1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse, a popular sports car, has been known to have several common problems throughout its production years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse, based on owner complaints:
- Sunroof May Become Stuck Closed or Have Difficulty Moving: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported issues with the sunroof becoming stuck closed or having difficulty moving. This can be caused by a faulty motor or other mechanical issues. If rainwater enters the cabin through a half-open sunroof, it can damage the car's electrical components, leading to additional repair costs. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi has not issued a recall for this issue, so owners will have to shoulder the repair costs themselves.
- Manual Transmission Shifting Difficulty: The manual transmission in the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse can experience issues with shifting, making it difficult to change gears smoothly. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out synchronizers, clutch problems, or issues with the transmission itself. If either the clutch or transmission fails, the entire manual transmission system may be affected, leading to costly repairs.
- Rattle Noise From the Dashboard: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported hearing a rattling noise coming from the dashboard. This can be caused by loose components, such as screws or clips, or by more serious issues, such as a failing heater core. While this issue may not significantly impact the car's performance, it can be a source of annoyance for drivers and passengers.
- Check Engine Light: The check engine light may illuminate on the dashboard of the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse for a variety of reasons, including issues with the engine, transmission, or emissions system. This can be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, a malfunctioning catalytic converter, or other mechanical problems. If the check engine light remains on, it is important to have the car inspected by a professional mechanic to diagnose and address the underlying issue.
- Jerking or Hesitation: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported experiencing jerking or hesitation while driving, particularly during acceleration. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including fuel delivery issues, ignition system problems, or transmission issues. If left unaddressed, these issues can lead to more serious mechanical problems and decreased performance.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners. While these issues can be frustrating and potentially costly to address, regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Before buying this car, it's important to know how to take care of a turbo sports car. This means changing the oil at least every 3000 miles or less to ensure the survival of the turbo and motor. Regular maintenance is also crucial to avoid breakdowns. It's worth noting that the transmission is the weak link in this vehicle. Therefore, it's important to check for any grinding or sounds from the drivetrain, turbo shaft play, and oil leaks before making a purchase. We highly recommend that you only consider buying this car if you have experience maintaining and fixing sports cars.

This car is amazing! I've been in two accidents and it held up like a tank. Even when I got a scratch from a Honda Civic and a van, my car was still safe to drive at high speeds. Plus, it's fast! I can easily reach 90mph at 4500rpms in 4th gear. It's definitely a hot car. And if you're considering a turbo, you won't need it with this car. It hasn't let me down yet, and there's no lag to worry about.
-
You know what's amazing? My car has over 126,000 miles on it and it hasn't broken down or left me stranded anywhere! I feel like I either got really lucky or it's just a really decent car.

You got your car with 253000 miles and had to replace the cv axle and engine mounts, but after fixing these small problems, it has become quite reliable. Although you have had some issues with the mass air flow sensor, it still manages to get you the sixty miles a day you need to go. It's great to hear that you're happy with your purchase and you may even consider buying another one with a bigger engine because you love the look of this car.

The 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a decent vehicle, especially if you have a 2.0 liter engine. However, the 1.8 liter engine, which only produces 92 horsepower, may struggle to climb hills, especially if you have an automatic transmission. On the bright side, the cooling system works well. Although, it's worth noting that the interior plastic trim panels are not very durable and may not stay in place for long.

Your car has been a reliable companion for almost a decade, with a strong engine that has served you well. However, you have experienced some issues with the electronics and the paint job. It's unfortunate that you've had to replace the computers multiple times, and the paint has not held up as well as you would have liked. Despite these challenges, you have taken great care of your car, keeping it in a garage and regularly washing and waxing it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

It's really fun to drive! The car is manual and goes really fast. It's also very compact, which makes it perfect for high school students like me. However, it's not very spacious and can't fit a lot of people. The handling is great though!

Your '93 Eclipse sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that you enjoy it so much. I understand that the spare tire may be a bit small, but overall it seems like a really cool car that you look great in. Thanks for sharing!

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this sports car. While it definitely has its strengths, I did encounter some issues with it. I noticed an unusual oil leak that seemed to be related to the seals, which caused some problems with the engine. Additionally, there were some electrical and mechanical bugs that caused the idiot lights to come on frequently. Despite these issues, I have to say that the car looked great - although it was definitely more impressive in the driveway than on the road. Personally, I preferred my '90 300ZX over both the Eclipse and 3000GT. Thanks for listening!
