2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

- Summary: DASHBOARD CRACKS IN MULTIPLES OF AREA'S, WHICH DOES EFFECT THE POSITION OF THE AIRBAG. THE PLASTIC IS VERY BRITTLE TO THE POINT WHEN IT CRACKS IT'S AS SHARP AS A RAZOR. I REVIEWED SEVERAL WEB SITE AND NOTED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL TYPE OF MITSUBISHI'S. I HAVE A 2003 ECLIPSE THAT HAS A CRACKED DASHBOARD SO BAD THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE DASH BOARD IS SLOPING DOWNWARD, THE CRACKING STARTED 8 YEARS AGO AND CONTINUES TO CRACK MORE AND MORE EVERYDAY, CAUSING STRUCTURE SUPPORT ISSUES AND RAZOR SHARP EDGES. I HAVE CUT MYSELF SEVERAL TIMES ON THE SHARP EDGES. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A ISSUE WITH THE TYPE OF PLASTIC THAT WAS USED TO CONSTRUCTED THESE DASHBOARDS ... I WOULD RATE THIS AS A NEED TO REVIEW ASAP ISSUE... IF MY AIR BAG EVER WENT OFF, SHARP PIECES OF PLASTIC WOULD PROBABLY BE FLYING EVERYWHERE LIKE A KNIFE...

WHEN THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, THE VISOR ON THE VEHICLE DETACHED. THE VEHICLE'S TOP WAS DOWN AT THE TIME AND CAUSED THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG TO BLOW IN THE WIND, WHICH HINDERED THE CONTACT'S VIEW OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER BUT, DUE TO THE DISTRACTION OF THE AIR BAG BLOWING, THE CONTACT STRUCK A CULVERT, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STOP AND THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG TO DEPLOY. WHEN THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, IT RELEASED A SMALL SPARK AND THERE WAS A BURNING ODOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A AAA TRANSMISSION APPROVED SHOP WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED SEVERAL REPAIRS. - Components: TIRES
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE SPYDER EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR ASSURANCE TRIPLETRED TIRES, SIZE P215/55R16. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT AND CAUSED THE CONTACT TO DRIVE OVER A CURB. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE TIRE AND FOUND THAT THE TIRE TREAD WAS SEPARATED. TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-11-28
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4A3AE45G73E
- Components: TIRES,WHEELS
- Summary: ON NOVEMBER 28, 2015 MY PASSENGER FRONT TIRE EXPLOSIVELY FAILED COMING OUT OF A LEFT TURN AT ABOUT 25 MPH CAUSING MY CAR TO DROP AND SWERVE, CRASHING INTO A TALL STREET CURB AND STORM SEWER DRAIN CAUSING $2000 DAMAGE TO MY CAR. THE OUTER SIDEWALL SEPARATED CIRCUMFERENTIALLY FROM THE TREAD. THIS PREMIUM TIRE WAS ONLY SEVEN MONTHS OLD WITH MINIMAL WEAR. I CHECK MY TIRE PRESSURE AND FLUIDS EVERY TIME I BUY GAS, OVERHAULED THE SUSPENSION THAT SUMMER AND DIDN'T BELIEVE IT WAS MY FAULT. I TOOK THE TIRE STILL ON THE DAMAGED WHEEL TO A TIRE FAILURE EXPERT WHO RULED OUT PRE-EXISTING DAMAGE, UNUSUAL WEAR OR SIGNS OF DRIVING WITH LOW OR HIGH TIRE PRESSURE; HE STATED THERE WAS A ZIPPER FAILURE RESULTING FROM A BAD TIRE. THIS WAS THE SECOND GOODYEAR ASSURANCE TRIPLETRED TO FAIL ON MY CAR. I CONTACTED GOODYEAR AND FILED A CLAIM WITH THEIR PROPERTY CLAIMS TEAM. I HAD REPLACED THE WHEEL AND TIRE AND GOT TWO CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES. THEY REQUIRED THE TIRE TO BE TAKEN OFF THE WHEEL AND SHIPPED TO THEM FOR INSPECTION. WITHOUT EXPLANATION, IT SAT DELAYED AT THE GOODYEAR TIRE AND SERVICE CENTER FOR WEEKS. THE CLAIM, #492513, WAS QUICKLY DENIED; I RECEIVED A LETTER WHICH I FOLLOWED UP WITH A PHONE CALL TO CLARIFY. GOODRICH CLAIM'S TEAM STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHY THE TIRE BLEW OUT SO THEY REFUSED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF IT BEING MY FAULT BUT THEY ALSO DIDN'T FIND AN OBVIOUS DEFECT THAT WOULD CAUSE THE BLOWOUT SO THEY CONVENIENTLY DENIED TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR TIRE OR THE DAMAGE FROM THE CRASH THAT RESULTED FROM IT'S FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER OF A CRITICAL COMPONENT LIKE A TIRE CAN'T JUST REFUSE TO BE RESPONSIBLE WHEN IT FAILS AND THEY DON'T TO KNOW WHY. I WAS A LIFETIME LOYAL GOODYEAR CUSTOMER UNTIL THIS. I HAVE THE TIRE AND WHEEL AND PHOTOS AND WON'T GIVE UP UNTIL THEY PAY FOR THE DAMAGES.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-06
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4A3AC84H43E
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE MAIN ISSUE SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE WAVE/CUSHION SPRING LOCATED IN THE TRANSMISSION. MITSUBISHI HAS DESIGNED THE WAVE SPRING AS A FRAGILE TWO COIL PIECE WHICH HAS BEEN KNOWN TO REPEATEDLY BREAK CAUSING CATASTROPHIC FAILURE IN THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IN TURN POSES A THREAT ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. WHEN THIS WAVE SPRING BREAKS, ACTUAL PIECES OF THE WAVE SPRING MAKE IT THROUGH MITSUBISHI'S ALSO FAULTY TRANSMISSION FILTER AND LODGE THEMSELVES IN THE PUMP GEAR, CAUSING THE GEAR TO ACTUALLY BREAK. AFTER THE PUMP GEAR HAS BEEN BROKEN INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION, ALL FORWARD AND REVERSE GEARS IMMEDIATELY STOP FUNCTION AND IN MOST INSTANCES THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. THIS COULD RESULT IN POTENTIAL HARM OR EVEN DEATH OF THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER AS THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL MOVING POWER WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. MITSUBISHI HAS RECENTLY CREATED AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE WAVE SPRING WITHOUT ISSUING A RECALL, WHICH NOW IS A ONE PIECE INSTEAD OF THE COIL SETUP AND HAS A LESS CHANCE OF BREAKING. TO MANY MITSUBISHI/DODGE OWNERS THIS UPDATE WAS DISCOVERED AFTER THEY HAVE HAD THEIR VEHICLE IN A TRANSMISSION SHOP WITH A HEFTY BILL TO PAY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MITSUBISHI'S FAULT FOR ENGINEERING A FAULTY PART IN THEIR TRANSMISSION. ALL ONE PERSON WOULD NEED TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS ISSUE IS SEARCH THE INTERNET WITH THE TRANSMISSION CODE (F4A51) AND THIS ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED, EVEN RESEARCHED BY TRANSMISSION DIGEST (A SPECIALTY MAGAZINE). NOT ONLY IS THIS A LARGE INCONVENIENCE TO MOST, IT IS ALSO A HAZARD TO ONES LIFE. MITSUBISHI SHOULD RECALL ALL VEHICLES WHICH CONTAIN THE F4A51 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO PERFORM THE WAVE SPRING AND FILTER UPDATE OR REIMBURSE THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD IT DONE AT THEIR COST. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS IF YOU OWN A VEHICLE WITH THE F4A51

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-08-26
- VIN: 4A3AC74H33E
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL FROM MITSUBISHI ON THE PASSENGER SUN VISOR REQUIRING A TETHER STRAP. I CALLED THEIR TOLL FREE NUMBER TO LOCATE A DEALER TO INSTALL THE TETHER STRAP AS DIRECTED BY THE NOTICE. MITSUBISHI DOES NOT HAVE A DEALER IN TUCSON AND INFORMED ME WE NEEDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A PHOENIX DEALER, OVER A 100 MILES AWAY FOR THE REPAIR. THE COST OF GAS AND THE TRAVEL TIME (OFF WORK OR MISSING SCHOOL) IS HIGHER THAN THE PARTS AND LABOR FOR .5 OF AN HOUR LABOR. THEY HAVE NOT MADE ARRANGEMENTS WITH A LOCAL TUCSON CAR REPAIR FACILITY TO PERFORM THIS RECALL, NOR DID THEY OFFER TO SEND ME THE PARTS FOR SELF INSTALLATION. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY POOR RESPONSE TO A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE. CAN YOU ASSIST AS I KNOW THERE ARE MORE OF THE SAME VEHICLE IN TUCSON.

I WENT TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED MY ECLIPSE AND WAS TOLD THAT MITSUBISHI WAS HAVING A PAINT ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL. I AM HOPING THAT MITSUBISHI WILL STAND BEHIND THEIR NAME AND MAKE THIS RIGHT. I ALSO PURCHASED A 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO IN 2002 AND THAT PAINT JOB LOOKS LIKE THE DAY I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT. I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT 2 OF THEM. *TR

- VIN: 4A3AC44G73E
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THIS VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED STALLING WHETHER IDLING, ACCELORATING, OR COASTING. IT WOULD THEN HAVE TROUBLE STARTING AND RUN FINE AGAIN. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE MITSUBSHI DEALERSHIP ON WESTERN BLVD IN JACKSONVILLE, NC, THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE IT BUT FOUND IN THEIR DATA BASE THAT THERE IS A TINY PART IN THE CRANK SHAFT THAT COULD CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. AFTER WAITING A WEEK FOR PARTS THEY REALIZED THEY HAD THE WRONG TOOL. ANOTHER WEEK WAITING FOR THE TOOL AND THE NEW PART DDID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER WEEK OF KEEPING MY CAR THEY REPLACED THE FUEL INJECTION REGULATOR WITH A USED PART, THIS DID NOT FIX IT. ANOTHER WEEK WITH A NEW FUEL INJECTOR. NOW IT DOES NOT STALL BUT I CANT GET GAS IN THE GAS TANK, THE CAR SMELLS LIKE GAS, THERE IS STILL OCCASIONAL STALLING, AND THE NEW TIMING BELT THEY PUT ON SCREECHES WITH THE FIRST START OF THE DAY EVERYDAY. THE GAS TANK PROBLEM IS FOUND TO BE THAT THE VALVE IS STUCK IN THE FULL AND CLOSED POSITION AND WHOLE NEW GAS TANKIS RECOMMENDED. ANOTHER TWO WEEKS AND STILL WAITING ON THE GAS TANK. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE AUGUST 22ND AND IT IS NOW OCTOBER FIRST AND MY CAR IS STILL UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND WAITING FOR PARTS. HOW IS IT THAT MITSUBISHI CAN ALLOW THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO TAKE THIS LONG, COST THIS MUCH, AND TO RETURN A VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER IN WORSE SHAPE THAN IT WAS GIVEN? I PAID FOR ALL OF THESE NEW PARTS AND LABOR, AND STILL HAVE A VEHICLE THAT I CANT USE. ALSO, AS A SIDE NOTE, IT IS BLACK WHICH MEANS THE CHEAP FACTORY CLEAR COAT IS COMING OFF, THE AC LEAKS ON THE DRIVERSIDE FLOOR, THE TRUNK DOES NOT OPEN WHEN YOU PULL THE LEVER...THESE ARE ALL THINGS THAT SHOULD NOT BE EXPIRED ON AN 03 VEHICLE AND ARE SO COMMON WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I just got my car, so I haven't had a chance to fully experience it yet. It's a beautiful car and surprisingly fast - I didn't realize how fast until I took it out of the showroom! The driver and passenger seats are very roomy, but the back seats are quite small with limited leg room. Despite that, I still absolutely love the car!

I was trying to decide between this car and the Acura RSX (not the Type S). But I ultimately chose this car because, for the same price, I felt I got a little more style, 40 additional horses, a wider selection in color, and a reliable car that I can trust just as much as the Acura.

I used to own a Z28 Camaro. I thought there would never be another car that I could fall in love with again, but I was wrong. I bought the 2003 Eclipse 2 weeks ago and I love everything about it. The interior is a great midnight shade. I love how the blue fades with the black. I just wanted everybody to know how wonderful the car is!

This new form of eclipse is rather impressive. The 6 cyl. engine has some pep and if you don't mind sweating when it's hot outside, it's very fun to drive. Although there is a severe blind spot, the gas mileage is good for a sports car and insurance is relatively low. It's not considered a sports car, but it still looks good with the same Mitsubishi low rent interior condiments. Aftermarket parts are hard to find right now, but they will likely become available soon. Overall, this is a very nice car.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying driving this car! It really does have a great look and ride. It's definitely a cool car.

Shortly after purchasing my vehicle, I began experiencing issues with 5th gear, my window, brakes, and a/c. I took my car back to the dealer, where they repaired 5th gear, my window, and attempted to eliminate the unpleasant smell from the a/c. After receiving my car back, I noticed that 2nd gear was grinding and my cigarette lighter was defective. I returned the car to the dealer to have them work on the transmission, clean the a/c, and replace the cigarette lighter. The dealer repaired the a/c and lighter, but was unable to confirm the issue with 2nd gear. I have since returned twice and am currently seeking legal advice.

It's actually a pretty good deal for a $20,000 car, but I've always had trouble with its performance. As another magazine review put it, 'It looks a lot sportier than it drives.' Everything else is fine, except for the noise. It gets really loud on the highway, making it hard to hear my radio.

The Eclipse looks great inside and out! While I find it to be a bit loud and lacking in space in the back seat, I still think it's a very nice sports car. I love the looks I receive when driving it and it's cool to see others driving one too. I do wish there were more color options though. I purchased the silver one and it seems like everyone else has the same color. Overall, I'm hoping the car will hold up well, even compared to Honda or Toyota.
