1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR INSTANTLY LOSS USE OF CONTROL IN STEERING AND THE CAR PROCEEDED TO LEAVE THE ROAD ONTO A GRASSY MEDIAN TO MY LEFT SIDE. I DISCOVERED THE FRONT CONTROL ARM WAS LYING ON THE ROADWAY DETACHED FROM THE AXEL AND TIRE. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL WAS WEDGED AT AN ANGLE BETWEEN THE FRAME AND THE DISASSEMBLED PARTS OF THE CAR. I HAD THE 1999 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE TOWED HOME AND REPLACED THE FAULTY PARTS WITH ANOTHER FRONT CONTROL ARM & LOWER BALL JOINT PURCHASED FROM AUTO ZONE. IN 2011, THE SAME VEHICLE A 1999 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE RS HATCHBACK LOSES CONTROL WHILE IN MOTION AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES PER HOUR, AS I WAS TURNING LEFT ONTO A TWO LANE STREET. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-08-01
  • VIN: 4A3AX35G7XE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION STICKING BETWEEN 40-60 MILES PER HOUR AT 3000 RPMS AND HAS A PROBLEM SHIFTING DOWN CAUSING THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT TO COME ON. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS ON THE SAME 2 ROADS IN THE SAME EXACT SPOT. I HAD THE PULSE GENERATORS IN THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AND ONE WEEK LATER IT WAS DOING IT AGAIN. I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE IF IT IS AIR INTAKE RELATED SINCE IT HAPPENS ONLY AT THOSE 2 SPOTS ON THE ROAD. TRANSMISSION WAS DIAGNOSED OK (ON COMPUTER UNHOOKED TO THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE CAR) I AM TAKING IT BACK IN TODAY TO HAVE THE CODE READ AGAIN, HOWEVER IT RESETS ITSELF IF IT DOES NOT STICK FOR WHILE WHEN DRIVING. PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT STARTING AROUND AUGUST OF 2008 AND THE PROBLEM HAD BECOME MORE PERSISTENT UNTIL LAST WEEK 3/25/09 WHEN I HAD THE PULSE GENERATOR REPLACED. IT DID THE SAME THING 4/1/09 ONE WEEK LATER IN THE SAME 2 SPOTS ON THE ROAD. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS ELECTRICAL AND AIR TAKE RELATED BUT THE CODES GIVEN AT THE TIME IT IS DIAGNOSED IS NOT SPECIFIC ENOUGH. I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK WITH A MITSUBISHI REP THAT CAN HELP DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE WITH OUT HAVING TO KEEP PAYING FOR IT SINCE I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME ISSUE. I WANT MY CAR FIXED BEFORE MORE DAMAGE IS DONE. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT HE DID NOT NEED AN ALIGNMENT WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE BALL JOINTS. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND ANOTHER MITSUBISHI DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED A FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT FOLLOWING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE BALL JOINTS. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-20
  • VIN: 4A3AK34Y3XE
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASED CAR IN 2003 AND WITHIN 6 MONTHS CERTAIN AREAS ON THE CAR THE PAINT BEGAN TO DIMINISH. TAKEN TO MITSUBISHI FOR EFFECTED AREAS AND THEY PAINTED CAR ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, (THE EFFECTED AREAS AT THAT TIME) BUT WHEN THE REST OF THE CAR CONTINUED TO DIMINISH MITSUBISHI REFUSED TO PAINT AFFECTED AREAS BECAUSE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL MITSUBISHI'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, AND I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY MITSUBISHI DOESN'T PAINT THE ENTIRE CAR AT THE FIRST SIGN OF THIS PROBLEM. THE ENTIRE CAR IS PAINTED WITH THIS CLEAR COAT, SO THE ENTIRE CAR WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, MITSUBISHI DOESN'T PAINT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE ALL AT ONCE SO THAT THEIR CUSTOMERS WILL ONLY GO TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENS, AND WILL JUST PAY OUT OF THEIR POCKETS WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN! THIS SAVES THE GREEDY COMPANY MONEY! *TR

THEY SAID IT WAS BECAUSE OF BUILD UP IN THE EXHAUST, AND THEY CLEANED IT OUT, AND NOT EVEN 5 MILES DOWN THE ROAD IT STALLED AGAIN. REPLACED BELTS,GASKETS,SPARK PLUGS AND HOSES. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. WELL IF THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT I WOULDN'T BE SCARED TO DRIVE IT WITHOUT GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT. *AK

AFTER THE WARRANTY WAS UP THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HANDLE COMPLETELY BROKE OFF AND NOW THE DRIVER SIDE HANDLE DOES NOT "CATCH" SO I CANNOT OPEN EITHER DOOR--I HAD TO CLIMB IN THROUGH THE HATCHBACK!! IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE DOOR HANDLES. ALSO, THE TRUNK/HATCH LOCK IS WEIRD, I HAVE TO TURN THE KEY TWICE EVERY TIME TO OPEN THE TRUNK--THE FIRST TIME THE TRUNK OPENS SLIGHTLY BUT REMAINS LOCKED...*NM

Negative 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

I've owned my Eclipse for four years now, and while it's been a fun ride, I'm excited to move on. Although, I must admit, it's been in the repair shop quite a bit. I've had to replace both sets of belts twice, and one of them is due for replacement again. Additionally, both door handles have fallen off in the past year and a half. I would only recommend this car to someone who is prepared to invest at least $1000 per year in repairs after the warranty expires.

  2. Walker Hegmann 2024-01-07

Make sure to ask about the disposition fee they charge you to turn in your vehicle, as it can be quite expensive. Additionally, maintenance costs can be high, and some local auto shops may not work on Mitsubishis due to difficulties obtaining parts. Unfortunately, many parts tend to break or need replacement just as the warranty expires. Overall, Mitsubishi may not be the most reliable company and the car may not be worth the investment. In fact, it could cost you well over $1000 just to turn in your car!

I purchased this used car back in 2001 when it had only 20k miles on it. I drove it for almost 8 years without any major issues. There were a few minor problems, such as the remote locker on the left door not working well, sometimes failing to unlock or lock. I did have one accident due to the wet road during a rainstorm, which caused damage to the left tire and front bumper after slipping into the shoulder of the road. However, it was fixed and has been running well ever since. Currently, it has 74k miles on it and is still running smoothly. I would love to keep it until it reaches 200k miles, but unfortunately, I have to give it up because my wife cannot drive a manual transmission.

Congratulations on your first car! It's great to hear that it has been reliable for you, with only minor issues like the door sealant in the summer. Your upgrades to the CAI and front and rear strut bars, as well as the 16 inch wheels with 225P55R16 Yokohama ES100 summer tires, have really improved the handling. While it may not be the fastest off the starting block, it certainly looks and sounds fast! The interior is sporty and the trunk space is impressive, especially when the rear seats are folded down. It's exciting to hear that the sleek curvy look is making a comeback for the 05 model. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

It sounds like you found a real gem! This car is not only beautiful, but also a ton of fun to drive. It's great to hear that you haven't experienced any problems or flaws in its performance after 3 months. Based on your recommendation, I might have to check it out myself!

  4. Terrill Cummings 2024-10-07

Great fun to drive! It's surprisingly fast even with a 4 cylinder engine. I strongly recommend it.

  5. Theodore Kertzmann 2024-10-06

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I've had a pretty good experience with my car overall. The only thing that's been a bit of a hassle is the engine alarm. It's just a little plastic thing and I don't like relying on it to use my car. Plus, there's only one key for my car because of the alarm, so when I misplace my keys (which happens more often than I'd like to admit), I can't go anywhere. But overall, I'm pretty happy with my car!
