1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse, a popular sports car, has been known to have several common problems throughout its production years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse, based on owner complaints:
- Sunroof May Become Stuck Closed or Have Difficulty Moving: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported issues with the sunroof becoming stuck closed or having difficulty moving. This can be caused by a faulty motor or other mechanical issues. If rainwater enters the cabin through a half-open sunroof, it can damage the car's electrical components, leading to additional repair costs. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi has not issued a recall for this issue, so owners will have to shoulder the repair costs themselves.
- Manual Transmission Shifting Difficulty: The manual transmission in the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse can experience issues with shifting, making it difficult to change gears smoothly. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out synchronizers, clutch problems, or issues with the transmission itself. If either the clutch or transmission fails, the entire manual transmission system may be affected, leading to costly repairs.
- Rattle Noise From the Dashboard: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported hearing a rattling noise coming from the dashboard. This can be caused by loose components, such as screws or clips, or by more serious issues, such as a failing heater core. While this issue may not significantly impact the car's performance, it can be a source of annoyance for drivers and passengers.
- Check Engine Light: The check engine light may illuminate on the dashboard of the 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse for a variety of reasons, including issues with the engine, transmission, or emissions system. This can be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, a malfunctioning catalytic converter, or other mechanical problems. If the check engine light remains on, it is important to have the car inspected by a professional mechanic to diagnose and address the underlying issue.
- Jerking or Hesitation: Some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported experiencing jerking or hesitation while driving, particularly during acceleration. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including fuel delivery issues, ignition system problems, or transmission issues. If left unaddressed, these issues can lead to more serious mechanical problems and decreased performance.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners. While these issues can be frustrating and potentially costly to address, regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Your 93 GSX sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you still love it after 4 years. The aftermarket options seem to be endless, and it's fantastic that you've been able to make significant improvements without breaking the bank. It must be a thrill to drive, especially from a stop. It's impressive that your GSX can outperform other cars on the street, including muscle cars. It's clear that you have a lot of knowledge and experience with DSMs, and it's great that you consider 93 and 94 to be the best years. It's also interesting to hear that your GSX is more practical than your previous V8 FBodies, especially with the AWD. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 1993 Mistubishi Eclipse GS. I bought it back in September of 2000 with 138000 miles on it, and I have to say, I'm really impressed with how reliable it's been. At first, I was a bit hesitant about the high mileage, but after doing some research, I found out that these cars were popular among young drivers, which explains the mileage. In the three years that I've owned it, I've only had a couple of minor issues - the slave cylinder of the clutch assembly began leaking, and the bearings in the auto tensioner pulley were bad. But, the best part is that it only cost me $120 in Mitsu parts over a three year period, on an eleven year old car. I'm really happy with how reliable it's been. Thanks for listening!

I pulled my father's Mitsubishi out of a junk yard after it was on fire. After putting some gas and a new battery in it, it ran like a charm and has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Although I don't really use the back seat, I must say that its size is not my favorite feature. However, with some small and cheap performance modifications, it has become really fast!
-
If you're looking for a fun, fast, and reliable car, I would highly recommend this one. As a teen myself, I think this car would be a great fit for anyone in a similar situation. From the moment I first drove it, I was in awe of its performance. I've been driving it for a month now and haven't had any issues. The only downside is that there isn't much room for rear passengers - it almost feels like a two-seater! However, if you're willing to invest in maintenance (which can be a bit pricey), this car will last you as long as you need it to.
-
I bought the car with 80,000 miles from a friend who took really good care of it. The paint looks like new and scheduled maintenance was done every time. The car is exceptional! It's tons of fun and fully loaded.

You got this car back in 2002 with 128,000 miles or so. When you got it, the car had had so much abuse that you wondered if you had made a good choice. Nevertheless, you had some work done on it (the timing belt at 140,000 miles was crucial as you were told it was never changed before) and the car is doing great. A few more things need some work (like the front axle needing replacement) but you still get 30 mpg on the highway and about 25 in town.

The 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a decent vehicle, especially if you have a 2.0 liter engine. However, the 1.8 liter engine, which only produces 92 horsepower, may struggle to climb hills, especially if you have an automatic transmission. On the bright side, the cooling system works well. Although, it's worth noting that the interior plastic trim panels are not very durable and may not stay in place for long.

Your car has been a reliable companion for almost a decade, with a strong engine that has served you well. However, you have experienced some issues with the electronics and the paint job. It's unfortunate that you've had to replace the computers multiple times, and the paint has not held up as well as you would have liked. Despite these challenges, you have taken great care of your car, keeping it in a garage and regularly washing and waxing it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

It's really fun to drive! The car is manual and goes really fast. It's also very compact, which makes it perfect for high school students like me. However, it's not very spacious and can't fit a lot of people. The handling is great though!

Your '93 Eclipse sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that you enjoy it so much. I understand that the spare tire may be a bit small, but overall it seems like a really cool car that you look great in. Thanks for sharing!
