be the easiest to get in and out of, and the fit and finish may not be the best, it is still an outstanding value. It's often referred to as a 'poor man's Porsche'.

This model is highly sought after, but unfortunately, the engine, transmission, and overall condition of the car were not up to par. Initially, the car ran well, with good fuel economy, smooth shifting, and a pleasing BOV sound from the turbo. However, after a mild winter, the car began to experience issues. Despite my diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, new coolant, and filter replacements, the car's condition continued to deteriorate. I even installed an Apexi N1 exhaust to enhance its sound. The car was primarily driven on highways, but one day the check engine light came on. I suspected it was the oxygen sensor, which I replaced, and the issue was resolved. Unfortunately, the alternator and suspension failed the following day. Despite my best efforts, this car was beyond repair.

I really appreciate this car! I purchased it back in 1997 when it had 36,000 miles on it. Even now, with 192,000 miles on it, it still starts up without any issues, even on the coldest of days. I have only had to perform routine maintenance on it, and it has never required any major repairs. Unfortunately, the Northeastern winters have taken a toll on the body, resulting in extensive rust damage on the undercarriage, including a significant hole in the exhaust. Despite this, it still runs like a charm! As I begin to shop for a newer car, I will miss this old friend dearly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Eclipse that I bought just over a year ago. I absolutely loved it! It had 115K miles on it with 14K on a rebuilt engine and I didn't have any problems with it at all. I was able to bring the miles up to 128k and I could tell that this car had a LOT of life left in it. Unfortunately, a truck plowed into it and totaled it! But, I wanted to share some of the things I loved about it. The seats were super comfortable (although the back seat space is limited, the seats are so cushy!), the trunk was very large, the exterior design was sporty but cute, and it had good gas mileage (close to 400/tank with mostly highway miles). The only downsides were that U-turns were a little difficult, there was a somewhat large blind spot on the side, and the shift knob came very close to the CD deck which was a bit annoying. Overall, I had a great experience with my Eclipse and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable car.

I've had the car for a week and I've been getting nothing but positive responses from people on the street. The car is mildly souped up in and out, and people especially love hearing the turbo's blow off valve go off (aftermarket). I'm 6'2 and it's a bit of a hassle to get in, but once I'm in, I have plenty of legroom. If you're interested, I have some pictures available. Just email me at Cristorey34@hotmail.

I love this car, no problems. All wheel drive and a turbo, that accelerates like nothing. Add an air intake and an exhaust system, and your car is now better than all others.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my GST. I bought it brand new back in '95 and have put 124,000 miles on it with very few issues. I've made some modifications under the hood and undercarriage, and it's still running great! The only major problems I've had were the driver's side door handle breaking and the auto-door lock malfunctioning. Overall, I think it's an amazing car, especially for the price. It handles like a dream and can even take on Mustangs and Camaros with ease!
