1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Negative 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Montana Maggio 2024-11-12

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. It's been a blast to drive, but unfortunately, it's been having some major issues lately. After hitting 90,000 miles, the turbo suddenly stopped working and it became more of a burden than anything. I've had to replace the clutch, radiator, slave cylinder, and valve cover gasket, which cost me between $300 and $900. With the turbo out, I've decided it's time to let it go. Thanks for listening!

  2. Nicola Mraz 2024-04-18

The truth is, this car is very nice for a young driver. If you're a parent and worried about your kids driving fast, it might not be the best choice. Other than that, it's a great car!

  3. Ari Boyer 2024-04-14

Despite its sleek appearance, this car has been plagued with problems since I purchased it. The automatic transmission has failed multiple times, requiring six rebuilds and eight other transmission failures since its initial purchase. According to a head transmission specialist at a local Mitsubishi dealership, the transmission design of early nineties Eclipses, Talons, and Lasers was insufficient to handle the torque produced by the motor. A transmission specialist at AAMCO Transmissions even went so far as to say that these transmissions are a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. However, it is important to note that these issues do not detract from the car's overall aesthetic appeal and performance when the transmission is functioning properly.

  4. Sven Schmeler 2024-02-11

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 1992 GS Eclipse. Although I've had a few issues with it, like having to replace the clutch and dealing with problems like the Cam Shaft Sensor and syncro's in my 3rd gear, I still find it fun to drive, especially when going really fast. However, I do admit that the constant problems can be a bit of a hassle. Overall, it's been an interesting journey with my Eclipse!

Positive 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Samson Jones 2024-11-23

I've been driving my GS-Turbo since 1996 and she's still going strong with around 170k miles on the clock. Many people underestimate the power and acceleration of the turbo in the GST, but I'll never forget the first time I really 'stepped on it'. The front popped up and the rear dropped, and before I knew it, I was doing 60mph in about 6 seconds (in 3rd gear) going up a hill. I even had blue lights flashing behind me trying to catch up (lesson learned - always check the rearview mirror before take-off). All in all, if you're looking for stock speed (not necessarily torque) from a stock engine/turbo, you've got it here.

  2. Alvis Mraz 2024-10-08

This car is amazing! I've been in two accidents and it held up like a tank. Even when I got a scratch from a Honda Civic and a van, my car was still safe to drive at high speeds. Plus, it's fast! I can easily reach 90mph at 4500rpms in 4th gear. It's definitely a hot car. And if you're considering a turbo, you won't need it with this car. It hasn't let me down yet, and there's no lag to worry about.

  3. Ariel Koss 2024-09-05

I bought the car with 80,000 miles from a friend who took really good care of it. The paint looks like new and scheduled maintenance was done every time. The car is exceptional! It's tons of fun and fully loaded.

  4. Taylor Russel 2024-08-11

This car is fantastic! It has great looks, is faster than suped up Honda's, and has a nice sounding turbo to show off to the competition. I can't believe I found this car in perfect condition - I've had it for a year and still no problems, except for the engine mounts which were a breeze to fix. It was loaded with sounds and I got it for only 2,500. It's really a one-of-a-kind great car!

  5. Stuart Considine 2024-07-16

Before buying this car, it's important to know how to take care of a turbo sports car. This means changing the oil at least every 3000 miles or less to ensure the survival of the turbo and motor. Regular maintenance is also crucial to avoid breakdowns. It's worth noting that the transmission is the weak link in this vehicle. Therefore, it's important to check for any grinding or sounds from the drivetrain, turbo shaft play, and oil leaks before making a purchase. We highly recommend that you only consider buying this car if you have experience maintaining and fixing sports cars.
